glo is not thinking of EDGE

after a month of flirting with MTN 3.5G, i am back to my Starcomms.
Reasons:
1) MTN 3.5G speed no better than Starcomms EvDO.
2) Starcomms gives a robust connection.
3)and ofcourse as you all know, no download limit!
4) customer service: very good. in my own experience o!
more reasons later.

@samir101ng. You don't need to take any other step other than to step into a starcomms shop and get yourself an izap package. within the evdo coverage you get that kind of speed. Period.

i am not surprised that mtnonline.com is inaccessible using mtn3G because some folks in the phone section has been claiming they browse free from that site.

i checked tariffs and packages on zain's website. so many confusing plans with no distinguishing features. why can't  zain  just reduce intra call and intra sms tariffs for all its subscribers rather than launching another package. they would attract more customers that way. who are the dull brain in the marketing department?

Internet Explorer 7 only allows you to download two files from the same server at a time.  This is not a software limit but rather a limit imposed based on the web standard. Since this is simply a software setting, it can be modified and you can increase the limit to something much high such as 10.  Follow the steps below to increase your max downloads from the same server:

   1. Click on the Start Button and type in Regedit.
   2. When Registry Editor loads navigate through HKEY_CURRENT_USER, Software, Microsoft, Windows, CurrentVersion and Internet Settings.
   3. Right click on MaxConnectionsPerServer and select Modify. Set the decimal value to something greater than 2.
   4. Right click on MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server and select Modify. Set the decimal value to something greater than 2.
   5. Reboot.

When you type in a domain name such as nairaland.com in your browser the computer must resolve the friendly name into an IP address of the server to download the web page and supporting files. Windows uses a DNS (domain name system) server to lookup this information.  By default, Windows uses your ISP’s DNS server.  Depending on your provider, the performance of their DNS resolving server varies.  Some large national providers are known to provide unreliable and slow DNS servers. 

The performance of the DNS server you are using is one component that affects the speed of your internet browsing.  Since each domain name you type in must be resolved into an IP address, the amount of time that takes will delay the loading of any web page.  Some users with overloaded ISP DNS servers can see delays in multiple seconds before web pages start to load.

OpenDNS provides free alternative DNS servers that anyone can use with any internet provider.  Unlike many national internet providers, OpenDNS’s DNS servers are very fast and reliable.   Using OpenDNS servers instead of your ISP servers will help you speed up your internet browsing by cutting down on the delay between resolving a domain name and getting the IP address so your browser can start loading the web page.

Configuring your computer to use OpenDNS servers instead of your ISP’s is a simple change that works in both Windows XP and Windows Vista:

   1. Click on the Start Button and type in ncpa.cpl and hit Enter.  In Windows XP Click on the Start Button, click Run and then type in ncpa.cpl
   2. Right click on your active network connection that you use to connect to the Internet and select Properties.
   3. On the Networking / General tab, select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) (version 4 on Windows Vista) and hit Properties.
   4. On the properties screen, select Use the following DNS server addresses and then type in 208.67.222.222 in the preferred and 208.67.220.220 in the alternate boxes.

       
   5. Hit OK twice and you are finished.

If you wish to install Windows XP on a computer that comes with Windows Vista already installed then you will have to create a separate partition on your hard drive to install Windows XP onto. This effectively splits the hard drive into two, and keeps the different versions of Windows separate. To do this you need to open up the Computer Management screen by going to the Start menu and then right-clicking on Computer and selecting Manage.

From the Computer Management screen select Disk Management, right-click on your main hard disk where Windows Vista is installed and then select Shrink Volume. This opens up a window where you can choose how large you want the new drive partition for Windows XP to be. You need to select the size of the new partition carefully, as you will need enough space to be able to install Windows XP successfully (around 10 gigabytes) whilst leaving enough space for Windows Vista. After you have selected the appropriate amount of space click on the Shrink button to begin the process, and once that has completed you should be able to right-click on the new partition (which should be labelled “Unallocated free space”) and select New Simple Volume. Follow the on-screen instructions to configure the partition, set a drive letter (such as E:\), give it a meaningful name such as “XP”, and then restart your computer. Whilst your computer reboots, access the BIOS and change to boot sequence to boot from your CD/DVD Drive before any other device, insert your Windows XP installation disc and then save and exit from BIOS. You will then be taken to the Windows XP installation program where you should follow the instructions until you come to the screen asking you which partition to install Windows XP to. Make sure you select the new partition and not the one with Windows Vista installed, as this will cause problems. Once Windows XP has finished installing, you will notice that Windows XP loads up automatically, rather than giving you the choice of which operating system to use. To rectify this insert your Windows Vista installation disc and restart the computer to access the Windows Vista installation program. From the Install Now screen select Repair My Computer, and then select your Windows Vista installation and then Startup Repair. You will now be able to choose which operating system to use when your computer starts up.

etisalat is not coming out with 3G right away. It will take some time. The best i expect from them now is EDGE. 3G no be garri, ask zain and alheri.

@poster. Acer is the no. 3 pc vendor globally and no. 2 laptop maker  in terms of volume and sales worldwide infact they are no. 1 in Europe and Asia. Point is they make good  and afford PCs. The  above spec has generous memory(RAM and  HDD) and is a multimedia notebook from their Aspire range. If you can afford it, go for it. Personally I use Acer Travelmate 5720 , it's a rugged notebook suitable for a "road warrior" like me. Very good performance .

it really amuses me when people who have no computer or IT training of any sort come here to say they have done "research", on how to use the internet from their gsm line without being billed, I just laugh. So many useless posts and claims in the phone section. They don't even understand what proxy softwares are used for.
