Eggcelent:doesn't the io supposed to be administered the very day she brought them in? That is how I do mine ooo, you put it in their eyes. The glucose it so help the birds cope with the stress of moving them from OBJ farm to your farm. |
jamp:That is good |
jamp:For some reason the pictures that I took was not uploading to my computer, but here is the link that will show you the Pics of the tips. http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Free-shiping-10-pcs-lot-Auto-Water-Nipples-Drinker-Poultry-Chicken-Duck-Bird-Feeder-Hanging-Screw/573276007.html |
Globaby01:Abeg, which question be that ooo, mplease resend. |
Globaby01:Pele ooo, I thought I responded to you |
LaBibiano:Any time, Good luck |
obnelly:Soooo, true guys, there are bunch of things that can make your birds die, it is about reducing the rate, I just lost over 20 from my day old few days ago from heat stress, my concussion couldn't save them, So start small and try everything you can think of, and you will come up with something. |
Trueigbo:I will try and get to it tomorrow |
obnelly:Abi ooo! On Channels 10:00pm news on Friday, they interviewed the Chairman of Poultry Association Of Nigeria about the bird flu, I was wondering if he is one of us here on this thread, or is everyone here mom and pop farmer like me. |
jamp:Yap. later this morning, I am going to be in the farm working to get the drinkers set up, I hope the ones you bought is the ones that the tip can move in all direction, the ones that only goes up and down gets spoiled easily and the birds will have to push it in for water to come out. the best ones moves 360 degree, so it is easy for the birds to drink from it. |
https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=758451504234438&fref=nf I saw this video on FB and think to share it here, I normally just read and never comment on issues like this, but I just feel like sending a sound of warning to who might hear it, the video is disturbing, and my concern is about those who will fall victim of issues they know nothing about. Violence should never be employed to show ones discontentment with the system, the truth now is that it is poor innocent people that will be killed and their properties destroyed. GEJ and GMB's children will not be on the streets of Nigeria, that is if any of them will be in the country that month, people that has no say or has never benefited from both men, will suffer it if this happens the days following Feb 14th, if GEJ wins. While I am not supporting any of them personally, I will advice any life loving southerners especially the Igbos to go to their states temporary, because they will be the ultimate victim should this happen. And with the look of things, it is going to happen, the polity is super charged now and no one can stop it. |
obnelly:True ooo, I am sure you can put something together, are you able to get the materials that you will need locally? There is a farm I visited sometime ago, they have a pit that they flush the poo into and some farmers or fish farmer come to pack them, So thinking about it, using a power hose to flush the poo on a daily bases. But then, the smell is a function of wetness that creates the chemical reaction, So, the deal is to keep the poo dry. I have not really invested time to check things out though, because I am not doing layers at the moment, and in my broilers pen, I am installing DIY water drinker (using the nipples) I will hang them up by tomorrow, that will cut the wetness by almost 80%, because the attendants while changing the water, spill a lot on the floor, and the birds step into it, and even knock over the water holder every now and then. So, with this system, we don't have to worry again about wetness as a result of water, only through their poo which can be managed. Also, there is a DIY I saw on using a 4" PVC pipe to construct their feeder, in such a way that they won't spill the feed on the floor. There will be a small mechanism that will help push the feed through the pipe so that the attendants are not going through the pen filling one feeder at a time, also this will curtail feed wastage. With all this in place the work will be less tedious for my staffs, it will also curtail mortality as their will always be fresh water running in the water drinker. As I think about entering the layers market before this year runs out, I will start doing some investigation, though I have the largest space in the area where my farm is, at the same time I don't want to a nuisance to them, I want to be corporate responsible. LOL!!! |
dreuche:Try to keep the liter from getting so wet, that means changing the liter regularly, it is not going to be easy, but that is about what you have to do. Good luck |
kengeorge:Sorry my brother, I came back Saturday evening, just saw this message now, too late. |
AkayTopsy:I go back and forth, I stay for at least 2 months each time I am there. |
AkayTopsy:Where are you flying from, I will back in the country ny this weekend. |
endy247:I didn't buy the whole drinker, what I bought was the nipple, on Amazon you can get it for say, 15 pieces for $5 or $7.95. The idea is that I will finish it up buy my self at my farm. It will save me and my workers a lot of wahala, they won't have to individually manually change the water and the liters will stay dry for a long time. All those Nigeria online stores might have them ooo, check. |
samuel25:Is the eggs for hatching? I want to play with trying to hatch a few eggs and see how it works, for a little over $100 there is an incubator that have the capacity to hatch 48 eggs. I have not looked into parent stock and have no idea how to raise them, Is that what you are doing? I bought 200 layers and 200 cockerel, they are just between 3 and 4 weeks now, but they will be growing together. |
endy247:It is true that there are some products or systems out there that can help prevent or reduce the odor, another thing that can really help is making sure that the pen doesn't get wet, and or you need to remove the liter regularly. One of the ways to reduce wetness, is how you water them, i.e: their drinking water. I don't know if you can get and connect the poultry nipple drinker system. I am not using it yet, but I have bought a whole bunch on Amazon and will be fixing it myself when I get back. it is something you can do yourself (DIY) you can see bunch of videos on Youtube. With this, you control the wetness, and your birds will always have water to drink. I have noticed that by pen doesn't smell with it is not wet, and even when we pack the liters and bagged them, as long as they are not wet, you can walk by without noticing it. Now be careful with the fumigation and your birds, give at least 5-7 days from the time that you fumigate the pen to when you move the birds from the brooding house into the pen. You don't want them to chock and die from the strong chemical of the fumigation. |
jamp:It is true, broiler is a lot of work, but I think once you have sales outlet, like the egg guys do, it is a matter of 6 to 8 weeks and they cycle is over and money in the bank. |
Oshlander:No wahala, we all are here to learn from one another. Check your email, remember, it will only serve as a guide, and if you take some not from this thread, you would have gotten some updates from everyone's questions and contributions. Good Luck. |
dozieihems:5000 layers is not starting small. And yes I think 2 plots can give you a space to that will take more than twice that your number. But if you are a newbie, 5000 is a lot, and get ready for the funds necessary to run it. And I think the info that you seek is already discussed here on the thread, so go back and start reading and taking note. Good luck. |
sleekman:I went home for the holidays to be with my family, I should be back before the end of this month. You are right, those plants you mentioned were talked about as things that can help. I spent good amount of money taking my concoction to the lab to test and test again. My believe is that a healthy bird can fend off any illness. So, lets see how this year will go for everyone. Good luck. |
olubankemi:I am glad that you appreciated my comment, I know your husband will see what you have seen, if you take your time and work with him, I could not do what I am doing now without the support of my wife, I was able to sell her the vision, had she not buy into it, I wouldn't not have been able to continue. I cannot say that we are making money from the farm yet, but the farm is sucking a lot of money from us, had she not been on the same page with me, it could turn to problem and look like a waste of the family's resources. So, my advise for you, is not to let the dream die. Stay focus and keep faith. |
jamp:But how can you get the market without starting? I say go in small, and build from there. We are coming up small small, I think this 2015 will be much better for us, we sold quite a few of our birds this holidays, and that is good, because our product is getting into the hands of more people, the idea for us now, is to get more customers that will patronize our birds on a regular bases. How is the egg side? I bought 200 day old layers to experiment, I want to see what will happen without given them the conventional medication/vaccination regiment, just the medication they get in their first 10 days. The experiment I conducted in 2011 worked, but they were only 10 layers, so you cannot count on that. I will see how it goes, then I will take lectures from you pros on that side of poultry business. Hope all is well |
sleekman:@sleekman, how was your holidays, hope all is well with everyone here. Thank you for coming to my aid, we can all learn from each other here, I think I have given General premises of my stuff here, some might have been able to pick on it but others might be wanting me to just spell it out. I am sure there are people here that have better stuff than I do. They might not just be talking but they are good. One cool thing about this our thread, is that we are not all conglomerates, most of us are mom and pop, there are so much info in this thread that you can get to any hieght in this poultry business. So, I think we should take what we have been given, add our own innovation to it and run with it. I have learned a lot this past year, and hope to do better this new year. Am I making money yet? For how much I have invested into my poultry, and still investing, Noooooooooo!!! Very far from it. |
olubankemi:@olubankemi, it is true that the poultry business is a very good and profitable one, but you need to have the full support of your husband to be able to progress. The reason some people might not tell you is that the business is not that easy, you are not going to start today and start making money, so, if you quit your job, know that you are going to relay on your husband's income for some time before the poultry can pick up. So, let it be a joint agreement because you are going to need him. I have said this in some of my post here, that poultry farming can be very challenging in the beginning if that is your only source of income., thus, mid you quit your job and your husband's income is going to be the only income in the family, you are going to need to work with him. And also the truth is that if you are going to make a real business out of this, it is going to cost you money. So, my advise, keep logging him, go into the egg distribution as he suggested and that will also bring you closer to the industry, don't just buy from egg depots but go to farms and buy from there, you can bet it cheaper but most importantly, you get to interact with farmer, learn about the business, know more about the challenges and the opportunities. This will help you know well what you are going into, and also I will advise that on one of your trips to buy egg at the farm, invit your husband to go with you, this way he too will see with you've seen, and who knows, he might change his mind and give you the support that you need. I know a couple that did what you are trying to do, the wife quit her job from the bank and started a farm, months later the husband joined her, their farm grow big, they sustained their family from the income from the farm, trained their children through university and send them overseas. So, it is doable but you need the agreement and support for each other. |
knowledge4:Boy! while you sound very encouraging, those of us already in the game know that there is a lot of work involved ooo and a lot of challenges. I am not saying that it is not lucrative ooo, but work de well well. To tell you the truth, You are in for a big one if it is your only source of income, because almost in your first year you won't even see your profit, not that you are not making money, but you won't see it, because there is always one thing or the other that is making you to put the money back into the business. I will say, give yourself 2 to 3 years to work out the kinks in the production and sales process. This has been my experience, when I have chicken for sale, I don't have ready customers, and when I have customers, I don't have chicken ready. Now it will take time to build us sales outlet and then have constant production to meet the sales demand. For me, I think next year will be much better, we have gradually started getting orders from different sources, and we have our own frozen chicken outlet, two of those and we will be starting a BBQ joint of our chicken along Ado road in Ajah. If we can sell at least 20 grilled chicken per night, that will put us at sales of about 600 birds monthly, and our two frozen outlet, can generate another 200 sales per month that will give us about 800 birds and we have some other supplies here and there to keep us going. So, with our cycle, we know that we need to raise at least about 1000 birds per month. And you know what, you make better rattail profit with your own sales outlets. when we see how our first branded BBQ joint goes, we will duplicate it in other areas, If we have 10 locations that sales at least 20 birds per night, that along can keep out farm going and we can make good money for our birds. eateries are killers, they will ask to buy your birds at N650/kg and on credit. I think we are going to do well this season, we have been receiving orders, we have broilers that was 5kg and 6kg dressed, they are like turkeys. Good luck guys, hope you all have a wonderful sales season. |
fishleg123:What we did was to go see what the people in the market are sell, knowing our estimated cost of goods produced, we add our margin and sell, we even sell to those who are reselling as well. |
utchlady:Because someone is rasing a few bird, that doesn't make him a farmer. That is what I meant, a lot of us here can not beat our chest and say that "yeah I sm a farmer" bev no me now, my poultry is on about 2 acres, what a good size slaughter house to defeather, and package the birds. I have six people working on my farm and for the amount of birds that I raise and the irregularities on it, I can not say that I am a real farmer. Some that is my point. The research you talked about was only with 25 broilers and 10 layers, so will you call me a farmer with any experience with just that exposure. |
major911:Done. |
sleekman:You are right |
