Idango: @fnk, your suspicion concerning Obasanjo farms may be in order. When we were trying to get our DOC , the guy managing my birds said he will not do it if i get from obasanjo farm, he actually said he will only help me to manage if i buy from CHI or Zartech .
I will try these other farms. Thank you.

davonny: Hello house,
Due to the nature of my job, I will not be having all d time for my birds. I can only be visiting once in two days. I'm intending employing the service of an experienced farm manager. Pls what do u have to say about this, does it worth it, is it safe, what about trust, will his salary not affect d gain excessively at d end of the day, pls house I need ur guidiance so much because I'm not experienced
Couple things that can hurt your farm and your profitability is the people that works there, what I mean is their ability to steal and bring in disease into the farm. Theft, is one big thing, one by one, they can sell off your birds/eggs. So having a trusted person is very important. I was at my farm couple months ago, and someone walked in asking to buy some eggs. Now we don't have eggs but imagine that we have and my people are not trusted people, harmlessly, they could sell the guy, 2,4, 6, or even 12 eggs. Or 1, 2, or even 6 grown birds, and before you know it, your farm is bleeding for profit.

Talking about salary, personally I don't think you need a certificate to attend to the birds in the farm, find someone, work with him or her at the farm for some time, create relationship of trust and teach them what to do daily on the farm. preferable he or she lives in the farm, but as much time as you can afford go to your farm and spend time with your people there, it is important.

Guys, please let keep this thread moving, I check on it everyday to see what is going on and what everyone is saying. I want everyone to know that this is a huge business opportunity, yes, there is a lot of work involved but it will pay out sooner than you know it.

As I sat in the farm with a friend yesterday, we kill couple of our birds to see how they taste, we add condiments on them and boiled one and BBQed the other one. Just seating there, enjoying the very good taste of the birds, I told my friend that how great it feels to seat in the farm, without the noise of vehicles, and the gba-gba-ti of the world out there, and knowing that if I work a little harder with my farm, I can build an output that can generate N1 Million, N2million etc profit weekly, and how joyful will that time be. You can create employment and in your little help feed the community around you. "Life is Good"

spenca: from your previous post it seems you are located around eti osa which is notorious for rains and very high velocity of wind ,you need a very covering for those birds if not they would keep reducing in numbers do make sure the heat is on overnight for a long while for about 4wks to be safe
You are so right, my guy at the farm says that it rains there everyday. i was at the farm yesterday, and was seeing lighting and thunder rumbling, thank goodness if didn't rain in the farm, but when we got out on the main road, which wasn't far from the farm, there was water every where.

Yes, what we have done is cover the whole outside lining with tarpaulin and inside the house build another house for the day olds. and from where we will run them for at least 3 to 4 weeks before opening them up to the bigger space in the poultry.

I will start on Monday with another 500 bird, and another 500 the upper week and continue till we have at least 2000 birds, and we will see how it goes. Thank you for your insight.
AgricultureRe: Starting A Poultry Farm (a Blog) by fnk: 11:35am On Nov 05, 2013
Thanks guys, yes it was a loss, but the truth is that I didn't feel that bad about it, because using 500 birds was a good middle way to learn what can or can not go wrong. imagine if I had started with 2000 birds as the people I bought the day old advised, I had wanted to, but I went with my gout feeling and started with 500 birds that I had in mind. So, it wasn't too little and not too much.

So, as I said in my last post, Do not compromise on heat for your day olds. I will post pix when the internet let me.

Again, thank you guys for your concern.
AgricultureRe: Starting A Poultry Farm (a Blog) by fnk: 11:00am On Nov 04, 2013
Guys, about 5 weeks ago, I started my first inflow of day old, we build a house that can hold about 5,000 birds and cornered one section for the day old. Now for your learning, never play with the heating on the day old from their first week to even their 3rd week, we didn't cover the very well the place that we kept the day old. So out of 500 day old birds, they died in droves from the cold that happened a few days from when we got them, so we have only 96 left. Now for me it was still experimental because my major thing is the use of V-mix for the bird and use no any medication what so ever. Now out of all the dead bird, none died from illness just the cold, so mitigating the cold in our next run, we will do very well. So, last week Monday the remaining birds turned 4 weeks and most of them weighed 2kg and today is their 5th week and some of them are already 2.5kg.
In the next couple weeks we will start another section, we have created a good covering/heating compartment for up to 2,000 day old but we will bring them in interval of 500 birds every 2 weeks till we reach 2,000 birds in the house and then watch them grow.

So, we got something going on here guys. Any ways, Don't mess around with the heating of your day old ooo.

benzion72: Please has anybody purchase Day Old Chick from Obasanjo Farm at Oluyole Estate Ibadan. What is the procedure and what is the minimum they sell thanks for any information
Call them, they will give you their account# to make your payment and schedule your pickup date. You will have to go there to pick up the birds, according to them, they only deliver if you are buying over 5,000 bird. Now, if you are picking them up, you need to be there very early in the morning 4-5 am if not you will be buying from agents that doubles the price. And the guys don't have the curtesy to keep your order for you, they will sell them and ask you to come back another time. This has been our experience, other might have had a better one.

Yes, it is very possible and they can also change the price on you. It happened to us with Obasanjo's Farms, and last minute they changed the price after we had paid for the birds for about a month.

My day olds came in yesterday, give then v-mix and mixed it in their water, that is all they are getting for medication. and we will see how they turn out in 7 weeks. We got 500 birds If everything works out, they will be between 2.5kg and 3 kg by the 7th week. I will post pix as internet allows.

Idango: The pots cost about N700 each. You will need to buy charcoals, a bag is about N1200 around IFO area of ogun state. You fill the pot with charcoal and and light the charcaol, you empty the ash and replace with new charcoala after 4-5 hours. The lenght of time the charcoal can last before completely burning off depend on the type of wood the 'coal was derived from. So far there are working perfectly. After the second week the pot will no long be required untill another set.
Thank you, I got 3 pots at Ajah market yesterday at N1200 each and some coal, we used it in conjunction with heat from light bulb last night, seems to be working.
Thank you again.

Tmex: what u re about doing is like throwing your hard earned money inside the lagoon and that's exactly wot it is because ur broilers don't just continue grown till eternity any feed given to broilers after 12 weeks is a big waste of resources because at ds level the broiler converts feeds into fats and hence a low return on your investment .so I advise that u sell off the birds and stock another fo december
@Gozychuks, Just running the numbers starting from today on the about 100kg feed/week, you would have spent about N100,000 on your 100 birds just on feeds by the second week of December, And that will mean an addition N1,000 expense per bird, my question now is that how much are you going to sell the bird to cover your cost and who is going to buy?
If you stock a new day old this week, you will still have fully grown 2.5kg or 3kg by december. So are you making a mistake? Yes you are making a big mistake which could discourage you or those around you from going into this business. As far as I am concern, if your birds stay more than 8 weeks, in your care, diminishing return will set in.

Spartan3d: Pls how can one source for buyers??
Visit your local restaurants, hotels, market women and tell them what you have, Non of this outlets buys from one source, or no one source can meet their daily demand, So, if you comb your area, you can get a lot of demand that you will not be able to service.
