Shma: nice, let's start with pic one. I just finished my research about it and I can tell that that city is planned, the rate of urban planning applied in that city is not a joke. Zoom the pic and see those houses appearing like shacks. Take a look at pic one, the closest view of that city, the tallest buildings has made other iconic highrises look dwarf. On other hand, Lagos has not at any point met the zoning criteria, you just showed me area of residential which is at close proximity with industrial area and that should also speak volume, take a look at pic two. I will agree with the bolded at the same time disagree, who said old cities were not planned? Go read about new York city... I now understand why that island looks ugly , we have such buildings in coastal region lamu old town to be specific, but when it come to our CBD, our government can't allow those houses to sprout from all angles that's why we have renovation project in town, old dwarf houses are being brought down to pave way for iconic structures and other important things. There are many areas/districts in a city and the place I showed was a part of Tokyo not planned. That's the same with Lagos. V/I, Ikoyi and Yaba were all planned and these were the core places called Lagos before it expanded. Besides, those are no shacks. They're houses built with European architectures as far back as 18th - 19th century and they have become historical monuments generating revenue to the government. But that can't be said of Nairobi. A place without history or culture until the British came and built it from the scratch. Unfortunately, it was not a planned city as at time it was built. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_planned_citieshttps://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planned_communityIf there is any city planned between Nairobi and Lagos, it's Lagos because no part of Nairobi is planned unlike Lagos with VI and Ikoyi planned. See below. However, there is no industrial area in Lagos Island. New York city was not planned from inception. Fact.

Politics › Re: What Does The S/west Produce That Compares With The North? by forgiveness: 8:30pm On Apr 13, 2020 |
kettykings: Are you going to count the contributions of igbo , chinese ,indian business men in lagos as part of the contributions of the south west ? The north according to the write up did not count the contributions of igbo , chinese ,indian business men in the north as their contributions, they did not count the contributions of yoruba in the north as their contributions What does the SW contribute that compares to the North? First of all, we need to use the standard measurement to determine what an area contributes to the society and the standard is GDP. What is GDP? GDP is considered the "world's most powerful statistical indicator of national development and progress".(Wikipedia). It's a monetary measure of the market value of all the final goods and services produced in a specific time period.(Wikipedia) And according to....The OECD defines GDP as "an aggregate measure of production equal to the sum of the gross values added of all resident and institutional units engaged in production and services (plus any taxes, and minus any subsidies, on products not included in the value of their outputs)." An IMF publication states that, "GDP measures the monetary value of final goods and services—that are bought by the final user—produced in a country in a given period of time (say a quarter or a year)." Now that we understand the meaning of GDP and what it stands for, we should also understand that it is divided or broken down into sector or industry of the economy. We have the service sector, Agriculture and industry sectors which are the three sectors of the GDP of Nigeria of which the services sector is the driving force of the economy. However, it's expedient to know the percentage each sectors contributes to the economy. Agriculture sector contributed 26% to the GDP in 2019 of which crop production accounted for the largest percentage of 90% in the Agricultural sector. The remaining are forestry 0.99%, fishery 2.04% and Livestock 6.68%. According to NBS, Cocoa remains the third largest export of non- oil commodity in Nigeria behind petroleum and gas. SW account for 60% of the total production of cocoa in Nigeria which is the 4th largest in the world.. Don't forget SW is the largest producer of Kolanut in the world and the largest Tobacco producer in Nigeria. The only region beside North producing Cotton and one of the largest producer of Timber in Nigeria. Cassava, Cashew, Palm oil, Coco yam, Yam, Citrus(Nigeria is the largest producer in Africa and SW is the second largest region in Nigeria), Banana & Plantain (Nigeria is the largest producer in West Africa while SW is arguably the second largest producer in Nigeria), Soyabean etc are produced in large quantities in the SW. https://www.nairaland.com/2521578/nigerian-states-what-produceSuffice to say, SW accounts for 45 -50% out of the 90% of cash crop production in Nigeria. In fishery, SW could account for 1% amd 3% Livestock (SW is the largest producer of poultry products in Nigeria). From all indications, SW contributes at least 10% to the Agricultural sector of Nigeria's GDP.

Shma: pic 1, be it an Indian city or wherever to me it doesn't look appealing, but the buildings looks iconic .. 2nd pic looks like malindi old town in coast region, how does it supposed to mean in this convo? 3. The last pic is eye appealing, those skyscrapers looks iconic, the zoning speaks volume. That city that doesn't look appealing is Tokyo is Pic 1 and the other one that looks appealing is also Tokyo. . As you can see, it's not planned and not different from Lagos Island. However, the second picture is actually Lagos Island. The point is most old cities are never planned and Lagos Island is oldest city in Lagos state. In terms of planned cities, many areas in Lagos were planned and other cities within Lagos state.

Shma: I have no problem with those dense shanty houses, my problem is how unplanned Lagos is , as a matter of fact, our city my be holding one of the biggest slums but when aerial caption(slant aeria to be precise,) will never show that underrated kibera slum. That's the reason Nairobi will look super iconic on photos, I know Lagos has that potential but the hitch is how unplanned Lagos is right from zoning to aesthetisism What city is this? Is it planned? Is it different from Lagos Island? I will come back to planning after you solve this puzzle.

Namibia (score 5.2) world ranking 23 South Africa (score 5.0) world ranking 29 Rwanda (score 5.0) world ranking 31 Cote d’voire (score 4.7) world ranking 42 Mauritius (score 4.7) world ranking 44 Morocco (score 4.4) world ranking 55 Kenya (score 4.2) world ranking 61 Botswana (score 4.1) world ranking 6 Cape Verde (score 4.1) world ranking 66 Senegal (score 4.0) world ranking 71 Agree. Kenya ranked high above Nigeria but Abuja Vs Mombasa in quality of road ranking, I don't. |

Shma: but bro, this is a hectic Convo.
Check out some
. Leven House, Mombasa Located in Mombasa’s old town, the building got its name from a British naval ship, the HMS Leven that visited the island in 1824. The building was rented by officers from the ship for use as an anti-slavery base. After renovations co-ordinated by the Mombasa Old Town Conservation Office and the Museums of Kenya, the building was reoccupied in 2010.
The panel said it is optimally oriented for the coast climate with major window facades in the North and South facing walls. It has light coloured walls with high thermal mass for cooling. It also uses local materials and technology and a natural ventilation system. Manda Airport, Lamu
Designed by Adventis Inhouse Africa, the terminal building uses solar photovoltaic panels and is perhaps the only terminal building that is fully solar powered. It uses locally available materials, has natural ventilation and lighting system, light coloured walls with high thermal mass for cooling and a wastewater recycling technology.
. Red Pepper House, Lamu It is considered one of the well designed on the East African coast. Designed by Urko Sanchez Architects, its makuti roof blends well with the surroundings. Much of the space inside has no walls, allowing guests to take in much of the tropical climate. It is optimally oriented for the climate with the major window facades in the North and South facing walls. Large shaded areas provide cooling to internal spaces while solar photovoltaic panels provide water heating and other power related activities. With extensive use of locally available and recyclable These are not certified and Kenya has only 5 certification. http://www.gbig.org/search/advanced?search%5Bflat_rating_program_ids%5D=Certification&search%5Bplace_ids%5D=29256

Shma: Mombasa has high quality roads than Abuja, many doesn't equate to development, you can be having more road network but the quality is wanting. Mombasa will beat Abuja in transport system, Mombasa is the home of second largest international airport after jomo kenyatta. Water services Abuja had none., I know you will cling on Abuja meter rail e.t.c to scope cheap points, but Mombasa will beat you ten nil in rail station., House system,??... what do you mean, mombasa has more posh houses compared to Abuja. . Bhuhahahaha! Quality road more than Abuja? Bhuhahahaha! What is your definition of quality road to start with? Mombasa is home to the second international airport in KENYA while Abuja is in the top 10 busiest airports in Africa and don't forget it is one of the only 4 airports in Africa with rail link. That's a TKO. In rail system, you dare not compare. It has 42.5 km Light rail which is just the phase one and a SGR connected to another city. You wanna compare? This is 3 zero already. More porch houses than Abuja? Bhuhahahaha! Abuja is competing with European cities not Mombasa. PS: it's by numbers of flight.
