joseph1013:

Bro, he's right.

Based on available data, the 94 set was not really as great individually as initially thought. As a team, they were a delight to watch. In that respect, they compare favorably with today's team. It was the '98 set that was full of very good individual players but we messed up our chances with poor tactics.

Oga, we live to fight another day. Today is not your day. grin
Hahahaha! Seriously, we don't have the likes of Daniel Amokachi who was the best foreign player in the Belgian pro league for two seasons in our current team. The only person that came close is Onyekuru but the Belgium league is not in the top 5 of top leagues in Europe now. While, the Belgian league then was rated in the top 5 and this simply placed it side by side with the French league and side by side with PSG. Therefore, I don't see any player in the mould of Dan the Bull in oir team.

Do we have a player in the mould of of Rashford Yekini in our current team? No

Do we have the second best African player in a top 5 league likened to France of today in our current team? A player in the mould of Chidi Nwanu? Nope

Do we have player that has scored 17 goals and 6 goals (in 9 games) in a top 35 likened to France of today and in the UEFA champions league respectively cure in our current team? A player who jus won the best African player in the Belgian league which was the 5 best league in Europe in 1993 prior to the WC. It is just like saying Mbbape who scored goals last season and moved to a better club like PSG or Barcelonia should be dropped because he didn't get enough playing time. Iam talking about Victor Ikpeba. Do we have currently in the team? None.

Do we have a player in the mould of gentile giant? Uche Okechukwu

Do we have Emmanuel Amuneke who made rave like Junior Ajayi in the best league and club in Africa?

Do we have Samson Siasia who shined in a league like France before he move to a league and club likened to the la liga and Athletico Madrid of that time?

I don't think we have such calibers of players in our team. Happy new year

My man you are still on this matter.Well let me add this cos you want to hear my view.

Honestly i don't want to talk on it again, everyone to his opinion and we must respect it but if simple discussion is leading to a stage as if we want to win WC i put stop to it and move on but due to respect i have for you let me chip in some words.

Pls i need to make some clarifications here and it will take a very intelligent and unbiased minds to understand my very simple point related to 94 set and present team.

I don't compare the two teams cos it's not yet time even i still rate Keshi 2013/14 team ahead of this present team based on their achievement but that does not mean i should ridicule Rohr team, they are just evolving so need for comparison.

On US 94 have made my comments and i still stand by it that the team was full of average players but as a team they look solid which we all saw at Afcon and US 94.

I don't think there is need for me to go to archives and be digging things out cos i followed the team passionately during Westerhoff era(89-94)it all started in Yaoundé against Cameroon and ended with Italy in US 94.

I folliwed the development of the players, how they are faring in their club sides especially Peter Rufai since Afcon 1984,Samson Siasia which i rate highly since 1985 U 20 WC in Moscow,Stephen Keshi who i followed since Libya 82,Rashidi Yekini since shooting star days,Austin Okocha since Mauritius 93,Mutiu Adepoju since Saudi 89 qualifiers played in Adamasigha stadium, Amokachie at Ranchers Bees due to my love for their Argentine coach Dominiques,i followed Amuneke since cairo 91 and i had great relationship with Mutiu Adepoju,Jayjay Okocha,Tijani Babangida through a friend,i remember telling icon4s that Tijani was taken to US 94 as a standby player even Ikpeba was nearly dropped for him.To cap it all i handled Clemens Westerhoff utilities and we do talk if he get the chance before he left Nigeria.

I'm saying this for you to know that i should be biased but i will not cos we need to put the record straight and not to run the present team down cos some certain players are not in the team.I should be here shouting Dele Aiyenugba up and down due to our close relationship,i was involved in his first professional contract as a player with Kwara star before moving to Enyimba and he still see me as a senior.Taiwo Awoniyi is like a son,Obafemi Martins a great pal to me through my junior cousin whom they shared the same agent in person of Churchill Olishe but have never come here to solicit for their inclusion in the team.

I don't think there is need to patch things up to express my opinions. It's my opinion based on what I know not based on oral history or secondary source.

Pls check this out

1.Peter Rufai. was a bench warmer with Go Ahead Eagles and later released before WC

2.Ben Iroha made just 21 appearance between 92-96 for Vitesse Arhemm

3.Austin Eguavoen couldn't tie a regular shirt with Kortrijk prior to WC and was released after WC.

4.Chidi Nwanu truly second African best in in 92/93 season with SK Beveren but got mid season transfered to Anderlecht and played just 9 games for Anderlecht prior to WC.later made additional 5 games and was released too

5.Samson Siasia was warming the bench throughout his stay at Nantes sitting down for Chad boy Japhet Ndoram and Patrice Loko.

6.Mike Emenalo was a non league player just like Sunday Sunday game prior to WC

7.Emeka Ezeugo a India based player who later joined Lyngy in Denmark

8.Uche Okafor who joined Hannover 96 in division two but always on the bench

9.Thompson Oliha playing for African Sports after moving from Asec memossa.

10.Efan Ekoku solid at Norwich but a misfit in Eagles.

11.Victor Ikpeba not regular with Monaco 93/94

12.Austin Okocha in and out of Frankfurt
Germany
13.Alloy Agu second choice in his Turkish club

14.Stephen Keshi already passed his prime at molenbeek.

15.Wilfred Agbonavbare good in his club Rayo Vallecano but second choice in the ational team.

I need to leave out Rashidi Yekini who was then reigning APOTY and solid with Vitoria Setubal,Sunday Olishe great form before WC,Mutiu Adepoju regular with Santander,Finidi George great with Ajax,Dan Amokachie superb with FC Brugge,Uche Okechucwu regular with Fernabache nd Emma Amuneke solid with Zamalek, meaning we have just solid 7 regular players in US 94 squad leaving out Oliha,Ekoku cos they don't look solid in eagles.

Pls rate this players for God sake based on their performance in 93/94 a season before US 94 World Cup.Honestly it was cos of this i appreciate their performance at US 94 so why not give Rohr team a chance and let see what they can do instead of unnecessary comparison.
The bolded had just put to rest your earlier assertion that we only had average players and you even went to that lenght to prove it by recognizing that only two players were not average in the first eleven.

But now you have suddenly changed mouth that 7 players were outstanding prior to the WC and to add salt to injury 5 of them were in the first eleven . Even Nwanu who was on your list of outstanding in the first 11 suddenly didn't make your list. grin

For someone who followed Nigerian football in that era to call foreign pros benchwarmer in an era anyone playing outside the shores of Nigeria were considered better. I am talking about late 80s when people started watching European champions league because of Stephen Keshi who was one of our best players in the Super Eagles before he even left for Abidjan and latter went to Belgium because he was banned from the Nigerian league. That was when Nigerians who were never interested in watching European leagues from 40s till lipsrsealed when people started watching the European league in the late late 80s because of Keshi. They were earlier preoccupied with the bitter competitions that went on among the clubs in that glorious era of Nigerian league.

Those players were the best in our league before they went to Europe and many of them were part of the 1990 and 1992 set that got to thefinals of AFCON.

Many of them even went straight into the first team of those European clubs and played regularly for 3- 4 seasons till 1993.

That is why I have never really spoken against the inclusion of Ahmed Musa because he has been tested and has been with the team for long. So, we know what he brings to the table.

Therefore, those players in the 1994 team case is not different from Ahmed Musa because they had experienced good football in a better Nigerian league, AFCON tournament and the Belgium league or other leagues for years before 1994 AFCON. And it was due for these reasons dey couldn't be dropped because of one season record.

So, how can we compare these players with Chidiebere Nwakali , Taiwo Awoniyi and Kelechi Iheanacho who have done nothing exceptional both in national team and in their club?

I do not even know what brought up the comparison in the first place.

However, thee is never a place I tagged the whole players average in the current team but my only problem is neglecting a better player playing regularly in a better league for a bench warmer in an obscure leagues. Simply.

Nevertheless, Sir, I wish you a happy new year.

We all love Rashidi. He is great. But by your standard and that of komekn, Rashidi who played just one season of first division football in Portugal will not smell Super Eagles team. Your adulation of him smacks of hypocrisy. It is we who insist that clubs should not be used to screen out good players whose adulation of him is authentic. You opposed Nwakali just because of his club. You would have jettisoned Rashidi for Ekoku since Ekoku was in a more fancy club.
Rashidi Yekini was a 3SC player btw 1982-84. It was the era 3SC and Enugu were the best in Nigeria and were in the top 2 best in Africa. It was the era players were chosen from our league because we don't have foreigners pros abroad and our league was very good. This explains why majority of players from these two teams dominated the 1980 Afcon winning team and because Yekini was in a team that won the league and reached the CAF champions league finals, he was called to play in 1984 AFCON. He was invited to the national team steadily based on his performance in another best league in Africa which was the best club in Ivory Coast. His performance there did not go unnoticed to had received another call up.

As you can see, he was playing for top clubs in one the best leagues in Africa before he got called and had played for Nigeria before he went to the 4th best league in the world where he was the 5th highest goal scorer in his first season.

Before he went to Victoria Setubal, he had already became the highest goal scorer in 1990 AFCON.

The point is, he was already an integral member of the team before he went to Portugal and even when he went there he proved he was not a fluke in his first season in a top flight league.

So, do not try to compare or justify Nwakali's invitation into SE because Nwakali has done nothing of note to distinguish himself even in that back water league which is not even in the top 20 leagues in Europe.

We have better players doing well than him in a better league. So, why do we ignore them for unknown or unproven Nwakali?

Performance, club or league are the criteria i use to pick a player.

Am I not the one clamouring for Sone Aluko? Why? He is a proven, tested and quality player.EOD

My dear forumites I pray you all to read this expose I want to do: Well, forgiveness you just put out the fact that Eguavoen was playing in Belgium. That's deceptive and you know it. Let's take a deeper look at the condition of Fc kortrijk from 1990-1994 that Eguavoen was there: 1990/91 season they were fourth from the bottom of 18 teams in division one. 91/92 season they were 17 on the 18 team table and were relegated. 93/94 season they were still in relegation. He played two seasons in division one in a low ranking team and another two seasons in relegation. But through your romance filled eyes this is still better for you than famagusta that is topping the league in Cyprus and Ebuehi who is just two seasons in the Eredivise.

When I saw Iroha's wretched club stats I just shook my head at your deception or ignorance. Here are the facts people: Iroha was at Vitesse from 1992-1996.he played just 21 times for a period of 4 years. Verdict: correct benchwarmer. Meanwhile he had been playing professional football for seven years before this time. Yet he is one of our best LB till date. This shows that what matters most for us is what a player does in the Gwg

Oliseh was at RFC liege from 1990-1994, he played 75 matches and scored three goals. Now divide the number of weeks in the four years with 75.that would give you an indication of his regularity(in fact he was first playing for their u -19 side). As for his goals just 3. Yet you are comparing him with Ndidi who played for two years at Genk with 64 appearances and four goals and is barely a year at Leicester with 33 appearances and two goals (all Oliseh's facts are settled but Ndidi's are still unfolding but one can see who already has better stats. He didn't feature in those UEFA matches for RFC Liege.

Uche played for 9 years for Fernerbahce with 191 appearances and 19 goals. Quite solid.

1993-1995 at Anderlecht 14 matches no goals
From his Wikipedia page: After three seasons he was bought by giants R.S.C. Anderlecht, who won the league twice during his stay. Nwanu played very few matches; he retired after an unsuccessful spell in RKC Waalwijk..
Truly no verdict.

I wanted to run away from this our first champions league winner Finidi but I still checked:1993-96, 85 appearances 18 goals for Ajax. VicMo has been more of a journeyman. Hard to put his stats together for club. In any case he doesn't play offensively for Chelsea. But when I checked their stats for the Super Eagles I was shocked: Finidi played for the Eagles from 91-2002(11 years) played 62 times and scored 6 times. VicMo has 28 appearances with 10 goals from 2012 till date. I just weak

Amokachi is an outstanding average
player better than Ighalo and Nwakaeme. Seriously and I love him

Let us look at Siasia you have used to bullet Iheanacho. Siasia was at Lokeren for six years from 1987-1993. Played 151 times and scored 31 times. Now let's look at him at Nantes. He was there from 1993-1995. He played 44 times and scored 4 goals. Iheanacho played 46 times at City and scored 12 goals. So who has better stats? Moreover note that Siasia had been playing professional football for ten years as at the time of his stint with Nantes while Iheanacho is just two years in the game
In the gwg Siasia played from 1984-1999 that is 13 years, appeared 51 times with 16 goals. Iheanacho has played from 2015 for the Gwg 13 times with 8 goals and he has not done even half of Siasia's time in the team.
Verdict: out of respect for Siasia let me keep quiet.

I checked Amunike's stats and that of Musa. Amunike's stats is just a bit better. Amunike won APOTY at zamalek playing 71 times and scoring 26 goals from 91-94. Musa did not win APOTY yet look at his stats for CSKA Moscow:2012–16 125 appearances, 42 goals. This should tell us how low the level of football in Africa was as at 1993.

Bottom line is that the 94 set were not better both for club and country more than this set as such(yes they won an Afcon but remember 2013 we won Afcon) . We have not even talked about those in the 94 set who were not in the first 11 ooo. But in the end such comparisons are deceptive because one set is done and dusted. Another is still unfolding.

However we can all see that it's through the soft eyes of a blind lover that forgiveness and komekn looks at the 94 set. The reality shows a completely different picture when compared to this current set. What I think is that football has improved so much from that time(personally I still prefer the 90's football but then I recognise that football has improved) and that is why the 94 set looks so glorious (plus they won Afcon) and this set looks ordinary in the eyes of some.

Amokachi was not tearing anything in Belgium. He joined super eagles while he was in ranchers bees of kaduna. He later went to Belgium. Siasia was warming the bench in Belgium. Kog45 has given a list of the club's the golden generation were playing in and they were all average players playing for average teams. Some were not even playing. They were permanent bench warmers. When i pointed it out to you the last time you said now is not 94 but here you are hyping amokachi. You guys hammering on the fact that our team is average don't understand what a team is all about. Its the same mentality that gets Nigerians hooked to certificates. We need a team with a winning mentality. That's all that matters. The story of the rabbit (stellar player/team) and the tortoise (average player/team) comes to mind.
If you acknowledged 4 ( Uche, Amuneke, Yekini & Amokachi) were great and not average out of the first 11 though I will still add Finidi George & Chidi Nwanu ( Second best African player in Belgium 1993) to make 6, then don't you think the bolded contradicts your assertion that 'they were all average playing for average teams?

Nevertheless, since, none of the monikers you mentioned disagreed to what you wrote about Ben Iroha, Emmanuel Amuneke and Finidi George then it is safe to say Taye Taiwo is better than Ben Iroha, David Alaba is better than Emmanuel Amuneke and Segun Odegbami is better Finidi George based on the stats you stated which i had had heated argument with some of these monikers that it is so. But then, they disagreed but you have done well to silent my critics with these piece of bitter truth with some facts. Kkkkkkk grin

I was the one that told them some players in the1980 set were better than the once in the 1994 set but they disagreed then. Now, dem don't nod head in agreement to what I said then that got me labeled..... grin

I hope none of them will come and start placing some players in the top 5 of the best players Nigeria ever produced both home and abroad. grin

Thank you. It was a good one.

However. I no wan fault some thinks for your post now hence I remain silent for now.

Happy new year to you all. grin

7. Finidi George- Ajax

Verdict. Finidi of Ajax vs Victor moses of Chelsea. Even
I wanted to run away from this our first champions league winner Finidi but I still checked:1993-96, 85 appearances 18 goals. VicMo has been more of a journeyman. Hard to put his stats together. 8. Daniel Amokachi - Club Brugge is the second most successful club in Belgium. The first and only Belgian club to reach the Finals of European cup. Prior to the time Amokachi went there in 1990 they had reached the semi finals of UEFA cup in 1988, won the league in 1988 &1990, won the Belgian cup in 1986 and won the Super cup in 1986, 1988, & 1990 before Amokachi helped them to win the league in 1992, the Belgian cup in 1991, the Super cup in 1991, 1992 and 1994 and finaly helped them to reach the semi finals of the cup winners cup in 1992 after his club had dumped out Athletico Madrid in the quarter finals. He even scored a goal the winning goal against Werden Bremen in the First leg of the semi finals. His performance didn't go unnoticed in 1992, 1993 and 1994 which won him 2 Ebony awards, Bronze Ebony award, Best foreign player in the Pro league award and the Bronze APOTY award.

Verdict: He played in the best club in Belgium Pro league and in the top 10 clubs in Europe. The pedigree of the club and individual laurels he won didn't portray him as average.

Amokachi vs Ighalo, vs Iheanacho vs Nwakaeme. TKO
Amokachi is an outstanding average player. Seriously.

9. Rashidi Yekini- There is no sense in trying to prove that he was a superstar in both Africa and Europe because doing that will be a mockery to African and European football. He was the best and second best player in Africa for two straight years going in the world. The best player of 1994 AFCON and 3rd best in 1990. The highest goal scorer in two AFCON already in 1994. The top goal scorer in Nigeria, Ivory Coast and highest goal scorer in the 4th best league in Europe in 1994. These were his individual laurels before going to the WC.

Verdict; no contest else TKO to Ighalo, Iheanacho and Nwakaeme.
We all love Rashidi. He is great. But by your standard and that of komekn, Rashidi who played just one season of first division football in Portugal will not smell Super Eagles team. 10. Samson Siasia. He moved from the 5th best league to the 2nd best league in Europe. Nantes was the third best club in France as at the time he went there and became the champions of Ligue 1 the next season. They even reached the semi finals of the UEFA Champions league in 1995. The point is Nantes was a potential candidate to win the league at that time because they already won their 6th league title in 1983, runner up in 85 & 86 and within the top 5 in 1992 & 1993.

Verdict; A proven goal scorer in the Belgium league moved to the second best league in Europe full of best footballers in Europe.
Samson vs Iheanacho. Fatality
Let us look at Siasia you have used to bullet Iheanacho. Siasia was at Lokeren for six years from 1987-1993. Played 151 times and scored 31 times. Now let's look at him at Nantes.

11. Emmanuel Amuneke. The best African player going to the world cup. Zamake was the best club in Africa.

Verdict, no contest else fatality on Simon, Iwobi, Etebor and Ahmed

Keep trying.

Bottom line is that the 94 set were not better both for club and country more than this set as such.

Rashidi was an integral member of the SE long before he went to Setubal. Now I discovered that the year (1990)Rashidi joined Setubal they were in the second division. Got promoted in the 93/94 season(the season he ranked as the highest goal scorer in the Portuguese league) and were relegated again in the 94/95 season. So basically our main striker played in a second division team that had a cameo appearance in the first division for just one season throughout the time our main SE attacker was there. In other words Rashidi basically was playing for a division two side in PORTUGAL! Going by your philosophy Rashidi will not near the SE not to talk of donning the Jersey and playing as our top nine. But here you are today celebrating him.

I discovered also that Ikpeba joined Monaco in 1993 struggled and only began to offer something in 1996 and by the 97/98 season he was the indisputable Prince of Monaco. That means he was struggling in Monaco for three seasons under Arsene Wenger but he later got it right. Today he is being named as one of the hot players but he was in the SE in 94 before he started scoring for his club. Going by your philosophy as you have shown towards Iheanacho, Ikpeba will not smell SE as at 94 through 96 when he was struggling. Iheanacho has done just one season in Leicester(and you know he had a good record in man city) and yet once you see his name you reel out putdowns (I can't call them criticisms because I don't think what you do is criticism anymore). Osimhen, a teenager is struggling at Wolfsburg in his first season yet you dish out putdowns lavishly.

The history of football shows that players struggle sometimes just like in every other endeavour in life. Not many know that Henry struggled while in Italy. It was on a fortuitous meeting with Arsene Wenger on a plane flight that Wenger told Henry that he was a striker not a winger and that meeting changed his life forever. Here's Wikipedia excerpt on Henry:Henry left Monaco in January 1999, one year before his intimate and closest teammate David Trezeguet, and moved to Italian club Juventus for £10.5 million.[2] He played on the wing,[9] but he was ineffective against the defensive discipline exhibited by teams in Serie A, struggling in a position that was uncharacteristic for him, scoring just three goals in 16 appearances.[10]

I think even Van Basten or gullit or Rijkaard (I can't remember which one of them) struggled first season in Milan before hitting their strides. And so many players have struggled like this. So why not ease up on this boys for now and come on them say at least two seasons from now?
@bolded is a false information because Rashidi Yekini was the 5 highest goal scorer in the Portuguese league with 12 or 15 goals in 1990/1991 season. Meaning he didn't join Setubal when dey were in division 2 though it was relegated the same season.

He was the highest goal scorer in the second division for two seasons before he went to division 1 to prove that his performance in division 2 were no flukes by becoming the highest goal scorer there. After that, he left for Olympiacos for the 1994/1995 season.

Meaning he played two seasons in the Portuguese league. Besides, Rashidi was already the top goal scorer in Afcon 1990, top goal scorer in the best leagues in Africa at that time before he went to Setubal.

It is just like Mikel Obi and Ighalo going to China.

Moreover, Ikpeba was the best African player in Belgium 1993 after scoring 17 league goals and after he helped his club to win the Belgium cup in 1990. This was what propelled him to the second
best club in France which was the second best league in Europe. Remember, he went to replace the one time African best player of the year George Weah who went to PSG and was up against Klinnsman, Thierry Henry and David Trezegue. Nevertheless, Ikpeba scored 6 goals out of 9 matches in UEFA Champions league league that helped them to reach the Semi finals. Since, he started all those matches ahead of one of those top players, don't you think he was rated then? Sure, he played some league games too.

Ikpeba was going up. Different senerio.

Even when both competitions are age grade competitions. I am not comparing both players. I am only seeing your bias. Forget solanke as far as specific discussions on the SE is concerned. He doesn't matter to us in that regard. We can only talk about him when talking about football generaĺly.
Pray for Oshimen to start playing first before you compare him with Solanke.

If both comes good it is for our benefit but to turn blind eyes and say all is well with Oshimen is the major problem here.

And this is super for you . so super to the extent you will say 94 were not average but the present crop are average. So it's by champions league goals now abi? When Onyekuru is mentioned as doing the equivalent of what Ikpeba did you will put Onyekuru down.

Finidi was at Ajax? Is that it? So Vicmo is at mamelodi sundowns? And Ndidi is at Kitwe United of Zambia?

We had players at Anderlecht? Where is Onyekuru? Are you so determined to be blind? I was expecting that you will mention AC Milan or Inter. Were the 94 set better as individuals? I adopt Kog45 analysis as mine to answer this question. But were they all playing in better clubs as outstanding players. No! Clubwise there's no difference with the present crop contrary to your false romanticism of the past.
Quit this comparisons. It's getting ridiculous. After some time I will let this issue rest trusting I have done enough to counter your false narrative. I will leave you to your prejudice.

What The NFF Is Doing To Cap The Likes Of Olosunde, Uwakwe, Amaechi? Pinnick Replies

Nigeria Football Federation boss Amaju Pinnick has revealed that key officials are working behind the scenes in their bid to invite foreign-born Nigerian talents to Nigeria's national teams.

The likes of Matthew Olosunde (Manchester United), Xavier Amaechi (Arsenal), Tariq Uwakwe (Chelsea), Dennis Adeniran (Everton) and Tayo Edun (Fulham) are eligible to represent Nigeria's youth teams but presently turn out for their countries of births.

Pinnick has stated that NFF Vice President Seyi Akinwumi has set the ball rolling but diplomatically refused to mention the foreign-born talents they have approached over a potential call-up in the near future.
Recently, American-born Arsenal-linked striker Lateef Omidiji Jnr was bound to play for the United States U17 team until he was convinced by Akinwumi to wait for his chance with the Golden Eaglets.

''I have the first Vice President Seyi Akinwumi, he is also a member of the CAF Youth Committee, he's doing a lot in that regard,''
.
''Only last week there were some messages he sent to me for approval and I gave him the go ahead.

''You can imagine the caliber of youth players coming in, we will be able to select them, we will be able to put them in our database but we can't come and start saying because this same Nigerians will call them and discourage them from coming.''
As many as six players of Nigerian descent eligible to represent the Flying Eagles - Fikayo Tomori, Joshua Onomah, Dominic Solanke, Ademola Lookman, Sheyi Ojo and Ovie Ejaria - assisted the Young Lions win the FIFA U20 World Cup in the summer.

Nigeria Line up against Bulgaria.

1.Peter Rufai. Go Ahead Eagles. Belgium

2.Austin Eguavoen. Kortrijk. Belgium

3.Ben Iroha. Vitesse Arnhem. Holland

4.Sunday Olishe. Rc Leige. Belgium

5.Uche Okechukwu. Brondby Denmark

6.Chidi Nwane. Anderlecht Belgium*

7.Finidi George. Ajax. Holland*

8.Daniel Amokachie. Cercle Brugge Belgium

9.Rashidi Yekini. Vitoria Setubal. Portugal

10.Samson Siasia. Nantes. France

11.Emmanuel Amuneke. Zamalek Egypt.

Indeed your truth is bitter.

Happy new year in advance
No. Name ...

1. Rufia - Eredivise

2. Austin Eguavoen - Kortrijk was in the top 5 leagues in Europe. It is just like playing in France.

Verdict: laudable. Augustine in top 5 league vs Shehu in back water league, or vs Tyrone in Eredivise which is in the top 10 league. Do you want to compared french league(Belgian league) with Eredivise of today? N.O NO. The gulf in class is too much.

3. Ben Iroha - Viteses played in the UEFA cup quarter finals for the second time in three seasons in 92/93 and Ben was part it. Don't forget he left Asec Mimosa before he went there.

Verdict. Played for a top 4 club in Eredivise. If not how did they qualify for UEFA cup?

Ben's Viteses vs Bryan Idowu's Amkar Perm vs Echiejile's Sivapoor. The difference is clear.

4. Sunday Oliseh - RC Liege was in the top 3 or 4 best club Belgium as at that time. It won the Belgium cup in 1990 ahead of Anderlech with Victor Ikpeba. They were in the top 5 leagues in Europe and among the top clubs in Europe.

UEFA Cup Winners' Cup:
- quarter-finalists in 1991

UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League:

- semi-finalists in 1964
- quarter-finalists in 1990

Verdict; Sunday Oliseh' RC Liege vs Ndidi' Leicester city, vs Mikel Ogu' Sheeber. Draw

5. Uche Okechukwu - Fernerbahce was fluctuating btw the first and 2nd in the Turkish league.

Verdict. Uche situation was better than Ekong but the Germany league were Balogun plays is better.

6. Chidi Nwanu - Anderlecht. Chidi Nwanu was even the second best African player in the Belgian league in 1993.

Verdict. No contest

7. Finidi George- Ajax

Verdict. Finidi of Ajax vs Victor moses of Chelsea. Even

TKO

Fatality

11. Emmanuel Amuneke. The best African player going to the world cup. Zamake was the best club in Africa.

Verdict, no contest else fatality on Simon, Iwobi, Etebor and Ahmed

Thank you.I can say it anywhere that our US 94 team were average but solid as a team.
Since you can't define average, I would like us to reason a little?

Which league in this era can we compare with the Belgian league of that era?

It is very easy to say France because PSG and Monaco dominated this era in the French and even in Europe while Anderlecht and C. Brugge dominated in Belgium and in Europe in that era. And the both were/are rated within the top 5 - 6 leagues in Europe if we compare then and now.

Anderlecht and C. Brugge were even better than the current PSG and Monaco of today.

Having said that, can we say Mbbape is an average player?

If not, then how can you say Victor Ikpeba, Daniel Amokachi and Chidi Nwanu were average players?

Victor Ikpeba won the Ebonyi award in the Belgian league which was among the top 5 in Europe in 1993 before he moved up the ladder to the top 3 leagues and one of the best clubs in Europe.

Daniel Amokachi also won the Ebony award and the best foreigner award in Belgium twice and came third btw 1992- 1994. Don't forget that Club Brugge reached the UEFA champions league finals not too long and the semi finals of cup winners cup in 92. They were just like the Monaco of today and that was the club he played for prior to the WC.

Chidi Nwanu was played for Anderlecht prior to the WC and he was the Silver winner of the Ebony award after he came second behind Ikpeba while Daniel Amokachi was third in 1993. Don't forget that Anderlecht was in the finals of cup winners cup in 90 and reached the quarter finals of UEFA cup. They were among the best of course.

Rashidi Yekini was the highest goal scorer in the 4 or 5 best league in Europe in 1993. Don't forget he was the top goal scorer in the lucrative Nigerian and Ivory coast league. He had won the highest scorer award in two AFCONs and won the best player of the tournament in 1994 though he was the third in the previous tournament. Oh! A one time AFOTY and runner up at as 1994.

Emmanuel Amunike won the best footballer award in 1994. Zamalek was also a force in Africa.

Stephen Keshi already played for Anderlecht.

What is the rating of the Belgium league of these days?

Can you compare it to that Belgium league of that era?

Were are the average players here?

I have said this several times.

Consider Taribo West playing non stop first man on the team sheet for Inter-milan. Without doubt considered one of the best defenders in Europe.

To this day Yekini who was a top goal scorer in the Portuguese league is still recognised.

We had attacking players who were among the cream of the top clubs in Europe.

Unity and supposed team spirit can not substitute quality.
But that is what people wants to sell to us. You can image people trying so hard to undermine the 1994 set by telling us they were bench warmers.

They try to bring in this confusion to accommodate some unproven players in the SE.

What!? Anderlecht the best club in Europe!?

If they tell you the Belgian league is kindergarten based on these stats over 6 years will you believe it?

Based on this, which league do you think a player would like to go as at 1986?

Off course, the Belgium was among the most attractive ant top league in Europe hence the exodus to Belgium league by these Nigerian players at that.

Or does that not explain why many Nigerians went Belgium league?

Therefore, it is indeed convenient to say that Chidi Nwanu, Austin Eguavoen, Stephen Keshi, Victor Ikpeba, Samson Siasia and Peter Rufia played against the best club in the Europe and the fourth best league in Europe going to the WC.

How can a club from kindergarten league be the third best club in Europe?

The fact remains that the Belgian league was the most consistent league in the top 5 in Europe from Early 80s to late 80s.

Pls, take not of the rise of the Portuguese liga and clubs from that time. They have one of their club in the top 5 and another one in top 10.

Did you ask me why Nigerian players are not in Seria A?

As you can see they had options to choose from among the top 5 leagues in Europe and Italy was not the only best options.

As you can see we had players in the top 5 leagues in the world with two playing with the best at one time. Anderlecht off course!

Let me inform you that Sunday oilseh, Alloy Agu and Daniel Amokachi moved to the fouth best league in the Europe. The next three seasons Victor Ikpeba and Daniel Amokachi had won 3 Ebony awards and best foreign player award while Chidi Nwanu came 3rd once.

Based on these facts from a reliable concrete source Onyekuru is not doing wha Ikpeba and Daniel did. Why? He is not playing in the top 4 league in Europe and he didn't win any individual award.

Can you now they were the Mbbappe of this era?

The bolded no 4 had been put rest going by this stats that proved the Portuguese league was among the top leagues in Europe in the early 90s

Benfica was rated the 4th best in Europe while fc Porto was slightly among the top 10 club in Europe.

In addition, two Portuguese club reached the finals of the UEFA champions league 3 times from 87 - 90 but won it once.

This was the season Rashidi Yekin went to Portugal which was the 5th best league in Europe as at 1990. This was before he dominated all the leagues he went to then. Pls, don't tell me that the Nigeria league was substandard in the Early 80s because I whitenesed live matches in 84 and 85 and I can tell you it was standard with quality football. It explains why we won the AFCON the time in 1980 and got to the finals of Champions league and cup winners cup regularly during that era.

From 1975 - 1990, there was no way you will not see a Nigerian club in any finals of the highest African tournaments.

Shooting stars and African sports were the top clubs in Africa then as at the time he play there.

Let me remind you that was he the highest goal scorer in all the leagues he went to prior to the WC. He was African player of the year in 1993 and runner up in 1994. Don't forget he was the overall best player of the 1994 AFCON. Emmanuel Amunike was tge best African player in1994 going to the WC.

It was right of me to say Rashidi Yekini, Daniel Amokachi and Ikpeba were banging in goals ithe top 5 leagues in Europe.

[quote author=Mujtahida
post=63699988]
The top league in the 90's was the Italian league. Far far superior to others at that especially in the early 90's(infact beginning from the late 80's with Sacchi's revolution) and then Spain. Go do a study of the top players of that era and tell me where they were playing. Where was Van Bast, Riboldedd? Maldini, Baggio, Stoichkov, Batistuta, Romario were all in Italy. Of all the players that won the world best in the period under review not one from the Dutch league(indeed Van Basten, Gullit and Rijkaard left Holland for Italy) apart from Ajax all the teams making the UEFA champions league finals in the period were from Italy and Spain mostly

no 2 If by European champion you mean champions league then you are wrong unless you mean the glory days of the Dutch league way back in the 70's when Cruyff led Ajax to the Super cup or the super cup in the 95.If it's the Champions league they won it first against Milan.

And how many players did we have at Ajax in 94? Just Finidi. We have Moses in Chelsea today. Not comparing them but since its big clubs you want I give you Moses.

Nope, Portugal was just one place where football was played. Their glory days was in the 60's with Eusebio and put your eyes on the period (1990-1994) cos Italy reigned supreme then. The bolded is pathetic. So don't we have teams like Qarabag and teams from the back water leagues of Europe competing in the Champion's league? So 20 years from now you will use that to argue that Azerbaijan and Romania were top leagues in Europe because their teams were COMPETING in the Champion' s league. no 1 Belgium was the kindergarten of the major leagues in Europe in the 90's. Check UEFA champions league finals from 90-2000 if you will see one Belgian or Portuguese club. None.

Pay attention to the period under review. Whatever those clubs had achieved before the 90's when our players began to make their way in numbers to Europe is for the glory of those clubs. It has nothing to do with our players. You yourself has acknowledged that the best league then was Italian serie A. Fact is we had no single player there.

Teams play better now and football has improved now as a team sport. But the players of that era were far technically superior and gifted than the players of today. So you are making my point for me. You can only elevate the past team over this guys in regard to their clubs and leagues only if we had the majority of our players then in Italy and Spain or if the majority of our players today are playing in Zanaco and Orlando Pirates. As far as I can see, club wise they are both on the same level if this current crop are not even better because the 94 crop had lots of unattached players and bench warmers.

no 1 Going by what? Portugal was not top 3 or 4 in the early 90's. As for Rashidi, God rest his soul. But let me (thanks to the Internet and excellent record keeping of oyibo people) burst your bubble. Rashidi joined vitoria setubal in 1990-94. In the 90/91 season vitoria setubal were relegated to division two. In the 91/92 season they were in the second division through to the 92/93 season. In 93/94 they were promoted to the primera division and that was when Yekini scored 21 goals to top the charts. By 94/95 they were relegated. So Rashidi was playing in a low profile club in a league which was just one among others in Europe. Wikipedia for Setubal:
After another yo-yo period from the mid-1980s to the mid-2000s, Vitória returned to the Portuguese top flight for the 2004–05 season and have remained there since
.
It's not like it at all. It's more like what it was then. I can't find anything in the present to compare to that.

Ajax won the Champions league in 95. As at 94 Ajax were not the best team in the world.

no 3 Onyekuru is doing the equivalent of what Ikpeba did.

Ikpeba didn't come into his own at Monaco(which he joined 1993-1999) in the 93/94 season. He had a tough start at Monaco and it was from 96 that he gradually became a success ( a lesson for the Iheanacho naysayers). They were not the Mbappe of that era. If they were they would have been playing in Italy and Spain. PSG of Mbappe era has Neymar for godsakes. That should tell you the level.

I said give me the INDIVIDUAL awards the OTHERS in the team apart from Rashidi and Amokachi won. You've given me nada. You just mentioned Rashidi and Amokachi again. Finidi won nothing in 94 and nothing individual throughout his career. Ikpeba too won nothing individual as at 94. (I am pegging it to 94 because that is the WC year just like 2018 is the WC year for this crop)

It's like you are dwelling in the 80's. I am talking early 90's. Forget what Belgium was in the 80's. The leagues and clubs of both squads are comparatively at the same level. fact is the 94 team was full of bench warmers, unattached players and players in India and ivory Coast. You can't change that fact notwithstanding that Amokachi and Yekini were outstanding. In the end whatever their club or league levels they got the job done to the extent they could and they rightly deserve to be called golden generation. This current guys too have given indications that they can rise up to that level and better that record. Now a little something for you to chew on: Iceland has no stellar quality except perhaps the guy that plays for Everton. Yet they beat a star studded England side at the Euros and edged out a vastly superior Croatia to qualify for the World Cup despite the Modrics, perisic, mandzukics, Konami, Rakitic boasted of by Croatia. Football has moved beyond stellar names. This much I - who loves the 90's with Baggio them have realised. I know it's comforting to you when you see a team filled with star dust but it's cold comfort these days. Team work wins. Not stellar names and big clubs. This is the age of Aquarius. The age of Pisces is gone.
The Belgian league was the third best in Europe in 1980 and a Belgian club was the second best club in Europe going by the UEFA rating. This is counters your false notion that it was a kindergarten league as you claimed in the number 1 @bolded.

Another of your wrong submissions in bolded no 2 that the Dutch league glory days was in the 60s, Ajax won their first champions league in 95 and only Ajax was prominent in Eredivise have also all being countered because Eredivise was rated the 4 best in 80 and Ajax and PSV were one of the best clubs in Europe. Mujtahida:
Please tell me which individual award the others won. Abeggi they were average! Of all the players then making waves in the world mention one Nigerian, just one. And please don't come up with top leagues falsehood. The top leagues in the 90's was the seria A and La liga. Ajax beating Milan in 95 was a surprise sort of. We had no single player in Seria A except later when Taribo joined. Just two players in la liga(I am sure it would be a mid table teams those santander( they 8 on the table and Vallecano were relegated that season) Jay Jay was chopping bench at eintracht frankfurt, same with Eguavoen and Siasia, seems Keshi had no club, ikpeba by then was not a regular at Monaco, Ezeugo was playing in India, oliha in cote d'ivoire. Rufai too was hardly a regular at his club. No first team player in the EPL. Ekoku was in midtable Norwich city but he was not a first team player.

Today we have players playing in the EPL, the Bundesliga, in Portugal, in Turkey, in Belgium just as those in the golden generation yet you want us to believe that the leagues in those same countries then were top leagues just because you don't want to see anything good in this team until players of your specific choice are in the team. I respect the 94 team for the good they did to the image of our football . And same respect should be accorded this team.

Abeg people help me see the teams USA 94 squad were playing in (none was playing . And most of them were bench warmers. Thank God for the Internet. Na so you for bamboozle us and make us feel those guys were playing for teams in the mold of Chelsea, Man United, Real and barca.
HahahahHahahaha! Certainly certainly, you don't know the top leagues in Europe during that era because if you do then you will not analyse the way you did.

How can you say Ajax defeating Milan was surprising when Ajax was already an Europe.an champion?

The Dutch league was one the best in the world until late 90s when money bags came into the system.

If you go to the Dutch league then, you are in a top league.

However, from 80s towards the early 90s the Belgian, Portuguese and Dutch league were at the pinnacle of European football. They were competing for the UEFA cup and Champion league.

So, it was a very laudable achievement if you played in those leagues during that era. You can go and check the finals of both competition den.

It was the era before the Italians totally took over from 90s onward.

So if we have to go by that era, the Seria A was the best followed by the Bundesliga, EPL, Portuguese liga, Eredivise, La liga and The Belgium pro league. French league is not left out too.

The gap inclass was not that much then compare with today.

Going by this, Yekini was winning thehighest goal scorer in the top 3 or 4 best league in the world.

It is just like becoming the highest goal scorer in the EPL or Bundesliga of today. Don't forged Figo was in the Portuguese liga then.

Finidi was playing in the best club in the world.

Daniel Amokachi and Victor Ikpeba performed in the best league at that time. It was just likeplaying in Ligue 1 of today.

They were the Mbappe of that era hence the interest from Everton and Monaco. I likening Monaco of those days to Athletico Madrid of today.

The reason Daniel Amokachi moved to Everton was because the EPL became lucrative from the early 90s. Off course he move from UEFA champions league finalist and one the most consistent club in the Champions league and Europe.Club Brugge.

I just gave you 4. Four times what you asked for though they were many.

I know this things because the Belgian league was showed regularly in that era bylocal channels because it was very good and popular. EPL became only popular early 90s after it was restructured.

Don't try to console yourself with bench warmers.

Don't get Mujtahida wrong, US 94 was a team of eager players who are ready to prove to the world that they can do it,truly we have talents but as at that time most of them are in average clubs except Finidi at Ajax and Chidi Nwanu at Anderlecht.
Pls, difine average?

Five Super Eagles players who need January loan moves
Jide Alaka

The January transfer window will open in three days and it must be a window of opportunity for some Super Eagles players desirous of being in Gernot Rohr’s 23-man squad to feature at the 2018 FIFA World Cup that kicks off in Russia on June 14.

The mix of these 23 players who will be in Russia is still fluid in Rohr’s thinking with insiders revealing the German trainer has six to eight vacant places left to fill. Some of the players who featured in the qualifiers are not sure bets for Russia 2018 on account of not getting enough minutes at their various club sides so the transfer window in January will be very important.

Here are six players who need January loan moves:

Kelechi Iheanacho
Based on goal scoring stats, this should be a no-brainer, but the former U-17 World Cup MVP is not getting the minutes at Leicester City. After his £25 million summer move from Manchester City, Iheanacho has played just 555 minutes in the EPL and in the Carabao League Cup, EFL Trophy, and with the U-21 side in PL 2. He has scored just twice.
But for Nigeria, he played six matches in 2017 – three friendlies and three 2018 World Cup qualifiers, and he scored four goals. Between now and the World Cup, the Super Eagles will play five friendly matches, which are not enough to keep Iheanacho sharp for matches against Croatia, Iceland, and Argentina.

There are teams in the EPL looking for a proven goal poacher or even teams outside of England. He must play consistently between January and May to have a place in Gernot Rohr’s 23-man squad not to talk of a starting shirt!

Ahmed Musa
One of the assistant captains of the Super Eagles, Ahmed Musa’s time at Leicester has become catatonic. When he transferred from CSKA Moscow in 2016, we thought he would be Jamie Vardy’s competition but now he is not even making the bench under Claude Puel. Musa has not featured for Leicester in the EPL this season but has played 448 minutes for the U-21 side in PL 2 and in the EFL Cup, scoring three goals.

This club form has carried over to the Super Eagles where he has become a fringe player with the likes of Moses Simon and Alex Iwobi ahead of him in Rohr’s thoughts. Musa is still the only Nigerian player to have scored twice in one match at the World Cup, and at 25, still has a lot more productive years ahead. There were rumours he would make the switch to Hull City, but the manager, his former manager at CSKA, Leonid Slutsky, has been sacked.

Vincent Enyeama
One position the Super Eagles do not boast a sure starter is between the posts. Former No.1, Enyeama, is back training with Rohr casting furtive glances at the Eagles centurion. But, if he wishes to be in Russia, the place is definitely available, the question is if he wants to be there. If he pursues a loan move in January from Lille, it would be a pointer to his ambition of coming out of international retirement with Rohr waiting with open arms.

Brown Ideye
The central striker started the World Cup qualifiers but has since fallen on hard times at Chinese side, Tianjin Teda. With Henry Onyekuru likely to miss the World Cup because of injury, Ideye could still get on the plane but he needs to sort out his transfer quickly. A proposed move to La Liga side, Alaves, is said to have broken down but in a recent interview, the 29-year-old revealed to Score Nigeria, “What happened in China happened, I still have two years left on my contract there, but I am looking forward and hopefully I will soon get myself a good offer and focus on playing again.”

Isaac Success
A lot of promise is going to waste here. Rohr actually rates Success very highly and any sort of good form between January and April will convince the German to include the 21-year-old because he offers a lot of options for the team’s attack. A bundle of power, pace, and trickery, Success can operate across the front lines but he needs to be match-fit and focused to get in the 23. A loan move in January to teams like Brighton; Huddersfield would see him get the minutes and sharpness to convince Rohr. Success has played just once this season – an EFL Cup encounter against Bristol City in which he scored.

Premium times.

Are you saw what I am sawing? grin
