…3 hospitals refused to treat officer By Chinenyeh Ozor Nsukka—It was tit for tat at Nsukka in Enugu State last week, when a policeman, Corporal Robert Ugwanyi, was stoned to death for killing a commercial motorcyclist, Mr Festus Onah, shortly after he had come out from a restaurant, where he had gone to eat. Onah, whose skull was blown open by the policemen’s bullet, had his brains splashed all over the area, prompting a spontaneous attack on the policemen by passers-by and other onlookers. Before the incident, residents of Nsukka had been grumbling over the activities of policemen and thugs attached to the state Ministry of Transport, who stop motorists for their “MOT particulars” only to end up extorting between N10,000 and N30,000 from them. The police killing occurred when some policemen attached to a task force set up by the Nsukka Local Government Council, were trying to compel or force traders to relocate to the newly completed Building Materials Market on the outskirts of the Nsukka metropolis. South East Voice gathered that when the task force members were sealing building materials shops at the Beach Area, some members resisted, insisting that they had no reason to move to the new site as they were not affected by the local government by-law. One of the traders was reportedly said to have told the task force members that he dealt on animal feeds, hence he was not affected by the directive. However, as argument raged, other traders from a near-by small food materials market and other passers-by gathered to watch the development. It was further said that as the argument was degenerating, Ugwuanyi, who was said to have recently come to Nsukka on transfer, reportedly fired a shot from his assault rifle. The bullet hit the late commercial motorcycle (okada) rider, Onah, who was oblivious of what was going on and he died instantly. Late Onah, who was married and had six children, hailed from Ibagwa-Aka community in Igboeze South Local Government Area, and was alleged to have relocated from the North-East in the heat of the Boko Haram menace, to his home town, from where he travelled to Nsukka daily for his okada business. However, as soon as the crowd noticed that the okada man was stone dead, they descended on the armed policeman and began to stone him until he became unconscious. His colleagues were said to have managed to collect his gun as he was being stoned before running back to the Nsukka Divisional Police Headquarters for reinforcement, before returning to the scene to rescue him. However, it was already too late as doctors at the near-by Bishop Shanahan Hospital could not revive him and promptly referred the patient to the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, UNTH, Ituku-Ozalla on the outskirts of Enugu metropolis, but doctors could not attend to him there. Ugwuanyi was again rushed to the Park Lane Hospital, Enugu, where the policemen carrying him were told that there was no bed space before he finally gave up the ghost. The Police Public Relations Officer, Ebere Amaraizu, confirmed the deaths, saying that the Police were investigating the matter. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/07/nsukka-residents-stone-policeman-death-killing-okadaman/

LAGOS—A 34-year-old man, Kennedy Michael, has been arrested by police in Lagos for allegedly impregnating his 13-year-old daughter. Kennedy Michael… I don’t know what came over me. The suspect, who was said to have been sleeping with his daughter since she was in primary 5, reportedly connived with his live-in lover, Ijeoma Ndukwu, to terminate the pregnancy. The suspect was also accused of defiling a neighbour’s 18-month-old baby, who was kept in his care. A neighbour, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said: “Michael and his wife have been separated. He later brought his daughter to live with him in Lagos. “But we started noticing changes in her and encouraged her to tell her father to take her to the hospital, where it was discovered that she was pregnant. The father reportedly told his live-in lover, Ijeoma Ndukwu, to assist him abort the pregnancy. This caused problems between them. “As if that was not enough, he was alleged to have fingered a one-year and six months old baby in the same compound. The child’s father reported the case to police.” Father of the child allegedly molested, Uche, told policemen: “My wife discovered that our baby had a tear in her private part when she wanted to bathe her. Before then, it was only Michael that was with the baby inside his room. “We took her to Mende Health Centre, where doctors confirmed our fears. It was while there that a neighbour informed us that he was violating his daughter as well.” Victim’s account When accosted, the Junior Secondary School 2 girl, who confirmed that her father had slept with her several times, disclosed that the last time he had sex with her was July 8. Asked why she did not confide in anyone about the defilement, the teenager said: “I could not tell anyone because he threatened to kill me. My mother and my father are separated. I live with my daddy and my step-mother, while my mother lives in Sagamu. “My father threatened that I must not tell anybody about what he was doing to me. He uses force to have sex with me.” Aggrieved neighbours were said to have alerted the Child Abuse and Domestic Violence Agency in Alausa, Ikeja, from where police were brought in. On his part, the suspect expressed regret over his actions, saying he did not know what came over him. Docked Meanwhile, he has been dragged before Magistrate B. Osunsanmi. The prosecutor, Sergeant Olakunle Orebe, argued that the act was punishable under Section 137 of the 2011 Lagos State Criminal Law. The magistrate, Osunsanmi denied Michael bail and ordered that he be remanded pending the legal advice from the Department of Public Prosecutions, DPP. Osunsanmi adjourned the case till October 11 for further hearing. Read more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/07/man-impregnates-13-yr-old-daughter-aborts-pregnancy/

Abuja – The Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has named Salisu Yusuf as the new Super Eagles Head Coach following Frenchman Paul Le Guen’s rejection of the job. The Technical and Development Committee of the NFF on Monday recommended to its executive committee that Le Guen be appointed Super Eagles Technical Adviser. The Frenchman claimed that he rejected the offer before his recommendation to the NFF executive committee. The NFF, however, in a communiqué after its executive committee meeting on Wednesday, said that Yusuf had been appointed following its rejection of the recommendation of its Technical and Development Committee to appoint Le Guen. “The Executive Committee instructed the Technical and Development Sub-Committee to, within the next seven days, recommend a candidate for the post of Technical Adviser for the Super Eagles. “It noted that the refusal of Le Guen, earlier recommended by the sub-committee o accept to be given targets as well as unwillingness to live in Nigeria made his candidature unacceptable to the board. “The committee also disapproved of Le Guen’s desire to come to the job with two assistants which will make Nigerian coaches redundant. “The committee further resolved that any candidate that will be recommended by the Technical and Development Sub-Committee must have accepted to be handed targets and must also be willing to live in Nigeria. “In addition, such a candidate must agree to undergo other internal evaluation,’’ the communiqué said. The communiqué said that Yusuf would combine his Super Eagles job with that of the CHAN Eagles, while Imama Amakapabo would serve as Assistant Coach and Alloy Agu as Goalkeepers’ Trainer. It also approved the recommendation of the Technical and Development Sub-Committee for Bitrus Bewarang to replace late Coach Shaibu Amodu as the new National Technical Director (NTD). It further approved the recommendation for Nduka Ugbade to return to the U-17 national team as Assistant Coach and mandated all sub-committees to henceforth submit reports of their activities to NFF Board through the general-secretary. The communiqué said: “Executive committee approved that henceforth, only the head coaches of the various national teams will be on monthly salary, while assistant coaches will receive only bonuses and allowances. “The assistant coaches presently in the NFF’s employ have been given till the end of this year to secure substantive employment elsewhere as the federation deals squarely with its financial constraints’’. Eunice Elisha, the Abuja preacher who was murdered over a week ago while conducting morning preaching, will be buried on July 23, her family has said. Mrs. Elisha, 42, was murdered in the early hours of Saturday, July 9, in Kubwa, a suburb of Abuja. Her sister, Bola Fatuashi, said the burial activities will start with a wake keeping at 5:pm on Friday, July 22, at the New Life Assembly Parish, Redeemed Christian Church of God, Kubwa. She said lying-in-state will begin at 8: am on Saturday also in Kubwa. Mrs. Elisha is survived by her aged parents, six siblings, her husband and seven children. Mrs. Fatuashi had told PREMIUM TIMES that due to their aged father’s state of health, they could not relay the news to him. “We have not told my father, but my mother already knows. My mother is stronger than my aged father. We will all meet at the village, after every thing, then find a way to relay the news to him, in such manner as to prevent another tragedy,” she had said. The police say they have arrested six suspects in connection to the murder. The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, has announced the cancellation of the interview test for National Common Entrance Examination (NCCE) into Federal Government colleges. A statement issued by the Federal Ministry of Education on Monday in Abuja said the cancellation of the test for NCCE would take effect from the 2017/2018 academic year. The statement signed by the Deputy Director, Press, Bem Goong, said the minister could not establish the rationale for a second test for NCCE organised by the National Examination Council (NECO). “The second test is an unnecessary additional financial burden on parents/guardians,” it quoted Mr. Adamu as saying. “The era of multiple examinations attracting prohibitive fees cannot be accommodated by the Buhari administration, especially against the backdrop of government’s determination to increase access to education as a platform for breaking the cycle of poverty.’’ The statement said Mr. Adamu had directed NECO to strengthen its examination processes with a view to achieving quality and credible examination for admission into unity schools at the first test. It said the minister argued that multiple examinations did not necessarily translate to the admission of quality pupils in secondary schools. The statement said Mr. Adamu maintained that the 2016/2017 academic year remained the effective date for the ban on Post-UTME, advising vice-chancellors to adhere strictly to the policy in the overriding public interest.
