Mostly it just happens spontaneously and has nothing to do with stress, and to just about everyone - except you. Bertrand Russell claimed he had 100 false awakenings in a row and couldn't find a way to distinguish from real weakening. See below

Well some people have multiple false awakenings and nothing has so far worked to let them know they haven't woken up for real - maybe you should go and teach them how you always know you are dreaming since ONLY you seem to have this ability

No, going by general consensus you'd seem the one with a problem. As you can see from the below, false awakenings are universal while frequent lucid dreams are indeed very rare and usually last few seconds or minute before you lose the lucidity and again think it's real life.

I don't know what my brain can distinguish, all I can tell are my own experiences. Sometimes I actually wake up, wash up, hurriedly get ready for work, then wake up again, not knowing it was all a dream. You ever experienced such?
