PoliticsRe: Can You Convince Me That Buhari Has Improved The Economy Since 2015? by freshest4live: 6:52am On Jul 21, 2017
jiangchu:
thanks you have a nice point.

can you give factual evidence like cost of an item (like milk tissue papers or rice) 2015 and now. and a good source to verify.
Cost of items cannot improve overnight with the price of oil dropping from (152 to 54) dollars. Given that oil has been our major export/Government revenue and we saved little for the rainy day. In comparison to other developing countries, even Ghana and Botswana, Nigerians also pay little tax.
Now there is a slow but gradual process of saving our oil proceeds to make us more dependent on Agriculture and mining which has contributed more than oil to GDP, especially Agriculture.

Buhari at least has raised that consciousness in Nigerians that corruption is a very big problem and must be fought by those in Government.
Yes there are concerns that it's just about witch hunting and many complaints of hippocracy, but subtly he has raised in our consciousness the need to see corruption as something to be investigated in the political class.

Thank you, and we have many projects going on at thesame time across the country. It's not like Nigeria is stagnant either. Infrastructural development was slow during military rule with some little developments in the seventies and early eighties, Obasanjo in eight years(1999-2007) should have done better in that aspect at least in his eight year rule, (because we had the second largest external reserve in Africa, only behind Algeria then) but things have been changing since 2011 even with the opportunities missed under Jonathan.
l am a critic of Nigeria myself when l have to be, but some of these guys just argue emotionally. Nigeria is not doing well in many aspects but that 80% arguement is stale already.

Thank god we have a competent and proactive foreign affairs ministry. Left to Osinbajo alone nothing would have happened , even this is the barest minimum. The presidency should have made it a priority in FEC and resolve on a course of action.
What other course of action should they take? You said he should have called the ambassador, that guy showed he has done that already, now you are diverting. He has called for an investigation and the details are still not very clear. What else do you want? To threaten Cameroon with war even without evidence of the killings? Ayam not understanding oh.

Obasanjo actually fought hard for that thing, the international court rather ruled in favour of Cameroon. It would be unfair to blame obasanjo or read tribalism again into this.

No we have tried enough but north refuses to allow Nigeria to reform so that they system can be fair and just. They control the house and the senate. They control the presidency and military. So how do you think we can make that work in Nigeria.

Do you think we will be talking about Biafra today if these things were able to be done in Nigeria?
Igbo's are not the only ones facing this problem, it is national complaint even in the North. This is why we Deltans are also to be blamed, for accepting mediocrity from lbori to Uduaghan and now Okowa. There have been very few visionary Governors in the history of Nigeria.
But is the balkinization of this entity the antidote to our problem? Maybe, Maybe not.

What about the no vote campaign that is going on In Anambra state right now? Is it not what we are trying to do? You elect Okeke, he achieves what can be described as mediocre at best, you kick him out and elect Okafor, same result, Okonkwo comes and does the very same thing, then come Okorie, he even does worse than his predecessors, how can you be doing the same thing again and again and expect a different result each time? Is that not insanity? I don't want to elect another theif.
But in Biafra, you would still elect Ekene, Chuckwudi, and Amadi, what would you do then? Wouldn't you protest against them and hold them accountable? Or would the name Biafra change everything?

Even if Nigeria is restructured, the same politicians like Amaevhi, Ngige, Fashola and the absentee Bubu will still be the ones ruling, so what's the difference?
They will still be stealing the public funds, and restructuring won't change their minds.
They steal the public funds because there is no accountability. Bring the Government closer to the people via restructuring with policies that allow for accountability, that is the clamour. They steal freely because of lack of accountability, and all the we do is complain, doing nothing. They distract us with this ethnicity jargon, religon and lack of unity. It seems we don't know our right.

I hope you're not talking about Lekki that doubles as a river and a lake every year or neighbourhoods in Abuja with mansions and huge heaps of trash by the side when you're comparing to oil camps with full electricity, running water, and sanitation.

There are over a billion Chinese first of all, secondly Chinese or any other east Asians are not represented among boat people in the Mediterranean like Nigerians are. And at least you know Nigerians are so desperate that they feel that they need to push drugs abroad and commit other crimes, while folks from other sides of the country either strap bombs to themselves at command or try their luck with severed human heads.

I'm sure east Asian countries have no help from their culture and long history of education and hard work ethic, right? Keep telling yourself that.
People who are making it in Nigeria even from poverty have no business traveling out to go push drugs, others in Nigeria just like the Chinese, travel to the west to get quality education. To grow, the world depends on western education and that is why the Asian tigers travel to the West for education more than you find in the reverse.

Let me teach you though i don't know if your adolescent brain can comprehend what I'm saying. In International relations the one of the strongest tool a country can wield is Sanctions. Nigeria can find a way to hurt Cameroun through sanctions and also use its clout as phantom Giant Of Africa to force Cameroun to take responsibility for those killings and prosecute the Killers and also paying heavy compensation.

War is not fought among countries today because a nation can be crippled without firing a single shot
If Nigeria does that Cameroon would cry to Frances again, when Cameroonian soilders killed some Nigerian soilders occupying Bakassi in 2006, Nigeria retaliated by penetrating 15km deep from the air and it was deadly, and so they had to cry to Frances then. Nigeria has no real power to impose sanctions on her own as well.
Nigeria can however present it before the international court, although they revealed today that they found the report false.

From their report now, the Cameroonians threatened the Nigerians over payment of tax, and out of fear many fled to Nigeria, and it seems some drowned(report not totally clear). However according to them, the 97 figure seem to be a sum total of Nigerians killed by Cameroonians in the Bakassi peninsula since 2008.

You say Nigerians shouldn't be proud of individual success of her citizens that abound and has contributed to a large middle class of about 50 million because of a so called 80% poverty rate, but this is fallacious considering the fact that 95% of those successful Nigerian Entrepreneurs and tech guys are from the south. Now let's compare the poverty statistics in the south where the myriad of these individual achievers come from...

You find that both the SS, SE and SW have a poverty rate of just (19-25)%. By contrast, the North East and North west each have a poverty rate of about 80%. The Northerners are talented but radical wahabbist Islam has hindered many.
The southerners are proud of themselves but they know they have to do much more, 80% poverty or not.

Some Nigerians mix up their arguements, they believe if they admit something about us which could be slightly positive in a myriad of problems, then it's tantamount to being totally satisfied with the way Nigeria is at the moment, so they accuse you of misplaced patriotism.
But despite her problems and the statistics that put 70% under the poverty line, it is a fact that Nigerians everywhere are also making it big time, with a rising and strong middle class, even though this has little to do with the Government, it is also a fact that those who clamour for white rule or a return to the colonial days argue from ignorance and emotion.

You're ahead of them in a stagnant state, only giving the illusion of progress through averaged data and unreliable statistics. Funnily enough, you've been very quick to mention how the other Asian states were helped by the United States, but there's no elongated discussion about Vietnams history here and how the US is known to have isolated them for years.

The nominal per capita for Viet is 2,553.987 projected for 2017, and 2,741.226 for 2018, that is how fast they are growing. They have set their sights firmly on developed status, by 2020 Nigeria will be officially behind them (Nigeria is already behind them). In 2016 they grew by over 6% while Nigeria lagged at 1.6%.

They have huge growth in tourism, while people actively avoid Nigeria, even those that travel to Africa regularly.

First of all, Nigeria completely relies on oil, while Vietnam has a more diversified economy. The average life expectancy of a Nig is 52 years and for Viet it's around 75. Vietnam still has issues, but it's an investment magnet that's being eyed by everyone, the political climate is sturdy, and there aren't a whole bunch of IDP camps and mumus blowing themselves up all over the place, etc.

You are right, Vietnam is way better today and has made steady progress after the war though still not there yet.
One thing we must consider though is that Nigeria for a large part of her history after independence has been under military rule following a series of coups and political instability till 1999, and obasanjo also did little in terms of infrastructure. The military made some positive improvements though but not enough compared to what they looted and the years of stagnancy.
Nigeria is on the path of great change, the problem now is the internal crises and the structure that allows such high corruption, and old school/clueless men to lead her in this age. The biggest problem however in my opinion is the dependence on oil for revenue (considering that oil only makes up 10% of Nigeria's GDP), as well as her lack of unity along religious and ethnic lines.
Notwithstanding l would not deny that Nigeria is on the path of great progress punching below her weight slowly.

Togo? The GDP per capita of Togo is $590 per annum. Nigeria's is $2,700. This is average earning per person. Togo has a population of 7.5 million. Nigeria 200 million. It makes far better economic sense for a Biafran industrialist to establish his car plant in NIGERIA and export to Togo, if they'll accept his cars, rather than sinking funds in Togo with little room for expansion, low patronage, and low profits.

And all this is assuming that France allows Togo to allow you become competition for their Peugeot and other cars already there. You'll be shocked at the power a single phone call from Paris or London can have on some of these small African states.
It's true, the eleven west african states colonized by Frances have their economies controlled by them to a large extent. It's annoying.
