Now that I’m almost a 500L dental student with clinical experience I can now contribute to this Thread

A dentist is not just a medical doctor, he is a medical doctor and a dental surgeon

I’m currently doing my surgery posting in plastic surgery and the junior resident in my unit is a dental surgeon, same time I did my medicine 1 posting in cardiology our JR were two BDS doctors and 3 doctors from family medicine, one of our dental student(my classmate) had palpitation he saw a HR in his unit to write him a referral to the cardiologist, lo and behold our senior who just matched in OMFS(A junior resident) was the doctor on call, yes he is a JR currently in cardiology, he examined this guy and prescribed him medication

Man goes for JR ward rounds and treat burns and ulcers(the JR reg in my unit who is a dentist going into residency for omf)

Make una just Dey play

Its studies Chemistry as it related to life. That's why it's BIOchemistry not CHEMObiology.

Please any medical student that got medicine and surgery through crossing from 100level to 200level in unizik or any other tertiary institution (federal or state) should please indicate so as to clarify me on its process, procedures and criteria required.
Does it require connection or should i say is it possible to switch via strong connection.

It depends on the school like UNN money is everything there so far you can buy 1 big AC and 1 Gen for the faculty or if you have your 500k your GP Doesn’t matter

The goal post shifted to money and prestige grin

You are calling yourself medical doctor for fame and sheer pride, not money. Dentists in Nigeria gain alot from tagging along with medical doctors. From Conmess payment, to becoming head of MDCN and hospitals, to receiving the same salary in housemanship despite doing less calls etc.

Outside housemanship it a different thing. Many cling on to residency, and government for dear life. Those who find themselve in PP, and not able to bag a government job know how the thing goes grin

All the best

I've been there and done that quite a while back, it's a whole gush of knowledge at a go and I can see why it leaves some undergraduates with a gush of "god complex".

Nigeria is unregulated. In a sane clime, a Dentist claiming to be a medical Doctor and that he can then treat cases based on student rotations can land you a suspension. Probity and uprightness is the first virtue that health care professionals should uphold, we should be able to tell patients and their relatives who we are, our precise roles, and the scope of the care that we can render, without seeming to confuse them or display ambiguity. If you then hold on to the fact that you are a Medical Doctor, even when your certificate and license says otherwise, you could lose your license, as you will be deemed to lack insight to your fault. This happens in all other western countries where Nigerians are trooping to ATM.

For the historical record. A dermatologist has to have studied Medicine and surgery to proceed to training in dermatology. A Dentist cannot do dermatology, no matter how many medical rotations he had, but would have to remain within the specialties that Dentistry offers e.g OMS, community dentistry, etc, this is because your course does not give you the carrying power to study the medical specialties, only MBBS does. Same way MBBS does not give Doctors the carrying power to study Dental specialties.

In the end there nothing intrinsically special about MBBS, BDS etc, it's all human science and we'll all drop these titles when our day is done. What makes it special is immersing ourselves thoroughly in what we do, and giving the most we can to society through the work of our hands.

All the best for your future, and I hope you find clarity in the path that you've chosen.

A man attended Dental school and came out as a dentist, yet he rather live a lie on nairaland claiming medical school experience, rather than Dental school experience.

The biggest problem I see with the average black man is the craze for titles and position.

Medicine is not as rewarding as it used to be a Decade ago. Most Medical doctors cannot afford to rent an apartment in Ikoyi or in an affluent neighborhood, yet charlatans who studied allied health profession like Dentistry, optometrists keep pretending to be medical doctors, rather than accepting to be Dental Surgeons or optometrists as the case may be.

This post could have served its purpose to inspire aspiring dentist, but it ended up highlighting the gross inferiority of allied health professionals, and the typical pride that has eroded the Nigerian health system.

All the best champ.

I’m 400L dental student currently doing my medicine and surgery shirt posting which I will complete in 500L after writing my Pharm and path exam

Omo a DENTIST is a Medical doctor and more...! They complete medicine and surgery, inshort what makes you a doctor is what you are able to cover what you are a able to read and the sacrifice you make towards covering different systems of the human body the more systems you cover the more you know, so if I’m able to join many ward rounds and know more about many cases and read about them I would be a good doctor...! Medical doctor is not just a term, it’s base on experience you have gotten okkay...?

Further more Dentist complete medicine and surgery in 500L And only study dentistry for 1 year which is final year, why will a dental surgeon treat you when their are many Mbbs doctors on call..? He would be probably be busy doing oral surgeries,That doesn’t mean he can’t treat you during an emergency okkay..?I just pray God gives me the strength to cover most systems and be able to diagnose and treat patients around me that present with different cases from different systems, that’s the Magic and Joy in It and not just a mere term I’m a Doctor and you cannot different between a patient who have COPD from a patient who have ASTHMA

in summary a BDS graduate is a medical doctor, a MBBS graduate is also a medical doctor, is just that the MBBS graduate will be busy going over and over again on those systems why a BDS doctor will be busy doing oral surgeries and surgeries in head and neck(a dentist is already a specialist)...

It’s just like saying a Dermatologist is not a doctor Because at some point doctors specialize and are free to forget other systems and focus on a system, dermatology can be regarded as systems same way head and neck or mouth can be regarded as a system that doesn’t mean these specialized doctors don’t know the general medicine and surgery

Congrats....pls if u don't mind kindly tell how u were able to prepare for ur second MB bcs it's a combo of yr2 n 3 work and under a short period of time.
Thanks[/quote]

Passing 2nd MB Entails alot of Skill which I will be mentioning the most important ones These are

1)SPEED
2)ACCURACY
3)SMARTNESS

SPEED:I don’t really know about the school you are studying at but if it is one of these schools in the eastern part of Nigeria like UNEC(my school) ESUT UNIZIK your speed in covering materials And big textbooks in the aforementioned schools cannot be overemphasized imagine studying BDS/MBBS in a school that follows the general school calendar not minding if you are a medical student or not a school that finishes two sessions in a year you need speed to overcome this how do you do this yes of course by reading everyday that is the only way out reading and covering reasonable amount of topics per day

ACCURACY:You need to be accurate not just covering a lot, accuracy for me is understanding what you are reading cause you need this knowledge for a very long time imagine you study something you will write the exam In the next 18 months and you are cramming it,that’s the beginning of failure cause, cramming here is just like you are wasting your time you are not an engineering or accounting student that just need a short time memory you need this knowledge for a very long period of time, understanding is key so you can BUILD ON RESIDUAL KNOWLEDGE, Incase if they set that question and you didn’t really get time to revise ,atleast you have an idea and you can talk small about it

SMARTNESS:My brother nobody can finish the whole of GUYTON, you need to be smart, for example read what is in your syllabus for your school first before reading other things like in my school now, they normally do not treat anatomy of the BACK REGION,imagine you are reading BACK REGION,when you haven’t really mastered HEAD AND NECK REGION,omo smartness cannot be over emphasized, if he choke my brother select important topics jack am for exam(You must have read all and you can’t recall all) try as much as possible to be smart you can’t know it all, Even Ben Carson no know everything about the human brain,be smart attend tough lecturers fixed class, How H.O.D of PHYSIO go fix class 3 days to MB and you Dey your lodge Dey jack GUYTON,watin you know say you Dey jack, be smart attend those dying minute class fixed by big lecturers

Finally if you’re a Christian/ Islam always pray, me I no sabi pray oo, but I Dey always call my mum to pray for me...!

All the BEST DOCTOR!!!

Mr. Man you came late to the party. This matter has already been discussed extensively and also eminent and respectful members of this thread had already called for calm and cessation of further arguments. You would have seen all these if you had patiently and with all honesty, incoperating your God given cognitive awareness, read through the transcript of our discussion thoroughly.

Besides I would have truly engage you constructively and with all sense of objectivity, but I can see your rude manner of approach, throwing vile and mannerless invectives coupled with insults, which actually depicts your kind of person and level of decorum. I would save my precious energy in engaging you intellectually because it will lead to futility and waste of time.

Advice: It would have been great if you had shown courtesy because this is one of the hallmark characteristic of a good doctor trained in an healthy and sane environment. I bet you wouldn't want to be rude to your patients and senior colleagues because it will spell doom and disaster to your nascent medical career.

I would rather you cure yourself from this obvious delusion. I would rather say that you're not good enough to lay claim of admission in UI, ABU, UNILAG,UNN, OAU, and UNIBEN, that's why you ran from UNN. Besides you were not even given admission in UNN irrespective of its Skewed admission process to study medicine.

If I were you I will humble myself and make do with what is available (which is obvious) and add value to myself to complement the deficit of medical education in EBSU, instead of having a self imposed myopic reasonings that all medical school have same standard and quality.

It's only those who wholly and really cherish in being in one of the first generation medical schools and was denied of a long childhood dream will be concocting such shameful invectives to console him or herself ( it's obvious you occupy an executive position in such group of people).

Stay humble, read wide, add value, and pray to have opportunities that will expose you to respectable medical cases, clinical exposure, infrastructure and opportunities in a high class medical institutions ( which should be the goal of any sensible and ambitious medical student irrespective of where he or she is trained).

UI is not in any way better than EBSU the only advantage we have as medical students in federal schools is that we pay less, all the med school in Nigeria are piece of shitttttts

I'm very sure this user is an ASPIRANT lol

Mr. Mandeyy I will still reiterate again and again, that this your comment of EBSU better than UI is one of the most senseless and biased comments I have seen in this forum in 2021. And the funniest part of it is that some set of people liked that your fallacious and misleading comment. You can as well conclude that the whole of EBSU as a University is better than UI. UI medical school is a template and reference for any medical school in Nigeria and West Africa. And top 5 best in Africa. I won't be susprise if you don't know that the bedrock of UI is CoMUI and UCH Ibadan.

You can't even compare EBSU and LASU. Which indices do you want to use to rate EBSU more than UI. Is it in research, quality of research papers and articles published, infrastructure, teaching, clinical exposure, innovation, international outlook, quality of medical graduate, mode of admission, medical school curriculum ( which is a template for other schools), teaching hospital ( best in West Africa), quality and exposure of staff ( very recently 8 staff members in Biochemistry, psychiatry, Obstetrics and gynecology and medicine are rated in top 2% best scientists in the world by researchers from Stanford University) etc., name it.

By computing the average rankings of 2021 and 2022 UI medical school is among top 250 in the world according to times higher education ranking ( the most reliable University ranking platform in the world). By implication this means that it is better than 80% of medical schools in UK and US. An average UI medical school graduate is ahead of an average graduate from other schools (Most Nigerian doctors making waves and input in UK and US are graduate of UI).

LASU medical school should not even be in the same sentence with that of EBSU, talk more of one of the most Prestigious medical school in Africa. Does EBSU even have a proper teaching hospital? Are they not still using one of the Federal Medical Centres in Ebonyi state? Please, next time restrain yourself from making such outrageous, blatant and blasphemous comment. If this was to be an argument in theology, your comments will be classified as blasphemy.

I'm very sure if you were offered admission to UI medical school, you will ditch that of EBSU with immediate alacrity. For the fact that UNN has a skewed admission process, doesn't give you the leeway to generalize. And please I do await a constructive argument from you.
