Overcrowded Abuja Schools Where Pupils Learn On Bare Floor - Deborah Tolu-Kolawole Pupils of LEA Primary School, Lugbe ‘B’ Zone 9 in Abuja sitting on bare floor while learning under leaking roofs on Wednesday {Photos}. DEBORAH TOLU-KOLAWOLE writes on the poor learning conditions at the Local Education Authority School in Zone 9, Lugbe, Abuja, where primary school pupils close at 12pm to make room for secondary pupils to resume. For the pupils at the Local Education Authority School in Zone 9, Lugbe, Abuja, the future indeed holds little or no hope and promises of a better life. This is largely because the institution of learning has become the epitome of rot and neglect. Despite being located in the largest area council in Abuja (Abuja Municipal Area Council), the school has little to show in terms of infrastructure for its contribution to human capital development. The school, which is under the control of the Abuja Municipal Area Council, is designed to cater to pupils in the primary and post-primary school levels; however, puplis are left without desks to receive lessons, a lack of adequate teachers, and other basic amenities. When our correspondent, who disguised as a worker of an international non-governmental organisation, visited the school, it was learnt that for many years, the area council had not provided the school with enough desks and chairs for pupils, just as staff were seen standing with no chairs to sit. It was also observed that while the government did not provide the school with enough teachers, the management staff had to source for teachers who were being paid with contributions by the Parent-Teacher-Association. It was observed that in some of the classes, there were no fewer than 80 pupils! Speaking with our correspondent, a staffer who did not want to be named for fear of sanctions said, “The situation here is not palatable at all. I have been working here for close to three years. Pupils don’t have enough chairs, and the infrastructure is terrible. We operate a primary and secondary school here. When the pupils in the primary classes close by 12pm, the ones in secondary school, LEA Secondary School, resume in the afternoon, and that is how we rotate. The toilet is nothing to write home about. We don’t have enough teachers. Most of the time, we depend on the money received from the PTA to run the affairs of the school because we don’t get anything else. The new administrator who was recently posted here has been trying. She resumed here in January, but she has been trying her best.” According to the Director of Programmes at Reform Education Nigeria, Ayodamola Oluwatoyin, “There’s more to a student’s academic success than just being taught; the environment in which they learn has a major impact on their progression.” Moving around the classes, our correspondent observed that some of the floors of the classrooms were cracked, thus making it difficult for pupils to sit on them as chairs are almost nonexistent in the school. The few available ones are shared by pupils who, according to a teacher, come to school early. “Some of them just come to school because they have a passion for learning. The situation here is not palatable. Even as a teacher, I am discouraged. Some of our colleagues here were not employed by the area council, but because we needed teachers, the school had to employ them and pay them from PTA funds. I can even take you to see the toilet situation; we’ve written letters to the early education department and gone to the area council all to no avail,” another teacher who spoke on the condition of anonymity told our correspondent. Leaky Roofs: Beyond the lack of tables and chairs for learning, our correspondent also observed that some of the classes had leaky roofs, which may pose challenges to learning during the rainy season. While expressing disappointment in how much the school has decayed, another teacher urged the government to quickly come to the aid of the people and renovate the school, saying that it was the only hope for the people in the area. “The government needs to help; this school is the only accessible school for children from this area. It’s disappointing that this is happening. Some of them don’t have the opportunity to go to better schools; this is all they have, and we need the help of NGOs and the government,” he said. While a library is expected to house collections of books, periodicals, and sometimes recordings for people to read, borrow, or refer to, the one at LEA Zone 9 is a mere carcass, accommodating only a few outdated books. Apart from not having a functional library, students at the school also do not have the luxury of a computer laboratory. The closest thing they have seen to a computer is inside a textbook. While having a conversation with our correspondent, some of the pupils joked about how they had been equipped with the textbook theory of how a computer works but had never operated one in reality. “We don’t have computers in our school; our teachers teach us from textbooks, and we write the examination based on what we have been taught,” a primary school pupil simply identified as Ruqayah said. During the visit, our correspondent was privileged to meet with a parent who simply identified himself as Mallam Muhammad. Speaking to our correspondent, the parent who expressed sadness at the poor state of the school said, “I have five children, two in the primary section and three in the secondary section. The way they operate is like this. The primary pupils close by 12pm while the secondary pupils resume in the afternoon. I did not have a choice, and that is the reason why I brought my children here. When you move around, you will see how things are arranged. The classrooms and even the toilets are bad. They don’t have drinking water, and some children have to sit on the floor. The government needs to attend to this. The children are our future; it doesn’t make any sense for our children not to have good access to education. While we were growing up, things were not like this. We need well-wishers to please intervene.” Expert calls on govt: Speaking with our correspondent, the Director of Programme, Reform Education, Ayodamola Oluwatoyin, urged the government to awaken to its responsibility. “Basic education is not something to be joked with. It is a very important stage in anyone’s life. It is unfair that the government at all levels has totally abandoned education. I’m sure that when you move around the states, you will witness the same issues. I am sure you will even see schools where there are no classrooms. While CSOs and philanthropists have important roles to play, the government bears the majority of the responsibility,” Oluwatoyin said. All efforts to get the chairman of AMAC through his media aide, Kingsley Madak proved abortive as he had yet to respond to inquiries by our correspondent as of the time of filing this report. https://saharareporters.com/2023/01/25/pupils-nigerias-capital-abuja-sit-bare-floor-classroom

New Nationwide Poll Puts Peter Obi Ahead Of Atiku, Tinubu; Runoff Likely In 2023 Presidential Election Another new face-to-face nationwide poll on the 2023 general elections has put the Labour Party Presidential candidate, Peter Obi, ahead with 37% of the survey respondents. Obi is followed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Atiku Abubakar, who secured 27% of the survey responses, while the All Progressive Congress (APC) candidate, Bola Tinubu, secured 24% with New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) candidate securing at 6% of survey respondents. This disclosure is contained in a press statement by Nextier, an African-focused consulting firm, where it presented the second presidential poll conducted it conducted, on Friday, January 27, 2023, 4 weeks before the scheduled presidential elections. The Nextier team used a sample size of 3,000 respondents and generated a margin of error of 2% at a 95% confidence interval. The survey sample represented the age and gender demographics in Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. Although Labour Party secured the highest voter preference, it is unlikely to secure an outright first-round victory. None of the presidential candidates met both criteria for victory in the first round: a majority of votes cast and 25% in two-thirds of the states. Runoff election likely despite Labour party lead: The survey results show that Labour Party can achieve 25% of the votes in 23 states, meaning that the presidential election could head to a runoff between Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar or Bola Tinubu. Most registered voters (72%) have decided on their preferred party. This result is consistent across rural and urban voters. Similarly, the survey data demonstrates that respondents are certain in their choices. The survey showed that 83% of the respondents indicated that nothing would make them change their preferred party before the election. It is important to note that the survey questionnaire showed the party logos and names instead of the candidates’ names or images. Significantly higher voter turnout expected in 2023 presidential election: Nextier in its report from the survey noted that voter turnout in the 2023 presidential election could be significantly higher than in 2019. For instance, 77% of respondents indicated that they ‘will vote in this election, while 63% stated that they “will definitely vote.” This level of commitment was consistent across all age and gender demographics in rural and urban communities. Despite the voter commitment, turnout could be depressed by a combination of factors, which include insecurity, concerns about the freedom and fairness of the election, and concerns about the impartiality of Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC). Only 52% of the respondents trust that the elections will be free and fair. Only 47% of respondents trust that INEC will not manipulate the results. 2023 election to be the most keenly contested in decades: The founding partner of Nextier, Patrick O. Okigbo stated that the 2023 presidential election is shaping to be one of the most keenly contested races in recent decades. He said, ‘’It is exciting to see Nigerians take their civic responsibilities seriously.’’ He confirmed that, in addition to the two national polls, Nextier would continue to provide data analysis and insights on Nigeria’s selections and other development issues. In summary, although the Labour Party secured the highest voter preference, Nigeria’s 2023 presidential elections will likely go into a second-round runoff with Peter Obi and one of either Atiku Abubakar or Bola Tinubu. For The Record: This is the second poll that Nextier is conducted in recent times for the 2023 presidential elections. Recall that in November 2022, Nextier had in an opinion poll it conducted, tipped Peter Obi to be the winner of the 2023 election if it was held then. Conducted in rural communities, the survey interviewed 2,000 Nigerian registered voters in 12 states across the six geopolitical zones. The Nextier survey team said they excluded the home states of the leading presidential and vice-presidential candidates. The poll suggests a 3-horse presidential race between Mr. Obi, Bola Tinubu of the APC, and Atiku Abubakar of the PDP. Though with a strong support base in Nigeria’s north-west, particularly his Kano home state, Rabiu Kwankwaso of the NNPP is not considered a top contender, according to the survey. The poll results show that Mr. Obi leads in rural communities at 40.37%. Mr. Abubakar is at a distant second with 26.7%, closely followed by Tinubu at 20.47%. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://nairametrics.com/2023/02/05/a-new-nationwide-poll-puts-peter-obi-ahead-of-atiku-tinubu-and-runoff-likely-in-2023-presidential-election/%3Famp%3D1&ved=2ahUKEwjI49Os0ID9AhUNRKQEHXyrC4YQ0PADKAB6BAgHEAE&usg=AOvVaw2R7v-g3sE677D0-gwXd6i2

2023 Election: Again, Peter Obi Outclasses Tinubu, Atiku in New Nationwide Polls Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party has once again established his popularity ahead of the 2023 polls. In the latest opinion poll released by Nextier SPD, Obi out-pointed his counterparts with a wide margin at polls. He led the polls with 37 per cent and was closely followed by Atiku Abubakar who was able to rack up 27 per cent. Elsewhere, the presidential flagbearer of the ruling party APC, Bola Ahmed Tinubu settled for 24 per cent. The presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi has once again eclipsed his counterpart, Bola Tinubu of the APC and Atiku Abubakar of the PDP in the latest election poll organised by Nextier SPD, an African-based international development consulting firm. According to a tweet sighted by Legit.ng on the official page of the Labour Party on Sunday, February 5, Obi racked up a total of 37 per cent on the poll and was closely followed by the PDP with 27 per cent and the APC with 24 per cent. Peter Obi has been dominant in most of the online surveys organised in the build-up to the presidential polls. This latest development means Obi is highly favoured to win the presidential polls 20 days away from today despite being labelled as the underdog of the presidential polls. Nextier SPD released its first poll in November 2022 and the Labour Party’s presidential candidate emerged as the most preferred. Labour Party react to Obi's dominance at online poll... In reaction to this development, the Peter Obi presidential campaign organisation in a statement said: “It is wonderful to note that the findings of Nextier’s second poll for the 2023 General Elections suggest that the message of hope of our Presidential Candidate, Mr Peter Obi, is resonating strongly with the Nigerian people. “It demonstrates that the efforts of Nigerians from across the nation to take back their country and reshape its character and fortune to benefit all Nigerians are bearing fruit. “We are delighted that His Excellency, Mr Peter Obi, who is seen as the burden bearer and hope for true change in Nigeria has the greatest net favorability rating among the leading presidential contenders." With less than three weeks to the presidential polls, Peter Obi will have a difficult hurdle to contend with as he will be doing battle with political juggernauts like Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar. However, many political pundits have tipped Obi to become the next presidential candidate if the voter turnout is massive as predicted by electoral experts. Peter Obi leads Atiku, Tinubu in latest online poll ahead of 2023 elections. Meanwhile, Peter Obi, Labour Party presidential candidate has won another independent research poll ahead of the 2023 elections. Obi, a former governor of Anambra state, came out tops in the latest poll conducted by Nigerians Decide. The Labour Party presidential candidate has the backing of millions of Nigerian youths ahead of the election. https://www.legit.ng/politics/1518346-2023-election-peter-obi-outclasses-tinubu-atiku-nationwide-polls/

Gunmen kill Nigerian judge during court session The police have confirmed the incident. Gunmen have killed the President of Ejemekwuru Customary Court in the Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State, South-east Nigeria. The judge, Nnaemeka Ugboma, was shot dead by gunmen who arrived on a motorcycle while he was presiding over a court session, according to a report by the Punch. The attack brought the court session to an end as lawyers, court staff and litigants fled the scene. “They (gunmen) came into the court, dragged him out and shot him dead and drove off. His corpse was there as people in court fled,” an unnamed source was quoted as saying. The Chairperson of the Owerri Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association, Ugochukwu Allinor, has confirmed the killing of Mr Ugboma, according to the paper. Mr Allinor said the branch would disclose what action it would take on the incident. When contacted, the police spokesperson in Imo State, Henry Okoye, confirmed the incident to PREMIUM TIMES. Mr Okoye, an assistant superintendent of police, said the police had begun an investigation to track down the suspects. The police spokesperson said calm had returned in the area and that police have also intensified patrol to forestall breakdown of law and order. Worsening insecurity: Like other states in Nigeria’s South-east, security has deteriorated in Imo State with frequent attacks by armed persons. The attacks often target security agencies, government officials and facilities. The latest attack occurred less than two weeks after gunmen beheaded the sole administrator of Ideato North Local Government Area of the state. About two weeks ago, a police officer was killed by gunmen who attacked Oguta Divisional Police Headquarters in Oguta Local Government Area of the state. Gunmen, suspected to be members of the outlawed Indigenous people of Biafra (IPOB), on 18 January, attacked Agwa Vigilante Group in Agwa Community in the same Oguta Council Area of the state. Three suspected members of the IPOB were killed by police operatives who foiled the attack. The Nigerian government has accused the IPOB of being responsible for the deadly attacks in the region. But the group has repeatedly denied any involvement in the attacks. IPOB is a group leading agitation for an independent state of Biafra which it wants carved out from the South-east and some parts of the South-south Nigeria. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/regional/ssouth-east/579666-gunmen-kill-nigerian-judge-during-court-session.html

“It was necessary” Ini Edo replies Mike Bamiloye, other critics of nudity in Shanty Town (video) Ini Edo, an actress and mother who was involved in the production of the much-talked-about Shanty Town Movie, has finally responded to critics of the Nollywood series’ loud nudity. This comes after Evangelist Mike Bamiloye, the founder of Mount Zion Ministries, took aim at Nigerian celebrities, particularly actors and actresses who promote nudity, romance, and other social vices in their films. Responding to critics in a chat with BBC Pidgin, Ini Edo, who played ‘Inem’ in Shanty Town, explained that the movie couldn’t be shot without nude scenes because the story is about crime and prostitution. According to her, it would be impossible to convey the movie’s message without including a sex scene. Ini Edo went on to say that Shanty Town is a story about crime and prostitution, and such a story cannot be told without displaying nudity. The actor stated that going naked was not done to degrade anyone, but rather to make the film appear more realistic. The veteran actor also chastised the overemphasis placed on a woman’s body, urging people to see a woman’s body as a simple creation of God, devoid of strange reasonings. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://www.ghanamma.com/ng/2023/01/27/it-was-necessary-ini-edo-replies-mike-bamiloye-other-critics-of-nudity-in-shanty-town/&ved=2ahUKEwiqkrfH5fb8AhW37rsIHcZGBJEQFnoECAcQAQ&usg=AOvVaw1wF8kymZXHfKEc2LNBn5S1

Why Do Some People Feel A Kind When They Hear Or See 69? Or, isn't it just a number like others anymore? I carefully observe that some people feel overtly uncomfortable with it, particularly now-a-days. How is it that quite a great deal of folks spontaneously find the number suggestive?

Naira Redesign: The Senate has become the spokesperson of the poor because it affects them - Singer Paul Okoye Singer, Paul Okoye aka Rudeboy has tackled the Nigerian Senate for calling for the extension of the deadline of the swapping of the redesigned Naira notes. Worried by the scarcity of the newly redesigned notes to common Nigerians, the Senate recently called for the extention of the deadline for the swapping of the Naira notes to June 2023. In a post shared on his Instagram page this morning, Paul stated that the lawmakers are now speaking up because this particular policy affects them and the election. He went on to ask where the lawmakers were when palliatives were hidden during the pandemic. He added that God is "helping Nigerians avoid vote buying." Comments expressed here do not reflect the opinions of lindaikejisblog.com or any employee thereof. Anonymous: "Which vote buying? The naira is scarce cos politicians have swapped and hoarded dem all till elections. Una no go see money till after elections. Tinubu and co had all bank managers in his pocket." Anonymous: "When I saw the idiot in the name of senate president hitting the gavel I to the extension of the deadline, I know for sure that it's really biting them and I asked myself why is he in disagreement with his paymaster over this one? Very hopeless and selfish lots." Mikolo: "I want the senate to immediately intervain in this lingering fuel crisis that have made things really hard for the common man. Is it because it dose not affect them as their salaries and allowance must be pain completely. Have you ever seen a senator queuing up for fuel or is it because there friends own this filling stations and their drivers drive into the filling station at the other of the manager of the filling station. The sanate president and speaker of the house have never invited the minister of petroleum to come and explain what is happing that nigerians can not buy fuel at will with the own money since last year February, wow i forgot the minister is their oga. Methodist Church Enthrones First Female Bishop In Nigeria The Methodist Church Nigeria, on Sunday, enthroned Rt Rev. Nkechi Nwosu as the first female bishop of the Church in the country. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Nwosu was enthroned by His Grace, Most Rev Dr Joseph Nnonah, Archbishop of Kaduna at the Christ Methodist Cathedral, Jos. The new bishop in a brief interaction with newsmen revealed that “God is using what has happened in the Methodist Church, Nigeria to tell the whole world that the time to release women to fulfill their destiny has come. She said that women and men needed to join hands to achieve the mandate of God. “God knew that by creating only Adam, He will not be able to bring his heart’s desire, so He had to make the woman to complement him. “So, for the word of God to reach the end of the world, “man must put their hands together to serve God”, irrespective of gender because God is a spirit. “He is not a flesh, the flesh we are seeing is just for our comfort, as He said that everybody who believes in Him and is led by the spirit of God is the son of God. “And so every child of God who is born again and dwell in the Holy Spirit is a son of God. “And when men or women of God in charge of denominations understand this, I believe we will conquer more for the Lord than what we have done,” she said. On the 2023 general elections, Nwosu called on Nigerians to listen to the voice of God who knows the best leader for the country at this moment. She said that God gave Nigerians conscience and power and that the power is in the Permanent Voters Card (PVC). “We must all go out there and agree with God, listen to the spirit of God, and do what God said we should do. “Do that so that God will use us and anybody He wants to put on that seat to restore Nigeria to a place of pride in Africa, and the world,” she added. His Eminence, Dr Samuel Uche, Prelate Emeritus, Methodist Church Nigeria, during whose tenure Nwosu was elected bishop, said that God made all humans equal. Uche said that Jesus Christ elevated the position of women by being born of a woman. “So I believe there is no difference between a man and woman, after all, in Hebrew language, a man is a he man and a woman is she man, so we are all men. “And moreover, in Methodist Church, we taught that people who have reached menopause, who are no longer childbearing can hold responsible office in the church, because they have the capacity. “They have the ability, they are meticulous, resourceful, and spiritual. “So we decided that we should have in Methodist Bishop a woman and I know that some time ago, the President of the British Church was a woman from Ireland,” he said. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Nwosu will serve as Bishop of Jos Diocese. (NAN) https://www.vanguardngr.com/2023/01/methodist-church-enthrones-first-female-bishop-in-nigeria/amp/

Unlike Tinubu, Peter Obi Did Not Stick To The Script, He Was Witty, Charming And Intelligent - Cookson During an interview with the Arise television news correspondent known as John Cookson, he stated that PeterGregory Obi’s speech seems different from Bola Tinubu’s own during his appearance in the Chatham House in December because he did not follow his script. Speaking further, the journalist, however, affirmed that the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party seems witty, charming, and sounded very intelligent. In conclusion, he added that the promises he made to the Nigerian people are fantastic, and as such one can not help but wish him well however his worry is how Peter Obi is going to get the resources given the current inflation rate. In his words… “The room was so full of Obidients and you could imagine that he was talking to a happy house. It was such a difference from the Bola Tinubu press conference appearance back in the Chatham House back in December. This guy, first of all, stood up, holding his speech, he didn’t stick to the script, he was witty, charming, and sounded intelligent. Some of the things he promised the Nigerian people are fantastic. One wishes him well but as I ask him where is the money going to come from due to the inflation rate”. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://ng.opera.news/ng/en/entertainment/amp/43986d4dcac52aa2bc00573d2a464b54&ved=2ahUKEwjwzpGjo8_8AhVWXaQEHfrrCCQQFnoECBIQAQ&usg=AOvVaw1Rmr1Z8Cl-w4E-e5W0hvZQ

‘I will withdraw from presidential race if my running mate is found to be corrupt,’ Obi declares at Chatham The Labour Party, Peter Obi, said on Monday he would withdraw from the 2023 presidential race if his running mate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, is found to be corrupt. Obi , who stated this while answering questions at the Chatham House in London, argued that Baba-Ahmed never compromised his position when he was a member of the National Assembly. He said: “We will fight corruption, Datti has the record of being the only National Assembly member who refused to buy property of the government when it was offered to all members. You can go and look at his record, if you find anywhere he puts himself in a transactional position that he has compromised his position, I will stop running. “I have governed a state for eight years, go and check the record, I have challenged everybody, I am the only governor, till today whom the day I left office I was not owing salaries or pension or gratuity or any contractor or any supplier and I left money in three banks in Nigeria which I say every day, Access Bank of Nigeria, Fidelity bank of Nigeria and Diamond bank of Nigeria! “Nations of our size have done it. How did India with 1.4 billion people cover the issue of health, how did Indonesia cover that? If other nations have done it well, we have to learn from them, there is nothing wrong in learning from them if you do not know how to do it. “Let me assure you what we have been campaigning on, in our campaign we have heard them say, we do not have structure. That is the structure we are trying to destroy, the structure of criminality, that Nigeria has been held captive. The structure that has impoverished Nigeria, it will not be there, we will dismantle it! “We are going to turn around the power sector. Nigeria generates about 60,000 megawatts of electricity for 200 million people. South Africa is the second biggest in terms of economy, 60,000 million people generate about 50,000MW, and South Africa in the last two to three years has declared a state of emergency in power, and said anybody can generate about 100MW without a license.” https://www.ripplesnigeria.com/i-will-withdraw-from-presidential-race-if-my-running-mate-is-found-to-be-corrupt-obi-declares-at-chatham/?amp
