Six Dead, 81 Wounded In Instabul Explosion Frightened shoppers in the street when the explosion went off. At least six people have been killed and 81 wounded in an explosion in a busy area of central Istanbul, Turkish authorities have said. The blast happened at about 16:20 local time (13:20 GMT) on a shopping street in the Taksim Square area, the Turkish city’s governor Ali Yerlikaya said. Vice-President Fuat Oktay said the blast was thought to be a terrorist attack carried out by a woman. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the perpetrators would be punished. BBC correspondent Orla Guerin, who is in the area, said there was a heavy police presence around Istiklal Street, which had been cordoned off. Helicopters were circling overhead as ambulances went back and forth. Many shopkeepers standing in their doorways on the normally bustling street looked stunned, she said, adding that the incident will have come as a shock to many in the city. Eyewitness Cemal Denizci was about 50m (54 yards) away when he heard the explosion. “I saw three or four people on the ground,” he told AFP. “People were running in panic… There was black smoke. The noise was so strong, almost deafening,” he said. The street – usually packed with shoppers – was previously targeted by a suicide bomber in 2016. A Staunch Peter Obi's Supporter Takes Campaign to Another Level, Organises Classes for Students in Kaduna Since Peter Obi announced his plan to contest for the 2023 presidency under the platform of the Labour Party, his supporters have continued to strategise and re-strategise their campaign activities ahead of the election. From organising street rallies for the sensitisation of voters to community activities like cleaning the roads and drainages, Obi's supporters popularly known as Obidients have continued to up their games. A recent of such community activities is the launch of extramural classes organised by Muhammad Yahya, a political analyst, youth mobilizer, software developer and advocate for good governance. According to Yahya, parents and guardians resident in the Rigasa area of Kaduna state can enrol their children on extramural classes for free. Also, Peter Obi, Yusuf Baba Datti-Ahmed and Labour Party-branded notebooks are handed to every participating child for free at the classes. His words: "For extramural classes organized for PO. Enrol your child for free OBIDATTI tutorial classes. Free notebooks are available." In a chat with Legit.ng reporter, Yahya said every Kaduna child between the ages of 16 years old and above can attend the classes. He said the initiative was borne out of the need to canvass votes for Peter Obi and his running mate Datti through free tutorial classes for Kaduna state school children preparing for different secondary examinations. He added that he believes the classes will in turn enable Nigerians living in both the rural and urban communities of Kaduna state to seize the opportunity to prepare for their senior secondary school examinations. His words: "The reason behind the classes is to canvass for ObiDatti via free tutorial classes that will enable both people from rural and urban communities to attend the classes which are solely preparing them for WAEC, NECO and JAMB. It also gives basic foundations to freshers. We equally distribute writing materials to them." It does not just stop at academics: Yahya further noted that aside from academic classes in the Rigasa community in Kaduna state, his team provides counselling platforms for all children. He said: "Above all, we do counsel them on good governance and the commitment of PO in regards to unity of Nigerians and quality/affordable education." Qualification of teachers participating in the initiative: Yahya who seems not to be taking chances with compromised quality education said that all teachers participating in the project are qualified. He also stated that these teachers are all volunteering with the purpose of achieving the same aim which is sensitising the community on the need to vote for the right candidate in the forthcoming 2023 election. He added: "We have qualified teachers but they aren’t paid. They are just volunteering." Nigerians react to Yahya love for children's education: In his reaction, a Twitter user, @Catalyst444_, volunteered to join the team of teachers at the ObiDatti extramural classes for kids. Another user, Tobe (@tochimadu), also said that he would like to volunteer as a teacher at the classes in Rigasa while others said they have never seen Nigerians take governance to heart like Yahya is currently doing. https://www.legit.ng/politics/1503590-2023-staunch-peter-obis-supporter-takes-campaign-level-organises-classes-kids-kaduna/

Why ‘No Work, No Pay’ Doctrine Is Not Applicable To ASUU Members – Falana Foremost constitutional lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN has insisted that ‘no work, no pay’ doctrine is not applicable to members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU. Falana made this assertion in an interview on Channels TV’s Politics (Today) on Tuesday. He said, “By virtue of Section 43 of the Trade Dispute Act, during strikes, workers are not suppose to be paid. But the law has to be interpreted having regards to the facts and circumstances of every strike. “In this particular instances, the period of eight months of the strike of ASUU is being factored into the amendment of the calendars of all the public universities in a way that the lectures that the students missed are being covered now. “The students are going to write their examinations at the end of the day. It’s very crystal clear that the 2021-2022 academic session has not been canceled. In otherwords, the lecturers are working. The lecturers are trying to cover the period that was lost. So, the doctrine of no work no pay is inapplicable,” Falana said. Recall that Falana had earlier asked President Muhammadu Buhari to direct that members of ASUU be paid their full salaries after they were paid half salary for October. The union had on October 14 called off its eight-month strike. But, head of press and public relations, Olajide Oshundun, federal ministry of labour and employment, said ASUU members were paid their October salary pro-rata and not half salary as reported. According to Oshundun, pro-rata was done because the union could not be paid for work not done. Reacting to the development, Falana, who is also ASUU legal representative, said the position of the federal government on the matter is “factually faulty and legally misleading”. He argued that since Buhari overruled the no-work-no-pay principle invoked on members of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), it is logical to do the same for ASUU. Falana asked the president to ignore the advice of Chris Ngige, minister of labour, and pay ASUU members their full salaries from February to October. ‘The position of the federal government is factually faulty and legally misleading,” he said. “Since the industrial action was called off, the public universities have adjusted their calendars to ensure that the 2021/2022 academic session is not cancelled. Consequently, students are currently taking lectures or writing examinations that were disrupted during the strike of the ASUU. “Therefore, having regard to the facts and circumstances of the ASUU strike the doctrine of ‘no work, no pay’ is totally inapplicable as students who were not taught during the strike are currently attending lectures and writing examinations. “Furthermore, it is public knowledge that the members of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) embarked on a strike that lasted two months last year. The federal government dragged the striking doctors to the national industrial court which ordered the NARD to call off the strike. As soon as the strike was called off, President Muhammadu Buhari jettisoned the ‘no work, no pay’ principle and ordered the payment of the salaries for the two months that the strike lasted. “On that occasion, the President overruled Dr. Ngige in the interest of industrial harmony in the health sector. “In the same vein, the ASUU recently called off its 8-month old strike in compliance with the order of the national industrial court and the court of appeal. We are therefore compelled to call on President Buhari should ignore the advice of Dr. Ngige and direct the public universities to pay the full salary of each lecturer from February to October 2022.” The senior lawyer said if the government fails to pay, it would be accused of engaging in the selective application of the “no work, no pay” principle which is discriminatory and illegal. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2022/11/why-no-work-no-pay-doctrine-is-not-applicable-to-ASUU-members-falana/amp/

PDP crisis: ‘'To Hell With Atiku!'’, Ortom Fumes The Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, late hours of Sunday called the bluff of the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, saying, “to hell with Atiku”. The governor made the statement when he hosted his colleagues from Rivers, Oyo, Abia and Enugu States to a dinner party held at the government house, Makurdi. The four governors, Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State, Seyi Makinde of Oyo and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, had arrived in Makurdi on Sunday for the official flag-off of the PDP governorship and parliamentary campaign scheduled for Monday. They are expected to inaugurate some projects in the state before the campaign. Ortom said he would not support Atiku’s presidential bid to continue the killing of Benue people. The governor lamented the killing of 18 persons in his council area last Friday where a young man in his 20s had his eyes removed to send a message to him. He said, “To hell with Atiku and anyone supporting him! They should go and tell him! You want me to be slave for a Fulani. It’s better I die! Anybody supporting Atiku is an enemy of Benue! “My people are being killed and you want me to be quiet? “My tenure ends in May and you can do whatever you want if you think you have the powers. I have written my will. When I gave it to my wife, she cried all night. If I die at 62, many of my mates have gone long time ago and If I die today, I’m a fulfilled person but let it be recorded that I died resisting the invasion and killing of my people. “I will never support a Fulani man to become president. If there is another person who is ready to work with me and ensure the security of my people, I will work with him,” Ortom said. The governor appreciated God for journey mercies granted to his colleagues from their various destinations to Benue State and described them as true friends of Benue people. He said Wike held a title as the Eagle of Tiv land, noting that when he, Ortom, was attacked, Wike was the first person who roared, saying that kill Ortom and you have killed the whole Nigeria. “He did not keep quiet when Benue was under siege, he visited with stakeholders from Rivers State and committed N250 million and subsequently he has committed over N700 million to Benue IDPs.” Ortom condemned some Benue sons, particularly those at the National Assembly, who, according to him, are keeping mute over the killings going on in the state, saying, “From tomorrow, I’m turning my venom on the National Assembly members from the state who are romancing with Buhari to kill the Benue people.” He stated that as the state launches the campaign, it is his belief that the PDP will win the 2023 elections. “As we trust in him, 2023, if the elections will hold, we are good to go and by the grace of God we will win. Benue is PDP and PDP is Benue State,” he said. He warned those who may have planned to come to Benue to rig elections to shelve such plans because, “If you come here to rig any election, we are not going to accept it.” Speaking on behalf of the G-5 governors, Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, said they were out to save the country from the present condition of total collapse. “The G-5 are the integrity governors and anyone can challenge us. We have come to give Governor Samuel Ortom solidarity support for the flag-off of campaigns in Benue and to tell Benue people that we are with Governor Ortom. Like us or hate us, we are with Ortom. You cannot break us. We are bonded together. “Leadership is risk-taking. Whether you like him or not, Ortom has shown leadership,” and he called on the people to support him all the way. He further reiterated his call on the National Chairman of the PDP, Dr Iyorchia Ayu, to respect agreements that he would resign if the presidential candidate of the party came from the north. When contacted, spokesman for the Atiku/Okowa Presidential Campaign Organisation, Kola Ologbondiyan, promised to get back to our correspondent as soon as possible. “I will react soon. I am quite busy now but I will definitely get back to you on that,” he pledged. https://punchng.com/pdp-crisis-to-hell-with-atiku-ortom-fumes/?amp

Group Of Hackers Steals $11m From Nigeria, Others A group of hackers, OPERA1ER, has stolen about $11m from companies in Nigeria, Benin, Cameroon, 11 other African countries, and Argentina. This is in line with a latest report from Group-IB, a cybersecurity firm, entitled, “OPERA1ER: Playing God without permission,” in collaboration with the researchers from Orange CERT Coordination Center. The firm said that digital forensic artifacts analysed by it and Orange followed more than 30 successful intrusions of the gang between 2018 and 2022. The company’s data disclosed that companies in Ivory Coast were the most targeted. It stated that while the estimate of what the hackers stole is pegged at $11m, it could have actually stolen as high as $30m. It stated, “The report takes a deep dive into financially motivated attacks of the prolific French-speaking threat actor, codenamed OPERA1ER. “Despite relying solely on known ‘off-the-shelf’ tools, the gang managed to carry out more than 30 successful attacks against banks, financial services, and telecommunication companies mainly located in Africa between 2018 and 2022. OPERA1ER is confirmed to have stolen at least $11m, according to Group-IB’s estimates. “One of OPERA1ER’s attacks involved a vast network of 400 mule accounts for fraudulent money withdrawals. Researchers from the Group-IB European Threat Intelligence Unit identified and reached out to 16 affected organizations so they could mitigate the threat and prevent further attacks by OPERA1ER.” According to the firm, the report was completed in 2021 when the threat actor was active. Head of cyber threat research at Group-IB Europe, Rustam Mirkasymov, said, “Detailed analysis of the gang’s recent attacks revealed an interesting pattern in their modus operandi: OPERA1ER conducts attacks mainly during the weekends or public holidays. “It correlates with the fact that they spend from 3 to 12 months from the initial access to money theft. It was established that the French-speaking hacker group could operate from Africa. The exact number of the gang members is unknown.” https://www.vanguardngr.com/2022/11/group-of-hackers-steals-11m-from-nigeria-others/amp/

Adeboye Decries Naira Depreciation, Knocks FG Over Redesign The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church Of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has knocked the Federal Government over its decision to redesign the naira. Adeboye said this during the church’s November Holy Ghost Service with the theme, ‘Let It Rain’ on Friday night. In his sermon, the octogenarian decried the diminishing purchasing powers of the naira. He wondered that the FG was planning to redesign the naira when people are hungry and looking for money. He said, “Do you know what is going on in our country? It doesn’t make sense anymore. Our Naira now, it is not even worth the paper it is printed on. “And while people are hungry, trying to find enough money to buy bread to eat, our bosses are thinking of making the Naira more beautiful.” The Central Bank Of Nigeria late October announced plans to redesign the N200, N500, and N1,000 banknotes. The apex bank stated that the new notes will come into circulation on December 15, 2022, while existing Naira notes will remain legal tender until January 2023. https://punchng.com/adeboye-decries-naira-depreciation-knocks-fg-over-redesign/?amp

Trump Hints At Contesting, Returning To White House In 2024 Former President of the United States, Donald Trump has hinted that he may contest for the office of the president in 2024 and stage a comeback to the White House. Trump disclosed this where a crowd gathered in Iowa on Thursday while speaking at the first of four rallies in five days in his campaigns for Republican candidates in next week’s midterm elections. The former Republican President has been subpoenaed by the January 6th Committee for not calling to order his alleged mob of supporters over the invasion of the Capitol Building on January 6, 2021, when he lost to President Joe Biden in the 2020 elections. He reiterated his baseless claim that he lost in 2020 because of widespread election fraud, as per Reuters. “I ran twice,” he said. “I won twice and did much better the second time than I did the first, getting millions more votes in 2020 than I got in 2016. “And likewise, getting more votes than any sitting president in the history of our country by far. “And now in order to make our country successful, and safe and glorious, I will very, very, very probably do it again. Very soon. Get ready,” Trump said to the cheering crowd. Reports revealed that Trump won the most votes ever – 72 million – for a sitting president in 2020, but still lost to his challenger then and now president, Biden, a Democrat, who polled 81 million. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2022/11/trump-hints-at-contesting-returning-to-white-house-in-2024/amp/

Tinubu Shuns IPOB, Fixes Campaigns In Anambra, Imo For Mondays The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Bola Tinubu has fixed his campaign rallies in Anambra State and Imo State on Mondays. The APC and Tinubu’s decision to hold their presidential campaigns on Mondays contradicts the sit-at-home order by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in the Southeast region. The timetable released by the Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) shows that Mr Tinubu will hold a campaign rally and a stakeholders’ engagement in Imo State on Monday, 21 November. On Monday, 30 January, the campaign train will move to Anambra, the home state of Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate. Recall IPOB declared the sit-at-home order in August 2021 to protest and demand the release of their leader Nnamdi Kanu, who is standing trial on treason and terrorism charges by the Nigerian government. Violators of the sit-at-home order have been victims of violence and killings by gunmen in southeast states on Mondays. Vehicular movements and commercial activities are on halt in compliance with IPOB’s order. In early October, IPOB said it has no plans to disrupt the 2023 election and accused the government of masterminding insecurity in the Southeast zone. Days later, an appeal court acquitted Kanu of all charges against him but the government said it will “consider all available options open to us on the judgment.” IPOB has since approached the Supreme Court challenging the October 28, 2022, decision of the Court of Appeal, which granted a stay of execution of its order discharging and acquitting him. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2022/11/tinubu-shuns-ipob-fixes-campaigns-in-anambra-imo-on-mondays/amp/

2023 Election: 18 Arrested With PVCs In Oyo Operatives of the Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS, Oyo State Command, have apprehended a total of eighteen migrants found with the Permanent Voters Cards, PVC, planning to participate in the 2023 elections in the state. The Comptroller, NIS, Oyo State Command, Comptroller Issa Dansuleiman, gave the disclosure, while briefing newsmen yesterday in his office at Agodi, Ibadan, in line with the Federal Government’s resolve to prevent migrants from participating in the 2023 general elections in the country. According to him, the command in the state swung into action across the length and breadth of the state, which culminated into the apprehension of eighteen migrants found with the voter’s cards. He noted that the said migrants have violated the law of the land, adding that they were repatriated to their countries of origin. Buhari’s Government Goes After Peter Obi, Blocks Bank Account Of Support Group In what appears to be a premeditated clamp down on groups supporting the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi, and his running mate, Dr Yusuf Datti, the federal government of Nigeria has blocked the Keystone bank account of Take Back Naija: a socio-political movement supporting the presidential bid of the former governor. Though, at the time of filing this report, no excuse has been given for the sanction but the spokesman of Take Back Naija, Danjuma Garba Musa in a statement, described the action as an act of political persecution, suppression and intimidation from the powers that be. Garba while noting that Peter Obi and Yusu Datti are the most credible and competent candidates in the 2023 election, added that it is the constitutional right of the group to support any candidate of their choice. He however, stated that the latest action by the government will not stop the group from supporting Peter Obi and his running mate, Dr Yusuf Datti in 2023 election. Part of the statement reads, “TBN Global has been notified that it’s bank account with Keystone bank has been unjustifiably blocked by a government order. We see this development as an act of political persecution, suppression and intimidation from the powers that be to stop the youth driven grassroots movement from carrying out activities protected by the constitution. “TBN is a socio-political movement and a non-governmental organization made up of well meaning patriotic Nigerians, actively engaged in promoting good governance and democratic ideals in Nigeria. It is our core value support competent and credible candidates during elections leveraging the energy of youths who will determine electoral outcomes at all levels irrespective of the political party. Against the 2023 general elections, TBN Global Leadership had endorsed Mr Peter Obi and his running mate Dr Yusuf Datti Baba Ahmed of the Labour Party as the most credible and competent candidates. “TBN has publicly solicited and equally received donations for the sole purpose of funding grassroots activities to support the Obi-Datti presidential campaign activities. We categorically state that blocking our account or any manner of repression will in no way stop us from supporting the Obi-Datti 2023 mandate. “It is our constitutional right as citizens of Nigeria to support and promote the candidate(s) of our choice. Therefore, we appeal to the relevant authorities to reconsider this sanctions. “We also urge members of the public especially our donors to bear with us while we seek redress to unlock our account.” https://edujandon.com/2022/11/buharis-govt-goes-after-peter-obi-blocks-bank-account-of-support-group.html/

Peter Obi Speaks On Affinity With Five Aggrieved PDP Governors The presidential candidate of the Labour party, Peter Obi on Tuesday explained the connection between himself and some aggrieved governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He made the disclosure while speaking in Makurdi during a visit to Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom. Obi said the only deal he has with the PDP governors is on the common interest in making Nigeria a better country. “The only deal I have with them is that they are passionate about Nigeria,” Obi said. He criticised the All Progressive Congress for displaying a lack of leadership during the current crisis. Mr Obi praised Mr Ortom for confronting insecurity challenges in Benue state at personal risk and comfort. Ortom, on his part, advised Mr Obi to negotiate power with other leading presidential candidates with a commitment to serve the people. The Governor said if he was not a member of the PDP, he would have been working for the Labour party candidate. Some of the aggrieved PDP governors include Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, Seyi Makinde of Oyo, Okezie Ikepeazu of Abia state, and Mr Ortom. Recall the aforesaid governors have called for the PDP National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu to step down for a southerner based on a previous commitment. Some believe the aggrieved PDP Governors may support Mr Obi in the 2023 presidential elections. Abuja Businessman's Family Have Raised N3m Ransom, But Kidnappers Are No Longer Reachable The kidnappers who demanded N10 million for the release of Abrahams Isaac Adigun, an accounting software firm owner abducted a week ago en route to Abuja from Lagos, have been unreachable for days although his family have raised N3 million of the said sum. FIJ learnt that Adigun, who owns Small Business Development Solution (SBDS), was kidnapped on Saturday, October 22, between Oyo and Kogi states. The kidnappers contacted the family on Sunday to demand a N100 million ransom, but they reduced it to N10 million after negotiations. Although they gave the family a deadline of Thursday for payment, they have been mute since Wednesday. It was also learnt that the kidnappers told the family to bring the ransom to Ojo bridge in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State. FIJ gathered that the abductee had earlier informed his family about the trip, but around 7 pm on Saturday, the family could no longer reach him on the phone. Speaking with FIJ, Emmanuel Adigun, the victim’s brother, said Abrahams shuffles between Lagos and Abuja but primarily resides in the latter. “He told us he was leaving Lagos for Abuja, but at about 7 pm, the number stopped connecting. We tried reaching him all to no avail,” he said. “On Sunday, we received a call that he had been abducted. They called my sister’s husband and later agreed to speak with only my father. Those are the two people they are contacting. During the course of the negotiation, we were made to know he entered a car with one other passenger and the driver drove them to his present predicament. “The kidnappers started from N100 million. We begged them, they insisted on N10 million and they gave us till Thursday, but they have stopped calling since Wednesday. We are hoping he’s fine. So far we have raised N3 million. “When my brother’s number was tracked, it was last seen on Kogi road. But the kidnappers asked us to bring the ransom to Ojo bridge in Ibadan. I guess the incident happened between Ibadan and Kogi. “The number of the kidnappers has been off since Wednesday. They only flashed once on Thursday. I just pray my brother is alive; he’s the family’s breadwinner.” When FIJ contacted Adewale Osifeso, spokesperson of the Oyo State Police Command, he said the case was currently being investigated. https://fij.ng/article/abuja-businessmans-family-have-raised-n3m-ransom-but-kidnappers-are-no-longer-reachable/
