INEC Sets Up Situation Room, Collation Centre Ahead of the 2023 general election, the Independent National Electoral Commission has established a National Situation Room and Collation Centre where the results of the presidential election will be collated. According to the Commission, the International Conference Centre in the Federal Capital Territory will serve as the venue for the exercise. This was contained in a statement signed by the National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, on Thursday. The statement read, “The Commission held its regular weekly meeting today, Thursday, January 5, 2023 and deliberated on several issues, including the venue for the National Situation Room and Collation Centre for the 2023 General Election. “As the general election approaches, the Commission establishes a National Situation Room and Collation Centre where the results of presidential elections are collated. Once again, the International Conference Centre in Abuja will serve as the venue for this important exercise. “Accordingly, the Commission has established two committees for this purpose. First is the Collation Secretariat, where presidential results from the states will be collated. This will be headed by the Chairman of the Commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, in exercising his constitutional responsibilities as the Chief Electoral Commissioner of the Federation and Returning Officer for the presidential election. In addition, a few technical staff will assist him. “The second is the Situation Room and Collation Centre Committee, which shall be responsible for the preparation of the venue, seating arrangement, utilities and services, security, the accreditation of party agents, as well as the national and international observers, media, etc. The Committee has the following membership: 1. Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, National Commissioner – Chairperson 2. Prof. Abdullahi Abdu Zuru, National Commissioner – Member 3. Barr. Festus Okoye, National Commissioner – Member 4. Director, Electoral Operations – Member 5. Director, ICT – Member 6. Director, Planning and Monitoring – Member 7. Director, Security – Member 8. Director, Election & Party Monitoring – Member 9. Gunmen Kidnap Hotel Owner In Oyo An hotel owner at Omoloju in the Iseyin area of Oyo State, Mr. Dejo Ajuwon, has been kidnapped by gunmen on his farm at ‘Serafu’ village along Moniya-Iseyin road. According to security sources in an interview with Vanguard on Thursday evening, the case was the second of such at the Serafu village in the last month as a friend to a farm owner close to the village was also abducted in early December last year and the sum of two million naira ransom was paid before his release. Mr Ajuwon was said to have relocated to Iseyin, his hometown, after his retirement from active service to establish his farming and hospitality businesses for almost a decade. Worried about the spate of kidnap incidents at the ‘Serafu’ village and the farm settlements there, residents in Iseyin have challenged the police and other military authorities to comb the village and settlements around the area to get more intelligence reports about the operations and possibly make arrests. As of the time of filing this report, there has been no communication from the kidnappers to know their demands. Boxing Day tragedy: How fun seekers drowned in Lagos beach Pandemonium broke out on Monday, at Baracuda Beach, Abraham Adesanya, Ajah area of Lagos State when two yet-to-be-identified fun seekers drowned while trying to rescue another person from being swept away by the high current. The victims were part of fun seekers and beachgoers who thronged the beach for the Boxing Day Celebration in Lagos, after Christmas Day the previous day. Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed the sad incident. As of the time of filing this report, 11.30 am, Tuesday, the bodies of the victims were yet to be recovered. According to Oke-Osanyintolu: “The Agency responded to distress calls concerning an incident at the above location, (Baracuda Beach, Abraham Adesanya, Ajah). “On arrival at the scene of the incident, it was reported that two beachgoers had drowned. “Further investigation gathered revealed that two adult males died during a failed rescue attempt of a third adult male. “The lifeguard stationed at the beach reported that the victims had ventured beyond the red line. The police officer that was responsible for the shooting was later identified as ASP Ayuba, who was attached to the Ajiwe Police Station in Ajah. It was also revealed that Mrs Bolanle was pregnant at the time she was shot, after she tried for many years. In a recent tweet shared by popular Nigerian skit maker and activist, Adebowale Adebayo, who is well known as Mr Macaroni, he identified that the late Bolanle was killed by a police officer attached to the Ajiwe division and that another police officer from the same division killed someone 2 weeks ago. According to the tweet, Mr Macaroni said: “A Nigerian police officer from Ajiwe Division shot and killed Bolanle Raheem on Xmas day. It is from this same division an Officer killed Gafaru Buraimoh about 2 weeks ago. This barbarism by the Nigerian Police must come to an end. After May 29, I’ll Be Far Away From Abuja To Avoid Problems — Buhari President Muhammadu Buhari on Christmas Day said he will retire to his Daura hometown, Katsina State to rest from the rigours of office and to avoid problems, when he exits from office on May 29, 2023. President Buhari stated this while hosting residents of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, who paid him Christmas homage at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. Speaking at the homage, the President said, “Thank you very much for taking your time to come and visit me and I congratulate you on this great day (Christmas). I have promised a lot of my colleagues that I will try and be as far away as possible from Abuja when I leave the office so that nobody can create any problems for me anymore. “I will be in Daura, which is on the border with the Niger Republic and I think in spite of technology, I will be safe enough there.” He expressed his appreciation to Nigerians for trusting, supporting and giving him the opportunity to serve as their leader. He told the delegation, led by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mohammed Bello that while campaigning for President in 2003, he took his time to visit the 774 Local Government Areas of the country and he got overwhelming support from the people. He used the occasion to once again assure Nigerians that he will not stay in office a day longer that the stipulated time of his tenure in office. “I thank God that before the 2019 elections I went around the whole of the States and in 2003-2011, I went to all the Local Governments in this country and I thank Nigerians, the people who turned up in every Local Government were more than what anyone can buy. So, I was pleased with the way Nigerians highly treated me and accepted me. In five months’ time, I will happily retire according to the provisions of the constitution of the country and go back home,” he added. Speaking earlier, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, and leader of the delegation, Mallam Mohammed Bello, said it has become mandatory for a delegation of residents of the seat of power to pay homage to the President during festivities like Christmas and Sallah because he is the Governor General of the FCT. He said, “It is not surprising to pay such visits because constitutionally, as the Governor General of the FCT, you are also the head of the administration of the FCT but you have graciously delegated that to me. Today marks a milestone for us because in 2020 and 2021 we could not pay such visits due to the emergence of coronavirus.” He wished President Buhari long life and a successful retirement as his tenure gradually comes to an end. According to him, “This also presents the last Christmas that we are going to have an opportunity as residents of the FCT to come and pay you homage because in five months’ time, your tenure would have ended and the next Christmas will be under a new President. “So, we use this opportunity to thank God almighty for having made it possible for us to witness several Christmas celebrations under your leadership. I wish to also on behalf of the entire residents of the FCT, wish you well and pray for God almighty to grant you long life, and a useful and healthy retirement in the next few months. We want to also extend our appreciation for what you have so far done for the country.” President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, who was represented by the Vice President of the Association, Rev Stephen Panya-Baba, thanked God for sustaining Nigeria’s unity, as he praised President Buhari for working hard for the progress of Nigeria. “We want to reassure you that in the twilight of your administration, the Christian community is fully in support of you and praying that God will bless your effort and that this desire you have to see that the sufferings of the citizens of this nation are alleviated, will begin to yield fruits. “We are not unaware of the challenges that you continue to face especially security challenges which have become a very persistent problem in our nation today we are praying and we have not given up hope and we want to encourage you to continue doing your best and we believe God will one day intervene and do what man cannot do.” He also prayed for successful and peaceful general elections across the country next year. 2023: It is not easy working with Aisha – Peter Obi cries out Peter Obi, the presidential flag-bearer of the Labour Party for the 2023 election, on Wednesday said that it is not easy working with persons like socio-political Aisha Yesufu, because “instead of calling you ‘Your Excellency’, they will be arguing with you”. Obi said this during an interactive section with students in Calabar, Cross River State. Yesufu is an open supporter of the Labour Party candidate and has attended several campaigns with the former Anambra State governor since he kicked off his rally in October. “It is not easy working with people like Aisha, instead of calling you “Your Excellency” they will be arguing with you but that is what is needed in Nigeria,” Obi said.
