Politics › Re: NLC Begs Dangote To Donate Food To Osun Workers by funlord(m): 8:47am On Jun 13, 2015 |
luvmijeje: President, Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote President, Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote The Nigeria Labour Congress has appealed to wealthy Nigerians like Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Femi Otedola and others to come to the aid of the Osun State workers by donating food items to them because of the hardship they are going through.
The chairman of the NLC in the state, Mr. Jacob Adekomi, made the appeal in an interview with our correspondent in Osogbo on Friday.
Adekomi, who lauded the Christian Association of Nigeria for seeking food aid for the workers, added that it would be hypocritical to claim that they did not need help from outside at this time.
He said that the situation had become very bad among the workers because of the non-payment of the workers’ salaries for the past seven months.
Adekomi said, “The call by the CAN that people should donate food to workers is okay. That will somehow ameliorate the suffering of our people. It is welcome. There is nothing wrong with it.
“In fact, labour unions will soon go out to solicit help from well-meaning Nigerians like Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Mr. Femi Otedola and non-governmental organisations.
“We will reach out to them to give us food so that our members and their families will not die of hunger. We need help! Tell me, how much can a civil servant save that will last him for seven months? Our people are hungry and we need help.
“Ramadan is fast approaching. We need food so that our members who will observe the Ramadan will have something to break their fast. Many have been undergoing compulsory fasting, but at least when you fast, you have to break.”
Meanwhile, human rights activists, some workers and the Conference of Nigeria Political Parties staged a protest on Friday to express their displeasure over the unpaid salaries.
The protesters marched from Igbona area to Olaiya Junction in Osogbo where they addressed journalists.
The protest caused a traffic snarl, but the presence of policemen at the scene ensured orderliness.
Armed with placards with various inscriptions such as: “Pay workers and pensioners their entitlements,” and “Aregbesola, bring back our money,” the protesters said they had to use the June 12 Day to seek support for the workers who they described as oppressed.
The Chairman, Centre for Human Rights and Social Justice, Mr. Sulaiman Alimi, said Governor Rauf Aregbesola had failed the people of the state.
He said that blaming the past government for the financial crisis in the state was an act of irresponsibility on the part of the current administration.
Alimi called on the governor to resign, saying he should no longer continue in office since he could not find a solution to the problem.
He said, “I want to say it emphatically that Governor Rauf Aregbesola has failed the people of Osun State because he created this problem by mismanaging the allocation which accrued to the state. This is why he has not been able to pay workers for seven to eight months.”
“I am using this medium to advise Aregbesola to resign honourably from office before he will be sent out of the state. The governor has failed in his responsibility and the people can no longer bear the untold hardship any longer.”
In a related development, the Osun Civil Societies Coalition, which is an umbrella body of pressure groups in the state, has called on the government to devise means of paying the workers’ salaries.
Expressing its sympathy with the workers, the coalition said it would be cruel and ungodly to leave them in their despondent condition.
The coalition’s spokesperson, Mr. Ismaeel Uthman, said in a statement that hunger and poor health ravaging the state workers were undeniable as a result of the non-payment of their salaries.
Uthman said, “We sympathise with the workers in Osun state over their unpaid salaries; we acknowledged how difficult life has been for them because some of the members of the coalition are in the state civil service. We know life has not been easy at all. The statement read, “We dedicate this year June 12 to the Osun State workers. We specially call on the state governor, Alhaji Rauf Aregbesola, to find solution to the non-payment of the workers’ salaries in the state. A hungry man is an angry man and there is no appeal for someone that is hungry. Aregbesola should act fast before hunger leads to death.”
The governor had earlier denied the allegation of insensitivity and financial recklessness being levelled against him over the salary issue.
He had said, “This administration remains sensitive to the welfare of Osun State workers. The financial situation of the state that has made it difficult for the state government to pay the workers’ salaries is disheartening and painful.
“However, no one can establish a single instance of recklessness on the part of this government.
“Those who want to accuse Aregbesola of not thinking enough on how to generate more funds should also ask how his government was able to raise Internal Generation Revenue from N300m to N1.5bn in a spate of four years.

Politics › Re: Buhari Needs More Time To Appoint Cabinet - Ahmed Joda by funlord(m): 8:42am On Jun 13, 2015 |
makzeze: President Muhammadu Buhari deserves a little more time to appoint his cabinet members, the chairman of his transition committee, Alhaji Ahmed Joda, has said. Joda said this in an interview with State House journalists yesterday after submitting to Buhari, an 800-page report of the memoranda and presentations its committee received from across the country. He explained that transfer of power from one political party to another as recently witnessed Nigeria requires a long process. According to him, this is part of the evolution of democracy, and that Nigerians have to be a bit more patient as such evolution cannot be with immediate effect He noted that political appointment was entirely the president’s prerogative, saying Buhari would go through the committee’s report and understand its recommendation. On the insinuation that the submission of the report delayed political appointments, Joda said one of the terms of reference of his committee was to get the handover notes from former president Goodluck Jonathan, but that the committee did not receive it until weeks after its inauguration. “For about five weeks, we went through memorandum, listening to presentations from all over this country. Today (yesterday), we submitted about 800 pages of the report to Mr President. It’s now his property and I believe in due course, he’ll begin to act on it,” Joda said. “We received the handover note on the 25th of May and that report was about 18,000 pages and it took time to even sort them out and to make sense from them, read them, analyse them and come up with recommendations,” he added. “I think he (Buhari) deserves a little bit more time. This is not an ordinary transfer of government from one president to the other. In this country, we’ve never witnessed this kind of transition from one political party to another; the political party in opposition won the election,” the super federal permanent secretary stated. “Previous transitions from one president to the other did not require long process like this. I think this is part of the evolution of democracy. The country has to be a little bit more patient, it cannot be with immediate effect,” he said.

Politics › Re: Buhari Plans Military Shake-up, Angry With DSS by funlord(m): 8:25am On Jun 13, 2015 |
McDonalds2014: There are indications that President Muhammadu Buhari may carry out a major shake-up in the top echelons of the military. It was learnt that service chiefs and other senior officers across the various arms of the military might be relieved of their posts to pave way for new hands. Findings showed that Buhari would replace the service chiefs with equally experienced officers. It was gathered that all but one of the military chiefs would be disengaged by the President, while appointing new officers who would be expected to implement the new phase of the war against the Boko Haram sect in the North-East. Sources said that there was anxiety in the military over the looming change of guard which is expected to affect all the services, including the Army, Navy, and the Air Force. It was gathered that the military chiefs were acutely aware of the fate that might befall them, having reached the pinnacle of their career. A source said that the President may be considering one of the service chiefs to ensure smooth transition between the present military chiefs and their successors. But another source said this was not likely, noting that the only service chief that might be retained is the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase, who was appointed a few months ago by the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan. One of our correspondents gathered that Buhari would likely appoint his “loyalists” and those he had worked with into top positions. It was also gathered that Buhari might have made up his mind to use policemen and soldiers as presidential security, while whittling down the influence and presence of the Department of State Services at the Presidential Villa. It was also learnt that Buhari indicated his preference for policemen and soldiers trained in body guard protection instead of the usual teams of DSS personnel used by his predecessor. A source said that the President is unhappy with the agency over the “various negative security reports it wrote against him during his struggle to become the President, including the report on the recent certificate saga.” Security sources said the rejection of 253 DSS operatives by Villa authorities last week was informed by the President’s directive that he did not want the agency’s personnel around him. One of the sources said, “The President has yet to forgive the DSS for what he sees as its antagonism against him before the last general elections. So, the President has decided to keep the agency at arm’s length and for his security, he will be using policemen and soldiers.” The source added that though a DSS operative would still occupy the post of the Chief Security Officer of the villa, “the CSO will be a mere figure-head because he would have no control over the security at the villa.” Further findings showed that since Buhari was sworn in, information about his itinerary and schedules were no longer passed to the DSS as is the tradition under the former President. Our correspondents learnt that under the last administration, the CSO would always be informed about the President’s movement and daily itinerary, but this was said to have changed since Buhari assumed office. Presently, it was gathered, it is only the President’s Aide-de-Camp that knows Buhari’s daily schedule and the CSO had to rely on his contacts within the villa to know the President’s movement. When contacted, the DSS Deputy Director, Public Relations, Marilyn Ogar, had told one of our correspondents earlier in the week that she could not comment on the issue of posting of the service officers at the villa. “I don’t have such information and I cannot comment on it,” she said. Also, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Sheu, declined to comment on the issues of appointment. He said Buhari could not make any pronouncement on appointments or any other issue until he received the report of his transition committee. Shehu recalled that Jonathan submitted its handover note to Buhari on the eve of his (Jonathan) exit from office. He said the President thereafter handed over the note to a committee led by Ahmed Joda to study and make recommendations. He added, “The Joda committee was given two weeks to study Jonathan’s handover note and make recommendations. “This committee just finished its assignment on Wednesday evening and may present its recommendations to the President on Friday.”

Prions are unique pathogens in that they appear to have no nucleic acid and thereby differ from viruses, bacteria, fungi and other pathogens. Prions are resistant to procedures that break down nucleic acid and destroy biological forms of pathogens.
