Health / How Your Gut Is Connected To Your Mental Health by funmbat: 3:03pm On May 19
Hey, folks! Actually, I was going through a read very recently and I discovered that recent research has shown that when babies are given lots of antibiotics, especially without prescription, it can have long-term effects on their mental health as they grow up. This is information to note for our nursing mothers, not just for them but even for adults. You might be wondering what your gut has got to do with your brain. Follow me as I show, in simple terms, what brings about that link.

"You are what you eat," that's a popular saying. Well, it turns out there's some truth to that statement, especially when it comes to your mood and mental health. So, picture this: inside your gut, there's a bustling community of microorganisms, also called gut microflora or microbiota. These harmless communities of diverse microorganisms that inhabit your digestive tract, primarily the intestines, include bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other microbes, mostly bacteria to be exact. These little guys aren't just hanging out for fun; they're actually doing some pretty important work. How are they now connected to your brain: Read the full gist here; https://www.funmbat.com.ng/2024/05/how-your-gut-is-connected-to-your.html

Education / From Breakfast To Social Media Fast by funmbat: 2:47pm On May 19
The echoes of our laughter filled the room as we were thrown into fits of hilarity by "Brother John" in the Mount Zion movie titled "Gbemi". The scene that ignited our mirth was when Brother John, after a sister served him breakfast to signify the end of their relationship, broke down in tears like a baby. Earlier, he had adamantly declared he wouldn't cry over a sister, only to crumble when he reached home. In the midst of our amusement, my uncle, with whom I was watching the movie, casually asked if I had ever been served breakfast before (to break up with someone unexpectedly). Quickly, I replied, "I don’t like eating very early in the morning," eliciting another round of laughter. what then happened? read the full gist here: https://www.funmbat.com.ng/2024/04/from-breakfast-to-social-media-fast.html

Education / Re: Adisa And His SLIPPERS, Who Then SLEEP PASS? by funmbat: 2:39pm On May 19
funmbat:
I was sitting on the couch in our family sitting room when Adisa, my younger brother’s friend, came in. Prior to his entry, I was engrossed with Oliver Sacks’ book titled 'The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat.' It is about a man who had visual agnosia (the inability to recognize objects by sight unless touched or if the object makes a sound). It was indeed hilarious for me.

Adisa had been complaining about his inability to sleep for some time due to various reasons, and sometimes he had to resort to using sleeping pills. As the big brother of the house, I felt it was my responsibility to sit him down and give him a lecture of his life, one he wouldn't forget in a jiffy. I know you're interested in what I told him? Let me share some of it with you as well.

In the quiet moments of the night, as the world slips into slumber, something profound happens within us. It's not just rest for our weary bodies; it's a crucial restoration for our minds. Yet, in the hustle and bustle of modern life, sleep often takes a backseat, its importance diminished by the demands of the day.

But what if I told you that your adolescent sleep habits could shape your mental health in adulthood? Yes, you heard that right. Recent research has unveiled a startling truth: those who suffer sleep deprivation will.......................... continue reading here: https://www.funmbat.com.ng/2024/03/adisa-and-his-slippers-who-then-sleep.html

Health / What Is Dream? by funmbat: 5:29pm On Feb 09, 2023
There are different conceptual theories about dreaming. In some quarters, dream is regarded as a means of communication between the mortals and the immortals. The popular biblical story of "Joseph the dreamer" is a major reference point to the aforementioned view.
The physiology of dreaming is a complex and multi-disciplinary field that involves the study of the brain, behavior, and consciousness. Although the exact scientific basis of dreaming is still not fully understood, there is a growing body of evidence that suggests that dreams are an important aspect of brain function and play a critical role in the regulation of emotional and cognitive processes.

One of the main theories about the physiology of dreaming is the activation-synthesis theory, which suggests that dreams are the result of the brain's attempt to make sense of and integrate sensory information from the environment. According to this theory, when the brain is in the rapid eye movement (REM) stage of sleep, it is highly active and generates random electrical and chemical signals that are interpreted as dream images, sounds, and emotions.
About lucid dreaming, some people are able to have lucid dreams, where they are aware that they are ...............................

Family / Adhd; My Little Boy Max by funmbat: 5:18pm On Feb 09, 2023
Max was always a little different from his peers. He struggled to sit still in class, had a hard time following directions, and was constantly on the go. His teachers and parents grew increasingly frustrated with his behavior, and often scolded him for not paying attention or acting out. Despite their best efforts, nothing seemed to improve.

It wasn't until Max was diagnosed with ADHD that everything began to make sense. With a better understanding of his condition, Max's parents were able to find the support and resources he needed to succeed. Jokes Etc / But Kate Was My Mate; My Story In Rhymes by funmbat: 2:36pm On May 31, 2022
In those days when we used to carry our SLATES and be LATE to school because we would go after EIGHT(8am). I would carry the CATE prepared by my mother for my afternoon SATE. Kate was my MATE.

Twenty years later

I met KATE (now a big woman married to a bank manager), not on a DATE. We talked and she said that even FAITH works at the bank "ZENITH". She ordered two PLATES which she paid after We ATE. I felt like a BATE, I got home, slammed the GATE, and rushed inside like a NATE. I muttered; what is my FATE? I felt like the figure EIGHT (zero upon zero). Crime / Chrisland School; The Letter From My Mother by funmbat: 12:52pm On May 17, 2022
Just yesterday another story of 13 year old who was staying with her uncle was found raped and killed. Listen, If a man can remove the diaper of a 6-day-old baby clamp the baby's feet and rape her what would stop such a man from raping a 13-year-old little girl?

The quicker we realize that we are living in a rotten society with so much decadence every place the better for our girls. Even at school and sometimes mosques and churches, they are raped by male teachers, students, and religious leaders as well. Even at home, the girls are raped by brothers, uncles, fathers, grandfathers, nephews, and male workers

Following the leaked sex tape of the 13years old chrisland student. A mother wrote this about the event. Full gist here:

Romance / International Women's Day: What Is The Hymen? by funmbat: 10:32pm On Mar 08, 2022
Why most women won't bleed the first time they have sex. There's a very common myth in South and Central Asia (Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, etc.) and Africa (Nigeria and many other nations ) that you can tell if a woman is a virgin, by whether or not she bleeds the first time she has sex. There is zero truth in this. Not all women bleed the first time they have sex, In case you didn't read that let me write it again this time in upper case letters.

I'll explain in this post. To understand why some women bleed and some don't, it's very important to understand what the hymen is. The hymen is a membrane that tends to cover part of the vaginal opening (it does not always block or cover the entire vagina, as some people mistakenly think).

NOT ALL WOMEN HAVE A HYMEN.

The hymen also differs from woman to woman - like all women have different heights and weights and features, all women also have different amounts and types of hymen. Some women have thick hymens, some have very thin hymens, and...................what? The full version and other interesting read here: https://www.funmbat.com.ng/2022/03/what-is-hymen.html?m=1

Foreign Affairs / The Territory Of Russia, Depression And Genetics by funmbat: 8:17pm On Mar 03, 2022
The Russian-Ukrainian war is taking another dimension. The aftermath effects of war are so worrisome that you don’t need to visit Warri before one should know that it is better to settle for jaw-jaw (without being an Ijaw) than to war-war. If this war should continue, the possibilities of famine, loss of lives, malnutrition (especially among children) and many survivors being thrown into the dungeon of depression and other related psychoses cannot be overemphasized. Studies have shown that about 9 million people in the United States suffer from mental depression psychosis and about 280 million people suffer from depression and psychosis in the world.

Politics / How I Politically Bagged The Position Without A Party by funmbat: 8:20pm On Jan 22, 2022
After my Dad's accident in 2011 that led to the dropout of my 2 elder siblings, I was traumatized if going to school was achievable. As a young boy in Junior Secondary school, I witnessed a transition from Abundance to lack as all our properties were sold to save Dad's life.

After Secondary school, I knew I wanted to attend the best Engineering University in Nigeria, the vision was clear even when the money was not there, I took 2 years off. I worked as a primary school teacher during the day (7am-2pm) and retired to the car wash during the evening hours(5pm-7pm). My weekends were the busiest, I worked in a car wash from 7am-7pm (Saturdays & Sundays), each time I wash these cars, I remind myself that I don't belong here, I cried many times due to the scorching sun, cuts on my hand, getting underpaid and I told God to help me.

Fortunately, I was admitted to study Electrical Electronics Engineering at the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) in 2015. My parents and siblings were so happy for me but life didn't get easier, I did part-time jobs to cope. Each semester break, I go home continue washing cars. I did this even 3 years as an undergraduate and it was tough. My colleagues (who didn't go to school) at the Car wash mocked me, they said I'm deceiving them that I was in the university, they told my customers that I lied and I'm a bad boy, they even nicknamed me "I dey school", It was terrible, I was utterly broken, I was discriminated. Health / Committing Murder Against Myself A Stick Of Cigarette by funmbat: 6:34pm On Dec 12, 2021
A cigarette is a narrow cylinder containing burnable material, typically, tobacco that is rolled into thin paper for smoking. A cigar is distinguished from a cigarette by its usual small size, use of processed leaf, and paper wrapping. Researches have shown that cigarette smoke has about 7000 chemicals including the harmful carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen cyanide (HCN), lead among others.

I have the tendency of killing myself with a stick of cigarette. Cigarette contains many carcinogens, the most important is benzopyrene. Statistically, it is estimated that a stick of cigarette reduces 10minutes averagely from life span of a smoker. Mathematically, 10 sticks of cigarette reduce 1hr:40minutes from the life span of a smoker. Education / On university of medical sciences Ondo School Fees Hike by funmbat: 10:01pm On Dec 04, 2021
wishes to express its gratitude to all stakeholders for their concerns and interventions thus far over the recently-pronounced new tuition regime which resulted to protest in and around the campus. This, for us, is a demonstration of the love, interest, and success of UNIMED, our alma mater, which we all share as stakeholders.

No doubt, the immediate cause of the imbroglio is new increment in fees, while the remote cause of such astronomical increase is the grossly inadequate funding of the University by its proprietor. Needless to note that if the fees were this high few years ago, most of us would not have been able to be alumni of this prestigious therapeutic institution of ours. This implies that if this new fee regime is not reviewed as it were, many of the current students may discontinue their studies. This is very sad and what we shall do

Crime / The Future Cry (ekun Ola); The Mystery Of Benz by funmbat: 3:44pm On Nov 20, 2021
Our boys whom we sent to the Universities to study are now living in hotels doing Yahoo, defrauding people. They are not studying. They are sorting. Bribing lecturers for pass. Our teenage sons are now driving Benz in the university. They are now the latest boys in campus.

The houses our sons are living in the university are now flats and duplexes as against the self-contained we used to know. Well furnished and more beautiful compare to room of some state governors.

Our sons are all married in the university but single at home. Girls crawl around them... living with them, cooking for them, doing all sort of things with them...

Politics / The Coronation Of Covid-19 In Nigeria by funmbat: 7:40pm On Sep 26, 2021
The protracted strike embarked upon by the members of the academic staff union of universities (ASUU) was finally called off after reaching an agreement with the Nigerian. The umbrella body for universities’ academic staff argued that the struggle was necessary and justified following the inability of the Nigerian government to attend to various agitations, agreements and resolutions reached since 2009. Over the years, the different governments have also been lackadaisical to bearing the clarion calls to have a legacy that will make the Nigerian education sector especially the universities to be that which can stand out among comity of nations. The same attitude has always been the bane behind the woes of our health sector which Mr. Covid -19 revealed as shambolic and in a state of mess.

Remembering the sweet promises made before the 2015 general elections by the then opposition party whom some people believed to be better in opposition and criticism than in governance. One would have thought and imagined then by the loudness of their one voice then that by now, Nigeria would be insurgence free, that one dollar would be equivalent to one Naira or that the word of Babatunde Raji Fashola would have come to pass. Fashola insisted then that the problem(s) in the Nigerian power sector would be fixed within six months. Here we are, facing the realities of lies and mere political cajoling. Have will not be duped, raped, bewitched, enchanted, manipulated? Have we woken up to the realities of our daydreaming or we are still hoping to see the newness of the fading glory? In the democratic settings of Nigeria, lies have been the tool of the government; both past and present to cage us and put us............. read the full gist

Crime / Moved To Tears; The law of karma by funmbat: 6:31pm On Sep 25, 2021
I was at a mentor's office a few days ago, a self-made man, top-notch Electrical Engineer, one of the best in the country.

It's been a while I saw him, so I decided to check on him and say hi.

To his office I was a regular visitor, so the secretary was like "Uncle Yinka where is my cake? I saw the pictures of the Twins on Facebook.

"I will bring it when next I come. However, is egbon around? I asked.

"Yes but he has one visitor," she replied.

I won't take his time I just want to tell him I have submitted the proposals he asked me to give one permanent secretary at the secretariat.

I stepped into the inner office and saw him crying and laughing at the time, a young boy in NYSC uniform was sitting in front of him.

The young man was almost in tears too, wiping his face with his handkerchief.

My mind traveled to different scenarios...

I walked towards him and said, "Good afternoon Sir".He was laughing and tears were falling from his eyes really hard.

"Yinka, come, come, come and see who I saw. He beckoned. Did you do remember the story of Joyce B, that I told you sometimes ago? Yes, I do...

One thing with my mentor was that anyone meeting him for the first time will surely hear the Joyce B story, that name is a popular name, in the story of his life hustle and how he became a rich man.

When he told me the story he said. Just before the advent of chicken and chips, there is aunty Joyce B who fires plantain, yam, potatoes, and fish close to the University of Lagos second gate in the evenings at Onike. On those days, students who don't feel like cooking but want to eat something delicious will go to Joyce B to buy Akara and bread and other fried edibles, she will start frying at her spot by 6 pm till late in the night. It was in the early nineties, then there was no GSM, to communicate people usually write letters and send it via the post office, few people have landlines in their house, a telephone was affordable only by the rich.

My mentor, then a student of the University of Lagos, said before he became a regular customer at Joyce B spot, he was coming from fellowship one day very hungry, he had some cups of gari in the room but nothing else to add to it as he was passing by this Akara seller, the aroma called him, but he had no money to buy, transfixed, he stood there watching the woman at work, later she raised her head and saw him like she knew what he wanted, she just put small balls of fried Akara in a paper-wrapped it in a nylon and beckon on him.

I remembered the past; of a lowly beginning with thousand memories, of a life-changing story, of the last difficulty that deflowered the midnight innocence, and of great people whose philanthropy made my journey to this new home a reality. This nostalgia brings me closer to the reality of being in a new home that is away from the old one. With tall buildings, cold weather, strange meals, stunning infrastructures, and white-colored faces, it seems that I am now living in another heaven on earth. This is about the new home that Papa would always describe to me in those good old days. I find it absolutely hard to forget about Papa's sacrifices towards my all-around growth as an individual. Brother Lanre made it a duty upon himself that come sunshine or rain, he will be at the Train Station distributing Gospel Tracts to passengers as they board or leave the train! This he did faithfully for several years!

One day at the church service after a rendition by the choir members in the church, the choir was appreciated, praised, and given a standing ovation. Brother Lanre, instead of being happy for them was very sad. He thought his soul-winning efforts were not being acknowledged, rewarded, and recognized by the church members and ministers.

He also noticed that nobody from the station has met him to say thank you for what he has been faithfully doing over the years.

Brother Lanre decided to abandon the trips to the Train Station. Instead, he joined the choir and started singing with them. To his surprise................ WHAT HAPPENED THEREAFTER? READ THE FULL GIST @http://www.funmbat.com.ng/2021/09/the-dead-evangelist-in-choir-robe.html

Politics / News: Rainfall Persists As Flood Takes Over Major Tarred Roads In Uyo by funmbat: 9:50am On Sep 15, 2021
In what seems like a drama in the capital city of Uyo, Akwa-Ibom state, different major roads were flooded after an unending rainfall that started at dawn. This incidence caused a delay for some passengers plying such roads as tricycle riders have to take another closest routes. Areas like Nelson Mandela road, off Calabar Itu road, Atiku Abubakar way very close to the state secretariat, Udoette road and so many others were flooded. It took the dexterity of tricycle drivers to navigate through the flood on the tarred roads. Reports reaching us from our correspondents also suggest that even some parts very close to the Ewet housing experienced flood a couple of weeks ago. This is almost becoming a norm for the flood to take over major tarred roads in Uyo

A drastic effort should be taken to ensure that flooding is curtailed as the lives and properties of people are endangered if nothing pragmatic is done about it. While the government in the state should make deliberate efforts to control flooding, the citizens also need to be proactive in obeying government orders in regards to the building of structures in supposed water channels as this contributes to the happenings

In what looks like a well-arranged and meticulously prepared write-up, lies a great mystery of belief and an urge to bring it forth to our notice. stumbling upon this makes me see that there is a need beyond the write-up. when you see what Christ has delivered you from by His death, it spurs you to appreciate salvation. The sermon of hell is not to instigate fear in our hearts but to rather see again the need to appreciate the love of God. For God so loved the world, that he gave HIS only begotten son, that whosoever believes in HIM(Jesus Christ) will not perish but have everlasting life.

Jobs/Vacancies / The Legitimate Mmmm That Nigerian Youths Can Do After First Degree by funmbat: 9:15pm On Sep 13, 2021
Graduating as a first-degree holder comes with a lot of expectations in Nigeria even though the system here is choky; there are various opportunities that young graduates and prospective ones could explore after graduating irrespective of the grade they come out with. In quest of what becomes the fate of our fresh, young, and versatile Nigerian undergraduate, findings show that any Nigerian first-degree holder may dabble into one or two of the MMMM at a time.

Below is what the MMMM stands for and how graduates can explore them

M- MASTERS:

This is a post-graduate degree program that a first-degree holder can explore. One could further in his or her academic pursuit by enrolling for a Master of Science degree in any Nigerian or foreign university. There are also many federal and state government scholarship programs for prospective master's students. A Master's degree can be leverage for any young graduate, although here in Nigeria, several master's degrees and even Ph.D. holders are under-employed and some are riding Okada on our highways. A passionate person will see beyond the box and still go for gold. Under normal conditions, ceteris paribus, a master degree should be less than 3 years but there is always a general impediment to be considered, that is the strike in our universities. You are eager to know the second M right, take a deep breath, and relax.

M- MEDICINE

Most Nigerian graduates having certificates of medical-related and biological courses can pursue their said passion which is medicine and surgery. Most of the graduates in this category might have put in for medicine and surgery but were given other but related courses. If medicine and surgery is one’s passion, one can still pursue this, most time, the pursuit may not be unconnected to honor and money. I don’t actually think there is money in medicine, my personal opinion though.

Foreign Affairs / Biding For Biden Or Forbidden by funmbat: 9:06pm On Sep 13, 2021
The late Christopher Sapara Williams, the first indigenous Nigerian lawyer enunciated what should be the foremost duties of a legal practitioner. Born on the 14th of July, 1855, he was enrolled to practice law in Nigeria on the 13th of January, 1888, and died on the 15th of March, 1915. According to him, the legal practitioner lives for the direction of his people and the advancement of the cause of his country.

Except for Chief Obafemi Awolowo, SAN that started the cause of Free Education in Nigeria, his (Sapara Williams’) admonition is yet to come to fruition in Nigeria in terms of lawyers holding the reins of power. In other parts of the world, however, it has been holding true. Mahatma Gandhi of India, who started the agitation for social justice for the people in South Africa before continuing the same in India, was a lawyer. Nelson Mandela of South Africa, whose noble deeds need no enumeration, was a lawyer. Jawaharlal Nehru of India was a lawyer. Dr. Fidel Castro of Cuba, a lawyer –he obtained a Ph.D. in law from Havana University. V.I. Lenin of Russia, who changed the whole socio-economic system of the substantial part of the world by practicing the theoretical tenets of the ideas enunciated by Karl Marx and Engels, was a lawyer. In the United State of America, Barack Obama, the former president moved from the law office to the white house. His law degree is from Harvard which, surprisingly, makes him only the second Harvard Law School graduate to become president (the other is Rutherford Hayes).

Another lawyer has just been elected and will be inaugurated as the 46th president of USA. Mr. Joseph Biden Jr. born November 20, 1942, was a member of the Democrat party studied at the University of Delaware before earning his law degree from Syracuse University in 1968. Biden was raised in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and New Castle County, Delaware. He was elected a New Castle Councilor in 1970 and became the sixth- youngest senator in American history at age of 29. He served in various capacities before he became vice president to Barack Obama in 2008 and was reelected in 2012. He had various achievements, parts which include overseeing infrastructure spending in 2009 to counteract the Great Recession. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom with distinction in January 2020. Will close to octogenarian Biden make a difference (MAD) as a lawyer and be a leader for his people? It is a question that will be answered in days to come if his victory in the election will not be overturned at the Supreme Court

Below is a list of all the lawyers-turned-presidents according to their position in American history:

#2- John Adams (Harvard, then apprenticed as a lawyer)

#3- Thomas Jefferson (College of William & Mary then apprenticed as a lawyer).

#4-James Madison (College of New Jersey, read law)

#6-John Quincy .........................................

Crime / Seared Into The Heart. ..............looking Into Dimensions Of Life by funmbat: 8:55pm On Sep 13, 2021
Life is full of experiences. Some are good, others are bad. These experiences play a huge role in molding us into the persons we become. The happy experience of being with family members, the proud moment when you came out tops in your class, that pleasurable sensation when you first fell in love and had your first kiss, that overwhelming joy when you saw your name on the university admission list, are all part of life's good experiences. These good experiences are usually intertwined with some bad experiences. The death of loved ones, failure in a particular endeavor, the emotional pain of a heartbreak, are some of the sad experiences life throws at us.

Interestingly, I have observed that people tend to cling to their sad experiences while disregarding their good experiences. An undergraduate who passed all his papers experiences transient happiness that dies off afterward. In fact, there are usually little or no emotions when he wants to recollect how he sailed through. In contrast, a girl who had an extra year in school probably because she failed a course, would get so emotionally attached to that experience throughout her life. Whenever she thinks about school, she immediately remembers what she went through.

The girl who got sexually abused as a teenager would most likely harbor a strong feeling of resentment for men and her heart would be filled with indignation each time she remembers her predicament. Some of such victims now despise men and vowed never to have anything to do with men.

Some questions readily come to mind, why are bad experiences imprinted, perhaps indelibly, in our minds? Why do we refuse to heal by deliberately carrying the weight of the past on our shoulders? Why do our sad experiences leave an unforgettable stain in our hearts? Are we created to behave this way?

The gratitude of the woman who is healthy cannot be compared to the disappointment of the other woman who has cancer. The joy of the girl who got married in her 20's is nothing compared to the sadness of the lady who is still unmarried in her late 40's. The satisfaction of the young man who is gainfully employed in his early 20's is insignificant compared to the disgust of the man who is unemployed in his late 30's.

I have always wondered, does being emotionally attached to our bad experiences make us better persons? I do not think so. Many persons, while cleaving unto their bad experiences have turned down opportunities for new and pleasant experiences. A girl who refused to heal from the heartbreak of a promiscuous boyfriend might unknowingly ignore a man who sincerely loves her. Some persons have developed low self-esteem because they failed a single course which led to an extra year in school while disregarding the fact that they passed about 50 other courses. That girl who performed her rendition beautifully on stage and even got a standing ovation from her audience would only experience a momentary awesome feeling. If the same girl had had a faux pas on stage, that experience would be seared forever into her heart. She might even decide never to give a rendition on stage again.

It is true that our bad experiences cause our hearts to bleed. However, we must make the decision to heal and learn from those experiences. Just like physical wounds require cleaning and treatment to avoid emitting a repugnant smell.....................

Romance / Episodic Story: Third Party In Marriage Written By Yaradua by funmbat: 12:03pm On Sep 13, 2021
EPISODE 1

Richard: “You are nothing but a good-for-nothing wife and mother, how could you just be coming back from Heaven knows where it is you are coming from? Your son has not eaten since morning, are you daft?”

Rebecca: “Let me hear you say it again slowpoke,” she said tilting her head to one side pretending to want to hear him better. “Who on earth said a man cannot enter inside the kitchen to prepare food for his starving son? I told you I was going for The Union of Chartered Accountants Meeting and as you well know, I am the Chairlady for the union; shouldn’t your brain have told you I might come back late to prepare lunch?”

Richard: “Chairlady who cannot even take care of her little son, how can you take care of the needs of all those grownup women in your so-called union? Women sure are daft, why elect a lazy thing like you as a chairlady?”

Rebecca: “slowpoke… What do you know? All you want is to have your stomach filled, since you cared that much about Sammy and you are the hardworking one here, I am asking again, why didn’t you enter the kitchen?”

Richard: “Don’t you dare call me a slowpoke again…Do you understand?” he approached her menacingly.

He watched and listened as they raged on and on. His young mind could not comprehend how or why everything suddenly changed for his parents. He could remember the way they were before, amiable and full of love for each other that even he admired and envied them. They forgave each other easily and thought up excuses for the other’s misgivings. He thought it would last forever, he thought couples were meant to remain like that forever. But there they were, almost always on each other’s necks. Bickering over little things which were not worth bickering over. He bled emotionally for his parents’ fractured link. He just didn’t know how he could fill the void or the gulf that laid majestically between them which threatened to swallow them all up.

Richard and his wife Rebecca were the envy of whoever came in contact with them as a couple. The love they shared was out of the ordinary, there was indeed a love marriage; the type Indians call Rabyne bana di Jodi [God-made couple]. Their first and only child Sammy was only six years old when things started falling apart for their marriage. Of course, they were still successful as chartered accountants but along the way, they seemed to have lost what kept their marriage together. That Saturday evening, without minding that their son watched them from where he sat kept lashing at each other.

Rebecca: “Someone’s feathers are being ruffled at last. Dear man, come and demonstrate how powerful you are in the presence of your son on his mother. Let the tell-tale of your machismo decorate and adorn my beautiful neck and face. Your son will grow up remembering how beautiful they were on me” She wasn’t backing off, she was prepared for the worst. The elegant mound on her chest fell and rose intermittently.

Richard: “I can’t believe this. I just can’t imagine how much you’ve changed over the years, it is so surprising how you’ve decided to shirk your responsibilities as a wife and mother in the home” he said frustrated.

Rebecca: “Responsibility? Did you just say responsibility? Don’t I bear yours in this home? Or whose responsibility do you think it is to put food on the table for the family? Shall I quit my job and become a full housewife then? Or what exactly do you want from me? I really can’t do this anymore” she burst into tears and took some steps back throwing her arms in the air in resignation.

Sammy sat at a far corner of the sitting room, watching as they bartered each other with words, he had witnessed their fights get out of proportion several times and so that day, he prayed silently in his heart that his dad would not lose his cool. That he wouldn’t start throwing blows at his mum. He kept praying until his mum walked over to him with a forced smile.

Rebecca: “Baby…” she began, squatting down in front of him. “Were you very hungry today?” she asked fondly Smoothening his thick and dark eyebrows, then the tiny bits of curly hair that lined the sides of his handsome face.

Sammy: “No mummy! I am not hungry at all, please don’t fight daddy” he replied shaking his little head worriedly.

Rebecca: “Don’t you lie to me, baby boy, I know you were very hungry and I am very sorry my dear, something came up at the meeting” she said apologetically.

Sammy: “it’s okay mum, what matters is you not fighting dad, I hate it when you two fight. Promise me you will not fight him again, forgive daddy please?”

Rebecca: “You are still too young to be talking about stuff like this Sammy, I cannot promise you that because your daddy is headstrong, he keeps making us fight”

Sammy: “What is the meaning of headstrong mummy? Is his headstrong? Don’t you like his head?” he asked gloomily.

Rebecca: “You are so innocent my boy and adorable but promise me something?”

Sammy: “I will promise you anything as long as you will no longer fight daddy. I will even be good, wake up on time to prepare for school, I will do my assignments early and brush my teeth before I sleep every day” he said livening up.

Rebecca: “My baby is growing so fast” she said raking her fingers through his afro-styled hair. “Promise me that no matter what a woman does to you, you will never lay a finger on her?”

Sammy: “That is simple mum, I remember everything you do tell me: any man who lays a hand on his woman is not a real man, women are like eggs and so should be pampered, if not, they might break and get wasted. Life is not a bed of roses and so things might go wrong at some point, despite that I cannot give up, I must keep surviving” he finished happily.

Rebecca: “I said it! How can you be so intelligent? Do you even remember them exactly the way I said them? Give me five” she said lifting her right palm up for a high five while he reciprocated the gesture.

Sammy: “It’s very simple mum,” he said proudly, apparently proud of his achievement forgetting all about the fight.

Rebecca: “Now let’s go and prepare something for our little genius, toast bread will do right? Your favorite?”

She said leading him by the hand to their well-equipped, neat, and........................................
