DEBJOCH1: Wicked Nigerian, the government has invested hugely in Agriculture to make sure that the nation sustain in food production, the vision is gradually paying in, the prices of beans has crashed, we no longer import beans from Burkina Faso and the neighbouring countries, and here some enemies of the land are here lamenting about the drastic reduction in the price of beans. Shame on you all. Lol. You can't really blame them because no one wants his or her investment to be a loss. If the govt past had done their bit this would be a moot point. This storage business is a source of livelihood for some ppl.If the new trend is sustainable then grain storage will no longer be a source of income. |

FarmTech: Hello everyone. My first dry season farming met with near disaster because of whiteflies. How do you guys control it?
From my reaearch, I found out the following solutions: bifenthrin, IGR Buprofezin, spiromesifen, cyantraniliprole, NEEM oil, whitefly fungal pathogens, whitefly sex pheromone, spirotetramat. who knows where i can buy any of them? Thanks. U can get neem oil from organicfoods on nairaland. U might not notice any immediate effect but it works on d long run. For cucumbers though I noticed that once d leafs gets bigger they I don't notice them. Another suggestion is if u are using inorganic insecticides is to use about 3 diff types (3 diff active ingredients not brands) cos of resistance |

okoroemeka: yes you actually have a point in the hole system aspect because it rained heavily yesterday and the rain s are definitely coming back,he should plan for ridges to help in drainage,he can use bucket /bowl if the water source is near and the op is determined,I can't forget the year I used bucket to water almost 1500 cucumbers to maturity, poverty is not good but it gives u superhuman strength. Oga I feel u. If he's determined from bucket n bowl he can move on to hose, to rain gun and even drip (getting drip is my target now). But d bucket n bowl na serious suffer head n doesn't effectively maximize water |
Agriculture › Re: Plans For My Cucumber Farm by funsoul: 6:17am On Feb 27, 2019 |
okoroemeka: I have said from a professional point of view, this is what I do for a living,I am a farmer and pls if u don't have a good irrigation plan forget cucumbers, bucket and bowl is for a few hundred crops. Well am certainly not a professional, maybe a mini farmer compare 2 your exalted status but it doesn't mean I can't have contrary opinion 2 yours. Am not advising d op 2 use bucket n bowl it is extremely stressful. Intact from studies drip is d best so if he can afford it he should go on but if it's just bucket n bowl u have as a starter don't be discouraged And I still believe sacks preserve water better than soil this season. Either soil or sack I water twice daily NB: if u r suggesting he digs a ditch 2 plant pls take into consideration rainy season setting in soon |
Agriculture › Re: Plans For My Cucumber Farm by funsoul: 7:27pm On Feb 26, 2019 |
okoroemeka: sack will not help you manage water,u my expect a sack to be more water efficient because the water cannot go out,it's wronng, sack uses far more water than planting on soil and if you plant 2 crops in a sack u will water twice daily, sack is not water efficient,I have planted on 500 sacks for 2 years and I know that as a fact. Oga I beg 2 disagree. For rainy season yes it is impractical but for this dry season if u don't have plans for mechanical irrigation sack is d way 2 go. Imagine going round with bucket n bowl watering each plant as against sacks. But even if he has just pumping machine with hose to use I would advise he uses soil |

Jamesrock: Yes. I intend using a whole 2 plots if my capital can cover it.
What I mean by bags is sack, I want to do sack farming so as to help manage water... Since I don’t have much for irrigation yet.
I’m yet to conclude on my plans for irrigation, but what’s ur advise based on the little capital I have.
Your advice on fertilizer has been duly noted,
Pls let’s chat on what’s so that I can know more about it- 07062342648 I agree with oga okoroemeka about using sacks on 2 plots. Since this is ur first time planting cucumber i would advice u start with a smaller no of sacks especially since u will water manually. My first commercial foray into cucumber farming (did a pilot of 60 sacks at first) with 200 sacks (400 plants) was hectic having to water with bucket n bowl 2ce daily. Starting small would also allow u 2 learn without burning ur fingers too much. From 200 sacks I was able to get 24 bags |
Agriculture › Re: Plans For My Cucumber Farm by funsoul: 9:12pm On Feb 24, 2019 |
Do u intend to plant in sacks? Do you intend to use d whole 2 plots? What exactly do you mean by bags? Be specific about your plans 4 irrigation If you intend to use 2 cans u will need more than that cost of fertilizer (bag of npk would be around 6.5k at least except u can get it cheaper) |

okoroemeka: it is. exactly the same dry swamp that I went to today at 1 eagle foods ltd farm, they. just made shallow bowl shaped. depression every 50cm,, put manure, mix, water and plant, the swamp soils are fertile because silt comes every rainy season and fertilize the ground,it also retains water very well, but pray rain don't fall heavily or less sorry will be your name.if I saw this post when I was in the farm I could have taken pics of the ridges they did,I just. took pics of the harvested fruits,60 bags from 1 farm, thanks oga |
Agriculture › Re: 500,000 Naira From One Plot Of Land In 90 Days. by funsoul: 9:56am On Jan 25, 2019 |
Yampotatocarrot: Yeah, I believe he is looking at it from the angle that cucumber roots don't go deep into the soil. So, if you make the hole and add normal soil + manure in it, it just might be enough for the roots to get their nutrients and support growth of the plant, without really coming in contact with the surrounding clay soil
Let's wait for him to reply, though Thank you. Can't think of transporting another soil to that place. Will just mix manure with the soil at exactly where I want to plant and hope it will make it a little bit loose and make d compaction reduced |

Yampotatocarrot: Number of fruits per plant, z t a function of type of seed planted or other factors? Am not sure if the variety of seed has a role to play. I planted marketmore (Opv) alongside Darina, Greengo n Tokyo except for the fact that it fruits later no other difference. Factors like fertilization(those that received fertilizers after each harvest did better),staking(my staked plants did better than those not staked) and I believe watering will also have an impact (although I didn't test this fact specifically). Those r d factors I can think of |

okoroemeka: but if u plant more than 2 crops in a sack the watering will increase more than twice daily especially when fruiting, I wander how vanpelle managed to plant 4 in one sack it looks impossible to me. I guess the number of fruits per plant will also play a vital role in determining how much water that is needed. If someone with four plants has an average of two fruits per sack while someone with two plants has average of four at a time, the nutrients and water level needed will obviously be higher for the latter. But from my own pilot four is just excessive |

EMMAACHILE: Sack will preserve more water if the same volume of water is applied to both soil and sack especially during the dry season. When i used sacks to plant cucumber and watered well during the dry season, i only reapplied water after 4 days while the ones on plain soil was watered almost daily. My experience is similar to the op's own. I have to water the sack every day it does not rain while those planted on the ground didn't need additional water after the rainfall. |

okoroemeka: I am having problems uploading the pics ,we will plant tomorrow and hopefully we will have some pics,we are on a budget of 40.000 naira to manage 1500 crops for 45 days.we have spent so far #8000 seed,#1000 manure nearby poultry farm,#3500 bag of rope for staking,2 Haifa npk#3800,2 saaf fungicide#2000,10 satchets ridomilgold#3800 and 3 imiforce #3000.this is the material to see the project through.note we will not use inorganic fertilizer because anytime we use it losses of 5-10 percent occurs,a nearby poultry farm flushes it wastes away so we go organic with weekly sprays of Haifa bonus foilar fertilizer for micro nutrients the remains balance will be reserved for fuel for pumping water, but so far eedc is giving us light.can we work with this budget even to me it looks impossible but my late father use to tell me nothing venture nothing hard!
