Thank you for the response, that's good to know.

1.Does this mean we won't clear our luggage with immigration /customs before checking in at air Canada stand?

2. We have about an hour and half between landing and boarding of the air Canada flight, would this time be enough to complete landing formalities without us missing our flight?
Did you book from Lagos to Edmonton with Ethiopian Airlines or just Toronto.
are you coming on a weekday or weekends. 1 and half hour is tricky because of SIN and the crowd generally...but as a first timer if u miss ur flight the are likely to put you on the next one free.

1. No

2. To each their own. It depends on how you utilize the opportunities you have being in Canada. If your career isn't one you can do in Canada, go back to school

3. Your 250k is less than $1000. You'll make more in Canada doing minimum wage jobs.
You started well with to each there own..but comparing 250K and 1k dollars..did u consider the cost of living in Canada?..So if you make 250k monthly in Naija ..at least if u get 3k-4k after tax o o o and othe deductable its ok.

If you working as a professional in Nigeria, God forbid you come to Canada and do menial job, its forward ever.

Another issue , Nairaland helps a lot and adds extra , gives amazing information but if you want to make descions based on this alone..
then I dont know.

I know its easier to ask people but you will be better prepared with your own research...and the whole idea of being an adult is taking responsibilities for your decision..something the woman did not understand. ; cheesy

Oh...I saw a Fujistu BA advert on Indeed and Monster.

I'm not a BA...just a bloody banker cry
Goal is to switch career path.Any pointers from you or can you link me with any of your friends via linkedin?

How is Edmonton treating you? smiley
So on the BA job I can refer you, but then to be Honest the expectations in Fujistu is very high.
Not just doing a training course..especially if it is a senior consultant role...

You can start with Analyst or BA positions and in one year get to a middle or senior role.

Use LinkedIN for jobs package your CV also...

Lastly Edmontons is good, moved from ottawa an no regrets at all..

why did u choose edmonton.

Hello everyone,

I honestly need some sort of advice, assistance or help. Presently, am in dilemma whether to relocate to Canada or not. Few months ago, I applied for FSW, I have a family of 3, we were so lucky, God intervened that it took just about 1 month for approval. Passports stamped, COPR received and all of a sudden am having cold feet.

My story, I currently have a better than average, but not fantastic job in Nigeria, own a decent house. Wife has a degree, 2009 and MSC, 2015, in Computer Science, still looking for job. Laying hands on a side business though. One day, after thinking it through, especially because of the kids, currently have one, we decided to 'port' to Canada.

Now, fear of the unknown is really hunting me, wife's spirit and soul already in Canada, but am afraid. Where are we going to start from? Which province or town are we going to settle in? How do we get Jobs? How are we going to survive? I also have a degree, Computer Eng, MBA with over 5 years work experience. I may be wrong but our certificates may mean nothing in Canada, would we then have to go back to school in CA?

We still have till December before the visa expires, I am really confused, almost in a state of forgetting about everything and keep struggling in Nigeria. To resign and start one odd job in Canada would be a nightmare for me. No doubt, I want a better future for my kids, and also I want my wife to be happy and fulfilled in life, but am seriously confused and almost getting depressed.

Sorry for the long post, apologies, please assist if you can.

Many thanks.
Do you have IT experience? there is nothing like self research to see the current trend or job market in Canada and see how your skills compare... Aside from that you should be fine , taking your time is also good.

that''s my compan hiring for that role..but you have to deliver when given a task , so experience is also good.

Believe me, programming takes time to master as there are so many things to learn. So if you're looking for a stress free something, please kindly look elsewhere.

For instance, let's say you want to develop Salesforce applications, you'll at least need to know what a MVC architecture is. To have a deep understanding of MVC, you'll need to learn at least a framework that implements MVC pattern for a backend language.

Below is a list of some backend languages and some of their frameworks
a. Python (Django, Flask, web2py)
b. Php. (Laravel, CakePhp, Phalcon)
c. Node.JS (Express)
d. Ruby (Ruby on Rails)
e. Java (Spring)

Can you learn a framework without learning the language it was based on? Yes!

Should you? No!

The advantage of learning a language then one of its many frameworks is that you will
have all the basics of programming covered, so porting to another language or framework of the same language would be a breeze.

Then no one tells an intending programmer how much they are going to need to know about databases before they start learning how to program. Then there's Version Control that you will almost never hear about until you start reading job descriptions and you'll start wondering how you never heard it before. But if you're intrigued by the prospects of it all, please take the jump and be ready for the time of your life!

N.B: I'm not trying to scare you; just telling you as it is... Good luck
Another factor is experience ..learning qualifies you for an associate role or junior level which is very competitive, but with 2 years work experience or freelance....the difference is clear ..In north america experience is very important..so try get real life experience while working also.

I have stumbled on Dynamics on Microsoft's website a few times... Didn't know CRM development is a big something.

And that's the beauty of IT; you learn everyday. What's the market like for SharePoint developers?
Sharepoint is not much..it added to know dynamics and then sharepoint..cos share point is document management for dynamics...

but share point alone is not much...are u into share point and are you in canada?

Thanks. My work exp isnt too straigh forward.I'm an economist with Msc Finance.I have mainly experience in govt -macro research and operations.I'm trying to work in financial services especially operations/settlement/data entry/risk etc
As for recruitement agences,i was using Acces Canada-they tried but they are quite sluggish.I am now using TalentCor which is able to get contract roles in TD Bank.So fingers crossed on that.i am even ready to work below minium wage or free for a month in financials services just so i will be more marketable
How long were u in Canada before getting a job/I've not yet considered other provinces, let me stretch my luck in Toronto, plus i'm not ready to deal with the colder regions
Ok all the best am sure you will be fine , so have been here just over a year and was lucky cos it was IT . Landed in Saskatchewan, got a job in like 2 weeks ..moved to Ottawa..got a better job moved to Edmonton...

but yes did lots of interviews with big companies PWC , Deloitte etc and wasn't given the job but kept trying.... when I wanted to change job $$ I just kept on applying and the job i had was also good so I had nothing to loose ....did about 10 interviews that I become so good in interviews grin ..it was just a matter of time.

I used just LinkedIn and Monster.ca

for me my major issue is stability now over more money cos i dont apply for jobs ..recruiters reach out via linkedin and email..

i guess there is a shortage in my area a bit...also positioning your self linkedin and monster might help.

Almost two months here in Canada and still without a job.I refused a sales/marketing commission based role though. This wait is getting tiring now.
Canadian recruiters are OBSESSED with 'canadian work experience' .It is a huge red flag if none of your previous work or education was done in Canada. They are also obsessed with you having performed the exact same role as they advertised, they dont even try to deduce your skill set from similar roles you've performed.Very risk averse people,no wonder they are not known for Foreign Direct Investment abroad.
Keep on persisting Ray, what field are you IN? also what research did you do on job before moving to Canada..also have you considered other provinces ..

I can imagine like if you are a journalist it would be hard to break for example...also how have u packaged yourself in CV and co..

Have you tired recruitment agencies also.

I see a lot of other countries make I no mention name boost their experience to 10 even thou its only 3-4 or they do a three months course and say they have 5 years experience with reference to back it up....

But please keep trying , new provinces , new job position etc.

I remembered applying for a Manager Position at Deloitte ..asking for 10-15 years experience when i had just close to 5 ..it does not hurt too much the experience might also help.
