Hello guys, please I need info on how this credit card stuff works. Let's say you want to withdraw cash from your credit card and will be paying back in some days time. Will the interest be charged daily. Cos someone was saying TD bank charges $22.99 daily until you finish paying back. How true?
dont withdraw cash from your credit card...it is not worth it.

Hello people, need your advice.

Is it advisable to go to Driving school when I am planning to land in Canada by end of November by God's grace? Because I don't see the possibility of getting a Driver's license before leaving Nigeria.

Kindly tell me the pros and cons of taking a month driving lesson in Nigeria. Don't want to waste my shikini money that I can invest on winter jackets
Can u drive already? if not please do it in naija its about 40-45$ per hour here if u cant driver at all u might need 10-20 hours so do the maths...if u can drive u just need like 2 hours to training to pass the driving test.

Thats amazing , it does pay well thou am not in that Field. But do you have experience also. And some times jobs like that requires u have at least an enhanced reliability security clearance..but sometimes u might not need it for private companies.

It depends on the filed of IT you are in..work experience is also very very much valuable so with 8 years you should be good. Certifications are better with expereince.

Have also heard of places like Kelowna and Burnaby are they cheaper to live .

Sometimes it's not about being able to afford it or not. I am against tipping (as it is in North America) as a matter of personal principle not because I can't afford it.
Fair enough..its like a norm in the country , I said it shows courtesy also ..however its not a must and no one shout at you
if you do not pay it.
TravelRe: Living In Canada/Life As A Canadian Immigrant by Fusion23: 4:45pm On Aug 26, 2018
salford1:
Yes. It's on top of the hst, pst or gst or whatever tax is applicable. While tipping is not mandatory, it has become a norm or culture when you eat out (not fastfood), take a taxi, buy drinks at pubs or order food for home delivery. I can't remember giving tips outside these four services. Some people also leave tips in their hotel rooms for the cleaners.

When you are handed the pos terminal, you would have an option of adding an amount or % to your bill; however, some restaurants (fine dining) would automatically add a tip of 15% or more to your bill. When you also go out in groups, some restaurant would automatically add a tip to your individual or total bill.

For aslong as I can remember, every member of my team at work tips anytime we eat out, and we eat out a lot.
Thought Ontario was 13 percent hst.. anyways Alberta is 5 and tipping is just courtesy.. if u can afford to eat in a fancy restaurant u can afford to eat 15 percent if $20 is $3 . Just saying grin

I think I visited this thread after some months just in time to speak to you.....Don’t take the 65k!!! You are being lowballed big time cool shocked You have an impressive array of skills which should fetch you not less than 80k minimum. I have a similar profile though more focused on Cisco/Juniper with a CCIE RS to crown it and 2 weeks after landing I had an offer of 90-100k but declined due to some pertinent personal reasons. I currently have a contract with a telco which is worth about 70k which is “below market-rate” for my profile as the recruiter even admitted but I took it cos it fit with my plans for this year. Don’t get excited because you can get flustered when you realize quickly you have got a raw deal. Just go to Indeed.ca and see the plethora of jobs there. You are overskilled sha...I will take just your Cisco certs and tell you that you are worth at least 80k.... And you have experience with Vsphere, Netscaler, Palo Alto and F5 and you wanna take 65khuh? My advice to you...Look for a perm-role which will not offer less than 80k or get incorporated and get a contract for starters to build some Canadian experience for like 6 months and start looking for perm roles in the 90-110k range. It’s easier to leave a contract than a perm job.All you need is 1 or 2weeks notice and fewer HR hoops to jump through. Use LinkedIn...I’ve gotten tired of recruiters trying to romance me for roles all over and even in the US. You know you have arrived when the recruiters are literally begging you to let them place you in a role. Maybe we should take this offline if you wish but once again.....DONT TAKE THE 65k!!!!! Thank me for this advice later cool I hope I don’t get roasted for this but this is the realest I can get with you as a fellow IT professional. Cheers!!!
Will advice him to take it if that is what he has for now...you can go from 65 to 95 in months...in permanent roles its also mostly two weeks notice...65k is not his worth that I can agree but ...if that is all he has he should take it for now..changing jobs is not difficult

Hey everyone. I am Nigerian and Canadian PR for 1 year and have a job but was DENIED VISA to the US on June 19th on grounds of not having “strong economic ties to Canada” Can some1 explain what this mean. Who in his right mind would forfeit his PR status to go stay back in the US illegally? I am very sad and upset! I sense some racial bias because of my black skin colour. A married pregnant Nigérian lady was also denied right before my eyes. This is embarrassing. Share your thoughts please
you can alaways reapply...i know a lady was denied may be cos her job earnings was low..also not sure what you filled and what they were checking ...best news u can reapply..and see how things goes.

First off, i will like to thank you hugely for taking out time to respond, and also SWIFTLY, i appreciate...a lot.

However, my question 1. wasn't really asking "how much money you should bring?" rather it is viability of means of proof of the fund...i.e what means i need to show in order to be allowed entry in what form it is in...say it this way, with a scenario, i use TBill and statement of account for POF pre-ITA and during the PR process...however, at the PORT OF ENTRY, i am informed from the FSW thread, that one can encounter, some overzealous officer, who asked that they show minimum POF e.g they meet the required minimum $19,093 CAD equiv. of 5.4mill NGN [for family of 3] and so on.

so now the question for my situation is, at the Port of Entry, should by any means i meet such case, will my TBill certificate of about 30K+ CAD and other liquid cash of about 5-9K CAD cash in hand, be enough to show, or Do i wait until the TBill is liquidated into a cash/Dollar/dom account before landing? or even convert all the money into cash, declare and then suffer the hurdle of opening an account and depositing as early as in few hours or days of landing...asap, its dreadful even holding that amount around for even to the airport/out of naija self....haha nah naija we dey tongue shocked wink

Also, i didn't ask that from our sister thread, as i presume, it is more appropriate here rather there...as this question is more targetted to those who now have landed and living there, instead of relating to migration requirement, plans and prospect. abeg pardon my guileless!

ii.
oh, dear me....i messed this up, hahaha abeg pardon the mix up, abeg my Canny I.T guru, how market nah? make unah help me out...
Alberta, Ottawa what are my chances,,,,CCNA+MCP+MSc Info Tech,3yrs+ in Telecom, including 5yrs+ in I.T/Server Mgt, family of 3[i, wife+3yr kid].

ehe, i also heard, dem say dem say, for a regulated profession thingy, my NOC being 2147, i read&hope my assumption of I.T being regulated isn't mixed up? so does that mean i have to wait 1year of internship/pass the exams in order to begin working as a professional, even if by then, i already got my CCIE before landing?

abi them no dey recognize this Cisco/Microsoft certifications thingy or even the holy grail exam at all ni?

cc:
Fusion,

Once again, i like to say, a very big thank you and hope this meet you all well.

Thanks a lot
Hello on the part ii

The only question is how far with your Personal Research....have you used LinkedIn and Monster ? Job is the most important thing in this post express entry and I was probaly even more anxious then. So 4 weeks before landing was just checking jobs wihout applying , just to see if I qualified. IT field is very wide. But am sure there should be something for you. prolly you work on your cv and get ready for interviews..with 5 years experience in IT you should be fine.

Thank you so much @ fushion.....so I can move end of 2019 and stay two years straight and move again before the 5th year which is year 2022
Yes that makes you eligible, but you have to reapply for PR so you get another 5 years instead of applying for citizenship.

Dear NLs,

I have been a silent reader for like two months. Came on this platform to learn about living in Canada.

Got my PR in November and went to Alberta for like a month, but still have not moved finally. I'm engaged to be married but my fiance's PR has not clicked.

I have a question tho.....when would the PR ish be revoked if I don't go till about next year December (2019). I'm planning to get married early 2019 before we both finally move to CANADA.

Please help guys!!!

Thanks
Do you have your PR Card already?...the PR rules is easy its 2 out of 5 years..you have to stay in canada for 2 years in total out of the 5 years to renew your PR, else your PR can be withdrawn..so you still have lots of time.

I see lots of people here who plan to go into IT once they get to Canada so this is me dropping my two cents on what I know.

First, IT is very very wide, even my side ( software) is broad. Most of the things I'll say here apply to the software side of things and also note this is my opinion not the gospel truth.

Breaking into software engineering is in my opinion the hardest part of the field and the reason for this is because it's a practical field. Recruitment tends to be show me what you can/have done rather than what you say you can do. Its why in my opinion people in frontend (things you see) get more opportunities than backend especially for folks just coming into the field.

Another reason breaking in is a little hard is because "we" tend to recruit by recommendations. In Nigeria I worked for a big firm and for a start up and both times when new folks were needed, people just ring their contacts and state their needs.

We that out of the way, let's talk about the positives.

IT probably has one of the lowest entry barriers, all you need is a laptop and the will and you are good to go.
Because it's a field were showing what you have done is better than your certificates, people started creating blogs talking about what they're learning so there's a ton of free materials to learn anything you want to learn all you need is search.

What do I recommend?
Start with web development (HTML, CSS and JavaScript). Get a GitHub account and put everything you do online. It doesn't have to be fancy but it gives you a portfolio to show potential employers. If you are visual person you'll probably tend to move frontend engineering, otherwise you'll tend to towards backend. There are some folks who are full stack (I currently am though I don't like frontend) who do both.

Its important to have a growth mindset. The field moves so fast that by the time you learn something it's already obsolete so you'll have to keep learning.
Also you'll have to learn patience because you'll spent more than fixing bugs than writing code and those bugs would push you to the end
- in python, adding an extra space would crash your program.
- I spent the whole of today trying to figure out why what I did yesterday wasn't working anymore.

As time goes, you'll get better so hang in there and never be afraid to make mistakes. Facebook had the motto "move fast and break things".

That's all I can think of for now, I'll add more things later.

I got my job via Reddit and this is the post that got me the job. Do not be afraid to try things
https://www.reddit.com/r/ottawa/comments/7dufho/software_developer_looking_for_a_job/
Nice one AZED, for me as an IT Consultant experience is also key..its not just easy to say u learn saleforce or dynamics crm and want to get a Senior consultant position, entry level position for this are also few....so if u can use scope to gather experience that would also be helpful.

Hello Fusion23,
I have a question for you please.
How does one determine the number of years on one's drivers license?
When you say licence just over a year, do you mean expired by one year?
Finally, can you help me out with how to get the FRSC letter. I asked one of them who didn't seem to know anything about it.
I was in Ottawa before , thats Ontario..so in Alberta no one cares about FRSC Letter as far as I know , I could be wrong..so i also started my drivers license runs after I got COPR, so my originals drivers license was like feb 2017, landed canada also in february, did written test like july 2017..so was just on G1, moved to alberta and just waited will february ..naija license was one year, also gave them onatario license and applied for gdl exemption..was called by special investigation unit..bla bla ...approved for class 5 basic road test....so summary the provinces are a bit different in terms of licensing .

If your license is original there is a way u can check online so that might helps also..the naija license i mean..

Hello People of God!

Driver's License issue here o. Please assist.

I've passed the knowledge test and dropped my Nigerian license. They issued a Class 7 license and told me to check back for a
possible upgrade to Class 5. To my surprise, I got a feedback that "At this time, your GDL exemption cannot be considered. The driving license that was submitted from Nigeria does not comply with the required standards to sufficiently support your driving history."

I want your advice before I ask them to explain what they are talking about...cos I don't understand. I'm in Alberta.

What registry did you use, how many years was on your naija license, most importantly was your naija license original ??

Normal you should get a call from the special investigation unit of minsitry of transportation..so u need to asnwer those before getting back to them.
i was told am qualified for class 5 even thou my original license was just over a year..
I didnt use the fake which had over 4 years.

Hi all...I have 2 questions

1..Pls can anyone share their experience in buying a house cos av read lots of thoughts abt it on this thread, just want a personal experience plss

2..I already av 2 years work experience here in naija in banking operations,...after landing I intend working for like 4 years more in an organization.. After which I intend going to UK for my MBA(chose UK cos of their reputation more than most Canadian skuls and also the one year thingy)...after the MBA,I plan going back to my Canada to continue my career growth or probably switch to consulting ,which as always been my dream . ....pls aw do u see my plans gurus In the house... Also will my UK MBA not be an issue in Canada Coys
First things first are you close to getting your permanent residence or you still speculating, with 2 years experience and no masters you will be lucky to get ITA at this time.

Also MSC or MBA is good but here its experience over Academics...i have msc so mss or mba is also good ..if you work for 4 years am not sure you will be convinced to go back to school , when u start earning money , paying bills and all that..except you going to havard...its better you study in Canada...then again it depends on the kind of job you want and your dreams (to have MBA in a top school)
