Nigerians soldiers in Borno state on Monday killed at least 73 members of the Boko Haram sect when the terrorists made yet another futile attempt to capture Konduga, a town 35km away from Maiduguri, the state capital.

The troops, who engaged the terrorists for over five hours, however lost a soldier in the battle.

According to one of the soldiers stationed in Konduga, the terrorists tried to attack the military base using herds of cows and a car filled with improvised explosive devices.

“They intended to take us by surprise but even before they came we had pre-information about them and we laid ambush after securing our territory,” the soldier told journalists in Maiduguri by telephone.

“Initially they flocked a herd of cows into Konduga in order to create some kind of detour and confuse us to enable the suicide bomber attack from another side; but we were able to gun the vehicle from afar before it got near and the car exploded. After that, the terrorists came in large numbers and we engaged in several hours of shooting with them.”

“We counted about 73 of them that were killed and many others who got injured escaped. But we lost a soldier during the shootout,” the soldier said.

Residents of Maiduguri were alarmed by the sight of two military jets hovering over Maiduguri and moving to and fro the direction of Konduga for hours.

“We continued to engage them from 7 a.m. to about 1p.m. when an air force jet came to give us backup,” the soldier added.

Boko Haram has attacked Konduga about 15 times in the last 10 months.

The sect appears desperate to capture the town but it has failed in every attempt it made.

The Director of Defence Information, Chris Olukolade, could not be reached to comment for this story.

7-yr old suicide bomber blow self up, kills five in Potiskum


A young girl suicide bomber blew herself up and killed five others Sunday in an attack on a market in the northeastern Nigerian city of Potiskum, witnesses and a hospital source said.

Nineteen others who sustained various degrees of injury were taken to hospital after the blast in Potiskum, Yobe state’s commercial capital, a local vigilante leader told AFP.

“So far, five people were killed with the girl while 19 others have been taken to hospital for injuries,” Buba Lawan said.

A hospital source speaking on condition of anonymity confirmed the toll of the dead and the wounded. The attack occurred at around 1.30 pm (1230 GMT) during peak hours of business, traders said.

Witnesses said she appeared to be as young as seven-years-old and was the latest in a string of child suicide bombers in Nigeria. Previous such attacks have been blamed on Islamist extremist group Boko Haram.

The attack again highlighted the severe security challenges facing Nigeria in the run up to March 28 presidential and parliamentary elections.

President Goodluck Jonathan is in a tough re-election bid against ex-military ruler Muhammadu Buhari in the vote, initially scheduled for February 14.

The military pushed for the six-week delay eventually granted by the electoral commission to give it time to secure the country even though the insurgency has raged for six years.

Sunday’s incident was the second such suicide attack around the same market, where new and second-hand phones are sold and repaired.

The first attack occurred January 11, when two suicide bombers, one of them appearing to be around 15 years old, blew themselves up outside the market. The attack killed six and injured 37 others.

In Sunday’s attack, suspicious security guards and vigilantes said they had sought to prevent the girl from entering the market.

“We sent her back four times, because given her age, she did not have anything to do in the market,” Lawan said.

“When we were screening people, she bent and tried to pass under the ropes, some distance from our view. That was when the explosives went off.”

In a sign of how much distrust has been generated over the suicide bombings, Lawan said that “since the January suicide bomb attacks, we have barred women from entering the market to prevent further attacks.”

Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states, all located in northeastern Nigeria, have witnessed dozens of attacks since Boko Haram intensified its campaign in the region in the past two years.

Jonathan said in an interview published on Sunday that he underestimated the Islamists, who have overrun swathes of the northeast.

Boko Haram has recently extended its bloody campaign to neighbouring countries across Nigeria’s northeastern border as regional forces pursue them.

Over 13,000 have been killed while more than one million people have been left homeless since 2009 as the rebels try to carve out an Islamic state in Nigeria’s northeast.

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has disclosed that the Nigerian military, in its ongoing mopping up operations in the strategic town of Baga, has uncovered heaps of arms and ammunition abandoned by the defeated and fleeing Boko Haram terrorists.

The Director of Defence Information (DDI), Maj-Gen. Chris Olukolade, confirmed this is a statement on Sunday with pictorial evidence of a stockpile of various weapons abandoned by the insurgents.

According to Olukolade, "Troops engaged in cordon and search in Baga continue to discover more arms of various backgrounds and shapes abandoned in some houses and the surroundings by fleeing terrorists.

"Heaps of weapons most of which were strange-looking or destroyed are still being gathered. Many abandoned or destroyed motorcycles have also been discovered".

Unfortunately, he stated, a soldier was stabbed while another was shot during a close quarter battle which ensued as troops involved in cordon and search caught up with some of the fleeing terrorists on Sunday evening.

As part of the mop-up operation, the Defence spokesman said that a number of individuals who claimed to be residents are also being interrogated in order to ascertain their identity and motive.

He said that a group consisting mostly of women continued to hail and cheer the troops as they conduct a thorough search in the area.

"Wanting to be sure the group was not working for the terrorists despite the excitement, they had to be placed under watch.

"The cordon and search as well as patrol of the localities continue while the offensive on terrorists is progressing in other areas of the theatre of the counter terrorist campaign", he added.

Meanwhile, following the spate of recent successes recorded against the Boko Haram terrorists in the north eastern parts of the country, the Nigerian military have been put on red alert for any insurgents’ leader bearing the name of Imam Abubakar Shekau who is believed to be desperately looking for escape routes.

PRNigeria was informed by a senior military source that troops have been urged to try at all costs to capture Shekau alive so that he would face justice.

The Nigerian military on Wednesday said it has killed over 300 Boko Haram insurgents and captured many others in its ongoing six-week counter-insurgency operation in North Eastern Nigeria.

The Defence spokesperson, Chris Olukolade, a Major General, in a statement said the massive casualty on the insurgents is a result of the ongoing air and land operation in the area in the past two days.

He said several weapons and equipment were also captured while some were destroyed during the operation.

Mr. Olukolade said five armoured vehicles, one anti-aircraft gun, 50 cases of packed bombs, eight different types of machine guns and five rocket propelled grenade were recovered from the operation.

He also said 49 boxes of various types and calibres of ammunition, 300 motorcycles, six Hilux vehicles, including those mounted with anti-aircraft guns, were destroyed.

Mr. Olukolade said the “aggressive” operation by troops of the Nigerian military will continue to ensure that 11 communities – Monguno, Gabchari, Abba Jabari, Zuntur, Gajigana, Gajiram, Damakar, Kumaliwa, Bosso Wanti, Jeram and Kabrisungul – now dominated by the military is cleared of insurgents.

The spokesperson said two soldiers died during the operation while 10 others were wounded.

He said various phases of the highly coordinated operations is also ongoing in the designated theatres being handled by contingents involved in the renewed counter-terrorism campaign in and outside Nigeria.

The military had on Monday said it recaptured Monguno town and other communities from terrorists.

Boko Haram had carried out a pre-dawn attack on Monguno, which is about 137 kilometres from Maiduguri, the Borno State capital over two weeks ago.

The takeover of Monguno and other communities brought Boko Haram closer to Maiduguri but the army successfully repelled the insurgents’ attempts to get into Maiduguri.

A resident of Mbulamyel ward of Biu which is not far from the seen, Mallam Ali Usman said, ” I saw a military vehicles conveying the dead and the injured to Biu General Hospital at about 1:30pm, but I cannot give you the exact figure of casualty as the vehicles was moving with high speed heading inside town”. He said. Confirming the incident, Senator representing the area, Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume told Journalists that 14 people including the suicide bombers were killed with several others sustained injuries in the twin explosions, but the Caretaker Chairman of Biu Local Government Area, Alhaji Kumar Kadafur (Manager) who visited the scene insisted that 9 people including the female member of civilian JTF were killed in the explosions, while the injured are currently receiving treatment at Biu General hospital.

Three thunderous blasts occurred in Biu town of Borno state at about 12:50 p.m. on Tuesday.

A source who spoke to PREMIUM TIMES from Biu at exactly 1 p.m. said the blasts occurred at Yamarkumi area of Biu along Maiduguri road.

“There were three bomb explosions now in Biu at Yamarkumi along Maiduguri road. We are trying to get to the place now. It occurred just about ten minutes ago. Ambulances and security operatives are all rushing to the spot.

Eleven people were killed in a suicide bomb attack on a checkpoint near the town of Biu in northeast Nigeria on Tuesday, a vigilante and a resident said.
Gana Sheriff, the vigilante, said the attack happened at about 1:00 pm (1200 GMT) at Yamarkumi village, four kilometres (2.5 miles) from Biu in Borno state.
“It was a suicide attack by three men in a motorised tricycle. They killed 11 people, including Civilian JTF (joint task force) and child vendors at the checkpoint,” he said.

PREMIUM TIMES had Saturday reported how the Nigerian security forces launched a huge military campaign to retake a swath of territory in the North East seized by the terror group.

In a tweet Monday, the Nigerian Defence Headquarters said “Operations to Clear Terrorists From #MONGUNO and Other Communities Successful”.

The spokesperson of the DHQ, Chris Olukolade, in a statement also said, “troops in a military operation spearheaded by highly coordinated air assaults have completed the mission of clearing terrorists from Monguno and environs this morning”.

Mr. Olukolade, a Major General, also said a number of terrorists as well as truckloads of rice, beans and other logistics meant for resupply to the terrorists operating around Baga have been captured in the course of the operation.

“Casualty inflicted and arms recovered as well as other outcome of the operation in Munguno, Marte and other communities already secured, will be determined after the ongoing cordon and search in the environs,” he said.

He added that the air and land operation is continuing in the area of operation with aggressive advance towards other designated communities and locations meant to be cleared in the ongoing offensive against the terrorists.

The operation to recapture Monguno and 14 other territories held by Boko Haram kicked off February 14 as announced by the military a week ago – the major reason the security services gave for their demand that presidential and National Assembly elections, earlier billed for that day, be delayed.

Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, and the military chiefs had warned that they could not guarantee security if the elections went ahead as planned.

According to details referred to by the Independent National Electoral Commission, the military was planning sweeping onslaught against Boko Haram starting February 14, and did not want a distraction.

The military assured that the six-week extension, which will allow time for the operations, will significantly turn the tide in the war against Boko Haram, a pledge re-affirmed by President Goodluck Jonathan during a televised media chat on Wednesday.

Security sources had told PREMIUM TIMES of a massive deployment of troops and military assets, many of them newly-acquired, in the fight to re-take Monguno.

The operation, our sources said, was being personally led by L.O Adeosun, the General Officer Commanding of the Maiduguri-based 7th Battalion and the Commander of the 5 Brigade, Munguno, a Brigadier general Udoh, Mr. Adeosun, a Major General, was recently posted to Borno after the loss of Baga and Munguno to Boko Haram

A detachment of the Nigerian military has stormed the Sambisa Forest in Borno State to dislodge members of the violent sect, Boko Haram, who are believed to have used the forest as their stronghold, from where they unleash their terrorist activities.

Sambisa Forest was once believed to be the most feared hideout of the militants, where over 200 schoolgirls, who were abducted from Government Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State, on April 14, 2014, were held captive.

Military sources told our correspondent on Wednesday that “troops have commenced a major operation in Sambisa to clean the forest of terrorists.”

The source did not, however, specify how many of the militants had been captured, but said the “insurgents will be flushed out soon.”
