Islamist militants have opened a special market in Mosul for the sale of goods confiscated from the houses and churches of Christians. The Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL/IS) has dubbed the open-air market the “Spoils of Nasara” (Spoils of Christians).

The market has been positioned on the right bank of the Tigris River, which cuts through the Iraqi city of Mosul. Mosul is currently the largest city controlled by the Islamic State.

The goods for sale comprise televisions, refrigerators, freezers, air conditioning units, and numerous other electrical appliances stolen from Christian homes in the area. The market also features material taken from Syriac, Catholic, Armenian, and Chaldean churches. Prices reportedly range from 50 to 75 thousand Iraqi dinars and are drawing a large number of customers since the merchandise offered is of good quality and low priced.

The establishment of the Christian spoils market follows on the invasion of Mosul’s Central Library earlier this month, when ISIS militants broke into the library and hauled away thousands of texts to be burned, leaving only Islamic texts.

Some of the confiscated materials were sold on the black market, rather than being destroyed or burned. Last September, ISIS reportedly made millions in profits from the sale of ancient materials.

According to a British parliamentarian, ISIS is financing its operations partly by stealing and selling artifacts in Iraq and Syria, including early Bronze Age tables with cuneiform writing.

In a recent essay for The Art Newspaper, Robert Jenrick wrote, “We live in a time of the most tragic and outrageous assault on our shared heritage that any of us have seen since the end of the Second World War.”

Jenrick added that “no one group has done more to put our heritage at risk than Islamic State.”

Other funding of ISIS activities has come from the sale of oil from seized fields, which brings in up to $3 million a day, according to reports.

Prague, Jan 30 (ČTK) — Nigeria's government forces will buy Czech tanks, amphibious vehicles and rocket launchers to fight the militant Islamist group Boko Haram, daily Mladá fronta Dnes (MfD) writes today.

The Czech arms dealer Excalibur Group will deliver modernized Soviet-made tanks T-72 M1 and 16 other vehicles, BMP armored infantry fighting vehicles and rocket launchers to an African country, its spokesman Andrej Čírtek told the paper.
Čírtek said the heavy arms come from sales of redundant equipment of the armies of the former Warsaw Pact.
Czech Defense and Security Industry Association head Jiří Hynek confirmed that the destination is Nigeria.
“The tanks had to be delivered quickly so that the Nigerian army had vehicles to fight with,” Hynek told MfD.
According to unofficial information, the military vehicles will be sold for more than $8 million.
A huge Antonov An-225 Mriya transport plane landed in Ostrava, north Moravia, to carry the arms to Nigeria. It is to make three flights to Africa. The aircraft is to take the first part of the equipment there within a few days.
The Boko Haram was founded in 2002 and its militants have been fighting Nigerian central government since 2009, demanding the establishment of and Islamic state and the strict application of the Sharia law. It controls the northern part of Nigeria.
In 2014 alone, Boko Haram killed about 3,000 people. In the last five years it was approximately 13,000 people. According to the United Nations, 1.5 million people left their homes in flight in fear of the militants, known for their brutality.

Nigerian troops repel Islamist militant attack on town of Biu

Nigerian security forces repelled an attack by Islamist rebels on the northeastern town of Biu on Wednesday, killing several of the insurgents, witnesses and a security source said.

Several dozen fighters belonging to the Boko Haram militant group drove into Biu in pick-up trucks and on motorcycles, witness Yahaya Mshelliza told Reuters by telephone.

"They came shouting 'Allahu Akbar' (God is greatest) and shooting everywhere, but confronted by the soldiers for three hours, most them were killed," Mshelliza said.

"At the moment only three escaped into the bush and are being pursued by the soldiers."

A security source confirmed the events but had no further details.

Growing insecurity linked to Islamist militants is a major issue for President Goodluck Jonathan a month before polls in which he faces a rival, Muhammadu Buhari, who was seen as tough on security when he was a military ruler in the 1980s.

The military did not immediately respond to a request for comment on what was the second attack on a major town by Boko Haram militants in the past two weeks.

The group's fighters seized the military base and town of Baga, on the shores of Lake Chad, on Jan. 3. Baga was the headquarters of a multinational force with troops from Chad, Niger and Cameroon. The militants have killed scores and razed dozens of homes there, with the military putting the death toll at 150, while some local officials have put it as high as 2,000.

The United States said on Tuesday it sees the Feb. 14 election in Nigeria, Africa's biggest economy, as a factor behind the sharp rise in attacks by Boko Haram, a group which has killed thousands since launching an uprising five years ago.

On Tuesday, a suicide bomber blew himself up outside a mosque in the northeastern city of Gombe, killing at least two other people and wounding 14 during prayers.

Suspected members of the dreaded Boko Haram this morning launched an attack on a military checkpoint near the Army Barracks in Biu Local Government Area of Borno state.

Biu is the second largest council area in Borno State and is about 185 kilometres south of Maiduguri.

Residents and sources said, the insurgents. came through the Garkida-Yimirshika-Biu road and attempted to invade the Military barracks situated along the road before military operatives engaged them in gun battle.

Although, no one can ascertain whether there are casualties,people in communities around the Biu Emirates have started fleeing the area.

Sources attached to the 7 Division, Nigerian Army in Maiduguri confirmed the incident but said the military are on top of the situation.

I have said it severally that it is Educated Elites of a Nation [not politicians] that actually direct the future of nations – it is the direction they choose to go that really determines the flow the nation would go – our educated elites lost it with Terrorism and it would have to take us all a while longer to recover from the mess this class of people has put Nigeria into – when this entire madness started a few years ago, rather than lay aside their “personal ambitions and beef” [largely because a vast majority of them voted against the current government and simply refused to forgive the man that won the election – leading to them seeking the opportunity to deal with him – the first of which presented itself during the Janaury 2012 fuel hikes debacle] in support of the nation, most of them began to bring present all manners of rationalizations like “this is caused by Poverty; Corruption; Marginalization of some people; Lack of Education; the ruling Peoples’ Democractic Party [PDP] internal wrangling, etc” – there was no excuse in the world that they would not fabricate all in a determined bid not to blame the REAL CULPRITS – the terrorists!

So the terrorists who were testing our resolve as a nation [as they have just done with France] quickly found the moral courage to get bigger and better and having also found an enabling habitat in the core northern states that had historically accepted a legion of Radical Islamic Scholars as a normal part of daily existence, who had preached some form of extremism or the other to a vast number of the younger generations there making it possible for sects like Boko Haram and Ansaru to find the right recruits to supply them with an ending channel of manpower to – the rest as they say is History – even with the leadership of Northern Nigeria threatening to make the nation ungovernable if it didn’t win the 2011 elections, the right elixir had been concocted – all things working together to get these terrorists to move more heavily against Nigeria.

Then it gets worse – the Nigerian Army [perhaps by extension, the rest of the Armed Forces] are possibly more largely blessed with Human Resources strength seemingly tilting more in favor of the Northern Muslims [in fact, growing up, there were times, I assumed only Hausa People were allowed to join the Military, my apologies – but if you grew up in the South-West as I did, then chances are, you did find yourself in my shoes as well at one time or the other] so it seems some of these Soldiers feel they have “a moral duty” aside from the one they have to the nation “not to fight against Islam” albeit forgetting that this brand of Islam cannot be the same “Islam of Peace” that many moderate muslims profess – and that these extremists are further giving their faith a bad image.

You see, I am now touching on some truths that would make many of these educated elites to quickly call me names – chief of which would be “Jonathanian” and “Bigot” – but I am tired of being nice – these demonstrations in Paris was the very last straw for me – the things I am writing about are the very things that these same educated elites discuss at bars; during SuperSport Football matches; at malls; on the plane; during private chats; in Diaspora; all over the world – they are things that are open secrets but for which they would rather choose to be politically correct about when they come to the public space – rest assured, they know I am writing the very truth!

And if you doubt me, then I have one case study for you – a lot of those within this same class I focusing on happen to be Christians – some from the North but many more from the South and in fact, the South-West, have now signed up to this style of pretending as though they were not aware that “in the very beginning of this Boko Haram attacks, there seemed to have been a systematic approach by these terrorists against Christians and the Church” – they quickly began to sell the narrative of “actually more Muslims have been killed by Boko Haram than Christians” even though they could never be able to give you comparative numbers to those already available in the public domain to back up such claims even we all know that “350 churches were burnt within 4 days during the post 2011 elections pogrom.“

The NPA boats were not fitted with guns and i don't knw why. Maybe they just arrived? But i actually meant there was another bigger vessel to the LEFT (initially i said right). I cud only capture a part of it in the picture.

The smaller boat is almost like the one in the picture below

Took this snap shot on my way back from work yesterday. There is a far bigger vessel to the right of the pic i cud not ID. The vessel is painted in the colours of the navy but without guns.

there was a mock security drill in abuja today that involved special forces from all security serviced. it's in preparation for a possible westgate styled attack ( since boko haram likes to copy so much). The DSS troopers stole my heart with their gear but i got kinda confused if they were DSS or SBS since they both wear black.

@henry should be able to tell cos they wore the standard plain desert like tactical gear.
