Foreign AffairsBrunei Has Made Celebrating Christmas A Criminal Offence by gaetano(op): 12:32pm On Dec 26, 2019
Anyone found illegally celebrating Christmas in Brunei could face up to five years in prison, according to a reported declaration by the Sultan of the tiny oil-rich state.

Brunei introduced its ban on Christmas last year over fears that celebrating it “excessively and openly” could lead its Muslim population astray.

Christians and others can celebrate Christmas, but must do so in private and have to first alert the authorities.

Local Islamic religious leaders have promoted the ban, warning that adopting the trappings of Christmas is tantamount to imitation of another faith, prohibited in some interpretations of Islam.

Officials from the Ministry of Religious Affairs have also reportedly visited local businesses to ensure they are not displaying Christmas decorations, including Santa hats and banners with Christmas greetings.

Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, who has ruled the former British colony for nearly 50 years, introduced the ban on Christmas in 2014, the same year Brunei adopted a stricter penal code, based on Islamic sharia and including punishments such as stoning and amputation.

The Christmas ban is justified under the new laws – the punishment for celebrating Christmas is a fine of $20,000 or up to five years in prison, or both.

The ban has encountered some resistance – the social media campaign #MyTreedom, which encourages Christians and other in countries such as Saudi Arabia and Iran to post images of themselves celebrating Christmas, includes several contributions from Brunei residents.26 foot Lego Christmas tree

At least 65 per cent of Brunei’s 420,000-strong population are Muslims.

PoliticsKano Govt Bans Opposite Sexes From Plying Same Tricycles – Official by gaetano(op): 10:16am On Dec 26, 2019
The Kano State Government has banned persons of opposite genders from plying same commercial tricycles across the state from January, 2020, an official has announced.

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje revealed this on Wednesday at the closing ceremony of 77th annual Islamic Vacation Course (IVC) organised by Zone A of Muslim Society of Nigeria (MSSN) held at Bayero University, Kano.

Mr Ganduje, who was represented by Commander General of Hisbah Board, Harun Ibn-Sina, said the state government is committed towards upholding Islamic values.

Commercial tricycles, popularly known as ‘A daidaita sahu’ in Kano, were introduced by a former governor of Kano, Ibrahim Shekarau, as a means of transportation for women only.
This was after Mr Shekarau’s government banned commercial motorcyclists from conveying women.

Since Mr Shekarau’s exit as governor, however, tricycles have been allowed to carry people of both sexes, a move the state government has now said will be changed.

Meanwhile, Governor Ganduje at the event charged participants to face their studies and shun drug abuse.

PREMIUM TIMES reported how during his address at the event, the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar lll, faulted the Christian Associstion of Nigeria’s reaction to a United States classification of Nigeria as one of the nations where religous freedom is not guaranteed.

In his address, the Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi ll, cautioned Muslims against “growing their needs beyond their resources.”

The emir attributed the increasing rate of out of school children in Muslim North to “uncontrolled polygamy and high rate of divorce.”

The Islamic Vacation Course (IVC) was attended by students of secondary schools and tertiary instinstitutions from the 19 Northern states and Abuja.

PoliticsCJN: ‘Sharia Law Is Not Islamisation Of Nigeria’ - Islamic Scholars by gaetano(op): 2:52pm On Dec 20, 2019
Concerned Islamic scholars across the country have thrown their weights behind the suggestions of the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Muhammad Tanko, calling for the improvement of the status of the Shari’ah law in Nigeria through the amendment of the relevant sections of the constitution.

The Muslim leaders berated the outcry that followed the suggestion and emphasised for the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) that Sharia law does not necessarily mean Islamisation of Nigeria, as wrongly insinuated.

Former Executive Secretary, Muslim Ummah of southwest Nigeria (MUSWEN) and Retired Prof. of Islamic Studies, University of Ibadan, Prof. Dawud Noibi, said: “Section 38 of the 1999 Constitution as ammended guarantees freedom of religion both in belief and in practice. The whole life of a Muslim is governed by the laws of his religion. Therefore, it is the duty of the nation to provide for a judicial system whereby the relevant laws are interpreted correctly and disputes among adherents arising from such laws are resolved peacefully,”

Besides, he noted that, “there are provisions in the constitution for the establishment of Shari’ah courts anywhere this is required in the country to cater to the needs of Muslim citizens. If HURIWA and CAN are not asking that these provisions be expunged from the constitution, why do they want to crucify the CJN for calling for the improvement of the Shari’ah as other laws in force in the country are open to improvement?

“In what way is the improvement of the application of the Shari’ah for Muslims in Nigeria offensive to non-Muslims? And in what way does it constitute a violation of the provision of Section 10 of the constitution which prohibits the adoption of a state religion by the State?

“Let them bear in mind that Muslims are aware of the fact the Saturday- Sunday weekend imposed on all of us by our Christian colonizers satisfies the religious needs of only Nigerian Christian’s. Yet, Muslims are not complaining. So, let non-Muslim citizens of Nigerian cultivate the spirit of “Live and let live”.

He however urged the National Assembly to take quick action on the suggestion to strengthen Sharia law and do the needful.

Director, MURIC, Professor Ishaq Akintola, supported the CJN, noting that the current constitution is a child of British colonial Christianisation of the country, which has failed to take into consideration the multi-religious.

He said: “The system we run in this country is not only alien to Muslim culture, it has marginalised the Muslim population. Our democracy is deceptive in as much as Muslims who form the largest segment of the population are not integrated into the system. Participatory democracy is the global best practice. But not in Nigeria.

“Nigeria’s democracy excludes the Muslims. Our weekends shut Muslims out. It is the entire monopoly of Christians. Saturday and Sunday are free but Friday is not. The Muslim girl-child goes to school with tears in her eyes because she must not enter the school with hijab on her head. There is no single Shariah Appeal Court in the entire South West and Muslims in that sub-region are subjected to Christian common law in all civil matters. Muslim marriages conducted inside mosques are not recognised but those held in churches are sacrosanct. This democracy is fraudulent.

“Christian women enjoy the monopoly of recruitment into the army, navy, police, civil defence, traffic wardens, immigrations, customs, etc but Muslim women cannot because those uniformed agencies will not recruit users of hijab. Yet Muslim police women and soldiers use hijab in Britain, United States, Ireland, etc. Female Muslim graduates therefore remain jobless and impoverished while their Christian counterparts smile to the banks.

“MURIC therefore embraces the CJN’s idea of the need for constitutional amendment. It is even belated. It is part of restructuring. We hope the restructuring camp will welcome the CJN’s idea because it is not going to be about Muslim demands alone but a comprehensive one. We call for objectivity in this matter. Those who always oppose anything which is likely to benefit Muslims are urged to consider this initiative with an open mind. Constitutional amendment has all the potentials to usher in peace and tranquillity if we approach it with sincerity,” he stated.

NYSCTwitter User Narrates Her Sister's Frightening NYSC Experience In The North by gaetano(op):
Twitter influencer Pastor Mrs ọla (@deola_aderati) narrates her sister's experience as a Corp member being posted in the North. The tweets are as follows..

We were all gathered in the office given to us, Corps members, that afternoon, when a lady from J.S.S 3B was brought in by her friends. They said she's running temperature and also complaining of headache and they had no idea what was wrong with her.

A thread

They spoke in Hausa, but one of our colleagues from Jos who understood the language translated what they were saying to us in English.

We looked into the lady's face, she looked like someone that was ready to explode. She was sweating all over her body to the extent that the sweat from her hair had formed traces on her hijab, making the hijab looked soaked.

A male colleague who was closed to where they were standing quickly stood up, picked up a sachet of chilled "Pure Water" he was about to drink, took her outside the office, and asked her to open up her hijab so he could pour some water on her head. But the lady declined, protesting in Hausa. The guy was confused so he beckoned on the rest of us in the office to come outside, and asked the corper from Jos to asked the Hausa lady what the feux was all about.

The lady asked. It turned out the girl was not okay with the opening of the hijab, she said she couldn't open her hair in public. It violated her belief and all, and that the corps member should respect that.

The guy felt defeated, perhaps even embarrassed, but he reclined.

I asked the lady's friends where the school First Aid administrator was. The students said they had been to her office before coming to ours; she'd gone out, and they had no idea when she would be back because mostly she usually only came to school to mark register and leave.

While we were listening to them, the sick lady slumped to the ground, and started breathing heavily. Everyone became confused. I for one asked someone to go and call in the principal. Some female corps member rushed towards her and and started blowing her breeze with Higher Education book cover. The students I sent earlier to call in the principal came back with report that the principal was no where to be found. The sick lady was losing her breath rapidly, so we suggested we rush her to any nearby hospital. But just as we were about to carry her, we noticed she'd stop breathing.

All her friends started crying. They were joined by other students who were busy shouting "Wayo!! Aisha, wayo!!" and all, and before we knew it, the place had already been filled with legs.

Clement, the guy who offered to pour chilled water on the lady earlier on walked towards the lady and removed her hijab, despite clamorous outcry from students and the school teachers alike that he shouldn't remove it. He laid the lady flat appropriately and started offering her Cardiopulmonary resuscitation(CPR)

First, he began with chest compression and the male Hausa boys of the school who couldn't take it rushed down to fight the corps member but they were stopped by our other male corps member who were pleading with them to allow Clement do his best.

When the chest compression didn't work, Clement pinched the patient’s nostrils closed to assist with an airtight seal, and placed his mouth on her mouth to blow in air, after which he continued the chest compression.

By this time, the Hausa boys had already started throwing in stones. Every corps member standing over the lady on that corridor, aside Clement who kept on with what he was doing with the lady, rushed into our office for protection, as it was becoming more violent. By the time the angry male students would rush down to where Clement was, with intention to wound him with series of planks in their hands, the dying lady breathed out.

It was like miracle. Some of her friends who were with her on the corridor started jubilating while the others rushed towards those angry boys to pacify them in Hausa.

All through this all, we were surprised to see some of the school teachers supporting the angry boys. They were saying something angrily in Hausa to the ladies who were begging the angry boys not to wound Clement. Something that suggested they wanted him punished.

Some were busy arguing with the ladies that came to Clement's rescue, repeating the phrase "Ya sunbache ta!" now and then. When we asked for the meaning of the phrase from the Jos lady, she said it meant "He kissed her!". She said they were saying Clement kissed the sick lady.

Kissed keh!! But we preferred to stay inside the office, and pray that Clement was not harmed or killed.

When the girls pleaded for a while, pointing to the fact that whatever Clement had done should be forgiven considering he still saved Aisha's life, the angry boys withdrew and the sick lady was rushed to a nearby clinic by those ladies and Clement.

God so good, she lived.

The following day, Clement, Kelechi, and I were leaving our lodge in Bayan Kara in preparation for school as usual, when we noticed some mob were rushing towards us from distance. An elderly man led the teaming crowd. He was holding a cutlass in his right hand and a plank on the left. When he saw us, he asked a guy from the crowd, called Musa who was also holding a cutlass, a question in Hausa, and the guy responded with "She nee", which I would later got to know meant "that's him".

Though they were rushing towards our hostel fiercely, it didn't occur to us they were coming for us. First, we had just stopped two bike men who were to take us to school, and our guess was that they were coming for them.

Second, Musa was a friend to Clement. He came to our lodge and dined with us all the time.

Apart from this, he, Clement, and other boys in the lodge usually went to field together every evening to play ball. And they would come together after that to talk about life, football, and all at a man who sold tea and bread shop (popularly called "Mai shai"wink.

If Musa could hold a cutlass alongside other boys in the crowd, then they were not coming for us.

But we were wrong. They were actually coming for us. We only got to be alerted by one of those Okada riders who asked us to run for our dear lives.

It became a deer game, everyone running with no idea where we were running to. The mob also rushed towards us with great efforts. I saw Clement panting for breath, he's asthmatic. The third guy Kelechi asked us to split up when we got to a junction. We did. The narrow path I passed though was clayish.

I couldn't run that much again, so I fell to the ground. Two boys came over and one of them wanted to hit me with the plank he was carrying but the other said "Jale yariyan nen", which I would later understand to mean "Leave the girl!". I went blank after that and woke up...

amidst rancorous shouts of joy from some corps members. I was too week to lift my head around as much, but I knew I was the Z.I office. I saw him asking some of my mates to take me inside his office, and open up the windows there for me. I went blank again and woke up much later to see Halimat, the girl from Jos, and Sis Funmi watching over me. When they noticed I had woken up, they moved closer to me and assured me everything would be fine.

I asked them if they'd heard what became of Clement and Kelechi, and they started crying.

They said Clement was apprehended and beaten to stupor. He was only rescued only by the police the Zonal Inspector called in, he would have died. He's now been administered at FMC and we could only pray he would be okay.

It was then Sis Funmi told me the man that led the assault was Aisha's father. That he claimed Clement defiled his daughter by removing her daughter's hijab and also kissing her. When I asked if he was arrested by the police, they said he wasn't.

The end.

After Note:

The story was narrated verbally by my street sister Alabi Modupe. It's a story of what happened to her while serving in the North.

I creatively put it into writing to bring out some obvious points. And also withdraw the names of the state, school,

and other details she supplied me so as not to destroy the message being passed with what will seem as an attack on a tribe.

“Finance, Customs, Immigration, FIRS, NPA, NNPC, AMCON, NDIC, Federal Mortgage Bank, are now firmly in the hands of northerners!"

I have said it over and over; we are not organised and we often act on impulse. The Fulani think 50 years ahead , but we think and romanticise with yesterday. We celebrate achievements of yesterday as if they are more important than the future. What is going on is an organised sub-regional plan to establish a Nigeria that fits into their own dream. When are we going to play the flute because every time we rush to the agenda they throw in our midst and we start panting? They dictate the pace of our Politics and power game. Unfortunately our networking is so weak that we hardly have any meeting point , complete with all the strategic groups across Yorubaland” – Akaraoogun.

For those who may not know, I have more than established my bona fides as a supporter of President Muhammadu Buhari. When he was not even sure he would emerge the APC Presidential candidate in 2015, I had written concerning him, saying: ”Nigeria, in its current dire straits, needs Buhari more than he needs Nigeria”.

But that is not all, as can be confirmed by the following attestations.

“Buhari: The Politics of Age By Professor Tam David-West

October 14, 2014.

“Nigeria, in its current dire straits needs Buhari more than he needs Nigeria.” –

Femi Orebe

“The Nation On Sunday” September 28, 2014 Page 18″.

“Daddy Orebe is the most misunderstood person in recent times because his traducers don’t read their story lines well before reacting to his deeply informed analysis. He has spoken clearly on restructuring, herdsmen’s menace, insecurity and other issues. People misunderstand him because he will not join the league of naysayers”. – Dr Sikiru Eniola on Ekiti Panupo.

”Thank you so much sir. You have tried your best to give the leaders of today a long opportunity to prove themselves but the failure on their part has become so glaring” – Akaraoogun Adewale Adeoye on Ekiti Panupo.

”Sir. You said I am supporting a Malam Kwankwaso but you failed to mention that Nigerians always read your articles about how a Fulani man is the best leader Nigeria should have. Now the splendid performance is there for Nigerians to see”. –

Tokunbo Omolase on Facebook.

I wrote all the above to show, in unmistakable terms, not just where I stand on the Nigerian political spectrum, but to let President Buhari himself know that in asking what are bound to be thoroughly uncomfortable, if not ‘nauseating’ questions, they are not coming from enemy territory. Rather, they are coming from the tortured soul of a supporter of his, who has been at the receiving end of almost daily flagellation by those Nigerians who say I was one of those who sold them ‘a pig in a poke’ as well as the most tribalistic, and insular, Nigerian president, ever.

Even though, I will not go as far as to describe the president in those lurid terms, I often, in fairness to the critics, personally wonder as to how the president still manages to sleep, that is, if he is able to sleep, when he takes a hard look at how the North has come to so completely dominate the Nigerian public space under his watch to the extent that one would be right to say Nigeria is under a northern stranglehold.

Worse, really, is the fact that this seeming internal colonialism shows no signs of remission as various stratagems are ongoing, an example being the case of the Federal Commission on Nomadic Education, which has failed miserably in its core function given the number of out-of-school children in that part of the country, but is now coyly trying to embed itself in the contentious grazing reserves matter which many have said is aimed at sexing up Nigeria’s demographics in favour of the Fulani.

Mr President, Sir, I belong to many Whatsapp groups apart from individuals with the result that I have up to 1000 entities I receive chats from.

Many from these sources are daily bombarding me, as one of your arch supporters, with questions I haven’t the capacity to answer.

To these I shall return.

Like Dr Junaid Mohammed, US-based Professor Farooq A. Kperogi has in fact gone to the extent of describing your government as ‘Government of Buhari’s Family, by His Family, and for His Family’. He writes further: Before he was sworn in as President in May 2015, Muhammadu Buhari, without prompting from anybody, publicly told his immediate and extended family members to stand back from his incoming government. He even warned that any family member who used his name to peddle influence would face dire consequences”. ”I was so impressed by this declaration that in my May 16, 2015 column titled “6 Reasons Why Incoming Buhari Government Fills Me with Hope,” I isolated it as one of the six reasons I thought Buhari’s administration would “represent a qualitative departure from the legalised banditry that has passed for governance in Nigeria for so long.” Specifically, he continued: “Buhari’s symbolic but nonetheless significant gestures like telling family members to steer clear of his government and telling aides to obey traffic laws inspire me.”

I remember the president saying that and I was beside myself with joy. You could have ridden a horse in my belly. But all those soon dramatically changed that the First Lady had to cry out, protesting what she called a hijack of your government. I thought that was impossible.

Back then to my Whatsapp groups and friends where all that the First Lady complained of, important as they are, pales into almost nothing as the questions these ones raise, are so telling and Pan –

Nigerian; far beyond family.

If His Excellency would kindly overlook the impertinence, could you please get the Presidency – no, not you in person Mr President, to provide answers to the following posers from a younger friend of mine, an Ekiti like me and retired Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Nigeria – a Ph.D holder to boot – who has seen something of the world, but never ceases to taunt me with questions pertaining to ‘our’ administration.

The latest, which came via a Whatsapp chat, goes as follows:

“Oga (Ekiti salutation for elders), these are your latest achievements at the NEXT LEVEL. Any comment?

He didn’t have to repeat the ‘any comment’, as he always, unerringly, got a defence from me whenever he sends me these inquisitorial chats, which is almost daily.

This time around, Your Excellency, I am in a complete fix, and so do need help. Indeed, to taunt me maximally, he wrote that this one is only an observation.

Here they go:

“Finance, Customs, Immigration, FIRS, NPA, NNPC, AMCON, NDIC, Federal Mortgage Bank, are now firmly in the hands of northerners!

Executive, Legislature, the Judiciary, Police, DSS, Armed Forces, minus the CDS, Oil, Airports and Seaports, are all in the hands of northerners.

The rout is complete.

Chief of Army Staff tenure is over. He is still in office

Chief of Naval Staff tenure is over. He is still in office.

EFCC acting Chairman’s tenure is over. He is still in office.

But FIRS boss, Tunde Fowler’s tenure expired today and he is already replaced”.

As I indicated above, I know that the First Lady had once observed that you do not know many of those working in your government, but that notwithstanding, I think it is necessary I remind your Excellency, that Nigeria presently has no less than 250 ethnic groups divided into six geo – political zones . Under no circumstances should all these happen as they are totally unconscionable, and a matter of great discomfort for us your supporters in this part of the country. It is extremely nauseating that a part can so torridly dominate the rest when those others are no slaves.

No genuine supporter of yours can be happy, or roll out the drums, for this state of affairs as they are not only unthinkable, but ungodly. It is even worse, given Nigeria’s current realities of mass poverty, unremitting insecurity, all on top of a seeming northernisation policy, as if the other ethnic groups are non- Nigerians. Unfortunately, Nigerians are not hearing a word from non northern APC leaders as to what negative consequences all these may have on the party come 2023, and one begins to wonder as to how they explain all these to their people. This failure on their part can serve as a mitigating factor for the President, but even then, it would be pointless and unhelpful,

Whatever the president can do to correct these incredible anomalies will be of great help to the party, will mollify the people, and most probably, secure a positive legacy for you.

Otherwise all your positive contributions to Nigeria, at these extremely difficult times, may come to naught, which I pray, God forbid.

By the way, is it not Mr Malami who should have gone to court to challenge NASS N14m & N12m monthly pay? All he will ask is for the court to declare whether NASS pay is reasonable or not in the light of the level of unemployment in Nigeria today and workers’ minimum wage of only N30,000 a month.. A verdict of “unreasonable” is all Nigerians need to march on NASS. May God bless our country..

We've been asking for a constitutional amendment to enable equity and fairness across the country, as well as to aid the restructuring of Nigeria but it's constitutional amendment to convert Nigeria into a sharia state that is important to this regime.

SOUTHWESTERNERS, una well done. It's now very obvious you guys are not politically aware.
