Career › Re: How Do Atheists Handle Religion In The Workplace? by Gamesmart:
CoolAmbience:
Well, I am neither an atheist nor a religionist.

I have built a non-negotiable, solid principle of tolerance for people's private beliefs, especially as it relates to worship and religion, over the past 12 years.

I once worked in the management of a privately owned oil and gas services firm in Rivers state, where the CEO compelled even muslims to be part of the morning prayers. No one dared to stay away.

One morning, I arrived and went straight into my office just as they were about to pray. Minutes later, he joined and inquired about me and was told I was in the office. He walked in angrily and demanded that I either joined or leave his premises.

I left and never came back. I created my own firm months later. Mind you, I told him from the beginning my stance on these things but he assured that it would not be problem. Perhaps, he felt I would not dare face the uncertainties of life outside his company.

In my less than one year of my working there, I facilitated three high profile international partnerships using my network, which got the two of us to travel to different countries in North America. Though I was meant to have stakes in these partnerships and become co-owner, it was more in his overall interest.

Let me not bore us with a too lengthy piece, while his firm is now fast declining, mine is just hitting the growth stage. I believe in imbibing principles that promote enhanced peaceful co-existence among people and cannot negotiate that with any employer. Because of that singular experience, we have a policy that mandates staff to keep their private worship personal, as group prayers are not allowed in the office.

Make no mistakes, this came with a price. The family suffered o. But my ever supportive wife stood gidigba as she shares same ideology. Afterall, if you loose your job, life will certainly go on. This mindset keeps propelling me.
Of course your company would grow as you obviously have more sense than the retard employing you before, whose company is now in decline.

Wrong facts. Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates are not atheists.
Please where do you get your news from?
You mean, from where you get your news from, they pray at Facebook and Microsoft before a meeting or work?

Atheist people generally don't allow prayers in their companies.
You cant even pray in atheist countries.

So the person you are addressing is valid in his point.
Why do you need prayer in company?

You can't pray in your church?

A bus is currently on fire on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos.

The cause of the fire is unknown as witnesses on the spot could not give any account other than the fact that passengers were seen rushing out of the bus after it halted suddenly.

The fire eventually got out of hand, despite efforts by road users to help put out the fire.
At least you have demonstrated an ability to respond to feedback and try to improve.

So maybe there is actually some hope for you.

bigfrancis21:
First, I don't mean to discourage you but the thing about Canada is that their residency is easy to obtain but job prospects in the long run are quite very slim. The Canadian economy isn't as buoyant as that of the US.

Second, I must be honest with you you have a solid source of income going on for you and I would not recommend that you abandon your system all in the name of going abroad. There is a category of people I would recommend going abroad and those to not go abroad. Those who are very hard working but yet don't have anything to show for it in Nigeria and who also don't have any hopes of enjoying a middle-class lifestyle in Nigeria despite their efforts and toils, I recommend yes, go abroad if you can. Life abroad rewards hard working people with a middle-class lifestyle - a car, house, secure job, security, best of amenities etc. (all these are not free, you pay for them), however, for those who are entrepreneurial or have solid systems in place already going for them in Nigeria, it would be folly to pack up your systems all in the name of going abroad, because for every immigrant life abroad starts from scratch and you need about 3 to 5 years to catch up with others (financially, residency wise, educationally, credit wise etc.). For some people it may even take as long as 10 years, depending on how focused/determined you are. Whereas with the same 5 to 10 years ahead invested in Nigeria from where you currently are, you could expand your pharmaceutical business as you intend into a multi-million naira venture or expand through the pharmaceutical industry. In addition, you can always visit Canada, the US etc and stay as long as you want and enjoy the best of both worlds. At that point 5 to 10 years you'd be better off than your counterparts abroad in terms of how much income you get to keep in your pocket (less taxation in Nigeria). In case you don't know, taxes abroad are quite high and the federal government keeps a substantial amount of your earnings. For example, you earn the same amount as your friend abroad but you keep way more than they get to keep due to difference in taxation. My recommendation? You are doing very good already in Nigeria to fold up all in the name of going abroad only to start life all over and spend the next 3 to 5 or 10 years starting all over. Keep investing and expanding financially from where you stand right now and visit Canada/US/UK as many times as you want.

In the end, the decision is yours to make.
Best advice!

My guy, you've said it all.

I was once in OPs shoes. I quickly dived abroad, only to get there found out that, it's not as green as people paint it o! I ran back but it was too late to go back to the job because I resigned before leaving. However, God was merciful and helped me to get another govt placement (without pushing any buttons). It's not been easy though but better than nothing. Lesson learned: sometimes, you dont value what you have until you lose it.

My advise: Op, you can travel out but don't resign your job! Take a study leave. In this way, you have a plan B: should you finish your schooling and oyibo man begins to play you the racist card.
What racist card?

Plus you spend huge amounts of money to get your basic needs what you will normally get almost free in foreign countries.

When you are through with your degree in canada and get a job there, you will be earning far above $150,000 per annum, this is above N4mil per month in naira equivalent. You can even make more than your current Nigerian salary while doing unskilled jobs at Canada while you school.

Save your future and that of your unborn kids; you are young and no family to tie you down. N400k is not that lucrative; convert it to dollars and you will realize you are not making that much; but to Nigerian standards, its fine.

Leave this gaddam country abeg.

Truth is N500k buys you better life here in Nigeria than there where half will go to tax.

Why not get an online or part time degree if just you want is a Pharm D but even if you just wan go stay for Canada, gather like 10m to 15m so that you don't start with struggling over there
You will NEVER get a better life in Nigeria under any circumstances.

The quality of life in Nigeria is extremely poor.

The only things you can get in Nigeria better than a place like Canada are: Self-importance and savings.

NOT a better life.

Don't let Evans ever hear you say that kin rubbish again. He would advice you to get DSS escort and bullet proof car if you no wan see him.

Don't mind him.

Complete crap and some are praising him.

People should just marry because "they shouldn't be 60 and their children 20". That is his concern, the ability to raise and support the kids as best as possible is not important, what is important is that the father should not look like their grandfather.

Then in future, his like would turn to prayer to feed his own kids.

Typical Nigerian mentality,
Always praying and hoping without action.
This thing called religion has made lots of Africans mentally lazy to come up with optimal solutions.

Prayers won't fix bad roads
It won't build schools nor hospitals
It won't fight or stop corrupt politicians from stealing
Action + prayers will
Well said!

Useless mentality that is not even worth paying anyone with it N5,000 a month.

Is not like that bro, the truth is that most employers are using the unemployment situation in the country to 'milk' the youth. It's so painful that there is no labour law in Nigeria so any body can do whatever he or she wants because he/she is an employer. We should know that there are private employers in other countries but they abide with the laws of labour and won't pay 'shit' to pple, but in Nigeria anything goes, the worst part is that fellow Nigerians ll be the one saying that; he owns his job and he can do whatever he wants ...what!!!!

The day I know that Nigeria is 'sick' was when a friend with HND, BEng (UK), Msc (UK) , CCNA. applied for a lecturing job in a private Polytechnic he was offered N30k. So, my dear what ll you say about that ...
What labour law do they have in other countries that you think is not in Nigeria and you would like to see in Nigeria?
