This article is about engine idle. Idling is running a vehicle's engine when the vehicle is not in motion. This commonly occurs when drivers are stopped at a red light, waiting while parked outside a business or residence, or otherwise stationary with the engine running. When idling, the engine runs without any loads except the engine accessories. Idling MythsEdit Myth: restarting the engine uses more gas than idling. Reality: an engine restart uses fuel approximately equal to 10 seconds of idling. Myth: restarting the engine causes greater engine wear than idling. Reality: restarting causes less. Myth: cars need to idle to warm up the engine. Reality: the engine warms up faster when being driven. Source:http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Idle_(engine) |

To answer the OP's question, as others have said, no, it's not true, then or now. That myth perpetuated in the early 70's as cars started being outfitted with catalytic converters. It is true that if you idle an engine for long periods without getting the engine rpm up, the condensation in the exhaust would pool in the converter and if you didn't blow it out, it would rust out the cats prematurely. That's more or less true today as well, but modern cats are much more efficient and resilient to it. It's still the main reason why you should always bring an engine up to operating temperature and drive it for a bit, rather than starting it and shutting it off before everything has warmed up. Some one hit my parked car from the rear while driving in reverse, (luckily there was no major damage), but I noticed while he was driving that he was using his mirrors only without turning his head to look back while in reverse. I use the Traditional method of look rear while reversing (even if there's a parking assistant installed) but I noticed there are some die hard mirror drivers that prefer the use of the mirror. So I ask what's the smartest way to drive a car in reverse? https://blog.mlive.com/chronicle/2008/09/01teendrive.jpg Or https://ak1.picdn.net/shutterstock/videos/2830252/preview/stock-footage-woman-inside-of-car-looking-in-back-mirror-and-trying-to-drive-in-reverse.jpg |

tolex29:Could be engine mounts, might also be a transmission problem. Scan the vehicle and do a visual inspection of the mounts. |
In delta that does not make headlines. |
Drgreatone:Build up of sludge over time. To avoid this allow engine run idle for at least 10-20minutes every morning so the engine oil will get to normal operating temperature before taking of on your short 1.5km trip. Same should be applied on the return trip. P.s I'm assuming there is no hold up or traffic. |
