diportivo:mileage is actual. Car is a good buy if the 2doors on the right were replaced |
The world has left us and we are still complaining about NEPA in nigeria ![]() |
topsylee:driving pattern. Car might be fine. highway and city driving are not same |
OgaKazeem:cooling fan operation, Thermostat present, distance covered on a daily basis. |
herveze:idiot. You walk and they use the car, until you can afford 2 cars. idiot. |
OgaKazeem:your engine will burn 5w30 engine oil (for sure) the aim of using the oil, is essentially for its cleaning agents. You will still have to go back to 20w50. Meanwhile you are yet to solve the cause of the sludge, because it will come back if it is not fixed. |
Inception:nah latter I see this one. OgaKazeem:do shorter oil changes, with mobil 1 5w30, 2,000 miles max, it will de-sludge engine very rapidly. |
OgaKazeem:want to go invasive? Or non invasive? |
OgaKazeem:simple, replace engine. |

Orchid45:1 cold bottle of water for you sir! |
with the rains and floods here, I was on 2 trips yesterday that go up to my bonnet! There are vehicles that will not take this form of abuse and get away with it.... You know ya sef. Expect more suspension related issues, for my bois with electronic steering I de wait unna, the lights will soon start blinking on the dashboard. if you are yet to include flood damage to your insurance policy, now is the right time to meet your insurance people and update your info, you will pay a little extra, but if it hydolocks in deep water, insurance pays for the damage. Drive slow and steady on wet roads, especially at night, no sudden braking, and always be close to your hazard lights just in case of hard braking from the cars in front. In the morning bend down and look at your shafts, if the booths are torn, it's cheaper to replace them than replace entire unit. Expect a lot of wheel bearing noises soon, it's only natural, try and replace with original units so it does not become a cycle of repairs. May the force be with you. ![]() |
The honda E2500 generator, Bought by my Dad in 1984, was hardly ever used as it was very noisy and heavy, it took 2 individuals to move it from the car garage to the front porch each time it had to be used. It was sparingly used from 1984-1986, not used from 1986-1990. www.nairaland.com/attachments/6952511_86_jpegd75fc1c7b6210753aedf5f157641950c from 1991 it came to lagos, and was used intensively in an office on Allen from 1991-1998. And finally brought home for use. That's when I got my hands on her ![]() first problem was it was kept out doors, and didn't fare well with the elements, water got into the fuel tank, got into the electricals. So I learnt how to clean tank and carburator, learnt how to clean coil. Sadly I was not trained at any of this, and I guess I set the RPMs to high it was not long, engine started smoking, I had watched Uncle jamain ring our 1.3liter nissan prairie (horrible vehicle) and there were left over rings whiched I had kept for no reason.Nah so I start o! Open Cylinder head, remove fly wheel, the number of things I destroyed before I got to the crankshaft ehn, is only God that will forgive me ![]() I bought a hand file, and started filing the rings one at a time to bore size, put every thing back, took another day or 2 going to "Turner" blacksmith to re-thread all the bolts and studs that I had damaged started put everything back, and gen did not start, took another day or to for me to figure out how the ignition system worked and how adjusting the coil to low would result in no spark. Passed that hurdle and the thing started o! No smoke for a few weeks, no oil shortage either, until one day the thing went prrrr ratatatata skibidipapa and boom boom boom engine don knock o! Connecting rod busted ![]() Guess I had reversed the piston direction and possibly the connecting rod, and done so much harm to the engine. Well saved up some more lunch money and headed to pencinima area with the old piston and conrod went to a generator repair shop and I got a shiny new replacement part, got home and installed it, engine ran but was rattling ![]() Used a few days to brain storm what next I could do to reduce the rattle, I could see the excessive play on the crankshaft and new if I didn't reduce it, noise would still be there. Out of the blues, I brought out my hand file and filed in between the mating surface of the connecting rod and it's cap excessive play gone, put every thing back again, started engine, it was quiet, I was proud of my self www.nairaland.com/attachments/6952756_screenshot20180410080548_jpeg2bfb636d8fb036f5f21715db79e64878it is times like this I think back and laugh at some crazy things I did, there a difference between a circle, and an oval shape, the thing lasted for some time maybe 1month, but the smoke was unbearable, and I could not keep up with the oil burn costs, tried new rings, but was unable to do it like the first time with the nissan rings. Long story short next knock was legendary, and I gave up on trying to salvage the generator. Saved up more lunch money and other jobs, and for the first time in my life, I headed out to ladipo in the nissan. Went into a warehouse and after long negotiations, Bought a suzuki engine that I could mate with the electric motor. Installed it, it was much quieter than the noisy honda, but the pulley was bigger and I did not understand the principles of gear ratios, so I could never figure out why with all that speed, I was getting low voltage ![]() I got angry and sold the mechanical suzuki part to a vulcaniser down the street, and took the motor to Onyigbo and sold it for 6500 naira, in the 90's that was a lot of money I went and bought I better pass my neighbour, I used that gen at home and almost all thru university. The end. slamstanlee:a 2003 toyota corrola produce 11th week of 2002 is already 15years old, and a sprinter when it lands. Cars only age quicker in nigeria. |
I will give this quick lecture on fuel consumption and sludge, how they relate. Newer cars from 2002-date have variable valve timing systems, these systems work with oil flow/pressure to determine timing settings. You will notice most engine covers with inscriptions like VVTI IVTEC, CVVT etc... its all same technology every one just wants a special name tag. Now here's the snag. You buy a happy toks car, it's a sprinter.... 0-60 in 10secs ( it's a bloody Corolla) 6months later it stops sprinting, 1 year later it's a log of wood and engine vibrates when ac is turned on, finds it difficult to climb hills and fuel consumption has almost doubled. Now here's a bit of what happened (Nigerian 20w50 sludge context) The timing settings are set to a retar.ded position when inactive or without any instruction from the ecm. With sludge in the mix, it is almost always in 1 position. The OCV (oil control valve)has oil strainers that keep dirt out of the device, and once engine develops a sludge issue oil flow stops. Engine will not throw a rod, but timing setting become epileptic, or get stuck in a retar.ded position, making the engine very in efficient. Pics below show what the OCV oil strainers will look like when engine has mild, sludge, and when it is clean. So take out time and clean your OCV strainers, you will get better fuel mileage. ![]()
