Good day man, been deliberating on getting the 04 crv manual transmission but there are a lot of reports on AC problems (black death) / compressor failure on these models.
My questions are
1) Is it worth the risk of buying the car despite the multiple AC failures report
2) If AC is repaired fully, how long should I expect the AC on the CRV to last before another compressor repair
3) What is the total cost of repair
4) Can the compressor failure be prevented.

Would you advise me to install AC components in my BMW e36 m40 engine. It is non AC from the manufacturer. My Mech discouraged me with the excuse that such would kill the engine in no time since that's not its stock condition.

It would be helpful if you were to state the general principles and assessment framework for import duty on vehicles.

For instance the tariffs associated with year, vehicle type, engine capacity commercial or private. That would prevent a lot of unnecessary information requests and help inform people even before they go through the import duty clearing process.

To be informed will equip people with the information that will prevent them being duped, scammed and over charged in the first place. Most clearing agents keep the process shrouded in mystery to take advantage and essentially abuse thier supposed customers.

You will be doing a great patriotic service, thanks in advance.

Gazzuzz, can you also verify if incomplete duty payment was done? That is what I am afraid of.

We can analyze that easily. E.g if 200k was paid as duty for a 2015 Prado.

It does not really matter either your mechanic is educated or not, the most important thing is to get a good mechanic.
Some are educated but have little knowledge while some are not educated with vast knowledge.
The major difference is the ability of educated mechanic to use Car Diagnostics tools and equipment to resolve car problem and to Counter Guess work done by uneducated mechanic.
My mechanic is not educated but very popular in my area,work from mon/sunday and Only those that have patronise a workshop can tell if a mechanic is good or not.
Oga gazzuz and others on nairaland are famous due to the good news shared by those that have patronised them.
Both educated and uneducated have their merits and demerits.
What would have happen to Nairaland car talk section without the educated mechanics ?
For a while I have been looking forward to oga gazzuz free scan that my mechanic cannot do even when I needed it !
And
I can't imagine calling oga gazzuz on sunday morning that my car develop issue and I will want him to come and check but my uneducated mechanic will come around before dropping the call.
I respect educated mechanic and I don't look down on the latter!

I read everything about your testimonial. I deeply regret not knowing you till now because i just replaced my entire engine and gearbox but noticed the speedometer unresponsive and delayed gear response when accelerating. I drive a Toyota RAV4 (2002). See below for more info.


Each time I want to take my car to the mechanic, I always develop the fear of the guy destroying something else after fixing the reason for the visit. This was the case with the last mechanic I frequently used until I got tired of him after he completely knocked my car engine and destroyed the gearbox. I had to take a driving break for about two months before I purchased another engine and gearbox.

Now, the new mechanic, who was recommended by the engine seller, installed the entire package only for the speedometer not to be working and a delayed/sluggish response transmission whenever I accelerate. I noticed this when I test-drove the car from the mainland to the island. The engine works perfectly fine but for more than 3 weeks now,I am yet to start driving the car just because of the two problems mentioned above.

The car is currently with my auto-electrician (Very educated Auto-electrician) who said something needs to be changed in the gear. He said the speed sensor (which is perfectly ok) is not being turned by the gear and hence speedometer still stagnant at zero reading. When he turned the speed sensor with his fingers, the speedometer responded but when connected to the gear, it remains stagnant.
He has checked everything every other electrical faults/signal/sensor that may be responsible but none of this seem to be the problem.

I may have to come with the car on saturday although a little scared driving with a faulty gear.

Ezenwachi, can you provide details of how your transmission is shifting? What gears does it or does not have? Stacked shifts, delayed shifts, flares? Does it fall out of gear completely?

Make sure all ABS signal faults are corrected. There is a ground cable towards the rear of the engine. Make sure it is properly fastened.

Scan the car, and post code(s) here, though Toyota's ratio codes are mostly useless. If possible, post ATF temperature after the car has driven for like 15 minutes.

A worn transmission does not care if you replace the ATF ice cold, or furnace hot. In such cases, Abro is 'better' than best of the synthetics. If you are a tech here, do not undertake auto transmission service job without finding out why the owner has chosen to do so. If possible, check for historical transmission codes and drive the vehicle around. 95% of owners never change their ATF unless there is a problem .
