Car Talk › Re: Getting Rid Of Engine Oil Shortages by GAZZUZZ(m): 9:37am On Nov 01, 2016 |
TRYGO: @gazzuzz. This was what I meant: In North America, for instance. You have a lot of snow, and sometimes, temperatures getting as low in to the -.....°C. So, in this situation, if the engine has in it a thicker grade(talking about viscosity here now) oil, you know that at that extreme temperature, the engine would have to do a lot more work(cranking the engine), for it to be able to overcome the immerse thickness of the oil before the car finally starts. The risks in here is that the oil pump does much work trying to pump a certain volume of oil to the gallaries of the crankshaft, camshaft, etc. So, the engine is prone to damage. That's why car manufacturers recommend or specify that lighter grade engine oils be used in that part of the work.
In climates like ours(tropical in nature), temperatures here sometimes is similar to that in the middle East. They go sometimes to as high as 40°C. So, that's why when you get import a Tokunbo car in to the country, I advise the car owner to switch to something a little bit thick grade. Maybe 20W-50 , etc(pls this is my own personal calculus. You could decide to stick with what works for you). But simple engineering tells me that fluids expand or contract, depending on temperature difference. So, for instance. If you've got a car manufactured for the US market and climate, and was imported to Nigeria for use, definitely using a lighter grade oil, in the car would cause problems. At least I have experienced that. At such a high temperature, say, 35°C, coupled with the extremely high engine temperature of the engine, you'll realize that the oil becomes extremely very light, and begin to seep through points like the interstices of the engine(I.e, in between sump, and engine block; valve covers; in some instances you might even hear rattling noises). But if a thick oil grade us used, the engine operating temperatures, and the outside temperature would definitely make the engine run more smoother, by "reverting the oil thickness, to a lighter grade one, as though the engine was made fie the US market in Nigeria".
I hope you're OK with the this explanation. Amy concerns you have, or questions, feel free to bring drop them here, or you coukd send me an email:
oigonojoseph stable.com So if I brought a 2006 lexus with a 2gr-fe engine you would advice me to pour 20w50 into it?

chyk1: Hi guys, i was taught that driving a car (automatic) with both feet is bad, as your left foot is used only in manual cars for clutching while your right is for alternating the throttle and the brake. After driving inconsistently for abt 2yrs nw, I discovered that i use both feet to drive automatic and it's really more comfortable and easier for me than using only my right foot. Pls i need your opinion on this because i'm really troubled and people have been telling me its not good to drive with both feet. Thanks Mods please do the needful. in an emergency, you will be unable to respond appropriately. I can imagine you pressing both pedals at the same time to bring the vehicle to a halt |

Car Talk › Re: Do Your Car Overheat? Then... by GAZZUZZ(m): 2:31pm On Oct 31, 2016 |
jakautoworld: … When your car is overheating, it can be tempting to panic. After all, this car could soon leave you on the side of the road, right? If you take fast action, you might be able to get to the nearest service station before the car shuts down. Here’s what to do when your car is overheating: 1. Shut down the air conditionerIf you see the temperature gauge going up, try turning the air conditioner off. Open up all the windows. This will take the pressure off the engine and give you a chance to get to help before the car dies. 2. Turn on the heaterThis might seem like a terrible idea during the summer, but the engine heat is what fuels the heater…so by turning on the heat, you are allowing the car to cool down just a little bit. If you must do this during the summer, make sure to roll down your windows! 3. Pull over as soon as you canIf you are in a city area, you might be able to find a service station or gas station almost immediately. But if you are traveling a long distance or out in the middle of nowhere, you might have to pull over before you get to a place where you can get help. If you must pull over, don’t open the hood until the engine stops steaming – this could take up to 30 minutes. 4 .Keep some coolant in the carYou should always have a small bottle of coolant in the car for issues like this. If you don’t have coolant, water will do. But again, be sure not to open up any part of the engine until it is all cool to the touch. You will have to be very patient! Once you can open up the engine, check the coolant levels and pour the coolant into the proper reservoir, if necessary. 5. If you are in traffic…Shift your car into neutral or park, then rev the engine. Do this gently! This moves some coolant through the engine and helps to keep things cooled down. You should also aim to “creep” rather than to stop and go in traffic, because you don’t want to use the brakes. Using the brakes creates friction, which then creates heat. 6. Call for a tow truckAt this point, if you can’t spot the problem and fix it right there, you will have to call a tow truck to get you to help. Fortunately, most radiator problems can be fixed quickly, but you should be prepared for the idea that your problem might take much more time to repair.
Tips and Warnings for Dealing with an Overheating Car
When dealing with car overheating, your safety comes first. If your car is steaming or smoke is coming out from under the hood, pull over immediately and get out of your vehicle. This could mean that a fire is brewing, and that is definitely a situation you want to get away from as soon as possible. If you do open the hood, try to do so only when the car is cooled down. If you see flames or any evidence of fire, don’t even try to open it – just call your mechanic and back away. Never open the radiator cap while the radiator is hot, as the release of pressure could lead to serious steam and liquid burns. Even when the radiator is cooled down, be careful when you open it. Use a thick rag to protect your hand, and when you open the radiator, be sure to open the lid so that it faces away from you, just in case steam is released. Never lean over the radiator to look into it. Do not add coolant or water to the radiator when the radiator is hot. Doing so can actually crack the engine block, thanks to the abrupt temperature change – and that means a small repair just turned into a serious, expensive problem. If your coolant is entirely gone from a serious leak, don’t try to drive the vehicle.Call a tow truck instead. Driving a car without coolant means that it will lock up in just a few minutes, and that will absolutely ruin your engine. Be safe rather than sorry and call a tow truck to come help you.

kellystech: Please I need a solution to this problem, my Honda baby boy doesn't steem fine in the morning. I took it to my mechanic he told me we need to change the 6 plugs which I did and the problem is still there. Nw his saying I will need to service my nozzle but I don't know if that will be the solution. After the engine gets hot it steems very fine a scanner is a useful tool in diagnosis, but work can still be done without a scanner. A simple cylinder drop test can pinpoint the misfire issue and isolate it to either low compression, sparkplugs, coils or injector issues.

cucumbar: Please, I have been having these codes, P0456 and P0457 for like 6 months now. Both have to do with a leak in the evaporation or emission system. I changed the fuel cap which is the first attempt at resolution recommend, but it did not solve the issue. Now, the other components that have been submitted to be the culprits, I don't know where they are in the car. To make matters worse, I live on an island where you don't have access to competent mechanics. Please could you give me directions on how to direct a mechanic to fix this? There are no problems with how the car drives yet, but I hate seeing that check engine light on, and yesterday, a security man told me he perceived the smell of petrol while I was driving out. The car is a 2007 Honda Accord. your fuel tank is unable to hold vacuum. It is leaking, mechanic should find the leak. 2 ways you can do this. 1. DIY: find the leak.
2. Workshop: take it to a workshop and pay for the service. Contrary to what you said, there are good workshops on the island. |
