When I inquired as to the origin of that name "Lakwa" that was given to water hyacinth by the Ilaje river tribes, it was explained that "lakwa" is short for the full Yoruba sentence of "La ku wa", meaning go and die.

Wondering why water hyacinth is associated with death, I learned that it is common for boats to be TRAPPED for DAYS in DEEP water, by a thick mass of floating water hyacinth through which conventional outboard boat engines cannot make progress. Furthermore, I was told, the mass of tentacles that is the lakwa water weed, would quickly entangle and drown even the most powerful swimmer who dared leave any boat stuck in place by the weed mass.

That said, the menace of lakwa floating weed, is a multi-million dollar business opportunity just BEGGING to be exploited, by the importation of AIR BOATS, from the USA, to Nigeria.

Powered by airplane engines mounted in rear-facing cages, airboats are IDEALLY suited to gliding effortlessly over ANY water weed surface, for MILES on end, without breaking a sweat. No Lakwa growth can impede the progress of an air-boat. Why nobody has imported airboats to Nigeria thus far, is a true mystery, because the earning potential of such amphibious craft is ENORMOUS, particularly where floating weeds such as lakwa, are a danger to river transport.
