© Israel Arogbonlo Lionel Messi (a.k.a Leo) is an Argentine-Barcelona footballer widely known as one of the greatest players of the modern generation. He has won FIFA world player of the year four times. Lionel Messi was born, 24 June 1987, in Rosario, Argentina to a working-class family. His father was a factory steel worker, and his mother a cleaner. Blessed with a wife, Antonella Roccuzzo and two sons: Thiago, who was born on 2 November 2012 and Mateo, born in April 2015 respectively. He has often been described as Diego Maradona’s successor because of his prolific goal scoring record and ability to dribble past opponents. “I have seen the player who will inherit my place in Argentine football and his name is Messi. Messi is a genius, and he can become an even better player. His potential is limitless, and I think he’s got everything it takes to become Argentina’s greatest player” – Diego Maradona He began playing from an early age, and his talent was soon apparent. However, at the age of 11, Messi was diagnosed with growth hormone deficiency (GHD). This was a condition that stunted growth and required expensive medical treatment, including the use of the drug Human growth hormone. His local club, River Plate were interested in signing Messi but didn’t want to pay for his medical treatment. However, Messi was given a trial with Barcelona, and coach Carles Rexach was impressed – offering Messi a contract (written on a paper napkin!), which included paying for Messi’s treatment in Spain. Messi moved to Barcelona with his father and became part of the prestigious FC Barcelona youth academy. Messi progressed through the ranks and was given his first appearance in the 2004/05 season becoming the youngest player to score a league goal. In 2006, Messi was part of the double winning team which won both La Liga (Spanish League) and Champions League. By next season, (2006 - 07) aged just 20, Messi was the first choice striker and an essential part of the Barcelona team – scoring 14 goals in 26 league games. In the 2009 -10 season, Messi scored 47 goals in all competitions, equalling Ronaldo’s record total for Barcelona. As the seasons have progressed, Messi kept improving and breaking his own records. In the calendar year of 2012, he broke the all-time world record for most goals scored in a calendar year. His final total of goals in 2012 was 91 – beating the previous record of 85 by German Gerd Muller, and Pele’s milestone of 75 in 1958. Today, Messi is considered the highest paid athlete with Net worths of about $127m followed by his rival, Cristiano Ronaldo's estimated at around $109m. Indeed, Messi is a million in one player that keeps making a great impact in the world of sports particularly football. We are blessed to have such a star during this age. Happy birthday Leo!

Israel Arogbonlo, Lagos The Assistant General Overseer of Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries, Pastor Ladejola Abiodun has described men who only live on their wives' incomes as disgrace to manhood. Abiodun made this statement known during a sermon titled "Power to excel in life and destiny" at the church's International Headquarters, Onike-Lagos on Sunday. The clergyman further expressed his disappointment over the lackadaisical attitudes of some men who fully depend on their wives for livelihood. He said: "Waiting for your wife for food is an abuse of manhood. You can't be depending on your wife for everything and think you'll excel in life and destiny. "Wearing trouser or boxer does not make you a man but hardwork with great commitment does." According to him, the wish of God for every man is to excel as the head of the home and exercise control over all things under his care. However, he noted that the agenda of Satan is to pervert the purpose of God for man. The AGO summarized his message with a Biblical passage in Proverbs 4:18, and urged the congregation to make God a priority in their life.

Israel Arogbonlo ...Appoints Former SARS Commander The executive governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello has confirmed the dismissal of Major M. M Adama (Rtd), the Chief Security Officer of Kogi State University over the incessant killings in the state varsity. This development was contained in in a press statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Onogwu Muhammed on Monday. In his statement, Muhammed commended Yahaya Bello for making security of the state a priority. "His Excellency, Yahaya Bello has taken steps to end cultism and the gangland-style attacks which has plagued the state university at Anyigba for sometime now. "The Governor is said to be quite displeased with the blatant manner cult groups now attack one another, commit robberies and other crimes, and put innocent students and other members of the university and host communities in danger," he said. Governor Bello, who is also Visitor to the university, has therefore approved that Major M. M Adama (Rtd) who has served for over a decade as the Chief Security Coordinator of the institution be immediately replaced with Mr. Aurelius Yusuf Adejo. The CPS also noted that other security measures to arrest the situation and bring perpetrators to book will be rolled out in the coming days. Mr. Adejoh is a retired policeman and SARS commander who is very familiar with the security profile of the university town and its environs. He is expected to build on the legacies of his predecessor while bringing new ideas and approaches to quell the danger posed to the school by cultists and other criminals within the KSU community. The Governor, according to the statement, is determined to make sure that the Kogi State University, Anyigba enjoys the full benefits of his reforms in the institution, especially a predictable academic calendar and improved human and instructional resources. It will be recalled that late in July of 2017 the current administration in Kogi State proscribed activities of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in KSU to eliminate strikes and other forms of industrial actions which tend to delay projected time of graduation for students. The new security measures are expected to help the institution consolidate on those gains.

Israel Arogbonlo Did you know that cultism has killed over 13, 000 Nigerians in the past few decades? Reports have further shown that out of the estimated proportion of those killed, 80% of the victims are between the age brackets of 18-25 years. This simply suggests that the majority of the victims are youths. Recently, not less than 10 students have been reportedly killed by cult groups in Kogi State University, leaving many of the students wondering of who would be next on the death toll? As a keen observer, the cause for the incessant killings in Kogi State University can be traced to the nonchalant attitude of the various stakeholders to nip the issue at stake in the Bud as at when needed. This has further generated into other root problems such as low academic performance, emotional instabilities, fear, etc. Way back to its history, cultism is believed to have originated particularly in Africa as a result of African traditional system of worship, which is known for the reference of supreme beings and entities as well as ancestors. They also believe in mystical powers of life. Hierarchy is an interesting thing in any form of religion and especially in secret cults. They tend to have a history with intimidation, threatening, killing, rape, arson, and robbery. In Nigeria, cultism started as a movement to fight for the rights and privileges of students popularly championed by the Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka. At its inception, the movement was a noble and just cause to fight for the voiceless within the four walls of the varsity. It became apparent later that some students cannot fit into this class thus, began the mushrooming of other groups or cults who constituted themselves into a protection group that fought and advanced the “rights and privileges” of their members including passing exams, acquiring girlfriends, accommodation, etc. That was when a noble idea began to derail till it decayed. The effect of cultism on the learning process cannot be exhausted as both intra and inter-cult clashes negatively affect students because it often leads to outbreak of violence on the campus which leaves students wounded, maimed or killed as the case may be. It sometimes leads to rustication or expulsion of both innocent and guilty students. There is no gainsaying the fact that when any of the aforementioned happens, the learning process, the psyche of students and the peace of the campus are adversely affected. In cases of closure, hospitalization, suspension or incarceration, the resultant effect is that learning is suspended for some period of time. Having established the effects of cultism, there is need to fully understand its dynamics and operations in the parlance of the modern day school setting. Cult groups on campuses come in shades. There are the hardened and the peripheral. The latter quickly shed their obnoxious affiliation once they fling the doors of the Ivory Towers behind them, barely enduring the frightening reign of chaos. The former are career cultists who would graduate to mind-boggling dare-devilry. Whichever one, they can all be re-orientated into orderly, civilized conduct. The popular groups are Aye, , Black bra, Daughters of Jezebel, Viqueens, Kegite club among others. In summary, the university authorities should improve facilities and living conditions on campuses so as to minimize perceived strain in the social system. The universities should also be reorganized, funded and provided with sports facilities so as to make them attractive, involving, so that youthful exuberances of students will find a rewarding outlet in competitive sports like football, athletics and others which could engage students in their spare times. The idea of students forming vigilante groups to monitor cultists should be encouraged and well supervised. Prompt action concerning cases of cultism is also a necessary condition as delay in taking actions against offenders worsens the situation. It is recommended that any member of the public, no matter how highly placed, linked with the activities of cultism on campus should be tracked down and brought to book. These among host of other recommendations would help in a fight against the death messenger - cultism. NB: The writer proposed a campaign tagged "Anti-Cultism Advocacy" to fight against cultism on Nigeria campuses. The general public would be informed when the campaign commences.

As a keen observer of good governance, I would like us to know that no government can perform 100% without having the full support of the people at the grassroots. Knowing fully well that no government can be island of knowledge in a state where we need ourselves to build a great nation. Based on the ongoing political downturns in Kogi, I would like to draw our attention to why we must embrace the “Kogi Koya” movement led by Senator Dino Melaye. Here are the benefits you would derived from joining the movement: 1. The movement gives room to a government of the people, by the people and for the people. A true definition of DEMOCRACY. 2. It allows all inclusive government where everyone can participate in decision making particularly in the best interest of our DEAR STATE- KOGI. 3. It advocates a system that fights against HARDSHIP, DEPRESSION and MOLESTATION of the good people of Kogi. 4. The movement believes in good governance as what should be obtainable in the state particularly in terms of policy making. In lieu with this, the movement calls for a “people oriented” government that gives room for FEEDBACKS. 5. The movement is out to silent all forces against the GOODWILL of the right thinking members of the state. 6. The movement is strictly meant for all LOVERS of good governance and development in Kogi state particularly sons and daughters of the CONFLUENCE STATE. 7. Lastly, the movement gives you the opportunity to bring back sanity to the impoverished state of affairs in the state. Written by Israel Arogbonlo, Lokoja

Social commentator and Professor of Communication at the Kennesaw State University, USA, Farooq Kperogi has described the lawyers representing President Muhammadu Buhari at the ongoing presidential election tribunal for questioning the citizenship of the Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Atiku Abubakar as historically and constitutionally illiterate. Prof Farooq said this on his weekly “Note from Atlanta” opinion article titled “Atiku’s citizenship and Buhari’s illiterate lawyers“, saying the president has always had a penchant for attracting underwhelming, intellectual incurious rubes. He said, “The law of attraction says like attracts like, which explains why Muhammadu Buhari is a magnet for mediocrities.
