If Lagos rice mill comes up and serves Lagos at least (the highest population), then we await Dangote rice mill and an even bigger one in Katsina I think by a Katsina business man, then it's shikena. Price would definitely become at most 25k everywhere. |

Another one again, rice galore . The 160-ton a day rice mill completed by Nigerian business woman, Fatimah Binta Bello in Kano . FBB will also be expanding production as demand for rice increases. Rice paddy is in high demand by mills these days , which in turn will create additional income for farmers

Nigeria to begin export of rice
The Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria (RIFAN) and the Tiamin Rice Company have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the processing and sale of rice domestically and abroad.
This information was disclosed on Wednesday in Abuja by Mr Aliyu Ibrahim, the company’s deputy managing director.
Aliyu said the initiative was aimed at the cultivation of quality rice paddy by RIFAN while Tiamin processes and packages with state-of-the-art milling technology for sale locally and internationally, particularly to Egypt.
He said the MoU would be operational for two years. It was signed at the company’s 600-metric tonnes per hour capacity mill in Bauchi State.
“RIFAN and Tiamin share a common agenda in the area of rice farming and milling. This is to ensure a sustainable supply chain management of rice under a partnership that seeks to produce, mill and package processed rice of the highest quality for export and local trading.”“With a combined capacity of 920 tonnes per hour from its two mills in Kano and Bauchi states, Tiamin Rice is one of the largest producers of rice in Nigeria,” Aliyu said.
Making rice available: According to Aliyu, the company also has a 10,000-hectare rice farm in Udubo, Bauchi State. He said large-scale wet and dry season farming takes place on the farm with state-of-the-art agricultural machinery. |

rvp20182: The zoo is weaning herself from oil by force.
"Nigeria is now ranked as Africa's fourth-largest oil producer behind Libya, Angola, and Algeria", according to Oxford Economics Africa, citing IEA data, as Nigeria output estimated at 1m barrels in October
These are big falls in oil production in both Angola and Nigeria over the last decade and a worrying trend. Sets a big challenge for governments that have to start taxing their people rather than use tax revenues from commodities. The temptation is naturally to borrow instead This is temporary, Nigeria should be top place again this month. Back to number one position. Mkenya2019: The important thing is that TIME. The big cost remember is borne by Africans buying shitty locally produced things very expensively. If you mean rice, local Nigerian rice is no longer as shitty as it used to be (at least to an extent) because there's a growing competition and rice mills are springing up everywhere. Nigerian rice was supposed to be expensive or close to 20k naira in 2014, but imports were subsidised for some stuff because those were the days of high oil production as well as high oil prices. Hence Government could make food cheap. Also I don't think rice is that cheap anywhere in the world. How much is 50kg bag of rice in Kenya? |
Politics › Re: Kenyans Are Far Behind Nigerians In Every Aspect – Fani-Kayode by GeneralDae: 6:05pm On Nov 16, 2022 |
Mkenya2019: My problem is that Nigeria protectionism is a repeat of the failed import substitution policies that Africa did in 60s/70s/80s. The only difference as far as I can see now is that private sector or Dangotes are one getting protected - previously it was SOEs.
Nearly all developed Countries began from US to Asia protected their infant industries but they had a very strict timelines; rice farmers need to know that it's favour consumers are doing them buying expensive local rice that maybe of poor quality; and they have to work hard to produce high quality cheap rice.
What I dont understand for example is why cement became more expensive locally and there is no end of sight when Dangote should compete with cheap imports?
Kenya has had the same issues - there is always cry to protect local farmers or industries - from competition - but I am glad now Ruto is very clear - you either compete or die.
To compete regionally, continentally and globally - means working on your productivity & competitiveness - and it can be done. Any protection should be time bound - and then gov has to be strong enough to allow competition. Your policy looks good on paper but it is unrealistic for African countries generally because of our low productivity. First we need to restrict competition and look inwards for a time like USA and China did, after that we say to the world: Let's play the game boys. Don't get me wrong, imports are not bad but we should first be productive to an extent. Nigeria, Egypt, South Africa imports a lot. |

Mkenya2019: Then allow competition because the loser is million of Nigeria consumers; and winner if any are few farmers; You are confused about something here. You don't allow competition when you haven't even started the game properly. Buhari only closed the border after a few years of supporting rice farming in Nigeria because the populace would not magically begin to buy Nigerian rice due to the fact we weren't top of our game then as well as a mental slavery of many of our people (false disdain of anything local). Also, and most problematic, we have too many traders who love the importation business so much. We also have Benin republic whose economy at the the time depended so much on this Nigerian huge appetite for rice as well as imports from Thailand. When rice farming began to grow locally, Benin Republic was a big problem to us, and the borders had to be closed at that time to regulate the import of rice (not completely ban imports). Now many more rice mills have risen in Nigeria since that time and there are many projects which began but were slowed down due to COVID-19. If we are importing 90% of our rice like we used to do before and there was no policy regulation to help investors and local farmers, those investors may not have been motivated enough to build today. If we didn't kill the habit that made us over-rely on Thailand for rice in 2014, by now we would be licking our wounds because Thailand and India ( world biggest exporters) may restrict rice exports next year making it much more expensive. Not everything must go according to the textbooks. |

Mkenya2019: The only thing he has done is to make rice unaffordable to many When it was being imported/smuggled - it was 12,000 naira - if I can recall Now it's 42,000 naira or I heard.
You cannot grow local economy by Dangote type of closing the borders.banning imports - and making Nigeria SUFFER.
That is rigging the economy for a FEW so million can suffer - Nigeria poverty has gone through the roof.
Grow the economy by increasing the productivity and competitiveness of Nigeria.
Ask yourselves why Asians are producing rice cheaply - DO NOT BLOCK ASIA imports.
Invest in what they do - 5 times fertilize application, better husbandry, GMOS and such.
Buhari has been a disaster for everyone except Dangotes. Closing the borders and banning imports in order to grow rice farming is one of the best policies of Buhari. Another one is banning the use of cryptocurrency in Banks. Temporal ban of twitter (for more than 7 months) may have been a crazy one though. We Africans need a little dose of Buharism sometimes. |

obaaderemi: How did Buhari destroy Nigeria? Some of his policies failed and some are commendable. He did a lot of work on infrastructure, train, roads, ports, etc. His strides in agriculture will be felt for long. Nigeria's GDP didn't falter under him. Revenue went up under him.
He got it wrong completely with insurgency but a lesser country would have been completely overrun by now. He made horrible mistakes with the foreign exchange stuff as well. But overall he has his merits, as well as demerits. Just like any other African leaders.
On certificates, Sakanjawhatever also has his issues. No one is sure if he had his certificates or not. So? Buhari actually has a certificate that could be said to be equivalent to a masters degree today. Most people just follow the crowd and hearsay, they don't know what they are talking about. While answering “A Request for Graduation Information for Muhammadu Buhari”, Kerr replied: “Nigerian Colonel Muhammadu Buhari is a graduate of the US Army War College Class of 1980 and earned a US Army War College diploma. Note: The Army War College first awarded Master’s Degree to the class of 2000”. rvp2018: The best way to know which country manufacture (truly) - leave what your lying NBS stats body does - is to check 1) taxation and 2) very easily who import finished manufactured goods. That is best way to counter-check. Large manufacturing meaning VAT and such kind of taxes would baloon. This why countries try to become manufacturing giant - because it easy to tax goods, employees etc,
Granted - let us look at who import and export FINISHED Manufactured goods. This you cannot just lie in - because another country has to confirm.
It would be similar to we export 600M dollars worth of aircraft and ships to Namibia Import is not the problem. Even South Africa and Egypt imports more than Nigeria. These three countries import the most but produce the most as well. No African country is a giant yet in terms of manufacture of finished goods (South Africa doing the most here) and Kenya is definitely not close. |

obaaderemi: Thanks, mate. I've always suspected this. Even Ghana with a smaller population is ahead of Kenya here in dollar terms! I live in Nigeria and I Know how much manufactured goods made in Nigeria I see on the shelves of major shops. It's not heavy manufacturing in the real sense but there's almost a Nigerian version of all the foreign goods here. They're small factories everywhere. How a Kenyan could compare Kenyan manufacturing to Nigeria's is beyond me. It's madness.
Nasco alone will be a major company in Kenya. The thing is Nigeria have small businesses scattered around. I did my service in Anambra, I don't think I saw too many companies but virtually almost everyone there has a small/ medium business, they are either trading or doing small scale manufacturing. Some of these people are counted as unemployed as though they are idle when they are just underemployed. There are just over 90 million smes in Africa and Nigeria has over 45 million of them. There are 90 million SMEs (Small and Medium Scale Enterprises) in Africa, forty five (45) of those are in Nigeria. If Nigeria could have 50% of SMEs in Africa even though our population is just 18% and GDP is 18% of the whole of Africa’s GDP, it does tell you that entrepreneurship is a comparative advantage for Nigeria''.https://www.africanews.com/2021/02/04/africa-s-manufacturing-sector-in-2021-business-africa/ |

He has done more damage to Nigeria, irreparable damage. I don't think so. Debt is a problem if your national income is shrinking to $30 billion as the national budget for a country of 210 million people is a disgrace. Bloated government agencies, nepotism and corruption are the root cause. Why has the government failed to recoup the $64 billion that the IOC owes the country? Why isn't the MDA remitting funds to the treasury? Why isn't NLNG remitting funds to the government? Yeah if we block the loopholes and improve gas infrastructures, do more tax reforms, we would get more revenues. Buhari has been improving our non oil tax revenues, ease of doing business, etc. The corruption in NNPC should definitely be checked. Nigeria is an oil-rich and gas-rich country in 2015, the country was exporting 1.8 million barrels/day in 2013, it was 2.5 b/d the target was 3 million b/d, yet Buhari, the minister of petroleum has reduced the export to 700k b/d. Why aren't the refineries working its now 7.5 years? Nigeria is an oil rich country but in 2015, 27 states were bankrupt and had to be bailed out. Current production is 1 million bpd. |

You import almost everything save for agro-processing or a semblance of it. You are the one who says Dangote cement and other locally manufactured cement are expensive at 4000 naira. What’s your plan for the border? Are you going to construct a border wall like trump? Or reorganize a task force to be stationed at the Zamfara border?
What’s your plan for the police? They need to tell us these things I think their manifestos explains all of these already. For banditry coming from outside as well as the border control, you have to be more careful because you may not fully know your enemies who are outside. |

That forfeiture is proof that he was involved in moving drug money. Not involved in the direct sales but he accepted by not making a claim that he moved Drug money.
