TheGoodJoe: For the last point, Tinubu had a chance of recovering a million dollars, so he would not go into hiding.
It's just like saying Hushpuppi, knowing he has been caught would present himself to American courts because he believes he would be able to save 75% of his money back. It makes no sense.
TheGoodJoe: The judgment clearly stated that the American government took the money because they were proceeds of drug trafficking, not because Tinubu did not pay taxes. This money is proceeds of drug trafficking.
If there were proven proceeds of drug trafficking, the American Government would not just take 460 thousand dollars out of about 2 million dollars and then let him go free with the rest.
TheGoodJoe: The main question is what does the law say. Section 137, subsection 1(d) of the 1999 constitution as amended states, “A person shall not be qualified for election to the office of President if - fine for any offence involving dishonesty or fraud (by whatever name called) forfeiture - meaning
the loss or giving up of something as a penalty for wrongdoing. It is illegal for Tinubu to run for president. There is no spin. A competent court found him guilty of wrong doing.
I will respond to you because I know you are reasonable. The competent court did not indict him if you study the documents. What the documents prove to us is that:
1) 10 accounts including family and business accounts had received some proceeds from clients who were involved in drug dealing.
2) They could not prove that Tinubu himself was involved.
3) Tinubu was guilty of not paying taxes to the U.S Government from 1984 until 1992, hence the taxes had to be deducted too.
Finally, Tinubu was in Nigeria then. If he was a drug baron he would have completely abandoned the case to go into hiding and not present himself to the U.S where he had to forfeit taxes.
rvp20182: Kenya. Industrial manufacturing is relatively strong in Kenya compared to countries at similar levels of economic development. Growing by an average of 4 percent per year over the past decade, it now accounts for nearly 20 percent of economic activity and provides 12.5 percent of all formal jobs in the economy, about 280,000 jobs. The most striking growth in production rates has occurred in dairy, chemicals, and fabricated metals production, all of which expanded by more than 50 percent between 2010 and 2013.77 Other notable sectors include textiles, pharmaceuticals, furniture, leather goods, and motor vehicles, for which Kenya is the prime supplier to the rapidly urbanizing East African market.78 Investors in Kenyan manufacturing have already benefited from SEZs, where downtime caused by electricity and other power interruptions are significantly less frequent than in other areas of the country. Almost 20 percent of all manufacturing jobs are located in Export Processing Zones
Your manufacturing output is 7% of GDP at 7.9 Billion dollars.
rvp20182: Lame excuse. Nigeria is off chart compared to even most informal economy like Burundi or Niger or CAR or SOMALI. That is because GDP is overcooked/overstimated. It completely an outlier.... There is nothing more formal than 65B dollars' worth of manufacturing. That should guarantee lots of taxes - maybe 15-20B dollars.
India state budgets is 625B dollars. India federal budget is 400B dollars. Total budget 1 trillion dollars GDP is about 3.5 trillion dollars
Why is your manufacturing output just 7 Billion dollars?
68816419: @bolded: India, one of the most populous and productive nations in the world, has a budget of US$400 billion, yet Canada, which has a lesser population with smaller economy has a budget of US$430.13 billion, which is more than India. How would you elucidate that?
Ditto, and India's budget has only been increasing because they have began to formalize. When they were very informal in those days, they still had big economy and manufacturing but way lower revenue streams for the Government.
68816419: These people are extremely delusional; the size of the Nigerian manufacturing sector is 8.09 times greater than that of Kenya and 4 times greater than the combined size of all of East Africa. I even wonder how we degraded ourselves so low , considering that Ghana, which has a smaller population than Kenya, has stronger manufacturing industries.
I swear down. We degraded ourselves so low with this argument. I myself was shocked to see the data and had to clean my eyes twice considering how proud they are of Kenyan manufacturing, touting Kenya as a country based on manufacturing and services because it has no resources.
68816419: @RVP: Nigeria is a behemoth in manufacturing(Ships, Boats, APC....), IT, banking, entertainment, and agriculture, so this is for you: Nigeria exports ships.
Nigeria manufactures many things. I cringe when some people including some Nigerians say we only produce crude oil. The ignorance is alarming. Guys are producing stuff but many are in an unregulated environment.
Eriokanmi: I'm so happy with this news. Only importers would understand my mood tonight. Dollar will drop to around 500 Naira before end of this month as predicted. Amazingly, this isn't about Naira redesign. Its a global thing. Sorry to those who changed their Naira to Dollar at a peak price.
It's not a global thing. Naira suddenly got stronger for some reason.
obaaderemi: They're always hiding the horrible stuff about their country. How can their biggest company fall by 50%? And he is always boasting about his government's 30% stake in that company. Their stock exchange must have lost a lot of capitalization because Safaricom is like 80% of the Nairobi stock exchange.
Their stock exchange lost a lot. They only started coming up this 4th quarter. Their market capitalization is about 17 Billion dollars now I think.
sulaak: $42 billion external debt and rising 33% Unemployment 100 million in extreme poverty Oil shortage Oil thief Importing dirty fuel Mass corruption Insecurity Fulani Herders Mi
litants Nepotism High Inflation
I thought the argument was that Buhari did nothing at all and there was no progress to continue from? Anyway let's discuss some of your points.
$42 billion external debt and rising
Debts are no problem if we continue to expand the tax net, stop subsidies, and complete gas projects.
33% Unemployment
This is bad but the COVID contributed too. Note that Nigerian Government did not lay off any Government worker during COVID-19 and even during 2016 recession. This Government also brought in the N-power which many have benefited from. Also, unemployment was always above 30% in this country. PDP's unemployment at 8% is impossible. We only got better with accumulating the data of unemployed people.
100 million in extreme poverty
Some data says 73 million, some say 88 million, others 95 million, and you say it's 100 million. Whatever the case, I feel there is something wrong with data gathering here. Nigeria has 109 million people with access to phone and internet. An extremely poor person living below 1 dollar a day should not fall into this bracket in my opinion. Transactions made online in the first 9 months of 2022 were said to be over 200 trillion naira (480 Billion dollars), also the top four Bier companies in Nigeria made over 1 Billion dollars in the first 6 months of this year. Given all these facts, how can you say 100 million people out of 206 million people live below 1 dollar per day? What is the figure for the active workforce of Nigeria or adults above 18 out of this 206 million and how can virtually almost all of them be extremely poor and still buy phones?
Oil shortage
Oil shortage is also due to lack of investments and maintenance over the years by foreign companies because there are lesser funds now for them due to climate change.
While some of your arguments are valid, I'll say no Government is perfect and a Tinubu Government in my opinion is better than the other candidates presented.
Phantom233: Tinubu has said it before..."I will continue from where Buhari stopped" my question is where did Buhari stopped? this is sacarsm. Buhari stopped at the brink of total collapse of our economy so Tinubu will simply collapse the entire economy from his words.
Buhari stopped at:
Siemens deal (ongoing) Zungeru power plant (almost completed) Lagos Ibadan railway Lagos Ibadan expressway 2nd Niger Bridge Rice produce reforms Electoral law Start up bill Over 38 new helicopters for Army AKK gas project (ongoing) Sukuk bond Anchors borrowers program N Power
And so on and on and on. Tinubu would continue from this progress base.
VeeVeeMyLuv: my dear the media should be blamed for all these
Their silence shows that they are fully in support of the man and his party
AIT brought this drug matter up in 2014. Tinubu took them to court. It was a serious case and when they saw they may have to pay Billions, they apologised and settled out of court. This is the reason the major media houses today are careful. If you don't have facts you can defend to the latter in court then you thread with caution. The likes of Sahara Reporters or People Gazette are not serious media houses in the eyes of APC so it doesn't matter if they peddle the news.
Lets hope what u are saying is true ,unless common man feel the the impact , i wont trust any body .
Are you a farmer? Farmers are feeling the impact. He has made farmers richer than ever. The only thing they would blame him for was the trouble of bandits in 2021 and early 2022. Apart from that, Buhari has made us more self sufficient in rice farming especially.
Watch this video from a Ghanaian DJ who I normally follow for his funny music reactions, but this time he interviews a Nigerian lady on Nigerian rice revolution where a Ghanaian expert (Abraham Odom) was also invited and became a part of it.
EKONGKING: You r the biggest fool , what's agricultural production u r talking slowpoke. If ur stupid buhari has increased production , why is a bag of of rice increased from 8000 naira to 40000 naira. Do u think all off of us are dumb .
The usual argument:
Why is a bag of rice 40,000 naira?
Well several reasons:
1) Some of our greedy farmers prefer to take all those loans from the Government through the Anchors borrowers program, produce the rice and then export to Francophone countries to make more money thereby creating some form of scarcity.
2) Rice should not have been 8,000 naira in the time of Jonathan but most likely around 20,000 naira then. Jonathan was definitely subsidising some of these imports judging by the price differentials compared to other countries. Remember we were importing almost all of our rice then. This Government has changed that.
3) You can buy rice for 24,000 naira in some places in the north like Gombe.
4) There's almost nowhere in the world a bag of rice is not more than 40,000 naira.
5) Flooding in October increased prices from 30,000 naira to 40,000 naira because even the largest rice farmland in Nassarawa (Olams farm) was completely submerged by flood. Over 25 million dollars worth of investment by Olams gone in October. Several other farmlands across the country were destroyed too.
6) We are still building more rice mills to become fully self sufficient. More rice mills would be commissioned along the way for us to even begin full exports like Thailand. Stay Tuned.
Shma2022: Debt ceiling still stands at 50%. Don't post propaganda.
.
As of June 2022, external debt constituted about 50% of total public debt, up from 45% as of March 2013. The more expensive commercial debt comprised more than 25% of the external debt as of June 2022.
In real terms, the external debt burden has worsened due to the persistent fall in the value of the Kenya shilling and the economic slump that followed the COVID-19 restrictions.
The worsening overall debt burden has prompted the International Monetary Fund to downgrade the country’s debt risk from moderate to high in 2020 just two years after downgrading it from low to moderate in 2018. The downgrade of a country’s debt risk makes it more expensive for the country to borrow, leaving it with less to spend on other economic programmes.
without human intervention, tea will not be produced. Minerals are free gifts. You just need a white man to come and extract it for you, then boom! Dollars left right center. Farming requires human effort; brain and strategy. Farming is part of cerebral-driven economy. Your ZOO; Nigeria, has been extracting oil ("free" gift from nature) for a whopping 70years. I expect Nigeria's poverty rate & economy to be at par with her peers, UAE, and whatnot.
Reduce poverty rate before we can have a conversation. You can't have a huge GDP with low HDI. Focus on human development. Your currency is terrible. You're the disgrace of Africa.
Kenyan total debt(both external & internal) sums up to $72B there about and on a downward trajectory. Nigeria has $68B in external debt alone, which is nearly double that of Kenya. You should get worried about your external debts - since your currency is going to dogs.
Lamba

Save the lecture and export more than tea.
Nigeria has $68B in external debt alone,
Where do you guys get this false information from? Nigeria has a debt of 102 Billion dollars presently. 40 Billion dollars are external and 62 Billion dollars are internal.
Kenya’s newly elected president, William Ruto, has earned more legal space to borrow for his grandiose economic plan after parliament recently raised the country’s public debt ceiling to KSh10 trillion (US$100 billion). The new administration says the country is broke but Kenya is already living beyond its means and the World Bank has warned of a high risk of debt default. We asked Odongo Kodongo, a finance scholar, to explain the debt ceiling and why Kenya needs to pay more attention to it.
hbk001: I can't believe that a seasoned lawyer or a S.A.N can spit out this jargons!!!! Just because of what, for real See, let's start calling a spade a spade so we can really move forward!!! If not criminally related, why should he forfeit?? The last time I checked, only criminals forfeit their money or properties!!! Just like a case of EFCC catching a Yahoo boy, won't he forfeit whatever the proceeds of his crime!!!?
Indeed, if you're a supporter of APC or a member, you lose your sense of reasoning!!!!
Keyamo is really really going on a low on this. It's better to just keep quiet on some issues rather than to please your master/Lord but look stupid in doing so. Such a shame to the Law profession in Nigeria.
The question you should ask yourself is:
Why would the U.S just let him go and not put him in prison? It's like saying Hushpuppi was caught for his crime and the U.S just told him to forfeit and that was all. Does that make sense?
dgr8truth: "It is question of how do you prevent the church rat from eating poison holy communion."
I want to know what is the correlation between this statement and climate change. Is Africa the church rat? Is it not derogatory as well as insulting to call Africa church rat?
Tinubu supporters please educate me.
Yeah Africa is the church rat in this sense because a church rat is said to be poor. Holy Communion is fossil fuel/firewood which is like a desired food for development. But the Holy Communion is poisoned because it can also kill the church rat (by destroying the environment in this case). However, how do you prevent the church rat from going after that much desired Holy Communion? How do you prevent a poor villager from not using firewood?
rvp20182: Ghana the land of the golden stool worth 76 billion copied.. one of the most outrageous bonds out there must be the $1bn lent to Ghana in 2015 at 10.75% interest with a $400m guarantee from the World Bank.A buyer of the bond in 2015 is already guaranteed to get $1.15bn. And they are still 'owed' $1bn, and $860m of interest payments
I believe that was the time Ghana was about going for their last IMF then (if I'm not mistaken), so the interest rate was always going to be outrageously high.
“Anytime you throw your weight behind a party that controls two-thirds of govt but can’t keep the promises it made to you during election & you’re dumb enough to walk around continuing to identify yourself with that party, you’re a chump & a traitor to your people.” - Malcolm X
What is the guarantee the new party you now like would keep the promises they are making to you now? Come on my friend, this is your next president .
rvp20182: Debt management is a lot of things. Where you borrow, the interest rates, the maturity. Kenya has one of Africa best debt management - despite our debt rising lately. For example - compare kenya, nigeria and ghana external debt. See where each borrowed from, for how much, and for how long - and who has pressure.
The pressure shows up in macro-economic indicators like currency, inflation, interest rates. Ghana is literally bursting the seams - and Akosombo is about rapture. Nigeria is not far. Kenya is very stable.
Ghana and Nigeria - most of their external debt is commercial - and as you know (if you do) - govs are not designed to be profitable.
They only become profitable when they grow taxes or revenues. Kenya is doing well there. Ghana and Nigeria are not.
Majority of kenya debt are concessional loans from adb, imf, worldbank, japan, france and china. Those ones can forgive you like they did Nigeria in 2005 - what was that 35B dollars written off. Their debt is more AID.
Now where problems start - Zambia and Ghana - you take eurobonds - and you soon die.
Nigeria actually paid off about 12 Billion dollars then. Not all of the debts were forgiven and it wasn't just Nigeria then. Most African countries and many countries around the world had their debts forgiven. Nigeria also parted with over 12 Billion dollars in addition for the about 30 Billion dollars debt if I'm not mistaken.

If this is true then why do you rank so high in terms of debt unsustainability even in Africa?
36 Billion dollars?? African countries need to learn. You can't go on a borrowing spree like Egypt who have those Arab nations to support them in times of crises. If you want to borrow, first borrow to build projects that would pay for your infrastructure.
gallivant: I was also wondering if the terrorists have allowed Nigerian train operations to resume. Just wondering...
Lol, Nigerian trains (Warri to Itakpe) and (Lagos to Ibadan) have been running. Abuja to Kaduna resumes again soon. Warri to Itakpe would extend to Abuja (work to begin), others on course across the country except Lagos to Calabar which has been halted for now.
