The Mars One foundation announced Tuesday that it has secured lead suppliers for an unmanned mission launching in 2018, which involves a robotic lander and a communications satellite. Lockheed Martin has been contracted to study building the lander, and Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd. will develop a concept study for the satellite, Mars One said.

This first mission will demonstrate technology that would be involved in a permanent human settlement on Mars. If all goes well -- and that's still very much an "if" -- the first pioneers could land on Mars in 2025.

Enthusiasm has been growing since the project's first big announcement in April. More than 200,000 people have signed up to be prospective astronauts, Mars One CEO Bas Lansdorp said in Washington on Tuesday.

Apparently, they're OK with living out the rest of their lives on Mars. The technology for a return flight doesn't exist -- there's no Kennedy Space Center launch pad over there! -- and having a one-way trip greatly reduces costs, the company has said.

The application period is now closed, and by the end of this year, the company plans to notify those special folk who made it to Round 2.

The unmanned mission is the "most important and most difficult step of actually getting humans to Mars," Lansdorp said.

It would also be the first privately funded planetary exploration mission.

"The opportunity to participate in that is just really exciting," said Ed Sedivy, a chief engineer at Lockheed Martin Space Systems

since my arrival in america, light as neva go just for a second. its been 2weeks i came. the roads are well marked with traffic symbols and signs. highly developed society. machines does most of the work here. like washing ur cars, cleaning ur rugs etc. their houses are nt fenced. very tidy and neat environment. very peaceful and well coordinated. u dont queue while u go their offices to do sometin. u will generate a ticket and u will be called base on ur ticket no. the police are on the roads 24hrs to correct u and nt to find faults. truely God bless america. this is where God started his work. here u dont know ur neighbors and ur neighbors dont u. u av no business wt anyone. the only problem is always watch ur back becos u dont who can shoots bt my city as nt recoreded any gun violence. this people had gone far my people in niger. on route to chicago, i sat beside an iraqi woman so i had to exchange my seat becos they wanted to sit together so i sat else where at the isle seat. so dis time around i tank God for nt seating near the window becos i blamed myself seating there. i was quite afraid of lookin at the window. so myself and the family chatted a while asking me my name and i reciprocate as well. it was a food celebration in qatar airline. lots of alcoholic drinks and wines. u will eat as u like. we got to chicago at exactly 3pm. i was to board anoder flight at 4:30pm bt becos of the delay at chicago airport during lots of security checks and wanting to register me into the states, i miss my flight. bt its nt a problem since its nt my fault. i was reschedule to board anoder flight at 7pm. the flight to pittsburgh was wt american airline. very lovely planes. i wish dana ariline, aviation authorities and d host of others should come i see how a local flight looks like. its was a short trip to pittsburgh. it took us just an hour and 20 mins to get to pittsburgh frm chicago. wen we landed i went to pick my luggage and left the airport. my host had alredy been to the airport since i gave him the time i will arrive bt due to the delay he had gone. so i ask a white lady who sat beside me to pls give me her phone to call. so she did becos we met again at the place where we are to pick our luggage. so i called and he ask me to wait outside the airport and dat was wen it dawn on me dat am in the united states of america. i want to tank all members of this great forum for their support. i say to u dat ur generation is blessed for ur sake. i love u gentiger my mentor, edimop my beloved, amedino my soul mate and brother, neroxp, a friend and my great unclesoji. to u all i dove my hat. love u brothers

i tank God the most high, who created evry living tin. i arrived america on 20th sept 2013. BEFORE MY TRIP: WEN I GOT TO THE AIRPOT, those security men did nt allow my family to go in to the main hall. i neva knew they actually wanted a bribe bt i neglected them and i told my people to wait for me to do my boarding. wen tru wt my boarding i went back outside to say good bye amidst in tears. i boarded qatar airline at exactly 2:30pm and i sat at the window side beside one igbo woman who i guessed is goin to dubia. my trip is lagos-doha. doha-chicago then chicago to pittsburgh pennsylvania. I passed tru all immigration screenin at the airport; during that, baba suwe issue came to my mind lol. also i gave one of the police man 10dollars becos i no carry naira again since he was asking me for sometin. ON AIR: wen it was time to bukkle the seat bet, i did nt get it on time so i ask the igbo woman who sat beside me to help. she did honouarbly:i guess its nt her first time on board. so as first timer who is just flying, i prayed for journey mercy and i was quite afraid wen the plane took off. while on air, the woman who sat beside me was just eating while i was quite hoping that we land safely. she ate like 10 times and she was visiting the toilet often. this is nt an exaggration. so i ate just some of the tins that dey served as i was pondering over my people i left in nigeria. we landed safetly at doha. so i met a nigeria lady during the stop over, we were together that night and she too was goin to america. so we are to board same flight to us. we went to stay in one of the halls in doha. wat a beautiful ariport. wen i got to doha i wept for my country becos of the level of development i saw. at exactly 8am, we boarded the flight that took us to chicago. its a very long flight that took us 12hrs on air.
