The Benue State House of Assembly wants Apa and two other states created out of the present Benue. The others are Benue and Katsina-Ala. The proposed states represent the three senatorial zones of Benue North-West, Benue North-East and Benue-South. Apa comes from the Idoma speaking area of Benue South. The others are from Tivland. The demand for Apa State has generated a serious interest among those who believe in equity and justice, as no Idoma person has ever been governor of the present Benue State, despite their continued loyalty and support for every government in the state. The Idomas have a strong agricultural and mineral resource base e.g.; (Owukpa coal mine) and produces highly productive but largely humble people. They lost the state by the whiskers when new states were created by late General Sani who created Nasarawa out of North Central, same zone as Apa. Benue House Speaker, Terseer Tsumba who read the communiqué from last week’s summit on the review of the 1999 constitution yesterday in Makurdi said the document contained the official position of the state. Source: Dailytrust Opinion With the spate each tribe is demanding for its own separate state, we might end up creating more than 200 states if the quest for the creation of tribal/ethnic based state is not put off. |
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has cautioned the Police against taking provocative actions as the central labour union leads workers in Lagos today to kick off a series of peaceful rallies which it said are aimed to protest certain “obnoxious” policies of government. NLC has for some time now been protesting against government’s decision to deregulate the oil and gas sector as well as government’s position on Justice Mohammed Lawal Uwais’ recommendations on electoral reform. It said the rally is meant to educate members of the National Assembly on the need to abide by the collective will of Nigerians when government’s white paper is presented to it. Speaking to Daily Trust yesterday, NLC’s General Secretary Comrade John Odah said previous rallies had been peaceful and there was no way today’s rally would be violent if the Police behave well. He said, “Our history has shown that where the Police did not go out of their way to promote crisis, people had always peacefully exercised their rights to exercise their views in a very peaceful way and we are determined that this action is a popular action and people should just come and express their views. “We have had rallies in the past. In 2006, we trekked from National Stadium to Alausa, a distance of over 82 kilometres and there wasn’t a single incident of hoodlums taking over the action. We don’t think there should be any crisis there.” Odah said NLC is aware that only the National Assembly can make the required changes, “but this rally will show where Nigerians stand on the issue.” He made this statement against call by the Federal Government for people not satisfied with its position go to the National Assembly and express their views. “Of course we are not daft, we know that it is the National Assembly that makes laws, so what is the problem with that? People should have the freedom to peacefully express their views and that is what we are trying to do. This is an action which is intended to make the members of the National Assembly know that the wish of Nigerians is that the key aspects of the recommendations of the Uwais Committee should be accepted.” On the membership of labour in the committee on deregulation, he said that “we have openly expressed our opposition to the deregulation; even if we are in the committee that will not stop us from going ahead to express our opposition to it.” In a statement in Abuja yesterday, NLC’s Head of Information Owei Lakemfa said no agreement had been reached with government to avert the strike. He said, ``These claims are incorrect. NLC in a letter to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) on December 3, 2008 asked Government as a matter of urgency to establish a tripartite committee. We said the committee should be composed of Labour, employers and government representation to negotiate a new minimum wage. This has yet to be done. ``To us, the issue of pay rise for workers in the country is fundamental given spiralling inflation and excruciating poverty, which have made it impossible for workers to meet their basic needs. ``Labour reiterates that its nationwide rallies, which begin from the NLC Office in Tejuosho, Lagos, on Wednesday morning, May 13, 2009, will go on as scheduled.’’ For his part, Police Inspector-General Mike Okiro yesterday directed Commissioners of Police across states of the federation to insist on written undertaking of peaceful conduct from the protesters. A statement signed by Okiro’s Principal Staff Officer, Commissioner of Police Austin Obaedo said “the attention of the Inspector-General of Police has been drawn to the impending strike action to be embarked upon by Labour/NUPENG-PENGASSAN and other civil societies to protest against government deregulation of the petroleum sector on Wednesday, 13th May, 2009. Source: Dailytrust I fully support this protest and if possible to should bring all general activities to a halt so that the government of day can come back to their senses. |

yicob:Bros you are quick to judge here. We have different types of tax in Nigeria. The question is why do Nigerians (excluding private/multinational organizations) need to pay tax? Honestly am patiently waiting for your answers. Aliens like the Vaswani Brothers connived with corrupt top custom officials by evading tax meant for this country. |

Reuters - May 7, 2009 2:04 PM PDT NEW YORK (Reuters) - TV star Kiefer Sutherland was arrested by New York police on Thursday and charged with assault for headbutting another man. The star of hit television show "24" turned himself in to a police station in the Manhattan neighborhood of Soho and faces a minor assault charge for "headbutting", according to a police spokeswoman. Several media outlets reported that Sutherland is accused of assaulting fashion designer Jack McCollough at a Monday night party after an annual costume gala held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. A representative for the actor, who is serving five years probation on a drunken driving charge in Los Angeles, did not return a call for comment. The Manhattan District Attorney's office had no comment. A criminal charge, even a minor one, could have harsh consequences for the 42-year-old actor, who plays tough-minded special agent Jack Bauer on the TV thriller "24." Source: Reuters

Friday, 08 May 2009 The Executive Secretary of National Universities Commission (NUC) Professor Julius Okojie said has suggested that students in government universities should pay N150,000 as minimum tuition fee per annum. Professor Okojie while speaking on the forthcoming “Forum on Financing Higher Education in Nigeria,” said it was erroneous for people to hold the view that funding education must be left to government alone. “The future of university education is the private universities. Most of the institutions that are making wave outside this country are privately-owned or funded by faith-based institutions and people are paying and attending them. For example out of about 2,600 universities in the United States of America (USA), close to 2000 are privately-owned and they are doing better than the public ones. “Given the cost of running universities and even the amount that are paid in some secondary schools, I think Nigerians should change their attitude towards government owned institutions. At least N150, 000 which is just about $1000 should be the minimum amount students should pay for a year,” he said. SOURCE: DAILY TRUST OPINION Its part of the "re-branding" abi? Although its a proposal ![]() |

my brother, let her talk. i'll bet u right now she's sitting in a room with a/c with most likely the gen running. she was born wit a silver spoon in her mouth and has 24hrs access to light, diesel, water, petrol and probably has a helicopter to take her to school and back so she doesn't have to experience what everyone else does. if she did, she wouldn't say what she was saying.Bros its true. She doesn't have the slightest idea of what we are talking about. Pls we are just joking don't sit under the sun for 4hrs coz nairaland is not ready to loose you now |

@texazzpete On the way to my office this morning, the roads were blocked with vehicles. People has formed 4 lanes on a 2-lane road, blocking oncoming traffic and making the situation extremely chaotic. Why argue that the Government must build more roads and bridges whereas the existing ones are rendered impassable due to the actions of stupid and impatient Nigerians?Whether we like it or not poor leadership is the bane of our problem in this country? A good example of good leadership was demontrated by the Lagos State govt recently by removing illegal structures and hawkers from Oshodi market. In my life l never thought that could be done but behold we all saw and witnessed it. If the government demontrates good examples, the ppl of Nigeria will have no alternative than to obey. The ever growing impatience of Nigerians when it comes to queuing is as a result of the hopeless situation poor and innocent Nigerians have found themselves in over the years. In a nutshell, there is nothing that can stop a good govt from achieving a set goal/objective if its willing, committed and have the interest of the majority at heart. As a tax payer, i easily blame NEPA for not providing power. At the same time i'd be silly not to blame the millions of Nigerians that do not pay NEPA bills, that rely on illegal connections to tap electricity. I also will heap a hefty portion of the blame on those millitants that routinely blow up gas pipelines, reducing the feedstock to our gas powered generating plants. And these are ordinary Nigerians, not our 'leaders'.You raised the issue of NEPA/PHCN. Pls don't talk about that becoz before the advent of the pre-paid meter, NEPA/PHCN have reaped off innocent Nigerians. We pay monthly NEPA/PHCN bill yet no power, you cannot pay for what u're given. Apart from KWARA STATE now no NIGERIAN under the age of 40yrs WILL TELL YOU THAT HE/SHE HAS EXPERIENCED 48HRS uninterrupted power supply. If the govt of the day cannot improve on the basic social amenities, l don't see the reason why l should pay tax. If you are living in UK/US u'll enjoy paying your bills because those basic social things are provided to you 24/7 as such you don't have any reason whatsoever not to pay. |
if ordinary Nigerians could have had the courage to perform basic first aid.Courage is slim in a state of hopelessness, poverty and hunger |
Are they that many people queuing up for Visas to the US/UK in those countries?u knw better. ![]() |
