A demonstration organized by city youth to protest incessant power outage turned violent in Zaria yesterday with four people reported dead while another 20 people sustained injuries and are receiving treatment at the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Shika. Daily Trust learnt that the fatalities occurred when the police fired at the demonstrators at Muchiya and Chikaji areas of Sabon Gari local government in Zaria city. Witnesses told Daily Trust that the youth in the area mobilized in their hundreds to protest alleged extortion by PHCN officials and rampant disconnection of their power sources, which they said left them without electricity for about a week. Daily Trust learnt that the mob went about harassing motorists and passers-by who refused to show solidarity with them. Matters soon got out of hand when Alhaji Kasimu Abubakar, the chairman of Sabon Gari local government, arrived at the scene and attempted to pacify the demonstrators. The space shuttle Atlantis has landed in California, where it was diverted after continuing stormy weather prevented a Florida touchdown. Atlantis landed at 1539 GMT at Edwards Air Force Base. Officials had aborted Saturday's planned landing at the Kennedy Space Center for the second consecutive day. The seven astronauts on board Atlantis have taken part in an ambitious and risky mission to service and re-fit the Hubble telescope. Nasa said that weather conditions over Florida forced flight controllers to give up on Sunday's first landing opportunity at Kennedy Space Center. Hubble revamped Atlantis's mission was intended to give a new lease of life to Hubble. The orbiting observatory is regarded as one of the most important scientific tools ever built. The fifth and final mission to service Hubble has been hailed as a great success. Over five spacewalks, astronauts installed new instruments and thermal blankets, repaired two existing instruments, replaced gyroscopes and batteries. The only disappointment was the failure to restore the high resolution channel (one of three) on the Advanced Camera for Surveys, which has been responsible for many of Hubble's most impressive images of deep space. "This is not the end of the story but the beginning of another chapter of discovery by Hubble," said Ed Weiler, associate administrator for Science at Nasa Headquarters. "Hubble will be more powerful than ever, continue to surprise, enlighten, and inspire us all and pave the way for the next generation of observatories." |
I don't know what we are celebrating if you honestly ask me. They are suppose to sit down and think of how they can move this country forward rather than spending our money. God go punish this shameless "polithiefians" |

United Bank for Africa Plc has inaugurated cash deposit automated teller machines. The banking service, which would enable customers to make cash lodgements to their accounts via ATM machines, was unveiled in Lagos on Friday. This followed the successful deployment of the intelligent cheque deposit ATMs in November last year thus making it possible for the bank to provide round the clock access to cash and cheque deposits. The cash deposit ATM recognises the Nigerian currency, accepts all N100, N200, N500 and N1,000 denominations of the naira notes and is capable of detecting counterfeit or effaced cash through the multi-level security features. Opinion Trust me this latest machine will seize your cash and deny you lodgement receipt. |
Former Head of State retired General Abdulsalami Abubakar is to be questioned by the special investigation panel on the Halliburton bribery scandal, in which some top former public officers allegedly received $180 million in bribes to facilitate gas contracts for the American energy firm. Police Force Public Relations Officer Emmanuel Ojukwu, an Assistant Commissioner of Police, told Daily Trust last night that Abubakar and a number of other key government officials in his administration would be invited to testify in the investigation. A Halliburton subsidiary, KBR, recently admitted to funnelling bribes totalling $180 million to yet-to-be-named top Nigerian government officials to facilitate the award of gas contracts. The bribes were allegedly given between 1994 and 2004, during the regimes of the late General Sani Abacha, Abdulsalami and Chief Olusegun Obasanjo. The Federal Government early this month set up a special committee headed by Inspector-General of Police Mike Okiro to investigate the bribery scandal. The panel has so far arrested a number of former top public officers, including former chief of air staff retired Air Marshal Abdul Dominc Bello and former federal permanent secretary Ibrahim Aliyu. The committee also reportedly quizzed former Inspector-General of Police Mohammed Dikko Yusufu and former Minister of State for Petroleum Dr. Edmund Daukoru. God go catch these mugus one after another. |

Mai Suya:Divide simply because of Crude oil. The question is how do we divide this country because at the end of the day on tribe would still dominate the other. |
These Boys or Militants as they call themselves were given amnesty to give up their arms, stop militancy, oil bunkering, kidnapping and other criminal activities, yet they refused. The issue of the military clamping down on the militants is long overdue. Certain group of people cannot fight the government, it did not work out in Sri Lanka, Angola, Pakistan etc so l don't see the reason why this militants can hold over 140,000,000 people to ransom. |

Members of the Nigerian National Assembly in charge of investigating the country's electricity crisis have been charged with fraud. The 10 MPs denied charges of siphoning off $42m (£27m) of public funds in a hearing that stretched over two days. Each of the defendants had to rise 130 times to answer "not guilty". The MPs had looked into why there was so little to show for the $16bn (£11bn) of investment in the power sector under former President Olusegun Obasanjo. Their report implicated the ex-president, but a second panel set up to look at their findings recently cleared him and others in charge of power generation between 1999 and 2007 of the allegations. Senator Nicholas Ugbade - chairman of Senate Committee on Power - his House of Representatives counterpart Ndudi Elumelu and eight other MPs are accused of taking money from the Central Bank meant for local power projects. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says that in December 2008, just after they concluded their investigation into the power sector, the MPs funnelled the cash into a range of front companies. They deny the charges. At the time of the investigation some commentators said it was part of a series of probes into the recently retired President Obasanjo which amounted to a "witch hunt". But the probe painted a damning picture of the country's management of electricity generation over the last 10 years. Experts testified to the committee that expensive turbines were rotting in Nigerian ports because the people who ordered them had no way of transporting the heavy equipment to the site of the power station. The committee heard that other turbines were installed, but no-one had planned how they would be fuelled with gas as the country had sold all its supply for the next 16 years to international oil and gas companies. The committee also uncovered several shady deals between high-ranking politicians and private companies where they failed to build contracted power stations. 'Never seen light' But local media has reported that the panel reviewing that investigation concluded there was no money missing, as the Central Bank still held letters of credit meant for the contracts. The second report, yet to be made public or debated by the House of Assembly, accuses the authors of the previous investigation of holding "personal vendettas" against the former president. Nigeria generates less than 1,000 megawatts (MW) for a population of 140 million. In large cities blackouts are a daily occurrence, and some areas have "never seen light" as people say in Nigerian pidgin. Those who can afford it rely on generators. Large scale business and industry in the country is almost impossible because of the power generation problem, correspondents say. NIGERIA ELECTRICITY FACTS Currently generates less than 1,000MW down from 3,500MW in 2008 Nigeria wants to generate 6,000MW by the end of 2009 In 12 years it wants to be able to generate 20,000MW Would need 100,000MW to become an industrialised economy, according to the ex-president Six power stations begun under the last administration have not been completed $16bn has so far been spent on the power sector since 1999 http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/8051602.stm |

A man, Mallam Sani Maje yesterday appeared before a Jigawa Chief Magistrate’s Court for allegedly impregnating his 13-yr-old sister in-law, Rahma Abdullahi. Magistrate Mustapha Tijjani fixed 17th of June 2009 for continuation of the case and ruling on an application applied by the prosecution’s counsel seeking a court order to take blood sample of the accused person for DNA test. Magistrate Tijjani also ordered the prosecution’s counsel, Corporal Danladi to present to the court his written reply on the DNA application on or before the 28th of this month. The court further ordered for the continuation of the accused person’s bail application. Earlier, the prosecution counsel, Corporal Danladi applied to the court seeking an order to take the blood sample of the accused person for the test. Danladi told the court, “Only the DNA test can solve the matter because by conducting the test, the result will clearly show whether the accused person is guilty of the charges leveled against him or not. I therefore apply for an order in that respect”. But the defence counsel, Barrister Baffa Alasan objected to the application, saying “Such is a violation of section 36 (11) of 1999 constitution, which stated that no person who is accused of a criminal offence shall be compelled to give evidence at a trail”. Barrister Baffa stated that by giving room for such a test, the accused person’s right to silence would be violated. He therefore urged the court to discard the application. Maje was reported to the police in Birnin-Kudu Local Government by the victim’s parent on 16 February this year for allegedly impregnating Rahama. It was also alleged that the accused person started raping the girl at the age of 10. Source: DailyTrust The court should order for the castration of his "pipe" since he cannot control it |

For over one month or so now India has been conducting their election without any hitch. There was no record of cock fighting/ chasing each other, no movement of soldiers/troops, the Indian election system is worthy of emulation. This Indian general marathon election was devoid of intimidation, ballot paper snatching, political thuggery, etc that characterize our naija form of democracy. India is run by a parliament made up of two houses, (similar to the United States Congress, which comprises the Senate and the House of Representatives). These two houses are called the LOK SABHA, or "House of the People," and the RAJYA SABHA, or "Council of States." Of the two, the Lok Sabha holds more power, but the two houses work together to make the laws of the country. The parliament is located in India's capital, New Delhi. With a billion people, the Republic of India is the world's largest democracy. With a population nearly four times that of the United States, India modeled its government on the British parliamentary system, with a healthy dose of influences from the United States and the rest of Europe INDIAN ELECTION AT A GLANCE Eligible voters: 714 million Polling centres: 828,804 Voting days: 16, 23, 30 April; 7, 13 May Vote counting: 16 May Leading candidates: Manmohan Singh (Congress), LK Advani (BJP), Mayawati ("Third front" ![]() May God help this country!!! |
