Newly re-elected Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, while expressing his gratitude to party leaders, including Bisi Akande and Olusegun Osoba, as well as the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) for their role in his return to office, mistakenly called Media, members of the fifth Columnist.

Following his swearing-in, Obasa announced the indefinite adjournment of the Assembly, signaling a pause in legislative activities.

In January, the lawmakers impeached Obasa over multiple allegations, including poor leadership style, high-handedness, frequent lateness to plenary sessions, abuse of office, and intimidation of colleagues.

Speaking during the plenary session today, he thanked the lawmaker while calling for unity and love.


He said, “We want to assure Lagosians that we have resolved and determined to serve their interest and protect their interest always. Our major responsibility is to represent them and what we have been doing.

“What is happening here today shows that the Lagos State House of Assembly is capable and is a House of integrity. It is a house that internal mechanism to resolve in the interest of the institution and our party.

While reacting to the Supreme Court’s ruling which nullified the local government elections and also ordered that the Martin Amaewhule-led group resume sitting, the governor maintained that the future holds greater promise than the past and that he is not afraid to pay the ultimate sacrifice for Rivers State people.

He pledged to complete his tenure with honour and integrity, ensuring that his decisions remain defensible.

Fubara also emphasized the need to counter political propaganda with evidence of purposeful governance, citing the ongoing inauguration of state projects as a testament to his administration’s commitment to progress.

He stated that the newly commissioned project was designed to enhance work efficiency among public servants in government houses.

The Nigerian Ambassadors for Gender Tranquility (NAGET), has called for the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan over her allegations of sexual harassment against the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio.

The President of the group, Elijah Tule, who made the call at press briefing on Sunday in Abuja said the call became necessary because Senator Natasha has refused to abide by a simple Senate rule that every Senator is bound to respect, thereby, breaking the rule and going a step forward to try to blackmail the man vested with the power to correct her and protect the rules of the Senate.

According to him, the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio has never been in the news for harassing any woman in the past, this makes it very difficult to successfully lie against him in this fashion

“It is unconscionable that our dear Senator Natasha would refuse to abide by a simple Senate rule that every Senator is bound to respect, thereby, breaking the rule and going a step forward to try to blackmail the man vested with the power to correct her and protect the rules of the Senate”.

To this end, the group demanded that, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan withdraws her spurious allegations against the person of the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio or face the wrath of all well meaning Nigerians.

That, having grossly violated the rules of the Senate and further desecrated the Seat of the Senate President, she be suspended from the Senate until she retracts her allegations and tenders an unreserved apology to the Senate President.

“Finally, it’s alleged Sen. Natasha’s best game is blackmail. Though this allegation is not independently confirmed, we will be forced to dig deeper if the Honourable Senator does not apologise and desist from lying to dent the hard earned reputation of Sen. Godswill Akpabio”, he said.

However, there are criteria to be met for defection to be acceptable by law.


With that said, the 27 Rivers legislators are for whatever reason claiming they didn't defect. That case is in court and hasn't been determined yet.
So until the court passes a judgment contrary to their claim, they are still valid members of the House of Assembly.

Kenneth Okonkwo, a Nigerian actor, lawyer and politician has accused the Nigerian Supreme Court of inconsistency, while breaking down the recent ruling in rivers state crisis.

Recall that the Supreme Court on Friday ruled that the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Accountant-General of the Federation must halt the release of funds to the Rivers State Government until the Rivers House of Assembly is properly constituted in line with the 1999 Constitution.

The apex court also affirmed the Martins Amaewhule-led Rivers House of Assembly members as the valid lawmakers.

A five-member panel of the Supreme Court, in a unanimous decision delivered by Justice Emmanuel Akomaye Agim, declared that no funds should be disbursed to the Rivers State Government until a lawful Appropriation Act is enacted in the state.

Justice Agim specifically upheld the judgment of the Federal High Court, which barred the allocation of funds to the state government.

Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court in Abuja had, on October 24, 2024, issued an order preventing the Central Bank of Nigeria from further disbursing monthly financial allocations to the Rivers State Government.

In her ruling, the judge also barred the Accountant-General of the Federation, Zenith Bank, and Access Bank, where the state holds accounts, from releasing funds to the government.

Justice Abdulmalik ruled that Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s receipt and use of the state’s monthly allocations since January 2024 constituted a violation of the Constitution that could not be permitted to continue.

She also condemned Governor Fubara’s presentation of the 2024 budget to a four-member Rivers House of Assembly, stating that it was a direct violation of constitutional requirements.

Delivering judgment on the appeal brought before it by the 27 lawmakers, Justice Agim overturned the Court of Appeal ruling that had nullified the Federal High Court judgment on jurisdictional grounds and restored the trial court’s decision.

He declared, “The judgment of the Federal High Court is hereby affirmed.”
The Supreme Court further ruled, “The Rivers State allocation fund is to be withheld until the unconstitutional actions are rectified.”

Referring to the Appeal Court judgment that criticised Fubara for presenting the 2024 budget before only four Assembly members, Justice Akomaye likened the governor’s actions to “bigamy.”

The court reaffirmed that the presentation of the 2024 budget before four out of 31 members of the House of Assembly was unconstitutional and, therefore, void.

The Supreme Court has overturned the October 5, 2024, local government election in Rivers State, declaring it null and void. In a unanimous ruling on Friday, a five-member panel of the Supreme Court upheld an appeal by the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Supreme Court overturned a November 21, 2024, Court of Appeal ruling in Abuja that had upheld the election results.

In the lead judgment delivered by Jamilu Tukurt, the Supreme Court ruled that there was no evidence proving that the conditions outlined in Section 150(3) of the Electoral Act were met before the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) conducted the elections.

On September 30, Federal High Court Judge Peter Lifu barred INEC from releasing the voter register to RSIEC. He also issued an order restraining the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and other security agencies from providing security for the elections.

However, on November 21, a special panel of the Court of Appeal, led by Justice Onyekachi Otisi, ruled that the lower court lacked jurisdiction to hear the case, stating that local government election matters should not have been brought before the high court.

The Supreme Court has now overturned that decision, reinstating the Federal High Court’s ruling and nullifying the election. The panel ruled that issues concerning local government elections should not have been presented before the high court.

Former Rivers State Governor and Current Minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike has said Governor Sim Fubara can now appeal to God following his supreme court defeat.


“You took an oath to abide by the Constitution, but you came out to say the court’s judgment is corrupt. Thank God, today, the Supreme Court has said it all—go back and follow the law,” he said.

The Supreme Court justices expressed concern over the rising trend of executive overreach, warning that undermining the legislature threatens democracy.

“Government cannot function without one of its three arms. The governor’s illegal actions cannot be justified,” Justice Agim ruled.

The court also ordered that the Clerk and Deputy Clerk of the Rivers Assembly, who were unlawfully removed, be reinstated along with other legislative staff.

Justice Agim criticised the governor for using his constitutional immunity under Section 308 to justify his actions, stating, “This is an act of indiscipline born out of executive power. This is a joke taken too far.”

The Supreme Court imposed a ₦5 million fine against Fubara and reaffirmed the 27 lawmakers as the rightful members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

Wike, while praising the judiciary, commended his legal team for their efforts in securing the ruling.

“We must commend the judiciary for being bold and firm in saying no to impunity,” he added.
