https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ygn3TGSp2pc The Supreme Court has overturned the October 5, 2024, local government election in Rivers State, declaring it null and void. In a unanimous ruling on Friday, a five-member panel of the Supreme Court upheld an appeal by the All Progressives Congress (APC). The Supreme Court overturned a November 21, 2024, Court of Appeal ruling in Abuja that had upheld the election results. In the lead judgment delivered by Jamilu Tukurt, the Supreme Court ruled that there was no evidence proving that the conditions outlined in Section 150(3) of the Electoral Act were met before the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) conducted the elections. On September 30, Federal High Court Judge Peter Lifu barred INEC from releasing the voter register to RSIEC. He also issued an order restraining the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and other security agencies from providing security for the elections. However, on November 21, a special panel of the Court of Appeal, led by Justice Onyekachi Otisi, ruled that the lower court lacked jurisdiction to hear the case, stating that local government election matters should not have been brought before the high court. The Supreme Court has now overturned that decision, reinstating the Federal High Court’s ruling and nullifying the election. The panel ruled that issues concerning local government elections should not have been presented before the high court. |

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xG9RlTLXFvs Former Rivers State Governor and Current Minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike has said Governor Sim Fubara can now appeal to God following his supreme court defeat. “You took an oath to abide by the Constitution, but you came out to say the court’s judgment is corrupt. Thank God, today, the Supreme Court has said it all—go back and follow the law,” he said. The Supreme Court justices expressed concern over the rising trend of executive overreach, warning that undermining the legislature threatens democracy. “Government cannot function without one of its three arms. The governor’s illegal actions cannot be justified,” Justice Agim ruled. The court also ordered that the Clerk and Deputy Clerk of the Rivers Assembly, who were unlawfully removed, be reinstated along with other legislative staff. Justice Agim criticised the governor for using his constitutional immunity under Section 308 to justify his actions, stating, “This is an act of indiscipline born out of executive power. This is a joke taken too far.” The Supreme Court imposed a ₦5 million fine against Fubara and reaffirmed the 27 lawmakers as the rightful members of the Rivers State House of Assembly. Wike, while praising the judiciary, commended his legal team for their efforts in securing the ruling. “We must commend the judiciary for being bold and firm in saying no to impunity,” he added. |

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1L-MkhoR00 Human rights activist and lawyer, Femi Falana “And the last one is about this their they want to set up a library. No former military Head of State has ever set up a library. What do you want to read there? You can only have a library set up by an elected president. So I hope they will title it well, it should be the ‘former military president library. “It shouldn’t just be a presidential library because you will confuse people. There’s nothing like a military president. You can’t have a military president because a president is elected by the people. “He said in the book that why he chose the title president is that he did it in line with the suspended provision of the constitution, that suspended provision did not recognize the military dictator. Every officer under that constitution must be elected.” |

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q48K7gTzK-s The Senate President has said that a class captain has power within his right to separate two friends that always talk during class and move their seats apart. Recall that Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents the Kogi Central Senator will now face senate disciplinary panel over her seat reallocation outburst in the red chamber. The Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced this on the floor of the Senate, saying a motion to that regard has referred the matter to its Ethics, Code of Conduct and Public Petitions committee. The Senate President said: “There’s a motion before us that we should refer the entirety of the saga to our Ethics, Code of Conduct and Public Petitions, and then to revert back to us. But let me just read this for the record, even the first time the issue came up here our distinguished sister was not even speaking from her seat. And that was, that was when we tried to call her to order.” |

https://youtube.com/shorts/ld2yiR7F6IY?feature=share VIDEO: Drama in Senate as Akpabio orders suspension of Senator Natasha over seating arrangement A heated drama erupted in the Senate on Thursday, February 20, as Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central engaged in a shouting match after discovering that her seat had been changed without her consent. The plenary session, presided over by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, was ongoing when Chief Whip Senator Mohammed Ali Monguno raised a point of order concerning Natasha’s seating position. As Monguno made his submission, Natasha interjected forcefully, demanding explanations for the change. “Why was my seat moved without my consent?” she queried, refusing to be silenced. The altercation escalated, prompting Akpabio to order the Sergeant-at-Arms to remove her from the plenary. However, Natasha resisted, standing her ground and defiantly declaring, “I am not afraid of you, and I will not be silenced." The lawmaker also accused Akpabio of sidelining her, stating that she had been denied several opportunities to present bills for a second reading since their last confrontation. Efforts to restore order proved challenging, with tensions running high. The situation was eventually brought under control when the public address systems were shut down, allowing proceedings to resume. The incident underscores ongoing tensions in the upper legislative chamber and raises questions about the Senate's internal dynamics under Akpabio’s leadership. https://www.pulse.ng/articles/news/senate-suspends-natasha-over-seating-drama-2025022013445931577 |
