well to be frank , i am confused as to the so called single engine fighter jets acquisition LWF program.
open source info tells that it is a "restricted RFI" what the govt. is trying to do is not clear , what their main goal is i dont know.
IAF chief Mr. Raha said they had received “unsolicited” offers on F-16, F-18 and Gripen aircraft. “It is on the table, nothing is decided as yet,” he said.
Detailing on the idea of having another aircraft production line in India, Mr. Raha said that “it will not be license manufacture”. “It will be proper transfer of technology so that we have good share of the technology that is utilised in this aircraft and also India will become a hub for manufacturing as well as Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO).”
The MRO, he said, should become a hub for other aircraft in the region and also service “other Air Forces which operate the aircraft.”
so what i know the main idea is to replace the MIG21 MIG27 at the earliest, but the question is how ? 1.if F16/Gripen F is selected by 2017 then first aircraft will role out by 2023 only under MII program, which is too late 2.LCA MK2 should also be available by 2023/24 same as above 3.same for F18
IAF future composition kind of , i left out some fighters
HWF - SU-30MKIs (SUPER SU-30MKIs ), FGFA (PAKFA)
MWF - M2K-UPGRADED, MIG-29 SMT, JAGUARs-UPGRADED, RAFALEs , AMCA
LWF - LCA MK1A, LCA MK2, ?
So if the new LFW is post 2024, does it make any sense unless it is a 5th generation fighter replacing the legacy MIG ? This is where 5 gen LSA (light stealth aircraft ) program makes sense.
also The LCA MK2 isn't simply a MK.1A with the indigenous UTTAM AESA radar fitted in place of the EL/M-2052. The MK2 is a substantial redesign of the the LCA MK.1A with increased wingspan, internal fuel capacity, up-rated engine, improved EW systems and avionics.
Now with the tech coming from the Rafale deal and with French help the LCA MK2 can be further optimised as a significant step up on the LCA MK1A and can truly eclipse the Gripen E/F as far as India's needs are concerned.
the LWF is not meant to be an uber fighter meant to excel in every domain as the country's premier fighter. This is how the Gripen is marketed to smaller airforces but where the IAF is concerned their LWF is a rear guard point defence fighter that would protect Indian airspace/gains to release the "heavies" (MKI, FGFA, Rafale, AMCA) to prosecute targets deep(er) in enemy territory and take the fight to them. On a day to day basis the LWF will be utilised primarily in air policing roles negating the need for the far more expensive to fly twin engined fighters leaving them in their hangers/training for combat.
also there is a constant vicious cycle of trying to kill the LCA program both from external and internal agencies.
all in all right now as far as i an concerned it is a circus without a ringmaster
but if i was in charge i would induct LCAMK1A then LCAMK2 and concurrently develop 5 gen LSA (light stealth aircraft) based on inputs under the RAFALE TOT deal OK just hope maintenance headache would not choke ur airforce |

nemesis2u: S-400 Triumf LR-SAMs Arriving By 2018-20 For Limited TMD, Plus Six SSNs & Four Batch 3 Project 1135.6 FFGs
As per the IAF’s projections, there exists a requirement for 12 Batteries of the JSC Almaz-Antey-built S-400 (each Battery using four TELs each housing four cannister-encased LR-SAMs), plus five long-range early warning/tracking radars (LRTR). In other words, as per the IAF’s appreciation, a total of FIVE strategic sectors in northern, western and southern India are urgently required to be protected against conventionally armed inbound TBMs and IRBMs like Pakistan’s solid-fuelled single-stage M-11 (Hatf-3/Ghaznavi//DF-11) 280km-range TBMs, and liquid-fuelled single-stage Hatf-5/Ghauri-1/Nodong-1.
Next on the shopping list will be the five LRTRs which, in all probability, will be the EL/M-2090U UHF-band active phased-array systems from Israel Aerospace Industries’ ELTA Systems subsidiary.
It may be recalled that when the MoD-owned DRDO began R & D work in 1996 on a home-grown TMD system, it had ordered two EL/M-2080 ‘Green Pine’ active phased-array L-band LRTRs in late 1998 from IAI/ELTA for target acquisition-cum-engagement, plus a TMD simulation testbed from Israel’s Tadiran Electronic Systems.
Following their deliveries in 2001, the DRDO began co-developing the applications software for a terrestrial TMD architecture and its distributed command-and-control network at a laboratory in Yalavara, Karnataka.
Another inter-governmental agreement (IGA) to be inked in Goa as part of a secret annexure of the contract for building Units 3 and 4 of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP) concerns the in-country construction of six 5,000-tonne, fifth-generation attack submarines (SSN) designed by the St Petersburg-based FSUE Central Design Bureau RUBIN for Marine Technology. SSNs of this design, powered by 60mWt (about 25mWe) high-density integral pressurised water reactors (PWR), will also enter service with the Russian Navy in the following decade.
It may be recalled the IGA that India and Russia Atomstroyexport signed on November 20, 1988 for the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP) officially involved the construction of two 1,000MWe Russian VVER-1000-type light water reactors (at a cost of US$3.5 billion) at Kudankulam in Tirunelveli district in Tamil Nadu State. However, a secret annexure of this contract also called for Moscow to offer its ‘consultancy’ and ‘vendor-development’ services, along with the supply of two KLT-40C PWR mock-ups (built by Afrikantov OKBM and designed to deliver 23.5mWe from the 82.5mWt reactor and using 45% enriched uranium-aluminium alloy, clad in zircaloy), their related heat exchangers and steam generators, plus their detailed engineering drawings off-the-shelf—all for the S-2/Arihant, S-3 and S-4 SSBNs, and similar military-industrial assistance for building the larger S-5, S-6 and S-7 SSBNs, also designed by FSUE Central Design Bureau RUBIN for Marine Technology.
Of the four Batch 3 Project 1135.6 FFGs for the IN, the first two will be built by Kaliningrad-based JSC Yantar Shipyard, while the remaining two will be licence-built by Gujrat-based Reliance Defence and Engineering Ltd (RDEL), formerly Pipavav Defence and Offshore EngineeringCompany Ltd (PDOECL).
All 3 Gregorivich FFGs built to date at JSC Yantar are already salining with their own power, i.e. they already have on-board propulsion systems & all their photos are available on-line. The 4 for India will be new-build ones & will have all non-Russian systems that are already on board the 2 Batch 2 Project 1135.6 FFGs. During the construction of the first 2 Batch 3 FFGs, the workforce from Reliance Defence and Engineering Ltd will be at Yantar for acquiring the skills necessary for building the two follow-on FFGs back in India. In future, this Pipabav-based shipyard will also do all mid-life refit work on the 3 Batch 1 & 3 Batch 2 Project 1135.6 FFGs already in service with the IN. In addition, the periodic refits of INS Vikramaditya will also be done at Pipavav.
The version to be procured will suffice for tackling the TBM & IRBM mentioned above. The hypersonic 77N6-N and the 77N6-NI missiles that the IAF wants to counter the Shaheen-1/2 & DF-21-type MRBMs are not yet available. So the S-400s meant for delivery to the IAF will make use of SAMs like the 40N6E, the 9M96E2, the 48N6E3 and the 48N6E2.
it wont be a stopgap measure because the Russia will deliver the 77N6-N and the 77N6-N1 missiles after their R & D cycles have been completed. In addition, don't forget that the S-400 sales campaign wasn't done just by the Russia, but by the Israelis as well, since there will be a sizeable Israeli industrial input as well. All that the Russia therefore have to do is to work with the DRDO to make the S-400 LR-SAMs 'adaptable' to the DRDO-Israel developed command-and-control network. In addition, as far as early warning goes, it is Israel that has been collaborating with ISRO for co-developing new-generation mini-satellites with dedicated optronic or SAR sensors. Up to 12 such mini-satellites can be launched by ISRO during any national emergency by a PSLV launcher & these mini-satellites will be low-cost, i.e. with a lifespan of not more than 90 days in low-Earth orbits for the sake of uninterrupted/persistent ballistic missile early warning & monitoring of BM launch sites inside hostile territory. not bad . any idea which jets dat will be bidding for d single engine fighter jets in ur airforce |

Foreign Affairs › Re: Technical Discussions On International Military Equipments Doctrines Tactics Etc by giles14(m): 1:45pm On Oct 16, 2016 |
tdayof: As tensions between Washington and Moscow flare, the Russian military is warning the United States that it has the ability to target stealth aircraft such as the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor, F-35 Joint Strike Fighter and Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit that might be operating over Syria with the Almaz-Antey S-400 (NATO: SA-21 Growler) and the recently arrived S-300V4 (NATO: SA-23 Gladiator) air and missile defense systems. However, Western defense officials and analysts are skeptical and note that both the F-22 and the F-35 were specifically designed to counter those Russian-developed weapons.
"Russian S-300, S-400 air defense systems deployed in Syria's Hmeymim and Tartus have combat ranges that may surprise any unidentified airborne targets,” Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Major General Igor Konashenkov told the Russian state media outlet Sputnik. “Operators of Russian air defense systems won't have time to identify the origin of airstrikes, and the response will be immediate. Any illusions about ‘invisible’ jets will inevitably be crushed by disappointing reality.”
However, while Moscow makes bold claims about the counter-stealth capabilities of their S-400 and S-300V4 air defense systems, the fact remains that even if Russian low-frequency search and acquisitions radars can detect and track tactical fighter-sized stealth aircraft such as the F-22 or F-35, fire control radars operating in C, X and Ku bands cannot paint low observable (LO) jets except at very close ranges. Stealth is not—and never has been—invisibility, but it does offer greatly delayed detection so that a fighter or bomber and can engage a target and leave before the enemy has time to react.
Tactical fighter-sized stealth aircraft must be optimized to defeat higher-frequency bands such the C, X and Ku bands—that’s just a simple matter of physics. There is a ‘step change’ in an LO aircraft’s signature once the frequency wavelength exceeds a certain threshold and causes a resonant effect. Typically, that resonance occurs when a feature on an aircraft—such as a tail-fin or similar— is less than eight times the size of a particular frequency wavelength. Fighter-sized stealth aircraft that do not have the size or weight allowances for two feet or more of radar absorbent material coatings on every surface are forced to make trades as to which frequency bands they are optimized for.
That means that radars operating at a lower frequency band such as parts of the S or L band are able to detect and track certain stealth aircraft. But ultimately, to counter lower frequency radars, a larger flying-wing stealth aircraft design like the Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit or the B-21 Raider—which lacks many of the features that cause a resonance effect—is a necessity. But at the UHF and VHF band wavelengths, designers are not trying to make the aircraft invisible—rather engineers hope to create a radar cross-section that will blend in with the background noise that is inherent to low-frequency radars.
Low frequency radars can be used to cue fire control radars however. Additionally, some U.S. adversaries have started to make an effort to develop targeting radars that operate at lower frequencies. However, those lower frequency fire-control radars exist only in theory—and are a long way off from being fielded. “Stealth is ‘delayed detection’ and that delay is getting shorter. SAM (Surface-to-Air Missile) radars are shifting their frequencies into lower frequency bands where U.S. stealth is less effective,” said Mark Gammon, Boeing’s F/A-18E/F and EA-18G program manager for advanced capabilities, had told me some time ago. “Early warning radars are in the VHF spectrum where stealth has limited if any capability. These radars are networked into the SAM radars giving the SAM radars cued search.”
But low-frequency radars do not themselves provide a “weapons quality” track that is needed to guide a missile onto a target. There are various techniques that have been proposed to use low frequency radars for such purposes, but none of those are likely to prove viable. U.S. Air Force Col. Michael Pietrucha had described one possible approach to me to accomplish such a feat in an article I wrote for Aviation Week & Space Technology a few years ago. However, U.S. Air Force officials were dismissive of the technique. “Just because something is technically possible doesn't make it tactically feasible,” one Air Force official with extensive stealth aircraft experience explained. desame way dey though dere U2 to b invisible until it was shutdown, let dem keep deceiving themselves. d only problem is dat if d Russians should shutdown a Western aircraft, its d Syrian military dat will bear d brunt of dere retaliation |

tdayof: The economic recession is keeping Nigerians busy as focus shifts to daily survival to the extent that we carry on, unaware of threat greater than hunger and deprivation. The Islamic Republic of Iran! There it is. The threat greater than the prospect of starvation. Yet, those Nigerians who do not identify this country as a threat to the future of our fatherland can be forgiven. The last consciousness we have of Iran was when President Muhammadu Buhari went on an official trip to Tehran, the Iranian capital to attend the third edition of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum. That visit was widely construed by members of the public that we enjoy excellent diplomatic relations with the Islamic Republic. The layman can be pardoned for holding such view but it would be suicidal for Nigeria if those in government, particularly those in our diplomatic and security circle live with such delusion. There are instances that would justify being so deluded but we must never fall for that trap for once. Of course there was that picture of Iranian Foreign Minister, Dr Mohammad Javad Zarif and the Ambsaddor to Nigeria, Morteza Rahimi Zarchi in a photo op with President Buhari in Abuja and that was as recently as July this year. One can only hope that our diplomats see to it that such events do not go beyond the phot ops that they are. Iran may be cosying up to the Nigerian government with all the touchy-feely diplomacy that would only deliver a poisoned kiss in the final episode. The Islamic Republic may be posing as Nigeria’s ally but the reality is that it is using our country as the launch-pad for its ambitious goal of spreading Shiism across the world having failed in the Middle East where several of its attempts ended in fiasco. So far, it has found a non-resistant host for the virus of state sponsored terrorism it is peddling in Nigeria. In 2013, the military intelligence discovered a large cache of arms and ammunitions in a warehouse in the Bompai area of Kano, the Kano State capital. Memory of that discovery should continue to send the jitters down the spine of any patriotic Nigerian. The weapons uncovered included “anti-tank weapons, RPGs and RPG launchers, submachine guns, handguns, and a large quantity of ammunition and explosives,” according to reports. The cache was later tied to Hezbollah and the sponsor of that terror group is well known as Iran, which pulls the strings and dictates the group’s actions, practically. We must not forget that prior to the discovery of the cache of arms in Kano, the Department of State Services had uncovered an Iranian terror network in Lagos on February 20, 2013. Members of the network answered to a Shiite cleric who had trained in Iran. Their briefs included spying on nationals and interest of other nations that are Nigeria’s allies. Further down memory lane, a vessel, the M/V Everest arrived in Nigeria on October 26, 2010 with cargo that was inimical to us as a nation – 13 container load of weapons, make that several tons of weapons that originated from Iran. While the destination of the weapons was said to be the Gambia, nothing puts it beyond those behind the shipment to have quietly offloaded and slipped some into circulation in Nigeria. The two operatives of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards behind the shipment had posed as businessmen in the business of building material so claiming the destination was the Gambia could have as well been a front. It appears Iran got fed up with having to use fronts and alibis to get the dirty job done and simply decided to outsource to a proxy. The Islamic Movement in Nigeria thus became the willing franchisee in Nigeria to do the Islamic Republic’s dirty work. What better way to infiltrate another country other than through its citizens that have been brainwashed to the point of radicalism? Whatever Iran got into IMN members must have been some sort of hallucinogen-on-steroid. Leaders of the group, hand-picked and trained in Iran have spent years, quietly building cells and networks while the Nigerian state continues to think there is now no much to worry about since they were interacting with a supposedly friendly nation. Recent events have however exposed the flaw in that perception. IMN is nothing like a religious or sectarian movement it packages itself to be. It is an Iranian terror group that is apparently intended to metamorphose into the Nigerian equivalent of Hezbollah at some point. Iran’s inability to ship weapons or embed spies in Nigeria without detection possibly forced it to activate the side of IMN prematurely. This perhaps explains the rapid rate at which the group became belligerent. It had maintained a reign of terror over Zaria, Kaduna state, which it used like a test case, without brazenly confronting security operatives or attempting to assassinate military leaders. The decision of its leaders and members to engage the army in an open war in December 2015 must have been driven by directions and assurances from outside Nigeria and only one country is known to have such capacity, interest and incentive. Two things stood out in the wake of the fall out from the folly of IMN in fighting the army. One, the cache of weapons surfaced from the IMN stronghold in Zaria echoes the several attempts by Iran to ship weapons to or through Nigeria. In both cases authorities need to investigate to find out the extent to which Iran succeeded in handing arms to IMN members in instances that were not discovered by security agencies. That probe should also extend to finding out what trainings IMN members received from Iran in the light of the videos showing members of the group performing military drills. Secondly, we must establish how much logistics and funding support IMN got from Iran, especially under its former ambassador, Saeed Koozechi, who was openly anti-Nigeria while championing the right of IMN militants to kill Nigerian troops and get away with it. That investigation too should shed light on what has changed under the incumbent Ambassador Zarchi who replaced Koozechi. The IMN extremists had slowed down their invectives against the Nigerian state upon Koozechi’s recall but have again started returning to aggressive behaviours. Their aggression in recent weeks included threats to shut down Abuja with protests if IMN head, Sheikh Ibraheem Al-Zakyzaky is not released from detention even when the offence for which he is being held, borders on terrorism. It remains unclear at this point if the members genuinely want to see their leader freed or that Iran has become fed up with him and only wants him released to newly anointed replacements who will likely kill him to have something against the Nigerian government while paving way for a leadership that will be more aggressive than el-Zakyzaky. Whatever the case may be, if the previous government did not do it, it must be because they repeatedly ignored the facts, but the federal government must review our relationship with the Islamic Republic of Iran. Its current Ambassador should be sent back home while relations with the country should be put on ice until it can give a strong commitment that it would cut off support to IMN, stop shipping arms to or through Nigeria and stop stop its attempt of creating a Hezbollah equivalent in Nigeria. . Onoja writes from the Centre Against Terrorism and Extremism, Jos, Plateau State. next tomorrow it will b Russia after dat den China. pls enough wit all dis Western propaganda. shia as far am concern is not a threat. threat we face in Nigeria is radicalized Muslims sponsored by Saudi Arabia. so our biggest threat is d Sunnis |

chinese8107: Yes. Russian need cash. but they don't sell everything for money.
They evaluated Chinese technology in some sectors such as composite materials steath tech ,ect, found even more advanced than Russia. So they may also want to get some technology exchange.
Russia is more advanced than China in fields like engine design, big rocket ect.
As for avionic or rader,China and Russia has it's own advantages over each other.
Russia sell Su-35 to China mostly for money,in fact Su-35 is probably not the best fighter in technology it has.Russia is not afriad of China" stealing their tech" because most of Su-35's technology China is about to catch up,if Russia don't sell now then it would devalue quickly.
Su-35 is over priced for country like China, the price should include some TOT ,otherwise China can make reverse enginering. The negotiation took many years,Russia wanted to sell 48 units or more, but China finally only bought 24.
