The Super Eagles are currently on strike in Egypt over unpaid allowances. According to BBC Sports Journalist, Sulaimon Folarin, the footballers who are in Egypt for AFCON2019, have refused to train today June 25th over their unpaid allowances.

The footballers say their bonuses for the 1-0 win over Burundi, which comes to $10k per player, is yet to be settled.

However, NFF president Amju Pinnick told newsmen in Egypt that they have the Naira value of the bonuses to pay, which the players have refused to accept, because the official conversion rate to USD is lower than the open market rate, which means the players will lose money.

The Super Falcons also staged a similar protest after they were knocked out of the ongoing 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France against Germany on Saturday June 22nd.

Lagos State Government on Friday evening disclosed that in the last 18 months no fewer than 34 officers of the State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA have been dismissed with two others under investigation for extortion and other sundry issues.

The Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat and LASTMA General Manager, Wale Musa, disclosed this to State House correspondents at the State House, Alausa, Ikeja.

Hamzat, while stressing that the present administration was committed to giving adequate support to LASTMA officials towards reducing travel time within the state, said it would not condone any state government official that terrorize the citizens.

“And that is why we are currently investigating two of our officers that allegedly harassed citizens who admitted driving against traffic. But the essence of LASTMA officers on the road is not to harass but to affirm the dictate of the road traffic law and be civil while enforcing it.

“The claim is that the two officers allegedly extorted money from the driver. A petition has been written to the state government by a law firm stating how it happened. The officers have been referred to the agency that has power to discipline them for investigation,” he added.

While disclosing that the officers were currently before the State Disciplinary Management Board, the deputy governor assured residents that none of the officers enforcing the laws have rights to harass them.

Hamzat further cautioned the residents against depositing money for fines into officers’ personal accounts, saying, the only approved account must have Lagos State Government as the account holder.

Explaining how the officers were dismissed, Musa said that while 24 were dismissed last year, 10 have been dismissed between January and May 31st.

He noted that the agency has decided to intensify it’s enforcement and keep watch on LASTMA officers.

“Any officer found wanting will be disciplined accordingly. We have been doing it. This year nothing less than 10 LASTMA officers were dismissed. Same last year, over 24 were dismissed. We have a system where we can discipline our staff.

“Anyone that has an issue, should please take it up with us, we will deal with it accordingly. We have been seeing so many social media comments on the law, the truth is that the law is meant to be obeyed.

“But we have a system where no LASTMA officer issues you a ticket. The LASTMA officer and yourself will face the law. It is not the right of the LASTMA officer to tell you that you are guilty, it is the court that decides.

“If members of the public can cooperate with us, we are ready and willing to ensure that the laws are obeyed and that our men work without fear or intimidation and no member of the public will be intimidated.”

Lagos State Government has paraded two officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), who allegedly received gratification from a traffic offender.

The officers whose names were not revealed were summoned to the Governor’s office today Friday June 21st, following a petition from a lawyer to the offender. The two LASTMA officials allegedly received undisclosed amount of cash into their personal bank accounts as bribe to free the offender, who claimed to be driving on a one-way lane unknowingly.

During a fact-finding engagement with the Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, the two officers admitted that they collected gratification from the offender, but claimed the offender paid the money to show appreciation. Dr. Hamzat condemned the act, noting that LASTMA officers did not have a brief to receive gratification from members of the public for carrying out their statutory duty.

The Deputy Governor disclosed that disciplinary actions would be taken against the erring officers immediately, adding that the punitive measures would serve as deterrent to other officers with similar motive to extort money from motorists.

“These two officials allegedly extorted money from an offender whose lawyer sent a petition to us. We have listened to their stories, but we are not convinced by their defence. For further action, the two officers have been referred to LASTMA for further investigation and possible disciplinary actions. The law must take its course. This effort is to inform members of the public that LASTMA is created to make life easy for all of us. In carrying out their statutory duties, no agency of government is allowed to harass citizens. We advise residents not to pay penalty into personal bank accounts of government officials. LASTMA and other agencies have their direct lines to lodge complaints. This administration will ensure people live peacefully in Lagos. We are not out to harass anybody. These two LASTMA officers will receive disciplinary actions if found guilty. They will be given fair hearing to prove their case, but if found guilty, the law would take its course.” Hamzat said
The General Manager, LASTMA, Mr. Wale Musa, who was at the meeting, also warned officers against extortion, saying the agency had stepped up its monitoring activities to eliminate extortion.

“No LASTMA officer has right to issue penalty ticket. We are ready to discipline erring officers. If they misbehave, the law will deal with them. The public should report any officer through designated numbers published on our website. We don’t condone indiscipline. The way we penalise violators of traffic laws is the way we will deal with our officers too.”
Meanwhile, the government has urged members of the public to report badly behaved officials of the agency to the appropriate authority.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who gave the directive on Friday, noted that government was currently investigating various complaints levelled against officers of the traffic agency. Full weight of the law, the Governor said, will be on any government official extorting members of the public.
