13-year-old Sandra Parks who wrote an essay about gun violence, and further narrated how she tried to escape from the “black on black crime” chaos that depressed her, has been killed by a stray bullet.

Sandra wrote about gun violence in her Milwaukee neighborhood two years ago, titled her essay “Our Truth” — a sobering reminder that, as she said, people’s poor choices and hatred have led to so much violence. .

“We are in a state of chaos. In a city in which I live, I hear and see examples of chaos almost everyday. Little children are victims of senseless gun violence,” she wrote.

However days before the 2018 Thanksgiving Day, Sandra was in her bedroom when a bullet fired from a gun outside, aimed at no one in particular, pierced a hole through her home and landed in her chest. “Momma, I’m shot,” she told her mother. She died on Monday night.

The sixth-grader took third place in the city competition, with an essay commemorating the life of Martin Luther King.Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett described violence in the city as senseless.

“Sandra Parks, a 13-year-old, went into her bedroom. She never came out alive,” Mayor Barrett told a media conference.

“Tragically, her death was caused by someone who just decided they were going shoot bullets into her house and she’s dead.”

Celebrities › Wizkid’s Bouncer Stabbed While Paying Singer’s Debt At Club DNA by Gisters(op): 10:06am On Nov 22, 2018
Nigerian pop star Wizkid’s bouncer stabbed while making attempt to pay part of the debt the singer was reportedly owning Club DNA, Vanguard reports.
The Chairman of the club Olufemi Olusanya, popularly known as Femi Posh and a bouncer David Afari were yesterday arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrates Court over the assault on the bouncer identified as Roy.

Olusanya 38 and Afari 29, are facing a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy, unlawful assault and grievous bodily harm, preferred against them by the Police.
It was gathered that Wizkid’s guard, Emmanuel, had on November 15 gone to DANA nightclub at 76, Adetokunbo Ademola Street, Victoria Island, to settle the bill that his boss was owing, when he was attacked by the defendants.

It was also learned that Wizkid owed the nightclub the sum of N8million, and also a pool party bill of N7 million, which his security guard had gone to settle, when Olusanya called Afari to beat him up and also used a broken glass to injure him.

During the arraignment of the duo, the police prosecutor, Inspector Joseph Jimoh, told the court that the defendants unlawfully assaulted the complainant Obinna, by beating him and using broken glass to injure one of his eyes, finger and left side of his face.
He said that the incident took place at about 3.am, on November 15, adding that the defendants caused the victim grievous bodily harm by inflicting injuries on his eye with a fist blow and stabbed him on the left side of his face with a broken glass.

According to him, the offences committed is punishable under sections 411, 173 and 245 of the criminal laws of Lagos State 2015. However, the duo pleaded not guilty to the charges filed against them.
Their lawyer, D. Mustapher, urged the court to admit the defendants to bail on a liberal term, as steps are already being taken to settle the matter, adding that one of the steps being taken is the footing of the complainant’s medical bills.
Consequently the Magistrate Y. O Aro-Lambo, who stood in for Magistrate O. O. Oshin, granted the defendants bail in the sum of N500,000 each, with two sureties each in like sum.

He said one of the sureties, must be a community leader and the two sureties must be taxpayers to the Lagos State government and have their addresses verified.
The magistrate adjourned the case till January 17, for mention.

Education › Christian Parents, Ifa Priest Protest Against UI School’s Hijab Crisis by Gisters(op): 4:21am On Nov 22, 2018
The hijab crisis at the University of Ibadan International School took a new twist on Wednesday as Christian, traditional religion and some Muslim pupils’ parents stormed the office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics) of the institution, Prof. Adeyinka Aderinto, to register their displeasure against the Muslim Parents Forum.

The forum had been championing the wearing of hijab by female Muslim pupils.

Members of the Muslim Parents Forum had twice in the last 10 days distributed hijab to their female pupils against the school’s prescribed dress code.

The Muslim parents had written a letter to the school management and governing board, stating that their female pupils must be allowed to wear hijab on their school uniforms. The letter was entitled: ‘Notification of Muslim Parents’ Resolution on Hijab for our Muslim Girls in ISI’.

Their agitation and the attendant threat to peace led to the indefinite shutdown of the school on Monday. Series of meetings, including that of the Parent-Teacher Association, which the Muslim parents attended but left midway following irreconcilable differences with the school management and other stakeholders, could not douse the tension in the ISI.

On Wednesday, many placard-carrying parents, including an Ifa priest and researcher, who is also the father of two pupils in the school, Awosanmi Abe, condemned the approach of the Muslim parents to the issue of hijab.

The protesting parents said wearing of hijab in the 55-year-old school was capable of dividing the students along religious lines.

Aside Abe, other leaders of the protesters were Olalekan Thani, a lawyer, and Olusola Aleshin.

They argued that the school was an indivisible entity, which no one or group should be allowed to divide for any reason.

The protesters described as dangerous a situation where little children were being made to discriminate against each other along religious, ethnic and other sentiments instead of emerging as global citizens.

In their letter entitled, ‘Clamour for the introduction of religious emblem for our children in the International School, University of Ibadan’, the parents urged the school’s board, which is headed by the DVC, to ensure that the rules and regulations guiding the institution, and to which all parents signed to uphold, reigned supreme.

They insisted that the pupils were friends and colleagues as well as their parents, stressing that any attempt by some Muslim parents to divide them should not be allowed to succeed.

Some of the inscriptions on the placards read: ‘No to religious discrimination in ISI’, ‘Say yes to peaceful co-existence in ISI’, ‘Stop!! Don’t divide our children’, ‘No to religious crisis’, and ‘Let our uniform be uniform’.

In a letter signed by the trio of Thanni, Abe and Aleshinloye, and addressed to the Vice-Chancellor, UI; the principal and the PTA Chairman, ISI, the parents said they received the news of the second closure of the school in the space of two weeks with serious pain and trauma.

The parents said, “We want to use this medium to inform the management that the school is not only populated by the two dominant religions, but also has traditional believers. These groups have vowed to enforce their rights in line with their Muslim counterparts’ claim to the right to use of their religious emblem in hijab wearing.

“A scenario in which armlets and Ifa traditional beads are freely used as religious symbols in the school will not be funny. What will then become of the uniformity concept of the uniform when the school environment can be taken as a market place of sorts, where a rainbow of apparels is the order of the day? May the day never come when the ISI becomes the example of what a school environment should not be.”

They noted that the ISI Muslim Parents Forum’s position was an attempt to disrupt the academic milieu as well as the atmosphere of love and unity already entrenched among the pupils.

They insisted that the rules and regulations of the school must be binding on all consenting parents and their wards, and that the choice of language and procedure adopted by the Muslim parents in their letter dated November 9, 2018 to the school principal and copied to the Chairman of the Board of Governors was both derogatory and an usurpation of the powers of the board.

They accused the Muslim parents of attempting to disrupt the school’s academic activities as well as the love and unity already existing among the pupils, who do not see religious barriers among themselves.

Oscar-winning actor Robert De Niro and his wife of more than 20 years have separated, media reports said on Tuesday.

De Niro, 75, and Grace Hightower, 63, have been living apart for some time, The Hollywood Reporter, celebrity website TMZ and People magazine said, quoting anonymous sources.

De Niro’s spokesman did not return a request for comment.

The “Raging Bull” actor and Hightower married in 1997 and have two children. It was De Niro’s second marriage.

“Sometimes things don’t work out the way you hope or want them to,” a source close to the family told People magazine.

De Niro, one of America’s most respected actors and winner of two Oscars, has tended to keep his family and his private life out of the spotlight.

He made headlines last month when he was among a slew of critics of US President Donald Trump who were sent crude pipe bombs in the mail. None of the devices exploded and a Florida man was arrested and is awaiting trial.

Celebrities › A Highly-rated Manager Once Rejected My Music – CDQ by Gisters(op): 8:49am On Nov 16, 2018
For rapper Sodiq Abubakar, aka CDQ, life takes a different turn today as he releases a second music album titled, Ibile Mugabe.

Recalling the difficult hurdles that he had to scale at the onset of his music career, in an interview with our correspondent, the artiste confessed that he had never imagined that life would be this rosy for him.

Like most of his colleagues, CDQ also had his fair share of disappointments. The most painful of such experiences, perhaps, was the day a top-rated artiste manager in the country told him bluntly that he would not succeed as a rapper. Badly in need of guidance at the time, the rap artiste had approached the manager for help. But the latter had ended up almost discouraging him.

“He told me that my style of music was too local and lacked commercial value. But I believed in myself and I kept working hard. When you know your strength, you just need to dwell on it,” CDQ said.

The rapper said he decided to name his new album after former Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, to show how his stubbornness had helped him to fulfill his dreams as an artiste. “ ‘Ibile’ in Yoruba language means ‘grassroots’ and we know that the acronym Mugabe symbolises stubbornness. The title of my album has to do with a boy from the grassroots who was determined to succeed by all means.”

The likes of Wizkid, Davido, Kizz Daniel, Mr. Eazi and Tiwa Savage are featured as guest artistes in the new album, apparently to enhance its value in the music market. CDQ admitted that he had intentionally requested their inputs on the album. “I believe that there is more that one can achieve when two heads come together. When you try to embrace other artistes and do music that will appeal to their own fans, it makes your album more marketable,” he said.

However, the rapper waved away the insinuation that his music style attracted only ordinary street folk. He said, “I do music for everybody. My song, Flex, has been out for more than a month and the National Broadcasting Commission doesn’t have a problem with it.”

Crime › Guard Arrested For Stealing Boss’ 5 Wristwatches, Pounds And Dollars by Gisters(op): 7:10am On Nov 14, 2018
The police have arrested a 35-year-old guard, Opeyemi Badmus, for allegedly stealing from his boss, Soname Akinola.

It was gathered that Akinola, who recently returned to Nigeria from the United Kingdom, met the guard and a housemaid, who were employed by his wife while he was abroad.

Akinola alleged that he travelled to Ogbomoso, Oyo State, and when he returned home, five wristwatches and an undisclosed amount of pound sterling had been stolen.

The complainant told the police that when he quizzed the security guard and the housemaid about the missing items, they both denied taking them.

He said, “I travelled on October 18, 2018, to Ogbomoso and returned two days later. Immediately I entered the house, I noticed the main entrance door was open. On getting to my room, I found out that five wristwatches valued at N600,000 and my dollars and pounds had been stolen.”

The guard and the housemaid were reportedly arrested and taken to a police station, where Badmus allegedly confessed to stealing the wristwatches, but denied taking the money.

“I saw the wristwatches in the leather bag and I removed two; I do not know anything about the money,” he told the police.

He was arraigned before the Candide Johnson Magistrates’ Courthouse, Ikorodu, on one count of stealing.

The magistrate, Mrs F. Azeez, granted him bail in the sum of N250,000 with two sureties each in like sum.
