The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed December 10 for the controversial re-run election in Rivers state. According to a statement by the electoral body, Lagos and FCT re-run polls have been scheduled for December 3.


Recall that the delay had attracted the attention of the Senate, which on Wednesday, November 2, gave INEC an ultimatum to conduct the pending re-run election or force the Senate to embark on strike.

Rivers state still has a senatorial, House of Representatives and House of Assembly elections yet to be conducted. INEC had in July postponed the Rivers rerun election for the second time.

President Muhammadu Buhari after seeing the enormity of the challenges facing the country when he assumed office in May 2015 said he felt like “absconding”, The Cable reports.

Speaking on Thursday, November 3, during a parley with participants of the Senior Executive Course 38 of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPPS) at the state house in Abuja, President Buhari blamed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for Nigeria’s economic woes.


President Buhari said:

“For 16 years and eight consecutive governments of the other party… there was unprecedented revenue realised, the oil projection which can be verified was 2.1 million barrels per day. From 1999-2015 the average cost of each Nigerian barrel of oil was $100 per barrel.

“When we came it fell to less than $30 per barrel and is now between 40 and 50. Actually I felt like absconding because 27 out of 36 states in Nigeria cannot pay salaries and and we know they have no other source than to depend on salaries.”

President Buhari defeated former President, Goodluck Jonathan by 15.4m votes to 12.9m votes in Nigeria’s national election adjudged globally to be free and fair.

He became the first opposition figure to win a presidential election in Nigeria since independence in 1960. A former military ruler, President Buhari said he is a convert to democracy and would do everything within his power to unite the country.

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) of Nigeria has condemned the plot by some members of the Senate to amend the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act to their own advantage.

The Senate had last week voted to be in charge of the powers of CCB and the CCT and this happened just hours after the Appeal Court ruled against Bukola Saraki‘s attempt to stop his trial by the tribunal.

“The mission and vision of the eighth National Assembly is becoming clearer by the day, as they have abandoned pressing issues for parochial and self-serving ones.

“It is our belief that if the people in authority do the right thing there would be no need trying to circumvent statutory laws and acts.

“For us at congress, allowing the president to maintain his power of appointment into the CCB only is not enough if the war against corruption must be won,” TUC said in the statement signed by Comrade Bobboi Bala Kaigama, its president, and Comrade Simeso Amachree, its acting secretary-general.

“The act that regulates the activities of CCB is not meant for a specific individual. It will outlive the eightth Assembly. The act is not about them but about ensuring that people in authority become responsible.

“We salute the courage of the appeal court on its declaration on the case involving the senate president Dr Olusola Saraki, on charges of false assets declaration brought against him by the federal government.

“We are aware of certain moves by some senators to frustrate the effort of the federal government as far as the corruption fight is concerned. If it were in some Asian countries people who support such moves by now will be in jail or, probably awaiting execution.

“It will be recalled that a similar amendment bill was introduced in the Senate earlier in the year, which generated political tension that forced the lawmakers to suspend the process. Raising this issue again shows the lawmakers are insensitive, greedy and appear not to give a damn.

A suspected Boko Haram suicide bomber was shot dead by soldiers in Maiduguri as he tried to make his way into the Bakassi IDP camp.

Alhaji Dan-Batta, a top leader of the Civilian-JTF, told Premium Times:

“The male suicide bomber was seen loitering around the back perimeter fence of Bakassi camp at about 9 a.m. He was shot down before he could advance closer to the camp. One of the bombs he was carrying exploded, but another is still strapped on his body did not explode. The anti-bomb squad operatives are trying to defuse that one.”

Dan-Batta added that no other person was reported killed or injured from the explosion.

Anike Agbaje-Williams is the first African woman to appear on television as a presenter. As the veteran newscaster and presenter celebrated her 80th birthday, she received a congratulatory message from President Muhammadu Buhari.

In a statement issued by Mr Femi Adesina, the President’s special adviser on media and publicity in Abuja on Saturday, October 29, President Buhari joins the Williams’ family, friends and the vibrant media profession, in celebrating the broadcaster.

The president describes Williams as one of the pioneer African television broadcasters, better known as ‘‘Africa’s First Lady of the Tube’’, started out early with the first television station in Africa in 1959, Western Nigeria Television (WNTV).

The statement said in part: “She also worked hard to sustain the legacy of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who established the WNTV, as a ‘surrogate teacher’.’’

Also, the President commended her courage and her great spirit. And he prayed that God would grant her longer life, good health and more strength in her new found love for singing in the choir after her retirement.

Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti state has urged all monarchs in Yoruba land to defend political leaders against external forces. Speaking in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti state capital on Thursday, October 27, while receiving the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, at the palace of the Ewi of Ado Ekiti, Oba Rufus Adejugbe


Fayose said: “You (Ooni) are in a good position to unite us. We want to appeal to you to remember that we all belong to you, irrespective of political parties.

“That was why I said without apologies that an action against Ahmed Tinubu is an action against the Yoruba nation.

“We must defend the Yoruba nation. They are encroaching. They are harassing; they are depriving us of our legitimate rights. Those who toiled day and night are now victims of circumstances.

“Nothing must happen to Tinubu, Falae and others. This is the way they started with (Obafemi) Awolowo and (Pa Michael) Ajasin.”

Fayose noted that it is the effort of the Ooni to unite the Yoruba had started yielding results as he urged him to sustain it.

On the current economic recession, Fayose said there was hunger in the land as he appealed to the federal government to evolve policies that would change things for the better.

He also condemned the activities of herdsmen that were destroying farm produce across the country.

“They asked us to go back to farming and they released their cows to be eating our farms. Any cattle that destroy farmlands will be seized by the government,” he said.

On his part, Ooni of Ife, , Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, said the handling of the threat posed by herdsmen across the country should be handled diplomatically.

Ooni made this known while speaking with journalists. According to him, Ekiti had the power to enact laws.

He said he was impressed by the thousands of people that trooped out to receive him and he called for prayers for the governor.

Ewi of Ado Ekiti, Oba Rufus Adejugbe on his part, charged the Ooni to continue to unite Yoruba monarchs and sustain the growing unity among Yoruba people.

Eyitayo Jegede is not qualified to contest according to the factional chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)
The Nation reports that Poroye claims that as a result, Jegede is not qualified to contest the election on the platform of the party.

A court had also declared that businessman Jimoh Ibrahim be recognised as the party’s flagbearer for the election. Ibrahim’s posters have now flooded major parts of the state.

Poroye was quoted as saying that Jegede does not have the right to declare that Ibrahim is not a card-carrying member of the party.

In a statement signed by the PDP’s director of media/publicity in the state, Yemi Akintomide, Poroye said Jegede has not attained the mandatory two years membership of the party to qualify him to contest

“The truth of the matter is that Jegede joined our party in November 2014 alongside his boss, governor Mimiko when he abandoned his Labour Party (LP) platform which he used to win the 2007 election and second term in 2012.

“Even at that, Jegede only came into the new party as a technocrat working with the governor as commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General and not as a card carry member of any political party, not even LP.

“And if by now, he likes to join PDP as a member and wants to contest any election, he will apply for a waiver to the state chapter through his ward chairman, then, I as the state chairman reserve the right to grant the waiver or reject it.

“You now wonder how can that person now turn around to say an outstanding leader and promoter of the party in the state, Ibrahim is not a member; somebody who single-handedly brought 22 Toyota buses for the party and gave each of the 18 local government areas N10 million to run the party offices in the council areas.

“Even the governor himself is yet to beat this record in the history of running the affair of a political party in this state,” the statement said.

According to Poroye, God granted Ibrahim the grace to secure the PDP ticket from the southern senatorial district when it became clear that some members of the PDP had betrayed the party by supporting Governor Mimiko.

“That is the reason why people are happy now that Barrister Jimoh Ibrahim is the candidate of PDP and they’re ready to vote for him on November 26 as the next governor of the state in place of a stooge push forward to kill the rotational arrangement on ground as if other district are slaves to the central,” he said.

Reno Omokri, a former aide on new media to ex-president Goodluck Jonathan, has warned President Muhammadu Buhari to be careful with the way he is treating his predecessor because he could end up being in the same position someday.

Responding to questions during the Oxford Union of the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom, Jonathan said his administration did not need to make noise about purging the Nigerian system of corruption.

He however, noted that it will be wrong for him to speak on certain cases that are currently before the court, saying he would not want to interfere with judicial matters.

He said, he would not “interfere with the legal processes because several matters are pending in court.”

The Nigerian federal government has appointed a managing director of Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC)
The Nigerian federal government has appointed Mr Fidet Edetanlen Okhiria as the managing director of Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC), Thisday reports.

On getting this appointment, he is in full responsibility of providing the much needed leadership in the commission.

According to a statement, Okhiria is a qualified electrical engineer with significant records of achievement in the field of electrical/mechanical, signalling, telecommunication, ICT, installation, maintenance and repair of electrical equipment and rail transport since 1988 covering design, development, installation and supervision of several projects.

President Muhammadu Buhari approved new appointments in 13 federal government agencies which was contained in a statement issued by the director (press) in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Bolaji Adebiyi.

One of the appointments was Engineer Usman Abubakar as the new chairman of Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC).

Tim Mokwa from Florida was making his daily commute home from work when an unlikely passenger popped out from beneath the hood. A 6-foot snake slithered from under the hood and made its way to the windscreen.


"This guy decides to pop his head out from under the hood. And tried to come in the window. About a 6 footer," he wrote on Facebook. "That's only a little more than half of him in video." Mokwa said he doesn't know what ultimately became of the snake.

Kano lawmaker, Abdulmumin Jibrin has raised alarm over attempts on his life as the budget padding scandal rages on.

Jibrin revealed today, Friday, October 14 that Speaker Yakubu Dogara and some other principal officers were trying to kidnap or kill him.

The lawmaker representing Kiru/bebeji federal constituency also levelled more accusations against Dogara and wondered why after almost three months, Dogara is yet to be prosecuted.

“Speaker Dogara and the 3 other Principal Officers inserted wasteful and fraudulent projects worth about N20 billion naira in the budget.

“Speaker Dogara and3 others connived with about 10Committee Chairs and inserted over 2,000 projects worth about N284 billion in the budget. Speaker Dogara in concert with 3 others stole for themselves the entire 20% inputs reserved for the House after the harmonization exercise.

“Speaker Dogara tried to force me to create a strange line item in the service wide vote to allow for a N20 billion insertion inthe budget. Speaker Dogara took away the appropriations committee secretariat on two occasions,several fraudulent insertions were made into the budget.

“Speaker Dogara fraudulently diverted 2 Federal Government water projects to his personal farm in Nasarawa State. Speaker Dogara diverted a FGN rural electrification project to his farm in Nasarawa and a complete PHCN reticulation free of charge.

“Speaker Dogara diverted a Federal Government of Nigeria Feeder Road project to provide direct access to his farm in Nasarawa state. Speaker Dogara and Deputy collected millions of Naira for the rent of houses and guest houses.Hon Hembe allegedly stole part of the money.

“Speaker Dogara made fraudulent arrangements to make monthly deduction from members’ RUNNING COST to fund a fraudulent housing scheme. Speaker Dogara abused his office in a clear case of conflict of interest by directing an agency to grant loans to him and others.

“SpeakerDogara also allowed several wasteful procurements including ones that are already available as ploy to siphon funds of the House. Speaker Dogara has refused to distribute internal budget of the House and is running finances of the House in absolute secrecy

“Speaker Dogara Doguwa shortchanged members in the quantity and quality of items and allegedly received kick-backs in 2015 SDG projects. Speaker Dogara received about 1.5billion naira in fraudulent running cost allowances and has used allowance issue to blackmail members

“Speaker Dogara directed the Sergeant-At-Arm Under the guise of sealing my office carted away 53 files and lot of 2016 budget documents. Speaker Dogara continue amidst protest to use the new House rule that is subjudice after giving himself draconian powers in the rules.

Reports suggest that hree of the suspects and an innocent pedestrian lost their lives in the accident.

Daily Post reports that 2 of the suspects sustained injuries and were taken to the hospital, while the dead bodies were deposited at a mortuary.

General Manager of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Mr Adesina Tiamiyu, who confirmed the incident, said preliminary investigation revealed that the occupants in the car could be robbers as several dangerous weapons were recovered from the car.

According to Tiamiyu, “the agency received a distress call regarding a lone accident at Iddo Bridge at 2.15p.m.

“On arrival at the scene of the incident, the Emergency Response Team (ERT), of the agency discovered a grey-coloured Hyundai ix 35 with number plates SMK 485 CM, which skidded off the Eko Bridge by Iddo Terminus and fell on a man, who died immediately.

“Three of the suspected robbers died immediately, one escaped with injuries, while the fifth was taken to the hospital by Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS).

“The dead bodies, three suspected armed robbers and one other person identified as a mechanic named Nwamba, were handed over to State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit, SEHMU, and were subsequently taken to the mortuary, while the vehicle was towed to Denton Police Station, Ebute Meta, by the agency.”

The LASEMA boss added that items found on the victims include one locally-made double-barrelled pistol with five live cartridges, one laptop, mobile phones and a dollar note.

Tiamiyu, who advised residents to always be security conscious at all times, said the matter had been handed over to Nigeria Police for proper investigation.

Governor Fayose, had early September, directed that History be reintroduced in schools in Ekiti State, noting that; “Ekiti people must learn from past events to have a better future.”

Tinubu, made a strong case for the return of History as a subject in the country’s school curriculum, saying any nation which forgets its past has lost a beacon to guide its actions. He said this in a short remark after reviewing the book, entitled Muhammadu Buhari: The Challenges of Leadership in Nigeria, at the International Conference Centre, Abuja.

He described the removal of History as a subject from the current Education curriculum as a mistake that should be corrected without further delay.

“I have consistently maintained that democracy is about those in power listening to the people because the power of the people is greater than the power of those in power and I am glad that on this one, they

“The reality we must all face is that no society can progress without reference to its pasts, and one of the reasons our value system has been so bastardised is that we no longer talk about our past. We no longer tell our children what our past leaders did either wrongly or rightly.”

Speaking further, Governor Fayose said; “When we were growing up, we were made to read about great leaders of our nation like Obafemi Awolowo, Nnamdi Azikiwe, Tafawa Balewa, Ahmadu Bello, Aminu Kano, King Jaja of Opobo and so on. We read what made them great and that shaped our lives.”

While admonishing those holding power at the federal level to listen more to the opposition, Governor Fayose said; “When we speak, the impression should not always be that we hate President Mohammadu Buhari and his government. Rather, it should be about how beneficial is what we say to the country.”
