Emusan: @ bolded, as a constructionist; builder's are looking a way to eliminate heavy materials in construction that's why sky scrapers can be successful in construction today.

Again, in comparison of a ship with a house; Ship is a movable object (most inner walls of a ship is constructed with wood) while this one is a stationary structure. In conclusion, wood is one of the most lesser dense engineering materials. Here you can only talk about the maintainance.

ba7man: Actually, you're the one that's wrong here. I'm an Architect and i tell you that building will last for decades if well maintained and proper seasoned wood is used. By the way, its cheaper and lighter(to aid floatation). The shacks they currently live in in Makoko is made of wood and it has survived decades, Ijaws build too using wood on water....Water side locations in South-East Asia also build on water using wood so its a worldwide practice.
Yes sir...I'm very sorry for my rude answer. You should have mentioned you are an architect, then I'll know that you know what you're saying. You know most of this Nlanders say stuffs and I most times reply them too. Thought u were one of such who always say the negative. So I'm really sorry sir. Forgiven? smiley

And as for you, kini big deal with what I said? Everything that has an advantage has a disadvantage...EVERYTHING IN LIFE. I only mentioned the disadvantage of the school building with ordinary wood, perhaps in a harsh manner which i'm not supposed to. Doesn't mean I'm more knowledgeable than them in the area of ship or school building whatever. I just wanted to add a comment of what I thought about it. OP didn't mention that criticism is not welcome. So what's your headache with it? Take time o cheesy

tunde300us: I dont see any tidal issue here, that area of makoko has had worse building made with materials not half as strong as what you see and yet nothing of a tidal issue has occured. For ur info that school is just by the bank of the area and i dont see any tidal issue.I mite be wrong though but u need better explanation to convince me this isnt out of the box idea from lagos.
Good thought...If it is on the bank then better. At least, there'll be less fear of the tidal issues. But of it's not, U know what happens embarassed

Evidence of foolishness, lack of education and Nigerian local mentality...Nkpi... tongue So they'll use firewood to build a school on a river and how long do u expect that to last with the raining season ahead. This is rubbish!!! angry Locally sourced wood instead of steel? Why don't they use steel used for building a normal ship? Are these people serious? shocked

The architectural work is great, but the materials used? it's a no!

They will only end up killing children...What if the tide comes? And is it rubber or plastic that will hold the boat(floating school) firm?
Steel is much more better as it can withstand the surge if any unexpected occurrence takes place...hmmm...NAija I hail o

Family › Re: Best Way To Correct Children by gluv01(f): 3:41pm On Feb 13, 2013
ba7man: Children are constantly testing their boundaries so a parent has to be sensitive to know when they do this. They try somthing naughty and check your reaction, if you fail to react appropriately, they step up their boundary. Be very quick to spot these moments and nip it in the bud with a sharp reproach before it gets out of hand. Children also have things that make their lives worthwhile eg Video games, toys, new clothes, Choclate etc you normally treat them to. Withdraw these treats when they misbehave and let them realize it was their naughty behaviour that was responsible. If all that don't work, A "HARD RESET" will do.....check below for illustration.....

all4naija: First and foremost, I apologize for my bad typos. There is no one way of educating a child but not through beating. Don't you ever beat a child for doing wrong. A correction by explanations and giving the child reason why not to do such a thing again will be of great help to better adulthood. Even when he does it again and again, in education there is always the sense of guiltiness that can push him to learn. This will give him the ability to reason and apologize. In the case of beating , the child may repeat the wrong and look for means to hide it from the parents thereby committing another crime of lying complicating the issue the more.

Children are humans and are bound to repeat wrong. That should not be viewed as a weakness on their side that deserves a beating. The psychological impact of beating a child can be devastating to the social life of a kid without the parents knowing it.Another thing, children learn very fast. So, don't let them learn how to beat people.
OMG!!! You make me wanna cry cry...That's so educating. Nice writeup. kiss

Family › Re: Best Way To Correct Children by gluv01(f): 2:21pm On Feb 13, 2013
all4naija: I totally disagree. Educating you child is done out of love in the first case. Beating a child will end the him in having bad idea about life generally and the family in particular. I don't how much impact this can have on a society but I think Nigerian society is a reflection on how the kids were raised and treated.

There is no way beating a child can be of better solution when other ways are available to help the child understand what he is doing is wrong. We have read many comments of parent who beat their kids end up them repeating the same thing. Beating will only strengthen the child in committing crimes and adapting to a hostile life.
I understand what you mean, but if you read my comment again, I said depends on how many times the child has done that. And even if you are to whip that child, it should be for a very good reason. And it also depends on the society too as you said.
And i think the education stuff is part of the love too. Yea...

all4naija: I think it is through education. Educating them on the advantages of doing something right and the disadvantages of doing something wrong.
Doesn't really work well(for some parents and kids)....The best answer to that question is LOVE. When you love the child, you know what is good for him/her and what is not.
You know when to use the whip and how to use it for both his safety and your conscience(ie, maybe you've corrected him on that particular thing on three occaions, then you use the whip, but you can as well forgive him too and caution that the whip is available if he misbehaves again. Rather than whipping or spanking him on the first occasion). Forgive me, I can't remember the exact verse in the Bible that says, "children are naturally silly, but a good spanking and love will bring them upright".

You understand his feelings and reasons why he did what he did. For example, during my secondary school days, a pastor came to my school and while preaching, talked about how he's son was caught with money. If you know him. HE is a known pastor and the whole school was surprised why the boy stole when the dad could afford what he needed the money for; lesson fees. Now when the dad(pastor) asked his son why he stole the money, the boy soberly reminded his dad that he has been asking for the money for over 2weeks, and the dad being a busy man, was always on the slogan(remind me tomorrow dear, I'm very tired now),this went on for about 2weeks and then punishment in school began, so the boy stole the money because he was scared of being flogged in school or driven away from classes for failing to pay his lesson fees. Now he did the wrong thing for the right reasons.
If it were some dad, they'll pounce on the innocent child immediately without knowing the reasons for his actions. Nigerian dads are good at that; I mean no criticism please.(Junior is this what i taught u, to steal? now come here, and they start flogging the child like a thief). I just think the whole thing relies on love to correct your child. Some children might be the mischievious type and you'll think there is no amount of love that can correct him. No, try love, plus the stick-carrot method and see the wonders. cheesy
