Donzman, Laudate does not belong in the same category as Mamajama, xtycod and docokwy. I read a lot of her postings and I believe she is one of the most objective people on nairaland. If you disagree with her on issues, fine, but please don't put her in the same category as those three clowns. @Mamajama I think it is very unfortunate that you'll just highjack this thread with all those demeaning statements about igbos. Like Donzman said, I never knew you were this tribalistic. It is a well known fact that armed robbery is committed by every tribal group in Nigeria, even the hausas still rob despite Sharia. And please, go and bring your statistics showing igbos are the biggest armed robbers in Nigeria. Another thing that puzzled me is the names you were calling thiefofhearts. Dude, this is not man-like. The lady asks you to stop polluting the thread and the next thing from you is to refer to her as a hoe What kind of man does that ? May be I-Man is right about you afterall. |
Go for the private sector (PZ). To me, that is a no brainer. |
.Thank you oo, this is the point I was making earlier. You have reiterated my point. |
Celemel, I think your analysis could be right. I guess we just have to wait and see. |
Donzman:I agree with you 100% on this ! This is exactly how it's supposed to work. the Government announces a fixed price of fuel (often lower than the market price), and whatever the difference is, the Government will pay the suppliers (foreign or local). What happens when the suppliers' cost of production goes sky high (e.g. as a result of importing refined oil) and the govt doesn't want to increase the fixed price because it doesn't want to burden the masses ? ANSWER > fuel scarcity !! The suppliers just sell it on the black market so they can sustain themselves. Donzman:Good point Donzman. But where does the government draw the line ? If the subsidization is $3 billion, $10 billion or $25 billion per year, do we just continue to pay ? Should we just be using money that could be used for other purposes to subsidize oil ? No school, No roads, No electricity, but really cheap oil. You get my point ? |
Donzman, the cost of production goes up when the oil marketers have to import refined oil. There is the cost of refining, then there is the shipping cost. Above all, the oil marketers have to make their own profit. This rise in additional cost of production is what is transferred to the consumers in the form of oil price increase. When the govt fixes prices arbitrarily, the oil marketers sell the oil in the black market until the govt gets around to bringing up the prices to a level that can sustain them. |
My brother, even if the refineries were all producing at full capacity, we'll still fall short of national demand. Our country is run as if the population is going to remain stagnant forever. |
Because the food issue is all internal (within the U.S.), there is no external pressure. The U.S. produces oil too, lots of it (Texas, Alaska etc), but it does not have enough for the whole country, so it must import. The importation (external pressure) is what makes the oil price sky high. If we could produce and refine all our oil for local consumption, then the price can be reasonable. Unfortunately, we must import refined oil and we have no control over the refiners' prices. |
davidylan:1. If we had enough refining capability in Nigeria for local consumption, then I think it'll help a whole lot pricewise. Unfortunately, we have to import refined oil and the price of this refined oil is out of the hands of the Nigerian government. 2. When someone is giving you something for free (i.e. subsidizing), you can't dictate to the person the terms at which you want to receive the gift. This is really the big picture in a nutshell. |
My fellow thread members, I understand that we are rich in oil and as such, should not be paying what the Americans (for instance) are paying for it. As things stand now, the govt does not solely control oil in the downstream sector. The oil marketers (like O & O) play a big role too. We should also bear in mind that the govt actually subsidizes oil, otherwise, we'll be paying for oil at the current world market prices. We currently have to import refined oil because of our broken down refineries. The NNPC and oil marketers are subject to changes in the price of oil in the market and this change should be reflected at the gas pumps to avoid oil scarcity and keep them from running their businesses at a loss. But the real issue at hand here is - how much subsidies should the government be providing ? Where does it draw the line ? For fiscal year 2007, the federal govt has budgeted N150 billion (over $1 billion) to subsidize oil. Is this enough or not ? |
If his worth is $8busd why is he not in forbes list rich guys.Good question. Well, Forbes refuses to list individuals that it cannot verify their source of wealth. There are lots of people worldwide not recognized by forbes, but this doesn't mean they are not worth billions of dollars. Aliko Dangote is one of these people. |
There's Zamfara power plant (Massive?)I think you meant Zungeru, there is no plant being built or proposed for Zamfara. |
I know this is going to be hard to believe, but it's true. My age goes back and forth, it's never constant. |
