when doctors inseminate a woman with her husband's sperm to get her pregnant because the sperm can't swim by itself to the egg is it immoral too?  shocked
cool down oh, gnature!
Again, you are deflecting the issue. We are talking about women getting pregnant with no intention of being married here. Husband does not even come into play here at all.

God intended man and woman to bring child into this world. And ideally, the child should be conceived after marriage.

Puting needle in your self to born pickin in the name of being independent is nothing but immoral.
FamilyRe: Single Parenthood - Trendy Or Trashy ? by GNature(m): 4:50am On May 18, 2007
Who would ever want to be a product of artificial insemination ?

What does such woman tell her child when she asks:  I want to know more about my father ?

How would you all feel if your mom said she never met your father a day in her life and you are 15 years old ?

Abeg, quit advocating immorality. It is sickening.

@gnature
i am trying to tell you that the same men that crucify women who want to be single mothers  are the same men who have numerous wives and children. these women live like single mothers so what's the difference? why the crucifixion? they are the same damn thing.
You are changing the topic here.  I condemn polygamy in all shapes and forms. This thread is not about that.
FamilyRe: Single Parenthood - Trendy Or Trashy ? by GNature(m): 4:39am On May 18, 2007
There are women who are getting pregnant through artificial insemination all in the name of being independent.

Now, tell me, how is the child going to know his father ?
FamilyRe: Single Parenthood - Trendy Or Trashy ? by GNature(m): 4:37am On May 18, 2007
This topic had nothing to do with polygamy. That is completely different.

i agree but the facts still remain that there are people who grew up in a single parents home who did not end in prison or turn into a mental case
I am not disputing that.  If you were to poll these people and asked them if they would have rather had a father while growing up, what do you think their responses would be ? i think it's quite obvious (and for a reason)

its not about beliefs

yes its obvious you don't support single parenthood, the sad fact is there are people already in this situation and more people are still going to go into it : are we going to tell them to go jump into the ocean for being single parents?
does that make them bad people?
The point I am trying to make is, we shouldn't live our lives on the premise that "well, it worked well for some folks, so it must be okay" No. We must strive to make ourselves better.

for the records ik6 is not a single parent but you all should stand in other peeps shoes for a minute
I am talking about women who have children with no intention of getting married all in the name of being independent. Not all the other
women with children.
FamilyRe: Single Parenthood - Trendy Or Trashy ? by GNature(m): 4:11am On May 18, 2007
There is a reason God gave us two parents. If God had intended us to just have one parent, he would have just created a woman and no man.

But if you folks don't believe in doing things the way God intended, I guess all I can say is more power to you.

you simply tell the child how he came into being , that you are a single parent! if that child was well brought up from the get go well (monitored and cared for ) and the single mum or dad is not always away at work the need to mis-behave would not arise
Who told you the need to misbehave would not arise ? When you don't come up with a vaild excuse as to why everyone has a father and he does not have a father, he could resent you ! and start acting out. You grew up knowing your own father, so it'll be difficult for you to see things from this type of kid's perspective.

what about peeps who grew up in a single mum/dads house without getting into any kind of trouble what about those ones?
When you give a legitimate reason as to why a kid's father is not around, the kid learns to live with it. When you give reasons such as "I am just a single parent" the kid has a hard time living with it and it affects them psychologically. This stuff is well documented, I am not making it up.

samsillo and gnature what are you guys now saying?

so if a single woman wakes up one day and decides to have a baby on her own she seen as trashy?
ikamefa, I am not saying she is trashy, but she should know that it is in the child's best interest to have his/her father around while growing up. Sometimes we have to put our interest aside so things work out better for our kids. It is part of the sacrifice one gives as a parent.

my philosophy is: you want something go for it ( as long as you are not committing a crime or killing somebody to get it) smiley
I totally disagree with you on this.

my take : if you are a single parent ,be ready to pay a price to see that kid/s into adulthood
and be careful /wary how you expose your young rugrats(kids) to various uncles and aunties grin wink
It is very unfortunate that you take this stand. Let me ask you a question, what do you tell a child that becomes of age and starts asking for his father ? He sees all his friend's fathers, but does not have one of his own. Do you realize that a lot of young boys that act out  and get in trouble with the law do so because of the absence of their fathers in their household ?

@GNATURE, Bayelsa and Delta state both have respective universities and have been having universities but they have decided not to go to school instead they want control of the oil money without education and oviously the unrest is also a factor.
@naijaway, Delta and Bayelsa do have universities, but they are state universities, not federal universities. They are claiming it is their oil money that was used to build the federal universities all over Nigeria today, so they should each have federal universities too, and I am on their side !

Part of the problem in the Niger Delta today is due to the non-presence of federal infrastructure in that part of the region, despite the fact that they produce all the oil revenue for the nation.

If that $311 million was spent on building universities in Delta and Bayelsa (at $155.5 million a piece) , they would feel less cheated and the militants would see that someone is finally listening to their pleas for even development.

Again, misplaced prioriities

The government wants and wishes someone Nigerian has an innovative way or a sure way of solving our electricity problem and water problem and also factoring in the global warming effects all done with our resources or 80% of our resources but the funny thing is that no one is capable of doing that
We are capable of solving our electricity problem. Infact, we are already in the process of solving the problem. By December 2008, it is projected that we will be generating 10,000 MW of electricity. The national assembly has already abolished the law that used to make NEPA the only power company. In essence, the power sector is being privatized, but the process is very strenuous and cumbersome so it is going to take time for us to get to where we need to be. But we already have a fine blueprint in place, we just need the private investors to come in, and the right minds and right leadership to follow through with the blueprint .

PoliticsRe: Obj's Belated Love For Lagos by GNature(m): 9:57pm On May 17, 2007
In his 8 years in office, Obasanjo has marginalized Lagos more than any other state in Nigeria. He is still withholding about N14 billion local government funds belonging to the state as we speak. Obasanjo has reimbursed other states billions of naira for monies they spent on federal roads. Lagos, on the other hand, has been given chicken change in reimbursement.

Does the fact that Lagos is governed by AC (not PDP) and Obasanjo has issues with Tinubu, does this justify the complete neglect of the 14 million people that call Lagos home ? Many people say Tinubu is a failure; to me, OBJ plays a big role in Tinubu's inability to do more for Lagos as its Governor.

The federal government has paid so much attention to developing abuja to the detriment of Lagos, its commercial capital, and this is really saddening.

iyken:
we're talking 'bout cases where ladies just choose not to get married but choose to have kids in name of independence shocked
It's good you helped clear things up a bit with this post.

Women who choose not to get married and have kids all in the name of being independent are putting their own interest ahead of their child's.  Anyone with even half a brain knows that a 2-parent household is always better for a child's normal growth than a one parent household.

It is one thing if a woman had been in lots of relationships in which all the men were controlling, cheating, unable to hold a job etc or if all the male role models in her life have all been useless characters. If such woman insists on being a single parent, to me, that is somewhat understandable. Such women just need to seek counseling from a priest to let her know that there are good men out there despite her plight.

But women that have had no problems whatsoever and just choose to be single parents for the sake of being independent are just putting their interest ahead of their child's interest.  I don't know if trashy is the right word to use for such women, but it sure aint trendy.
PoliticsRe: Good Things Happening In Nigeria by GNature(m): 6:02pm On May 17, 2007
That was an excellent article @Backslider !

We should not misconstrue the problems with Nigeria's political front with the progress made on the economic front. These two are completely different. Again, banks are now in a position where they can lend to the real sectors of the economy and that is very commendable.

Banks can now lend to the real sectors of the economy such as:

Agriculture

I believe if enough funds are provided, we can embrace commercial agriculture and do away with subsistence farming. Before you know it,  we'll be back to a position that we were in the 60's i.e. a net exporter of food, not a net importer as is the case now. Also, do you guys know that cassava is in high demand in China ? They are using it to make the equivalent of potato chips. The price of garri has skyrocket to the roof because of this.

Small and Medium Scale Industries

This includes the vulganizers & co. With help from the private sector funds, these folks can expand their busnesses and provide employment.

Commercial Real Estate

Help in meeting the housing needs of the Nigerian masses. The banks can lend to commercial real estate people, they have nothing to lose because people would always need a place to live. A reasonable housing estate can generate between N20 million to N50 million a month in rental income.

Tourism and Infrastructure

As I mentioned earlier, the new MM airport local terminal was built with the chunk of the funds from Oceanic bank. Not a kobo of public funds went into it. Isn't that unprecedented in Nigeria ? A consortium of banks also provided some of the funds used to build the Tinapa resort. We are already witnessing the gains of the bank reforms in Nigeria

Power Sector

Nigeria has an extremely high demand for power. Trust me, there is a lot of money to be made here. The banks can lend to this sector easily because the use of power in Nigeria is never going to decline and everything is going private now (i.e. power utility companies). Millionaires are going to be made in this sector in years to come, mark my word.
PoliticsRe: Putting Food On The Table Or Sending Satelite Into Space by GNature(m): 6:14am On May 17, 2007
Why should taxpayers who don't care about this so-called "prestige" have to pay for it? That's why it should be a private sector matter. Those that want "prestige" should go and buy their own satellites. Thanks.
You are quoting me out of context, it seems you only read the first line of my post. Did you bother to read were I said:

" The crust of the matter is, is this what we should be embarking on at this moment in our history ? In my opinion, the $311 million spent on this satellite could have been put to much better use " ?
PoliticsRe: Putting Food On The Table Or Sending Satelite Into Space by GNature(m): 5:07am On May 17, 2007
Having a satellite in space has its merits. No one is doubting the prestige it brings to a nation and the technological advantages that comes along with it. The crust of the matter is, is this what we should be embarking on at this moment in our history ?

In my opinion, the $311 million spent on this satellite could have been put to much better use. For instance, that money could have been used to build a power generating plant that 'll add atleast 400 MW to the national grid [the 414 MW Geregu plant cost 195 miilion euros (about $228 million) to build].

Bayelsa and Delta states have been saying they have no federal higher institution of learning in their states. The $311 miilion used for launching this satellite could have been split in half and used to build a federal university in these two states (at $155 million a piece). I think the Niger delta people would have been very appreciative of this.

We spent about $200 million on the abuja national stadium. How has it benefited us so far ? How often is the stadium used per month/year ? How much has it brought in in revenues ? That stadium lies dormant 90% of the time. If that $200 million was spent on buiding more schools, more teaching hospitals or on a power plant, wouldn't we be better off ?

In short, our priorities are just completely misplaced.

davidylan:
Back to debating with real adults:

There is no question that many of our leaders mean well for our country. The problem is everything from ministerial appointments to selling toothpicks on the streets is highly politicised. There is one reason why i am skeptical of the light rail project, as soon as it suceeds in Lagos, every "geopolitical zone" starts agitating for a light rail project WITHOUT considering the economic benefits beyond "the west has a rail project, the east and north must have one too"!

When we start treating policies as more than "we deserve federal presence too", then maybe things may improve.
I couldn't agree with you more !

The point you raised reminds me of the airport issue in Nigeria. We currently have around 21 airports (perhaps more) in Nigeria. According to the FAAN, only 4 airports, the MM airport in Lagos, PH airport, Kano and Abuja airports are economically viable. Millions of naira is spent on building airports across Nigeria and some of these airports are used only 3-5 times a month !

Mind you, each airport is manned by atleast 5-10 staff ranging from manager, engineers, maintenance folks, security folks etc whose salaries have to be paid monthly. Why build airports if they are just going to lay dormant ? Simple ! Since Rivers State has an airport, Ondo, Gombe and Akwa Ibom must have theirs too regardless of their economic viability.

The funniest thing is, some of the governors are pleading for their airports to be upgraded to international status by the federal government ! Why ? Again, their logic is just based on the geo-political structure, not economic viability. The south west has one, the south south has one, the north has two, so we must also have our own international airport at all costs !!!

thread members, please forgive me for going a little bit off topic wink

BusinessRe: My Dream Is To Spread Wealth To All Nigerians - Aliko Dangote by GNature(m): 10:49am On May 16, 2007
it is inevitable that Nigerians would benefit from this project in numerous ways

employment, infrastructure (especially the local host community), lower cost of cement leading to lower housing costs and so on - these are the kinds of projects we need with large knock on effects on the local economy, supplying/manufacturing our basic needs will go a long way in developing the nation.
Don't forget that the government will also generate revenue from taxes.

@ the lightrail issue and power.

One of the Idea is to open the door for the rail industry to take. Let us put criticism aside and be constructive.

If you had One billion dollars will invest in Rail business?

The Solution was to have set up Private transport companies.
These transporrt companies that you are referring to, are they going to be using the roads ? In other words, are you referring to taxis, buses etc ? I am asking this because one of the goals of the light rail project is to de-congest the roads.

That is part of our problem in Nigeria, lack of planning !  That light rail initiative is going to take up a lot of power. Why not make sure the power situation is addressed first before building the rail system ? Or atleast build the rail system and its power source simulteneously.

The next thing you know, 2 years into the train operation, its no longer working because there is not enough power to operate it.

Any way sha, I just hope they have made special power provisions for the project.

OBJ flags off $449m rail project in Lagos
Dayo Ayeyemi, Lagos - 16.05.2007

President Olusegun Obasanjo on Tuesday in Lagos flagged off the $449million Iddo – Ijoko Light Rail Mass Transit Project being coordinated by the Lagos Mega City Development Authority.

He said the Federal Government would contribute 45 per cent of the cost of the project while Lagos and Ogun states would contribute 40 and 15 per cent respectively.
Sounds great !  I hope they can come through with it. It'll go a long way in addressing the traffic congestion in Lagos.

Like I was saying on another thread, the only issue is how the light rail system is going to be powered. I hope they get this ironed out ahead of time. God forbid NEPA strikes while the light rail system is in-transit, that would not be funny at all. lol
