Presently, the foreigners in the delta are living large I know what I'm saying. All these little skirmishes as per youths disturbance is limited to some isolated areas. And for your info, work is progressing at a fast pace on many projects in the delta. Just don't cry foul where there is none.
Debosky, listen, you have to let ono be. Please leave him alone.

Look at the statement he made that I quoted. Is this who you want to reason with  undecided

TravelRe: Sos: A Nigerian In Dallas Needs To Find Other Nigerians Fast by GNature(m): 5:18am On Jun 26, 2007
bombom_911:
This Nigerian is in trouble, I just moved to Dallas on invitation of a friend.(not a Nigerian) But now I'm here and I think I'm screwed big time, While this lady is a very nice person, Due to some habits that her and her friends have which I can not state here, I find myself in a limbo right now, All the plans we made is out the window, They seem to be so much into this habit that they do not know what they are doing from min to min, Now I found out they do not have any job. So now I need to find my way around here, I need to find Nigerians here to help me find my way around here, Please email or call me if you live in DALLAS, email me at bombom_911@yahoo.com , Please someone help me from these pot heads,
Be careful of the Nigerians you come in contact with as you seek their help. People have a tendency to take advantage of others that are in a dire situation. My advice to you (hopefully you have a green card) is to get a job and start saving/supporting yourself.  While you are working, you need to glance through the newspapers and see how much it costs to rent a room or a 1 bedroom apartment; then save as much as you'll need to move out. You need to get an apartment or a room to rent asap.

If you do not have the papers to work, that one na a whole nother issue altogether.

I think it is pretty obvious that the folks around you are into drugs. Good luck.  wink
PoliticsRe: Calabar: Missplaced Project by GNature(m): 4:45am On Jun 26, 2007
I-man and McKren,

You both have solid points and make sense.

For the most part, government should not be involved in businesses, it should just leave that to the private sector (of course, it should provide an environment in which the businesses can thrive). While the GSM story has been met with relative success in this regard, this is not necessarily applicable to all lines of businesses.

I believe there are times when govt funds helps kick start an industry. Many corporations in the west were started by the govt and later privatized. This is what I hope will take place in the power sector in Nigeria, where private investors have been reluctant in partaking in the building of generation and transmission facilities. The govt can build the facilities (as it is now) and then privatize them later.

So, you both make sense, its just that the govt has to know when it is best for it to put funds in a business and when not to (and like I said earlier, for the most part, it shouldn't).

In short:-

Developing country - govt might need to intervene directly in jump starting a business/ industry with its own funds (up to 100%)

Developed country - no govt intervention is usually needed at all
PoliticsRe: Northern Ambassador Tells Host Country That Nigerian Criminals Are Southerners by GNature(m): 4:12am On Jun 26, 2007
McKren:
9ja4eva deserves a Nairaland award for always sticking to the topic even when immediate past comments have derailed from the topic.

She also deserves an award for never joining issues with anyone, sometimes she even agrees with two contrary views addressed to her.

Notice that am tempted to address her as "she" even when her sex is not stated because she sounds very soft and conservative.
Why don't you just ask her out ? It's pretty obvious that you are in love with her.
PoliticsRe: Northern Ambassador Tells Host Country That Nigerian Criminals Are Southerners by GNature(m): 9:31pm On Jun 24, 2007
It is true that southerners engage in more crimes overseas because the bulk of the Nigerians living overseas are southerners (and middle belt folks) anyway.

The issue here is, this Nigerian ambassador should not have spoken this way about any Nigerian be it southern or northern. He is not representing northern Nigeria as an ambassador, but Nigeria as a whole. So when he speaks, the only word that should come out of his mouth should be Nigeria and he should never say anything derogatory about the country in his capacity as an ambassador.

To me, this is just plain common sense.
CultureRe: What Is The Significance Of The Yoruba Tribal Marks by GNature(m): 7:56pm On Jun 23, 2007
well i believe the thread starter wanted to focus on the Yoruba scarification. i don't think it's singling anything out.
What is the difference between "focusing on the yoruba scarification" and singling them out ? The reasons yorubas have tribal marks are the same reasons other Nigerian tribes have tribal marks - for identification.

So, the appropriate thing to have done would've been to address the title of this thread to Nigerian tribes that use tribal marks and not just the yorubas.

Anyway, I'll appreciate the thread starter to answer the question I originally posed.

Quote from Laudate:
The point being made here, is that different ethnic groups across Nigeria also have indigenes who carry different types of tribal marks.
Thanks so much oo laudate. This is exactly the same point I was making. Great minds think alike.  wink
CultureRe: What Is The Significance Of The Yoruba Tribal Marks by GNature(m): 7:31pm On Jun 23, 2007
Shouldn't the thread topic say "What is the significance of Nigerian Tribal Marks" ? The yorubas are not the only ones with tribal marks in Nigeria, so why single them out ?
PoliticsRe: Tinapa MD Earned Four Million Naira Monthly Wage by GNature(m): 4:49pm On Jun 23, 2007
I believe the Tinapa Business Resort should be registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC). So, if these aggrieved people from Cross Rivers state want to know the true ownership structure of tinapa, they should contact the CAC

Is it really true that Donald Duke owns (or has a stake) in the company that currently manages tinapa ? I hope this isn't true.

Just answer my question first. Then, I'll reply you: Why did OBJ not send the Nigerian Army Armada in Portharcourt after Odili when he was fingered by EFCC as one of the most corrupt Governor in the country?
OBJ didn't send the Nigerian Army after Odili because the Rivers State house of assembly has oversight function over the state executive branch. OBJ really shouldn't have to intervene if the Rivers State house of assembly was doing its job properly.

I have answered your question, so please answer mine:

What has the Rivers State house of assembly done about ex-Governor Peter Odili's looting of the Rivers State treasury

PoliticsRe: Fg Bows To Labour Demands, Reduces Fuel Price, Vat by GNature(m): 5:16am On Jun 20, 2007
I-man:
The Govt should stopp setting the price of fuel!Simple!Let the market determine the price of fuel.
I understand your point I-man. I don't mind the govt subsidising fuel, the thing is, there should be a cap to it.

If the fed govt budgets $1.5 billion a year for subsidizing fuel, then we must stick to that figure. We can't expect
the govt to carry all the burden regardless of price fluctuations and other market forces.

Recipe for Ewa agonyin

Buy like 2 cups or more of ewa Oloyin( brown beans)

pick out the stones and beans husk from it

wash thouroughly under constant flowing water

in a desirable pot bring water to boil( about 4-5 cups)

pour in the was beans ,close pot

some peeps like to add salt and potash here ( not really a fan of this ) undecided

cook for like 40 - 60 minute

if not add more water ( use your initiative here, the beans can't be too watery wink) cheesy, continue cooking till the beans is soft, very soft

then get a spatula (yoruba name omorogun) cheesy, mash the beans into a paste

NO!! Don't forget that analogue mobile phone technology, had arrived since the time of Abacha. What did Abacha do? He hawked the licences to his Lebanese & Arab friends e.g. Chagoury & Chagoury, and ignored the real telecoms companies & experts.

The Chagoury family set up Motophone as their own franchisee, to handle that business. What did they do? Absolutely nothing! They sat on the license and milked the country dry, using foul means. NITEL got the analogue license to run the 090-number series mobile phones. They performed marginally better than the Chagoury's by making it atrociously expensive, so that only the rich could afford it. At that time, a 090-line & handset was sold for over 150, 000 naira. The network was abysmally poor & crazy, and the call rates were even crazier. Even under Abubakar, the issue was not revisited.

http://www.thisdayonline.com/archive/2001/01/17/20010117beh01.html

What am I saying? Previous rulers before OBJ, never created an enabling environment for GSM to take off, much less thrive. OBJ threw it open through public bidding, and compelled the 1st set of foreign telecoms companies to perform, by giving them an unrealistic deadline, December 2001. They almost broke their backs, but they made it. The first major external MTN call was made that year, from the NITEL office on Temple road Ikoyi, by network engineers who assembled the mast, boosters & antenna all through the night. Econet (now Celtel) also went live, the same year. In less than a year, the telecoms comapnies & their entire industry witnessed a change, that previous rulers had refused to allow them, to carry out in previous years.

Today, you and I can walk into any shop, and buy a phone set of our choice or a sim card, at an affordable amount. We can make calls at our own pace, without queuing up for hours on end, in one dingy business centre. Some of us have even dashed out handsets or lines, to our friends & family. Something which wouldn't have been possible, a few years ago. We shouldn't forget those who helped, to make it happen.

As much as I dislike OBJ, I will always give him credit for this one thing he did to make GSM accessible to the Nigerian public.
Very well said Laudate.

EducationRe: Which Is Better? Covenant University Or Babcock University by GNature(m): 5:00am On Jun 19, 2007
Thanks so much for that insight @sturvs

I am really glad to hear about the standard of education at both covenant and babcock. Many people have criticized obasanjo for raising the cost of higher education in Nigeria through the establishment of these (and other) private universities, but like I have said in the past:

1. government alone cannot provide all the educational needs for higher education in Nigeria. It doesn't satisfy the need at the primary or secondary schools, so having private universities only makes sense.

2. No one is forcing those that cannot afford to go to private universities to go there, so the issue of universal increase in the cost of university education is far fetched.

3. The establishment of private universities opens room for those who hitherto would have been unable to attend public universities, since a lot of qualified applicants are denied admission due to lack of space at the public universities.

4. The establishment of private universities will inevitably improve the quality of higher education in Nigeria because it'll foster competition among all universities.

PoliticsRe: Olusegun Obasanjo's Legacy by GNature(m): 3:03pm On Jun 16, 2007
He brought GSM to Nigeria.

He cleaned up the banking sector

Nigeria's own satellite was launched during his term

He formed the National Pension Commission - Pecom

He formed the EFCC

He had more women in top positions than any other head of state

He cleaned up abuja and largely restored it to its original master plan

He formed the Niger Delta Development Commission - NDDC

Thirteen percent (13%) derivation for oil producing states

Establishment of much more private universities in Nigeria

Allowing the inclusion of private firms in power generation

We were owing over $30 billion in 1999, now we owe around $5 billion (paid our foreign debt)

He met $3 billion in reserves in 1999 and left over $40 billion in reserves in 2007.

He didn't obey court orders - withholding Lagos LG funds against court orders

He neglected Lagos

Abuse of power - spending funds that have not been appropriated by the National Assembly

Greatest Airplane crashes in Nigeria's history during his tenure

Excessive Petrol Price Hikes

He played a big role in the Anambra/Ngige scandal

Lots of politically motivated killings remain unresolved - Bola Ige, Funsho Williams

He was selective in his fight against corruption - he went after Tafa Balogun, Adolphus Wabara, but has left Tony Anenih, Sule Lamido untouched.
