FamilyRe: What Is The Value Of A Woman Who Can't Cook? by GNature(m): 12:00am On Jun 14, 2007
Both men and women are forced into roles that they may not be interested in just because of their gender. It's bad.
This is mostly applicable in non-1st world countries, e.g. I have seen men stay home and take care of the kids while the wife brings home all the income (in the west).

It's bad.
true, but not always.
PoliticsRe: Six Reasons Why The Niger Delta Remains Neglected By The Nigerian State by GNature(m): 5:50pm On Jun 13, 2007
my brother, I just think at this point in time, we should not be spending $311 million on a satellite, not with our decay in infrastructure and the pressing issues of the ND.

Let me give you another instance of our federal govt misplacing priorities. Obasanjo's govt spent almost $200 million on the ultra modern abuja stadium. Now, tell me, how much economic benefit has been derived from it since being built ? Most of the time, the stadium is just there lying dormant.

If that money was spent on a power generation plant or a university in either Delta or Bayelsa, wouldn't we be getting something in return by now ? You see, it is all about the timing and prioritizing.

You don't spend money on a DVD player when you have not taken care of food. Just like the stadium, the DVD player is going to lay dormant while you starve.
PoliticsRe: Six Reasons Why The Niger Delta Remains Neglected By The Nigerian State by GNature(m): 5:14pm On Jun 13, 2007
The schools you mentioned are state owned, not federal owned.

Delta and Bayelsa states have no federal universities, while some states have more than 1.

If you recall, I said I don't have an issue with Nigeria owning its own satellite. The point is, there are more pressing issues at this point in time.
PoliticsRe: Six Reasons Why The Niger Delta Remains Neglected By The Nigerian State by GNature(m): 4:54pm On Jun 13, 2007
I mentioned this on another thread:

Obasanjo spent $311 million on this new satellite project. It is not that I am against the project, I just feel this is not the right time to embark on such initiative. We have more pressing issues.

Delta and Bayelsa states have been clamoring for federal presence - Why not establish two federal universities at these states at ($311 million /2) $155 million a piece ?  At least the ND folks would have a sense of sharing part of the national cake.

While I don't believe the Nigerian state is deliberately depriving the ND of much needed development, I have to admit that a lot of its priorities are completely misplaced.

PoliticsRe: Six Reasons Why The Niger Delta Remains Neglected By The Nigerian State by GNature(m): 2:38pm On Jun 11, 2007
ono,

listen, i am not disputing the fact that the niger delta has been neglected. I don't think anyone in their right mind would come here and say the niger deltans have been given their fair share of the oil revenue generated from the ND since independence.

The point i'm trying to make here is, since 1999, there has been efforts at trying to correct the mistakes of the past. This is where the 13% derivation and NDDC comes into play.

Obj's administration has also awarded the contracts for 7 power stations which are currently being built across the niger delta. There is also the multi-billion naira East-West road, which connects the niger delta area.

In response to what you said, you are right, abuja is given special attention being the federal capital, but this is not to keep the niger delta states from being developed as you are implying here. Other states of the federation (oil & non-oil producing) are also being deprived of resources as a result of the special attention given to abuja.

The 87% remainder (of the 13% derivation) is shared among the fed govt & all 36 states of the federation. So, I didn't get your point here.
PoliticsRe: Six Reasons Why The Niger Delta Remains Neglected By The Nigerian State by GNature(m): 12:30pm On Jun 11, 2007
It is completely inaccurate for you to state that the Niger Delta is neglected by the Nigerian State.

How do you explain the 13% derivation fund for oil producing states ? Rivers State collects over $100 million monthly sometimes, more than any other state in Nigeria. There is also the Niger delta development commission (NDDC).

PoliticsRe: From Number Three To What? by GNature(m): 4:41pm On Jun 08, 2007
This is the issue at stake here.

There are 4 most powerful positions in Nigeria's political setup :

The President
The Vice President
The Senate President &
The House Speaker

Now, Nigeria is split into 6 geo-political zones:

The North has 3 zones:  North west, North Central & North East
The South has 3 zones: South South, South East & South West

The problem now is, how do you split these 4 positions among these 6 zones ? So far, 2 of these positions are shared equally between the North and the South. Unfortunately, 2 zones are always going to be left out because there are only 4 slots.

How do we remedy this situation ?
