Even if it fully owned by Americans, it is still a private organization and it's ridiculous for anyone to insinuate the American government paid the ransom just because an American organization did.

You are right about insinuation. But irrespective of the ownership structure. The company domicile under American business law is still regarded as an American company. Same as a ship registered in USA will gain protection from USA.
