Politicians rich and powerful in Naija would love to live in EU/US if they could still be powerful. Why are they buying properties and investments over there? Why do they shop over there? Why are their kids studying over there? Go to EU/US embassies in Naija and see number of people applying for visa. Before you respond, check your gen set to see if there is enough petrol to last you till 12am. Check your GSM to see if there is network, check your bathroom if there is water. BTW, have you pressed your shirt and trousers for work/business before PHCN cuts you off? Is your bank ATM working? Is your bank network working? IS your flight going to be grounded/cancelled because of FAAN? Be worried about you and your Nigeria.
Your dream? Not being harassed by thieves, kidnappers ,boko haram,police and thugs. having a 24/7 constant power,having a telephone network that works, having a bank ATM machine that actually works and dispenses cash-

I see, you live in a perfect world man........ Now lets get back to reality, and let me use myself as a case study, I cannot and I repeat I cannot be bothered about settling in any western country. Presently the only thing the US can offer me is a better education. Not that there aren't good schools in Nigeria,( my dad studied at UNN) ....of course there are but I still love the exposure and diversity of cultures. Secondly the rich and powerful of Nigeria would not want to live in any western country....they may own lots of properties there but how many of them do you see living in these countries......Dangote, Otedola, Adenuga, JIm Ovia......just to mention a few.... Trust me, if you are even middle class in Nigeria, you live a way better life than the middle class people in these western countries. Lastly, all those other things you mentioned to be dreams or whatever are totally false...people have 24/7 light if they choose to, there has never been a day where water didn't come out of the taps in my home and Boko haram is a terrorist group plaguing Nigeria....I don't know how this is a problem of the government or what. People die everyday in every part of the world man.

LOL, I see your point but it's only a fool that will have the opportunity to get gold for free and would rather settle for plastic. What I'm trying to say is my parents know that by having a better quality of education you stand a better chance to survive in Nigeria hence their sending me here. I will always tell people that the only thing the US Can offer me is a better education, nothing else....like c'mon the majority of the top 400 universities in the world are in the US...aside that, I have no business here. Gbawe: My brother, It is amusing to read talk about diasporan Nigerians envying their fellow Nigerians, based in Nigeria, "making millions". How many Nigerians are making millions? Besides, how are those millions spent if not to turn Private houses into fortresses and 'Islands' where citizens must provide their own electricity, water and security?

The misconception promoted about diasporans envying "better-off" home-based Nigerians is regrettable in my opinion. It stems from how Nigerians are materialistic and eager to quantify everything in relation to money. While some diasporan Nigerians may feel as you conclude , because of the "grass is greener" ethos, most are ultimately happy and pragmatically grateful they are not in Nigeria where it is "survival of the fittest" and a Paradise for the elites where ordinary folks are non-entities and virtually nothing works and you may still die of easily treatable ailments if you have no money.

A comparatively small number of folks may make millions in Nigeria but , for example, they will spend millions also attempting to educate their children privately , to the highest standard, only for that child to be no better than children of diasporans who have gone to State Schools in the West. Many things balance out.

Diasporans may work hard and face heavier tax/expenses obligations but a "cash and carry" society , dehumanising of as much as 60% of it's people, is not an envious model either.

I don't think anyone who truly puts issues in perspective would be comfortable with the model of nationhood Nigeria displays to the world. I.e hideous opulence for a few and terrible poverty for the majority. A better model would be a Nation where people, even if they feel they work too hard and pay too much taxes, still have all their basic needs guaranteed to the extent majority of citizens can enjoy a dignified existence.

You made great points, but wouldn't Nigeria be regarded as a first world nation if all these things were in place? That is generally what the country is aiming at....increasing the middle class, providing the basic amenities like power, education, healthcare, better roads, and putting the youths to work but all these cant be achieved in 5 years, Nigeria is growing at a pace and will eventually get there.

@OP like you said, it's not all the Nigeria's in diaspora but some of them. Some of them sicken me. I am international student, so I'm in an out of the US like every year and when some of these my diaspora uncles/ aunties find out my school fees and the fact that I don't use any sort of loans or whatever, they begin to question my dads or mums integrity saying they must be looting money, like!! WTH? They earn salaries. Recently my mum came visiting and on Nigeria's independence she told one of my uncles "happy independence", he replied her with the same words too then later added "52 years of nonsense and failure", my mum got mad and told him that it's people like him that failed Nigeria and generally that's how I feel about these bitter diaspora Nigerians. It's funny how some feel they have ALL the ANWERS to the problems Nigeria is facing yet they are living with next to nothing. Some can't even acknowledge the fact that there are Nigerians making it in their homeland with no connection to corruption or whatsoever. That being said, I would repeat that not all diaspora Nigerians act this way and obviously there are Nigerians that would do anything to relocate to some western country because they are generally brainwashed that its all rosy on the other end.

In Nigeria, one can not enjoy a quiet moment in his\her ride without bumping into bad roads, wide eyed law enforcement agents, borderline crazies who use the road while blasting away the horn of their vehicles, hawkers on the roads, walking deaths on the roads that will not give right of way to vehicles, elected and non-elected individuals with incessant siren, encountering number of roadblocks by one government agency or another, the menace from idiotic weekend sanitation, loudmouthed dingbats who think they are right while awfully wrong, moronic ninnies driving on the wrong side of the road, unreasonably in hurry while going nowhere, traders taking over the passageways, junks of cars and lorries that could not escape from the gates of junkyards in civilized countries still ply the roads, constant lack of electricity, absolutely no running water, unforeseen menace of kidnappers, armed robbers, ritual predators and religious terrorists, rampant mosquito and snake bites, environmental hazards and social and political idiocy fueled by tribalism.

So we watch the possessed, frenzied dance, drenched in silent tears as freedom is locked up in democracy's empty cellars. I need guidance, please re-build me.

But then, why can I not simply be me, without being re-branded?
Or does my complexion cloud the colour of my character?
Does my location limit the lengths of my liberty?
Does the spirit of my conviction shackle my soul?

And is this life worth re-branding?

Others blame my calamities on the colonial master that has left my shore some 51 years ago. Without deceiving myself, I know I have problems, who will deliver me? May be what I need is to be re-born, Christians call it being born-again. Turning to a higher authority or changing direction. I mean to sincerely own up and turn to the man up-stairs, may be, just maybe solution will come from there.

To re-build a wobbling structure, there is need for dismantling of existing one (remember, if the foundation can be destroyed, what can the
righteous do?).. Shall I then consider the idea muted by some of my own who have fled abroad?
Some call for 'Separation for Co-operation' , others call for true Federalism - while others are yet asking for the return to Parliamentary system.
Which way do I go? on October 1, 2009, I celebrated my 50th birthday and my 52nd is just around the corner, barely less than 2 weeks.
I do not want to carry on in my golden age without direction, ... so, please, help me God. Re-mould and Re-Build me.

Nigeria is 52 tomorrow and so we should not have any problems what so ever? Please don't be so gullible....every country had issues of theirs at 52 and still have issues at whatever age they are now. Then again, power has been improving, new and better roads have been built, education is thriving, economy is growing etc.....people should understand that everyone in Nigeria can't boast of success; that is very impossible....some people suffer, some smile and some are very happy, that generally how the world is. Well I believe that these schools should have some sort of financial aid or scholarships for the less privileged ones that merit them. That being said, people should understand that some secondary schools in Nigeria even charge higher than most of these "church owned" universities. Maintaining an institution requires a lot of funds; hiring and paying the salaries of lecturers, instructors and all other staff...these things require a whole lot of funds and of course the church wants to make profits. These schools wouldn't be running if the church was running a loss. Then again, no one can be little the quality of education gotten from these schools with respect to the state and federal institutions; most of them can't even compare, except the top ones like UNILAG, UNIPORT, UNN, OAU etc... Like someone earlier mentioned " quality/ the best education is for the rich and those that merit it". Havard charges over $50,000 every year but no one complains because the quality is eminent. It would intrest you to know that more than 50% of its students are under some sort of financial aid/ scholarship....only rich people can afford to spend $50,000 a year, even the middle class man can't. With that said, I believe quality education should be given to those that merit it; this could be through scholarships or grants etc but as it is only the middle class or wealthy Nigerians can afford to send their children to these " church owned schools".

Please....not this whole Ghana and Nigeria thing again. They banned the movies, if a Ghanaian movie company wants its movie to be distributed in Nigeria then let it go through the NFVCB (national film and video census board). It's that simple, I don't detest Ghanaian movies...some actually make sense especially the high budget ones same goes to Nigerian movies....but on the average scale, I would say a Nigerian movie has a lot more to offer than the average or below average Ghanaian movie.

Yes the hawkers, newspaper sellers mechanics may live in slums but even some mechanics afford a comfortable 2 bed flat in festac. Like!, are you seeing the surroundings in this place? If 80% of Lagos's population live like this then 80% percent of Lagos state looks this way....which is totally untrue. I have seen documentries on these sort of places in Lagos and especially the settlement on water, and I'm sure not up to 5,000 people live there. This video was shot mainly in one area if you may notice, I actually don't know where that is....prolly either mushin, adjegunle or ebutemeta...these are the only slums or ghettos I know of in Lagos. Just to remind you, there are also engineers, bankers, lawyers, accountants, doctors, nurses, pharmacists, electronic shop owners etc......are you telling me that these middle class people also live in slums like the ones shown in this video?, c'mon man...

I don't find anything wrong in or with the video...not atall. Every country has ghettos and with a lot of emphasis on "EVERY", ( not one left out) at least I didn't see so many hungry looking kids or men, most of them looked fit. Yes, you can see the poverty in Nigeria but its only a fool that'll think that all or 90% of Nigerians live like this. Rick Ross knows where he and his crew stayed in nigeria and the kind of luxury he recieved, what anyone with a shallow minded mind thinks is very irrelevant. it's obvious Rick Ross wanted this kind of setting for his video and he probably went to the ghetto areas in Lagos And shot it. The message he is trying to put across can't be done if he shot the video in bananna island, ikoyi or vgc....even the US version was shot in the slums, and as far as I'm concerned....every slum is a slum.

Funny how Nigerian musicians keep claiming "streets" and all they have to show for it is music videos in clubs with champagne or hotels. If our outdoor scenes were so wonderful they'd be shooting in these same "streets" not running to SA and Ghana to shoot music videos.
