And our tax to gdp ratio is very low, our tax rate is low, and 70% of Nigerians do not pay taxes to federal and state government

And yet, you expect miracles with the tax rate we have? With an income that is 80% from oil.?

Okay.
Now we are getting to a common ground.

Govt at all levels should focus on improving our tax to Gdp ratio to atleast 15% as recommended by world bank, for a starter.

If other nations have achieved higher tax toGDP then Nigeria can!

Even if we fight corruption and cover the leakages, it still won't be enough.

We budgeted 1.1 trillion for education this year. For comparison, the 2009 ASUU-FG agreement made provision for 1.5 trillion to be paid over two years in extra funding for universites. Money which was never paid, and which government told ASUU in 2013 that it would not be paid...instead ASUU got 1 trillion over 5 years, which has not been paid in full to date.

Note the 1.1 trillion is not going to universites alone, it is going to primary , secondary and other tertiary institutions. Divide the money and there isn't much.

And that is before we talk about looting, stealing, and so forth

That's why we have to explore the fees option, because it is either that, or we pay heavy taxes, and tax everyone, or we go the loan route...ie we beg IMF for a loan (which they won't give, because we are loaned up, and DMO is on the government's case anyway).

That's why I am annoyed when you called me a government defender. This is not about defending any yeye government...this is about facing the truth that our universities are underfunded, and they don't have enough cash.

Yes, our forefathers went to unviersity for free...back when numbers were much smaller, and there were fewer universites, and not everyone went to uni, and people could still get office jobs with primary 6 education. Government could afford to fund all that...and yes there was corruption back then well well.

If fighting corruption and leakages not enough,it is school fees that will make it enough, abi?

The total amount realisable on school fees is not even up to N100b!

I repeat, school fees Is not an option for any developing country with high poverty an illiteracy rate.
Such a country can never catch up with the rest of the world.

The standard source for govt revenue all over the world,is taxes not school fees!

We can have free quality education when we pay the money for it.

We don't have the money? then we can still have free education, only it won't be quality.

And by the way, I believe that the National Assembly should reduce their budget by half.

Now you’re talking.
Not only NASS.There is a lot of leakages and corruption in the entire system that would require only a revolutionist to deal.

This is common sense:

Nigeria lacks enough doctors,engineers,teachers,etc

Are we going to get more or less of these professionals by increasing school fees?

We should careless about Ghana and tackle our challenges!

Ghana can never develop more than Nigeria via higher school fees,so the comparison is so stupid!

Nothing like free education...someone is paying in loans, taxes, etc.

Ghana GDP is higher than Nigeria...by 200 dollars...some 2300 compared to our 2100 dollars. That is not much...and their fees are 25 times higher than ours.

Any country with free education in Europe pays for it with tax rates that approach half a taxpayer's income. You want that here?

Ghana GDP is higher than Nigeria’s?

Education is for development, therefore making it less accessible via fees is counter productive.

Total school fees by all students in public schools is not up to N150b when much more is wasted or stolen by politicians.

Nigeria can afford free education if we reduce corruption and cost of governance.

Eg what are we doing with Two houses of assembly, when our poor children would have to pay school fees?

Why didn’t you include countries where tuition is free?

Education at all levels should be free or very affordable,in developing countries with very high poverty rate,if such countries want to catch up with the rest of the world.

Even Ghana has higher per capital income than Nigeria

Trading in narcotics involves a lot of dishonesty and fraudulent disclosure.

You cannot successfully trade in narcotics without dishonesty or fraud.

When you conceal and do not disclose what you are carrying across the borders, you are both dishonest and fraudulent.

Fraud has a very wide meaning an it includes embezzlement, concealment, illegal business etched

And is there any state in Nigeria or any where in the world, where every person finds true love, or where true love is guaranteed

Business / The Price Inelasticity Of Petrol & Power ,Versus So Called Market Forces by GoodGovernance: 2:19pm On Jul 19, 2023
The law of supply and demand prescribes that prices change when either the supply of goods and services or the demand for them changes. Ceteris paribus, when supply increases and demand remains constant or reduces, prices go down. If supply remains unchanged or reduces, while demand increases, prices go up. These phenomena are referred to as the market forces of demand and supply.

However market forces can only operate optimally when there is significant price elasticity of demand for a particular product or service. Market forces operate very weakly where the demand for a product is price inelastic. The demand or a product or service is said to be price elastic if say a 10% change in price would lead to say 10% or higher change in demand. Demand for a product or service is inelastic if the change in price does not cause a significant change in demand. Inelasticity often relates to very essential products with no close substitutes.

Petrol and power (electric) are very essential products without close substitutes and having price inelasticity of demand. It is noteworthy that the much referred telecommunication, has higher elasticity than the former. Thus market forces would have very weak contribution to the prices and demand for petrol and power. This is the reason why the prices of these two products, locally produced or imported, can only be determined by the cost of production, including raw materials and not the so called market forces. Thus increasing the number of players and consequently supply, would have very weak impact on their demand and price.

What really are these market forces? Does it exclude government intervention? How “free” is the market?

According to Wall Street Mojo, market forces refer to the forces influencing the price and quantity of goods in a market. In economics, it is also known as market dynamics, describing how they eventually affect a nation’s economy and growth. They are limitless and can impact foreign markets and international trade transactions. Such forces vary from country to country based on social, demographic, cultural, economic, technological, political, and legal factors.

The four major market forces are:

– Supply and demand
– Government intervention
– Human emotion and consumer buying behavior
– Technological advancement

It is therefore a total fallacy and myth, to suggest that market forces exclude government intervention.

So, until we get absolute and affordable substitutes for petrol and power, government intervention must continue to be a part of the market forces that should control their price, to attain the much desired market equilibrium.

Now that subsidy has been removed due to dwindling revenue and lack of capacity and competence to checkmate the inherent corruption and diversion, then government must be ready to acquire the capacity and competence to deploy the necessary infrastructural “palliatives” to cushion the effect of such removal. Cash transfers have other purposes, but definitely not for cushioning the effects of subsidy removal.

NNPC says it has sufficient fuel reserves for at least 32day-supply, yet in absolute negation of the law of demand and supply, petrol cost continue to rise. The reason cannot be overemphasized. The inelasticity would ensure excess supply of petrol does not have significant effect on its price, whereas shortage supply and scarcity, would only worsen the price. Therefore, we should not live in fools’ paradise by expecting the cost of petrol to crash with more players in the market. Only a crash in the aggregate cost of which that of crude oil is major, can crash the cost of petrol. The effect of market forces, other than government intervention, would be very weak.

Also, if and when gas becomes a perfect alternative to petrol, thereby making the demand for the latter more elastic, we must however not be disappointed, when the same market forces push up the price of gas, which now appears to be lower than that of petrol, plausibly because of its currently lower demand.

Results were manipulated for example in Rivers State, simply because they were not uploaded in real time.
