The Katsina Local Government Education Authority (LGEA) has closed down a private school inKatsina metropolis, Usulil Tabiyatul Badiwiya, for using itsclassrooms as poultry during vacations. Umar Falalu, the Education Secretary, ordered the closure on Monday when he visited the school. He said the closure of the school became necessary following reports that the school classrooms were turned into poultry farms during vacations. “We find out that the school authority is operating poultry inthe classrooms when the pupilsare vacation as you can see,” he said. He noted that the act of the school authority had violated the rules and regulations governing the operation of private schools and was, therefore, closed down indefinitely. According to him, poultry operation in the school can affect the health of the pupils and as such government would enforce appropriate sanctions. Mr. Falalu added that the school inspection is a continuous exercise. He called on private schools in the area to ensure strict compliance with the laid down rules as well as to renew their licenses to avoid embarrassment. He also urged private schools operating on temporary sites tomove to their permanent sites without delay. Mr. Falalu also advised parents to always make proper inquiries of schools before registering their wards into them. The officials of the affected school, however, declined to comment on the closure. http://premiumtimesng.com/news/97862-katsina-govt-closes-private-school-for-using-classrooms-as-poultry.html

According to newspaper reports, three women were arraigned before a Higher Shari’a Court in Gusau for allegedly raping a 20 year old man. The man, Abdulrahman Sulaiman, was a Man-O-Warvolunteer who went to the Women Multi-Purpose Center in Gusau to help organize a preaching session organized by the state’s Ministry of Women and Children’s Affairs for women during the holy month of Ramadan. According to the police prosecutors three women, Hannatu Ibrahim [23], Wosila Hassan [20] and Rukayya Hassan [21] conspired among themselves and serially raped Abdulrahman until he lost consciousness! How did this happen? The prosecutors said they lured him into a corner of the Women’s Centre, where they “forced” him to make love with themin turn until poor Abdulrahman fell unconscious. It was said that he was rushed to hospital, where he was later resuscitated. The three women have now been remanded in prison custody until Monday next week, when witnesses will be called to the court to testify against them. I suspect that half of Gusau town will turn up in court on that day to hear the evidence against the three “conspirators.” If the three women and the man in question actually did what they were alleged to have done 1] at a preaching session 2] during the month of Ramadan 3] when the centre was brimming with other women and children, then it will be a new low in religious morality in this part of the world. The evidence will however be very interesting and it may force this country’slawyers and jurists to have to rewrite the law on rape. Some years ago, I heard a senior lawyer say on television that the law on rape as it stands today does not envisage a woman raping a man, unless ifhe is a minor who is seduced by a much older woman. Otherwise, the lawyer said, “a woman cannot really rape a man because it requires his willing cooperation” to effect the act. It will be interesting to see if the witnesses will say Abdulrahman shouted for help while he was being raped. Or what the three women used to force his cooperation---a gun or a knife, for instance. Anatomically speaking, while a man can successfully rape a woman who is not cooperating but who goes limp at gunpoint, the same can hardly be said of the reverse case. A man who has a gun ora knife pointed at him and goes limp cannot be successfully raped! My only fear with this story is that many men in Gusau and around this Nigeria will wistfully wish that they were the ones that were raped. Mark you, the three alleged “conspirators” are young women hardly out of teen ages. They will find many willing takers in Gusau and elsewhere in Nigeria without resorting to any force! In fact, if someone were to call for male volunteers to be raped, in this Nigeria, the queues will be longer than the men who lined up at the Hisbah Office in Kano to marry widows and divorcees! http://www.nigerianeye.com/2012/08/20-year-old-man-raped-by-three-young.html |

Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika, has called for more recruitment into the Armed Forces to meet local andinternational security challenges facing the country, the News Agency of Nigeria reports. Ihejirika spoke in a lecture entitled, ‘Resource Diversification and Utilisation inthe Army for Human Security Management in Nigeria in the 21st century’ delivered at the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies inJos on Wednesday. The speech was delivered on his behalf by Maj.-Gen Jack Nwogbo, the GOC, 3 Div,NA, Rukuba, Jos. Ihejirika said, “The need for expansion of the Nigerian Army to meet contemporary challenges cannot be overlooked; some new units are being created and such units require personnel. “This requires, therefore, that the Nigerian Army must recruit and train more soldiers toward greater efficiency inresource utilisation and ensure that the units have adequate rest and recuperation at all times after operation.” Pointing out that the population size and threats facing a nation usually determine the strength of its armed forces, the COAS noted that there were massive recruitments into the army during the civil war. He said, “Immediately after the war, the Nigerian army had to downsize its strength in tune with post-war realities. “Since then, recruitment into the Army, though consistent, has been conservative, since there were no apparent threats, both internally and externally. “However, the demand for the involvement of the Nigerian Army in containing security threats within and outside Nigeria, has increased since the 1990s. “Nigeria has been in Liberia for two decades and in Sudan since 2004, while troops are being prepared to be deployedin Mali and Guinea Bissau. “All these demands, coupled with internalsecurity problems, have stretched the Army to a great extent; the result is that practically every army unit is engaged and there is no redundancy or reserve to cater for rest and recuperation of troops.’’ Meanwhile, the COAS has urged unit commanders to be creative in their dutiesto move the Army forward. Ihejirika said this in Ibadan on Wednesdayat the inauguration of a new office complex and facility at 525 Signal Regiment, Letmauck Cantonment, Mokola. http://www.nigerianeye.com/2012/08/we-need-more-soldiers-to-tackle.html

The Ogun State Government has expressed concern that not less than 25,000 cattle are being brought into its territory by Fulani herdmen via Benin Republic and Northern Nigeria. The state commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Muyiwa Oladipo, raised the alarm in Abeokuta during a peace meeting with herdsmen and community leaders. Mr. Oladipo did not say how he arrived at the figure he cited. He however noted that the influx of cattle in the state was a result of its rich pasture, but quickly added that government will check the influx. Mr. Oladipo said the government would establish a strong control post and monitoring task force to checkmate the mass movement of cattle from neighbouring Republic of Benin and other neighbouring countries. The meeting however noted that the state government should create grazing zones across the state for the animals. The commissioner said government had taken drastic measures to avert looming clashes between farmers and herdsmen in the state. However, a consensus was reached at the meeting that government should support nomadic schools that would promote formal education and reduce the use of child labour by herdsmen. It was also agreed that government should recognise the Seriki Fulanis as part of the Local Government Security Council, to give them a sense of belonging. The Commissioner informed participants at the meeting thatthe state government was determined to prevent an outbreak of law and order in any part of the state. especiallybetween farmers and Fulani herdsmen. The state, he said is also committed to promoting peaceful cohabitation, tolerance, mutual understanding and brotherliness among the two communities. He called on them to shun any act capable of fuelling the crises in their settlements by remaining law abiding. The commissioner advised the two communities to always hold regular peace meetings where outstanding disputes areamicably resolved. The Yoruba monarchs from Yewaland, Seriki Fulanis, among other stakeholders across the state, appreciated the timely intervention of the state government at resolving the lingering crises through several peace meetings and committees. They assured the government of their readiness to accept the resolutions of the meeting. http://premiumtimesng.com/news/97149-ogun-worried-over-invasion-of-territory-by-25000-cattle.html

Iran has banned women from 77 university courses, labeling classes in everything from English literature to biology as"single gender." Thirty-six Iranian universities are participating in the ban, which will make many higher-education classes exclusive to men as of next academic year, the Telegraph reported . Iranian human rights activist and Nobel laureate Shirin Ebadi has written a letter of complaintabout the ban to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay. "[It] is part of the recent policy of the Islamic Republic, which tries to return women to the private domain inside the homeas it cannot tolerate their passionate presence in the public arena," Ebadi wrote in the letter, which was also sent to Ahmad Shaheed, the UN's special rapporteur for human rights in Iran. "The aim is that women will give up their opposition and demands for their own rights," she continued. Iran's senior clerics support the ban over concerns that increased education for women are causing social side effects such as declining birth and marriage rates, the International Herald Tribune reported . The new laws come as female students in Iran have been outperforming men at the academic level: three women passed this year's university entrance exams for every two men who passed, Ynetnews reported . Women currently make up about 60 percent of university students in the country, the NewYork Times reported . The courses that are closed off to women are incredibly varied, according to Iranian news site Rooz Online : Urban development engineering, urban development with a major in surveillance at 15 universities had the largest number of students reserved only for men.Following that came management and mining engineering programs in 12 universities which only admitted men to them. But academic subjects that are denied to women are not restricted to these and others such as accounting, education fields, restoration of historic buildings, pure chemistry etc are also shut to women. “Some fields are not very suitable for women’s nature,” said Abolfazl Hasani, a senior Iranian education official, according to Rooz Online. http://www.globalpost.com/dispatch/news/regions/middle-east/iran/120820/iran-bans-women-university-degree-courses

According to reports on Friday, Muslim Brotherhood supporters scourged and crucified secular protesters in Egypt’s capital city of Cairo. Using the same punishments described in Bible as having been inflicted on Jesus, Brotherhood backed mobs rampaged through the streets, seizing protesters against the Islamist government of Mohammad Morsi, and dragging secularjournalists from their offices. Their victims were beaten, scourged with whips, and crucified naked on trees. The Arab Spring takeover of Egypt by the Muslim Brotherhood has run amok, with reports from several different media agencies that the radical Muslims have begun crucifying opponents of newly installed President Mohammed Morsi. Middle East media confirm that during a recent rampage, Muslim Brotherhood operatives “crucified those opposing Egyptian President Muhammad Morsi naked on trees in front of the presidentialpalace while abusing others.” Raymond Ibrahim, a fellow with the Middle East Forum and the Investigative Project on Terrorism, said the crucifixions are the product of who the Middle Eastern media call “partisans.” “Arabic media call them ‘supporters,’ ‘followers’ and ‘partisans’ of the Muslim Brotherhood,” Ibraham said. Ibrahim also says the victims can be anyone, including Egyptian Christians. “It’s anyone who is resisting the new government,” Ibrahim said. “In this particular case, the people attacked and crucified were secular protesters upset because of Morsi’s hostile campaign against the media, especially of Tawfik Okasha, who was constantly exposing himon his station, until Morsi shut him down.” Ibrahim said extra brutality is reserved forChristians, but the crucifixions are because of Islamic doctrine and are required by the Quran. The time and other details about the crucifixions were not readily available. Center for Security Policy Senior Fellow Clare Lopez cited chapter and verse from the Quran to explain that crucifixions are not simply normal for Islam, they’re demanded. “Crucifixion is a hadd punishment, stipulated in the Quran, Sura 5:33, and therefore an obligatory part of Shariah,” Lopez said. “It’s been a traditional punishment within Islam since the beginning, even though it’s not exclusively Islamic. The Romans used it too. “So, the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood haven’t the option to not include crucifixion within their legal code. It’s obligatory to comply with Shariah. And yes, it’s for shock value also to be sure,” Lopez said. Lopez includes a warning for Egypt’s Christians and compares the coming treatment of the Christians to the Jews in Germany. “The Copts must get out of Egypt as soon as possible – for the many millions who will not be able to get out, I expect thingswill continue to deteriorate – just as they did for Germany’s and Europe’s Jews fromthe 1930s onward,” Lopez said. “The warnings were there long before theghettos and round-ups and one-way train trips to the concentration camps began inthe 1940s,” she said. If you think this is just an Egyptian problem, you’re wrong. Dead wrong.Read “Muslim Mafia: Inside the Secret Underworld That’s Conspiringto Islamize America” Author Pamela Geller of Atlas Shrugs, an analyst of the Middle East and Islam, fully agrees and also cites the Quran. “The Christians are in serious trouble, because the Quran in Sura 9:29 commands Muslims to wage war against them and subjugate them, and they’re also identified with the hated West and the U.S.,” Geller said. Geller also turned to Sura 5:33. Islamic hardliners “These are Islamic hardliners who do everything by the Quran. The Quran says,‘Indeed, the penalty for those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger and strive upon earth [to cause] corruption is none but that they be killed or crucified or that their hands and feet be cut off from opposite sides or that they be exiledfrom the land,” Geller said. International Christian Concern’s Middle East analyst Aidan Clay believes there is arelationship between the recent attacks on the regime’s enemies, a recent Sinai military skirmish and Morsi’s moves against the ranking generals. The “Sinai skirmish” involved suspected Hamas guerrillas trying to cross into Gaza from Egypt. The Israeli Defense Force andintelligence learned of the attempted crossing in advance and stopped the incursion. Sixteen Egyptian border guardswere killed in the attempted Rafah bordercrossing incident. “It’s hard to believe that President Morsi could have dismissed Field Marshall Mohammed Tantawi without the help of lower-ranking military officers. The military’s sense of prestige, which millionsof Egyptians still take great pride in, took a battering following the militant attack inSinai that killed 16 soldiers,” Clay said. “The military should have been prepared for the attack. Israel was. And the blame has largely been placed on Tantawi for hisnegligence and for embarrassing the military establishment,” he said. Lopez agrees that Israel’s preparedness isa slap against the Egyptian army. “That border skirmish that resulted in deaths of Egyptian border guards was known ahead of time by Israeli intelligence, which warned their Egyptian military counterparts,” Lopez said. She notes that Israeli intelligence avoidedcontact with the Muslim Brotherhood in the incident because the attacks were a Hamas plot. Lopez added that even after notification, the Egyptian army didn’t act. “The Egyptian military did nothing, even as Israel expected. Thus the attack was carried out, Israel was totally prepared and responded and the result was Egyptian military deaths,” Lopez said. Responding to ‘crisis’ She added that Morsi wasted no time in responding to the “crisis.” “Morsi jumped on the incident as the perfect reason to purge the top ranks of the Egyptian military, install his own MB-sympathizers in positions across the top, chief of staff and intel chief,” she said. “Some call it an internal coup d’etat – and I agree. It put Morsi in sole control of the legislative branch (there is no parliament right now) and in control of the political power in Egypt. The new defense minister is a Muslim Brotherhood sympathizer. Things are moving very fast.” Clay said there are mixed feelings among the military top brass in Egypt. He said some still support Tantawi; some have called for change. “While many senior military officers maintained their support for Tantawi, his reputation took a dive among many younger officers who saw the need for a replacement. It wasn’t just the attack in Sinai that led to this, but the military’s reputation has been on the decline since a few months following the country’s uprising early last year,” Clay said. “For some, the Sinai attack was the final straw and Morsi may have viewed it as anopportune time to remove Tantawi and other high-ranking officers from key positions,” Clay said. He noted that Morsi, not the military, tookthe lead in responding to the Sinai attacks. “In doing so, while also forcing Tantawi out of his cabinet, Morsi has set a precedent that it is he who decides who runs the army,” Clay said. “While the generals will still advise Morsi, he can decide whether or not to listen to them. It’s apparent that Morsi is quickly becoming Egypt’s sole leader which means control of the country will be in the hands of the Muslim Brotherhood,” hesaid. http://www.nigerianeye.com/2012/08/egyptian-govt-muslim-brotherhood.html
