Politics › ‘zamfara Spent N376m To Subsidise Hajj’ by gramci(op): 9:16am On Aug 09, 2012
Each of the 5,570 intending pilgrims for this year’s Hajj exercise to Saudi Arabia from Zamfara State got a subsidy of N67,500 from the state government, Executive Secretary of Zamfara Pilgrims Welfare Board Alhaji Lawal Abubakar Mafara has said. He said the subsidy is in the area of accommodation in Medina and Mecca.
The executive secretary also announced the remittance by the board of N2.2 billion to the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) as fares for intending pilgrims from the state.
Briefing newsmen on the level of preparedness for the exercise in Gusau yesterday, Mafara said with the subsidy, male intending pilgrims from the state paid maximum and minimum fares of N658,681 and N622,431 respectively while female pilgrims paid maximum and minimum fares of N659,681 and N623,431 respectively. He said female intending pilgrims paid higher because of their uniforms.
“The subsidy was in the area ofaccommodation we secured very close to the Masjid Haram. The state government paid 1,500 Riyals for each intending pilgrim of the state and that was how we arrived at this hajj fares. In addition to this, the state government has accepted to shoulder the responsibility of transportation of the pilgrims from Gusau to the airport in Sokoto,” he said.
Reacting to a report that former sole administrators of the 14 local government areas of the state squandered moneyof intending pilgrims from theirrespective areas, he said his board had not officially received the complaint.
He said his board had officially applied to NAHCON for 500 additional seats to meet the higher demand for them in the state.

Politics › Sea Pirates Kill MD Of Tompolo’s Firm by gramci(op): 8:36am On Aug 09, 2012
SUSPECTED sea pirates have killed Captain Romeo Itima, Managing Director of Global West Vessel Specialist Limited, an oil bunkering surveillance company owned by ex-militant leader, Government Ekpemupolo, alias Tompolo.
The company was contracted by the Federal Government to provide security and monitor the nation’s coastal waters against oil thieves.
It was gathered that master mariner, Itima, who was in pursuit of oil thieves in Escravos , area of Warri Pilotage District, was killed by suspected sea pirates on Tuesday.
A source told Vanguard, “The team from Global West Vessel Specialist did not know that they were sea pirates in the ship and were approaching thevessel in the course of their duty, when the pirates opened fire on them.
“Itima did not die immediately,as the company’s boat was bullet proof, but the pirates shattered the windscreen of the boat, which forced them to make a detour and crashed into stone breaker. Unfortunately, there was roughtide at that time, which swept away the boat and caused his death,” the source said.
The family in a statement by Captain Winifred Itima, said, “His death occurred during an operation against theft of crude oil and criminal sea robbery activities in the Warri Pilotage District.”

Politics › Boko Haram: Arrest Ciroma, Lawal Kaita – Clark by gramci(op): 7:34am On Aug 09, 2012
ELDER statesman and prominent Ijaw leader, Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, yesterday, stoked his campaign against Northern leaders over the activities of Boko Haram by asking securityagencies to go after former Minister of Finance, Mallam Adamu Ciroma and former Governor of Kaduna State, Alhaji Lawal Kaita.
The former Federal Informationcommissioner, who challenged former President Ibrahim Babamasi Babangida to a joint public debate on national issues to ascertain who is actually senseless or senile, insisted that northern leaders must speak out on the activities of Boko Haram if theywere not backing the group.
Reading a prepared text on behalf of Chief Edwin Clark at aPress briefing inAbujayesterday, Legal Adviser to the Ijaw leader, Kayode Ajulo, said that Ciroma and Kaita’s comments before the massive killings could serve as substantial evidence against them.
The E.K Clark statement
The text read in part: “Chief Clark’s challenge to the leaders of the North is predicated on the misguided statements of some of the Northern opinion leaders since the inception of this administration. For example, inOctober, 2010 during a build up to the last presidential election, Alhaji Lawal Kaita, a prominent Northern leader promised to makeNigeriaungovernable if the President did not come from the North.
Chief Edwin Clark
“And as if on cue from Lawal Kaita, several other leaders of Northern Political Leaders Forum, headed by Alhaji Adamu Ciroma, of which Gen. Babangida is a prominent member, followed suit with similar reckless comments which might not only threaten peace in Nigeria but also Nigeria’s very existence.
“Recently in March this year, Lawal Kaita issued another threat to the effect that the only condition forNigeriato be one is for the presidency to come to the North in 2015.”
According to Clark, northern leaders must show genuine commitment, be proactive and speak out now towards addressing the challenges posed by the Boko Haram insurgency against the backdrop that precious lives of Nigerians were being wasted daily across the country in Borno, Yobe, Sokoto, Kano, Katsina, Kogi, Abuja and Bauchi among others.
On General Babangida’s reaction to his public lecture last Wednesday, particularly where it was alleged that senses had since departed him,Clarksaid that the public debate or discourse with Babangida must be free of interference and prompting from aides.
He added: “Let it also be noted, for the record, that Chief Clark delivered a one hour, 20 minutes lecture very coherently and articulately without having to refer to a written text. Nigerians stand a better position to judge as to who is senseless or senile as suggested by Gen. Babangida who can only make public utterances through texts prepared by aides and speech writers.”
Insisting that the former military president was side-stepping comments on Boko Haram,Clarkurged Nigerians to ask why he had been silent for so long on the issue.
How it all started
The exchange of brick-bats between Clark and Babangida started last week Wednesday when Clark at theSecondStateof the Federation Lecture organised by the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, NIALSinAbujaclaimed that some northern leaders were not speaking out against increasing spate of violence in the country.
He had specifically challenged Babangida and former Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari to condemn the activities of the Boko Haram group that have claimed responsibility for the insurgency campaign in many parts of the country.
But replying the elder statesman on Sunday through his spokesman, Prince Kassim Afegbua, Babangida slammed Clark for not recognizing the historic role he played in unifying the country, just as hewarned Clark not to crucify him, adding that with his age, what should be the cardinal posture of Chief Clark was to proffer solutions to the problem of insecurity in the country.
According to Babangida, “we view this misguided and senseless statement in very bad taste and we take very strong exceptions to his drooling and implied conclusion.”
Countering yesterday, the elder statesman, who described Babangida’s statement as total insult and total misconceptions, said, “the statements showed nothing but insulting miscomprehension and misconception of Chief E. K. Clark’s innocuous expressed opinions and the challenge thrown down to the leaders of the North on the need to resolve the Boko Haram menace.
“Ordinarily, Gen. Babangida should have joined many otherNigerians who applauded ChiefE. K. Clark for crying out over the wanton loss of lives being experienced daily over the senseless killings ofNigeria’s women and children, Christiansand Muslims alike.
“Chief E. K. Clark is committed to the unity ofNigeriaand peace within its borders. This was aptly demonstrated when some youths in the Niger Deltatook arms against the Federal Government of Nigeria, resulting in the near total shut down of oil production; crude oil production which normally stood at 2.5 million barrels per day was reduced to 700, 000 barrels daily. Chief Clark led a delegation of Niger Delta leaders into the creeks to appeal to the youths to lay down arms and embrace peace.

I find it difficult to understand why stu.pity (no insult meant) is rampant among Northern leaders. Why is it that when ever they are opportune to profer solutions to the numerous problems bedevilling the country they always come up with ridiculous demands and explanations.

Its becomes more annoying when those spitting trash happens to be in position to know better. If its not Lamido Sanusi blaming the revenue allocated to Niger Delta as the cause of North's problems, it will be Prof. Ango Abdullahi coming up with bogus statistics just to deceive people. Its a known fact that Northerners dominates the Federal Civil Service, but the prof. wants us to believe they are only 18% in FG employ.

Since the they have subjected themselves to self induced amnesia for whatever reason, time will come when the disparity between Northern Nigeria and Southern Nigeria will be akin to that of the Korea's.

Politics › Beggars Protest Ban In Lagos by gramci(op): 1:14pm On Aug 07, 2012
Beggars in Lagos State on Monday temporarily halted activities at the state secretariat, Alausa and the House of Assembly as they protested against alleged harassment by government officials and plan to bar them from operating in the state
They also expressed their displeasure at the poor state ofthe government’s Rehabilitation Centre at Owutu,Ikorodu.
The beggars, who were mainly of the northern extraction, carried placards and chanted solidarity songs. They blocked the main entrance to the secretariat, causing gridlock.
They later moved to the assembly where they prevented motorists from entering the complex.
Their spokesperson, Hassan Zakariwa, said the protest was to let the public know about their plight and how government officials had been arresting them.
He alleged that at many of their members were being detained at the rehabilitation centre under inhuman condition.
Zakariwa further alleged that some of the beggars, who could not withstand the inhuman treatments meted outto them at the camp, paid N45,500 each before they were released.
He said, “The money is usually paid into government’s account at Zenith Bank. The place they called a rehabilitation centre was actually a prison yard.
“About 63 to 65 people are putin one room. We are telling thegovernment to treat us as human beings and not animals.”
The beggars in a statement also accused the government of planning to bar them from street begging.
The statement signed by Zakariwa read in part, “First, our movement within Lagos State metropolis has been restricted; such that anyone caught roaming on the road will be taken to a prison in Ikorodu (Rehabilitation Centre). At the prison, belongings of those arrested will be seized and they will be maltreated by the management.
“Above all, it has come to our notice that very soon, anybodyfound giving alms to us will be apprehended and jailed for twoyears.
“We are handicapped, even the able bodied men, graduates cannot get jobs to do. We cannot survive without begging for alms. We don’t force people to give us alms but we cannot understand why the government is interested inbanning alms begging in the state.”
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, Major Tunde Panox (retd.) later addressed them.
He said their complaints and the allegations would be investigated.
“I assure you, these allegationswould be tabled before the governor later today (Monday).Right now, the governor cannot meet you because the State Executive Council meeting is on and it won’t end until evening,” Panox said.

Politics › Northern Governors’ Poor-mind Syndrome by gramci(op): 12:12pm On Aug 06, 2012
By Ochereomen Nnanna
POVERTY starts in the mind before it manifests in the pocket. A poor-minded person does not know how to produce results with money. Even if yougive him lots of money he simply does the easiest thing in the world: spend it.
A multi-billionaire once said even if he gives all his money to the poor he will get it all back in no time because he knows how make money and the poor only knows how to spend it.
Poverty in Northern Nigeria comes as a result of the typicalpoor mindset of its leaders.
The masses of the north, especially those who are of sound mind and body, are veryhard working. They strive very hard as farmers, cattle rearers, artisans, traders and menial workers especially in urban areas down south. But the leadership depends on the government and the state for their upkeep. This is what some describe as “parasitism”.
Each time the Northern Elders Forum or Arewa Consultative Forum or Northern Governors Forum meets, their primary interest is not about exploring avenues to move the north andNigeria forward. They are not looking for solution to the terrorism that has crippled the economy of the north, or to solve communal conflicts on the Plateau and other areas of the north.
Future of the South South
They are not setting up strategies for regional cooperation as we see in the south, where you have the BRACED (Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Delta and Edo) Commission planning the future of the South-South beyond oil.
The South East Economic Summit Group (SEESG) is pressing ahead to create a viable economy to reduce the Diaspora syndrome, while the South West is focused on the regional integration efforts of its governors.
But each time northern leadersmeet, it is always to (a) torpedo every effort to bring about change and progress, and (b) ask for more money from the federal till.
The recent meeting of the Northern Governors’ Forum in Abuja was typical and ended with a predictable outcome. The same governors that did not raise any objection when the Nigerian Governors Forum unanimously agreed that the constitution should be amended to provide for state police suddenly reneged. They now want the state Police Commissioners to take orders from the governors rather thanthe Inspector General of Police!
They were so blinded by their zest to back out of the resolution reached with their peers that they did not see the preposterousness of their new stand. When you want the Commissioners of Police to take orders from the governorsrather than the IG, you are in effect, asking for state police! The governors will use the Police to do their bidding while the federal government will still foot the bill, and in the process, the orderly command structure of the Police is destroyed.
After torpedoing the agreement (what
I call the Aburi syndrome) they turned their attention to their pet motive for their meetings: asking for more oil money. Thenorthern governors would wantthe onshore/offshore to be “revisited”. They are envious of the 13 per cent derivation that goes to oil-rich Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Delta and Bayelsa every month. They conveniently forget that while the military was in power, theyhad used states and local governments to give the north more than their share of the same oil money that basically belongs to the Niger Delta.
They gave the north enough federal constituencies to constitute stumbling blocks to any attempt to make new lawsor amend the constitution for the change the country needs.
The present crop of northern leaders
does not have the type of mindset that can solve the problems of the north, let alone Nigeria. Arewa political leaders squander Niger Delta’soil money given them to improve the lives of their people. They spend money frivolously on sponsorship of weddings, pilgrimages and religious education that does not equip its products with skills for useful self-reliance but instead breeds products that disrupt the system. Governors appoint thousands of aides rather than focus on developments that benefit the society. They steal the people’s money and use only asmall fraction of it to feed the poor during Ramadan.
But there is hope. Whenever I listen to the Arewa Consultative Youth Forum (ACYF) I am encouraged to believe that once this generation of mis-leaders phases away the future of the north is bright. I take this quotecredited to the ACYF which Joe Igbokwe used to anchor an article he wrote on March 20, 2012:
Deliberate manipulation
“Northerners and the world need an explanation as to whatled to the rot (the North) is (in) today. It was not magic but man-made as a result of deliberate manipulation of religion, self-enrichment, and pervasive corruption our leaders adopted to the detriment of the larger peoplesof the North”
The North was in power for a total of 37 years and imposed poverty, not only on Nigerians but more so on the northern people. The current elite presided over several oil booms and yet left the country wretched and backward, with the north even more so. There is no justification for power to be entrusted in their hands again. And there is no ground to increase their share of federal money.
But as soon as the current Arewa youth enters the leadership plane with renewed, progressive mindset, the Northand the South will come together to build a new Nigeriawhere all Nigerians will be happy and proud to belong. Happily, the young are already growing and the moment is notfar-off.

Politics › Oyerinde Murder: ACN Seeks Probe Of SSS Over Paraded Suspects by gramci(op): 7:16am On Aug 06, 2012
The Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) has called on the Presidency and the National Assembly to urgently investigate claims by the State Security Service (SSS) that it has arrested the suspected killers of Mr. Olaitan Oyerinde, a senior aide to Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole.
In a statement issued in Lagos yesterday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said it was compelled to make the callfollowing the riddle posed by two pictures carried by a national newspaper yesterday, which seemed to show that the security agency might be recycling the same suspected criminals for different offences.
It said the three suspects in the first picture, who were paraded by the SSS on March 14 for allegedly kidnapping and murdering a Briton, ChristopherMacManus and an Italian, Franco Lamolinara, in Sokoto, appeared to be the same as three of the suspects in the second picture, who were recently paraded by the same SSS for allegedly killing Oyerinde.
“Three of the suspects paraded by the SSS for killing Oyerinde appear to wear a complete replica of the same shirts worn by the suspects paraded for killing the foreigners in March.
“The pictures, published by the newspaper, are so compelling that we are forced to ask a number of questions from the SSS. Is the agency recycling suspected criminals and deceiving the people that it is indeed solving criminal cases? Does this systemic gimmick go higher than the security agency? For how long has this game been going on? What exactly does the government know about this? And is the PDPprivy to this recycling? If not, why was the party so quick to ask the ACN to apologise over the murder of Oyerinde?” ACN queried.
The party said the only way the riddle could be resolved was forthe government to appoint a panel of respected judicial officers to investigate the SSS, while the National Assembly must conduct a public hearing at which the suspects paraded for killing the foreigners would be placed side by side with those paraded for killing Oyerinde.
“The reason it is important to get to the root of the whole case is because the role of the SSS is so critical in ensuring peace and security in the country. For example, the Federal Government has relied largely on the agency to curtail the activities of the Boko Haram.
“If the agency has been cooking up stories and briefingsto government and recycling criminals, how can it satisfactorily play its role? How can it help in resolving the many high profile murders that have been recorded in the country?
“Is it that once any case cannotbe resolved or points to government’s suspected involvement, the SSS rounds upsome scallywags and parades them to the media, only for the case to go cold? What has become of the suspects paraded in March for allegedly killing the foreigners?”
ACN said the sooner the government and the legislature get to the bottom of the allegation now facing the SSS, the better for the agency in particular and the country in general, because the moment the people lose confidence in the SSS, the agency can no longer play its complementary role to the other security agencies in ensuring peace andsecurity in the country.

Chinese miner owners endanger Zambian miners, according to a new report by Human Rights Watch. Chinese labor practices have been an issue in Zambia for several years. Here Zambia police officers protesters from demonstrating in front of the Chinese Embassy in Lusaka on October 19, 2010 after 13 Zambian miners were allegedly shot by two Chinese managers.

Zambian coal miners killed a Chinese mine manager during aprotest, Agence France-Presse reported . The mineworkers were rioting during a strike at the Chinese-owned Collum Coal mine in Sinazongwe, demanding to be paid at least$220 a month. Mine manager Wu Shengzai, 50, was killed as he tried to run away from protesters and seek refuge underground. The protesters pushed a trolley at him and he died on the spot, the AFP reported. "I don't understand why there is always tension between Chinese investors and workers at Collum," Labor Minister Fackson Shamenda told the AFP.
The workers were angry because they were being paid less than minimum wage, BBC News reported . The Zambian government last month raised the minimum wage to $220 a month for workers, but the new minimum wage had not been implemented yet at the Collum Coal mine.
More from GlobalPost: Whenthe BRICs crumble
Chinese companies have invested more than $1 billion in copper-rich Zambia, Reuters reported , but Zambian workers accuse the firms of abusing andunderpaying their workers. The protest comes after a damning Human Rights Watch investigation was released last November. Human Rights Watch found that "Chinese-run copper mining companies in Zambia routinely flout labor laws and regulations designed to protect workers’ safety."
And in 2010, two Chinese supervisors at the Collum coal mine were charged with attempted murder, after 13 Zambian miners were shot.
