Entrepreneurs around the world deserve commendation. They take risks where others fear to tread, they think out of the box, they are not afraid to try new ventures, and they are usually champions of innovation. In a developing country such as Nigeria, the risk is even greater as entrepreneurs assume all the risks and rewards of launching a new business. The high degree of initiative required to manage any enterprise goes to show that entrepreneurship is no mean feat.

Many times, entrepreneurs find themselves struggling in a competitive market. From a business point of view, it’s a case of dog-eat-dog, and the entrepreneur is faced with two major challenges – the need for continuous innovation and the need to maintain enough stability in a rapidly changing environment.

There is a steep learning curve between starting a business and keeping that business alive.

In Nigeria, small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs) make up 96% of businesses, according to a survey conducted by the International Finance Corporation (IFC). A study carried out by the Federal Office of Statistics places this figure at 97%. However, they contribute to only approximately 48% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

How Is Branding Relevant to An Entrepreneur?

Simply put, as an entrepreneur, your brand is your promise to your customer. It tells customers what to expect from your products and services, and it differentiates your offering from your competitors’.

Your brand strategy is how, where, when and to whom you plan on communicating and delivering your brand messages.

Where you advertise is also part of your brand strategy, as are your communication distribution channels. What you communicate visually and verbally is important too.

An effective brand strategy gives you a major edge in competitive markets. Consistent, strategic branding leads to strong brand equity. Brand equity is the added perceived value bestowed on your products or services that allows you to charge more for your brand than what identical, unbranded products command.

How Should Entrepreneurs Brand Their Businesses?

Defining your brand is like a journey of business self-discovery. It can be difficult, time-consuming and uncomfortable. It requires, at the very least, that you answer the following questions:

1. What is your company's mission?
2. What are the benefits and features of your products or services?
3. What do your customers and prospects already think of your company?
4. What qualities do you want them to associate with your company?
5. Do your research. Learn the needs, habits and desires of your current and prospective customers. And don't rely on what you think they think. Find out.
In branding a business, it is also important that entrepreneurs find a “voice” that reflects their business. This “voice” should be applied to all written communication and be incorporated into the visual imagery of all materials relating to the business.

The “voice” should be reflected in the attitude and disposition of all who represent the business. For example, an enterprise with a performing customer service team can be said to be projecting a reliable and efficient “voice”.

There should be a clearly defined vision and mission which drives the operations of the enterprise. To cite a Nigerian example, Guaranty Trust Bank, a leading financial institution, identified a number of problems in Nigeria’s banking sector, and set up shop with the aim of restoring the ethos of service in the banking industry. Today, the bank has positioned itself as Nigeria’s favourite bank for millennials. Guaranty Trust Bank emphasises customer service, visual brand standards and technology.

What Can Be Gathered from All This?
From the thoughts highlighted above, there are a few pointers that budding entrepreneurs should pay attention to:
a) Identify the needs of the market as well as the general perception of the product you are selling.
b) Define your target audience and niche.
c) Have a carefully laid-out mission and vision that guide the business.
d) Develop a “voice” that reflects the direction and spirit of the enterprise.
e) Draw up an efficient strategy that communicates that voice consistently across multiple platforms.

In conclusion, every business needs a brand identity to achieve all-round success in a market that is never short of competition. Every enterprise must have that distinguishing feature that sets it apart from others who provide similar services. From logos to taglines to standards of service, creating a brand identity is necessary to avoid getting lost in the crowd of businesses and service providers.

If many people in this country could take out a moment to sit down and review their standards of living, they will come to the realization that their complaints about poverty, unemployment and inability to take care of themselves in their present situation was actually their own making.

Owing to the fact that Banana farming is the most neglected farming in Nigeria, it is one aspect of farming that is promising and has profitable potentials than most other farming one can venture into. The most basic thing you need to begin your banana farm is knowledge which happens to be most useful and effective when applied and useless and ineffective when ignored. As a banana farmer you can be making five hundred thousand naira (N500,000) or more on a monthly basis just from your banana and plantain plantation if you place it in a commercial standard.

I know of a University student called Dayo who has no sponsor to help him through the tertiary institution, but having the will to succeed and a little portion of land he inherited from his parents, he discovered how lucrative banana farming could be and then sought out knowledge on how to properly farm banana and plantain.

In this article I will be telling you the steps he took to becoming successful in banana farming.

• First Step Taken
The first thing my friend Dayo did was to gain knowledge on banana plantation. Since he didn’t have much money to pay for training, he decided to follow a banana farmer to cultivate his plantation. After few months, he gained basic knowledge of what to do and how to do it, and virtually all his questions about farming banana were answered in the process of his training.

After his training, Dayo made a plan of how to go about his plantation and academics. This signifies that banana farming won’t ask you to quit your present job, or stop your education, you could actually do both together without one hindering another. His plan covered questions like what are the things he need for his plantation, how could he get what he needed, what are his expected output and profit? And so many other questions were carefully answered after in depth research and documented. This was my friends first step to farming banana.

• Second Step Taken
The second step to farming banana is land procurement. If you can’t afford to buy one, you can partner with a farmer or rent a farmland that is not been cultivated.

Although land procurement happens to be the next step, my friend got lucky because he already inherited a portion of land, so he moved on to step three.

In procuring the land you need to consider the climate condition of the environment. It has been discovered that banana plantations thrive very well in an average climate, that is a climate that is not too hot nor too cold. Also they do grow well in soil that is naturally fertilized or thick compost manure. You can also consider surrounding your plantation with tall trees so as to provide your banana with needed shades that is going to help maintain the humidity of their surroundings.

• Third Step Taken
After procuring your land you need to prepare the land for farming activity. So the very first thing to do is clearing the land. Your purpose of clearing your land is to create more space for planting, make the land convenient for planting; to remove bush, stumps, stones and trees from the soil you intend to plant bananas and plantain. Basically land clearing helps you to boost the productivity of the plantation.


• Fourth Step Taken
This is the step where you acquire the suckers you will be planting. Getting a good sucker is very important as it’s an prerequisite for making a good harvest. Banana is not planted like every other plant where you just drop some seed into the ground and it survives and starts growing, rather you get suckers not seeds for your prepared farm land.

After the suckers must have been acquired the next thing to do is transplanting, the sucker usually have corm at the bottom during transplanting be sure that the corm or the roots at the bottom is trimmed properly before planting. Make a space of about 8 to 10 meters between planted suckers and keep them moist.

• Fifth Step Taken
As your banana grows, you need to manage them properly by clearing weeds around them. Weed clearing gives room to proper growth health of the banana and elimination of every growth threat the banana might face. As plantain grows in the plantation you should device means of protecting it from strong wind, also cultivate the habit of throwing dead plantain or banana leaves back into the soil of the plantation, doing this keep the plantain well nourished.

Your plantation will be ready in about 13-15 months from time of planting, after harvest you do not have to plant another suckers, as you harvest the matured suckers other suckers spring up by itself, continuously you plantation will last for 15 to 20 years without need to plant another sucker.

These are the basic steps that made my friend Dayo to be self sustained in school and after school.

It seems like a humiliation, but THINK before acting. Without a confirmed job with similar or better prospects, don't make the leap.


My immediate boss was practically caught profiting at expense of the organisation. He was demoted. The kind of pay he was collecting then, at age 39 (1.5 million monthly) , it's hard for him to get in another place except in Oil & Gas.

He stayed, the person who became his boss left for somewhere else. My boss took his former position...in fact he has gotten a promotion he has always dreamed of

Moral of the story....stay a while and find out why you were demoted. Maybe you lack something that might still be a disadvantage to you anywhere you go. LEARN.
While learning, be checking vacancies. No organization worldwide has YOUR interests at heart. They have THEIR own interests. When you have something better, resign with a smile, saying their company is the best in the world, BUT, you have to go because "..insert reason..."

You might still meet your Boss later on the professional ladder. Always part in good terms.

Besides....YOU internally assess yourself as more capable, but you just got an external assessment. This might sound harsh, but maybe, just perhaps, you are not the hotshot you think you are?

I remembered when my dad was in the ministry ...he was notoriously against the management. ..all his colleagues n junior colleagues loved dat about him! ... If he even said the director was stupid in his remark ...he will still say it in his front n defend it! ...there was dis confidence!

My mom always warned him but since me n my brothers always laugh whenever he repeats wat he had done in his office in a comical way! ... He continued! ...

His boss was later transfered (based on management decision nt by my dad's actions) n a new director was brought in ...very friendly boss! ...but the thing was when he was leaving the office the transferred boss met wit my dad's new boss to influence him to choose a new director whom was a junior to my dad even when my dad was the most qualified Senior colleague to be passed the Barton!

My dad heard dat his appointment was about to be given to Yinka his junior colleague thru his boss driver ... He was invited by his boss d next day for a meeting ... My dad carried yinka his junior colleague along ...N:B the meeting was not about the appointment issue ...it was just a random meeting!

My dad having discussed wit his boss ...invited yinka inside n told his boss that he has been thinking that since he would b leaving in a few months ...the ministry should b left in good hands ...in yinka's hands! ... Yinka was not aware of anything so he was quite surprised! ...including the boss! ...he was asked why?

My dad mentioned dat he has noticed yinka ...n even though his is senor he has always wanted to b like yinka ...cool headed, honest ,humble n very good at making quick decisions! ...my Dad told us yinka was blushing not knowing my dad was trying 2 pull a HOUSE OF CARDS MOVE on him!

His boss was arguing against yinka being put in charge trying 2 pretend dat he wasn't going 2 put yinka since he has been influenced! ...but my dad kept on insisting n supported his argument that youths should be encouraged to lead! ...n he later ended with stating dat Mr yinka is d best candidate here ...you're missing on a great opportunity if yu refuse to seize this one!

He stood up n left ... With yinka thanking him all day for his support! ...the next month my dad was appointed the new Director ... His boss now told ao his former boss influenced him to pick yinka over him n he was surprised dat my dad stood for yinka d next day ...he said THE MANAGEMENT DOES NOT NEED A YOUTH ...IT NEEDS SOMEONE WHO STANDS FOR THE YOUTHS ...my dad was just saying .. ehn ehn! ..pretending he knew nothing!

My dad played the mind game on them n defeated his former boss ... Got respect of his new boss n became a godfather of yinka & ors hu heard wat he did for yinka! .... He wasn't a saint but he killed three birds with a spoon n he got as much followers without slaying on Instagram!

This is the transcript of the speech I delivered at the 2017 Chemical Engineering Spring Banquet in Fayetteville, AR on May 4, 2017. The audience of about 150 people comprised of Professors, graduating Chemical Engineering students (Bachelors, Masters and PhD) and their friends and families.


I flew in last night and it brought back memories of the first time I flew into XNA. I was expecting 8-lane highways, high-rise buildings, high-speed trains…just like in the American movies I saw back in Nigeria. Instead, I came out of this airport, and all I saw were… cows. I felt like I bought the wrong ticket.

I remember seeing so many trees without leaves. The driver told me that’s why it’s called the Dead of Winter. “Don’t worry, it will get better.” Of course, it got worse. We had an ice storm!

I lived in Lagos, a city of 20 million. I’m used to seeing people everywhere. I remember my first day of class, I stepped out of my apartment and saw nobody. I didn’t think anything of it. I got on the street and still nobody! How can there be so much space with not even a single soul in sight?

But my most vivid memory was standing in front of Old Main and thinking to myself “I made it! I made it!!” Why was I so giddy? It’s because I almost did not make it. I almost allowed fear to kill my dream of coming to the United States, of getting a PhD, of pushing myself to the limit.

You see, I finished my Bachelors in Chemical Engineering with First-Class Honors, I won some competitive awards along the way and had an impressive resume. With my profile, I could get any job I wanted in Nigeria, move into a nice neighborhood and just enjoy life. Not bad for a boy that was raised on less than 50 cents a day. The problem was that I wanted more. I wanted to experience places I only read about in books. I wanted the highest academic degree I could get. I wanted to study here, and broaden my knowledge, challenge my perspectives, engage with the world…I wanted more.

The only thing that stood in my way was fear, the fear of everybody around me. Those closest to me didn’t understand why I would want to leave a guaranteed good life for an uncertain future. Arkansas?! Where is that? Do you know anyone there? Nope. Have you ever been there? Nope. Why not consider a bigger, more diverse city? I kinda like the program they got going at Fayetteville. These are just a sample of the questions I had to field from those genuinely concerned for me.

This back and forth was still going on, when, on the morning of April 16, 2007, a senior at Virginia Tech opened fire, killing 32 people and wounding 17 others. It was the deadliest shooting ever on an American campus. I remember the details of the massacre because almost everyone forwarded me the news. I now had a clear choice to make: allow the actions of a deranged young man to derail my dreams or move forward in spite of the fear? I am here tonight because I chose my dream over fear.

Attending this school ranks as one of my best decisions. I made friends here [that] I’ll keep for life. Some of them are in this room. This is where I fulfilled a long-cherished dream of becoming a Doctor of Engineering. And, let’s face it, what’s better than being a Razorback!

Look, your dreams will always exist side by side with your fears. Both of them are a product of your rich imagination. And you have the power to make one or the other a reality. To have life, to have liberty, to have happiness, you need to feed your dreams and starve your fears. What will prevent you from living the life you want is not lack of money, or lack of time or lack of talent. What will prevent you from living the life you want is a lack of belief in your dreams. You have to believe your dreams to make them real.

People ask me how I survived poverty. How can a poor boy with no money and no connections in an impoverished society make it? The answer is surprisingly simple. I dream. I DREAM. The life I lead today is the product of my dream yesterday. I am dreaming right now of the life I want to lead tomorrow and I will not let fear dictate what I can or cannot become.

The most pernicious fears are not those of others but those that come from within, those that nag at you at every turn, seeking to paralyze you into inaction. As I was completing my program here, I was suddenly faced with the realization that I had spent my entire life in school, from Pre-K to PhD. [But seriously] I had been told about how real life is different from school; and how the school system does a horrible job of preparing students for success. Somehow, I took these well-meaning but misguided opinions as self-evident truths. On one hand, I was happy to be finishing my PhD; on the other, I was afraid, afraid that, perhaps, my best years were behind me.

But I have always dreamt of going into the oil and gas industry. Nigeria has plenty of oil and gas so it was a childhood dream. Here again, my dreams came face to face with my fears. I could go into the industry and fall flat on my face or I could stay in the familiar academic world. I have many brilliant friends who finished a PhD, went on to do a post-doc and took up a position with a university. It’s a great career. It’s just not my dream. If I followed their footsteps, it would be out of fear. And you can never have a great career based on fear.

It turns out my fears were unfounded. Work is very much like school. At school, you do your homework and receive a grade. Same thing in the office. In school, you take many classes at once; at work, you will have several projects simultaneously. More important, when you pass an exam, you are promoted, then given a more difficult exam. It will be the same at work. It’s actually better at work because each promotion comes with…privileges. I might have stayed in school forever if I get a big bonus for passing exams! So do not cast away your confidence which has a great recompense of reward. Don’t let anyone scare you that you are now entering the real world as if the last four years weren’t real. Real world is surviving homework after homework while still having time for friends, family and Bikes Blues and Barbeque.

I have a career, today, that only existed in my imagination just a few years ago because I fed my dreams and starved my fears. Is it possible that I could have gone into Corporate America and failed? Absolutely. But I have made a lifelong commitment to acknowledge my fear without catering to it. I have made it second nature to nurture my dreams because that is the only way to turn them into reality.

Friends, you are moving into the next chapter of your life. And I would be surprised if on some level, you are not afraid. The unknown can be scary. Fear during a transition is natural, even expected. But don’t let fear factor into your decisions. Move as if you cannot fail. The odds may be stacked against you but you can beat the odds. People beat the odds every day, why not you? Let your dreams be the driver, taking you to places you have only been in your head. People ask me if I consider myself fortunate. Yes. I have been fortunate to be bold. Fortune favors the bold.

When you have kids, you watch kid movies. Last week, we saw one from Disney called Zootopia. I can’t tell you what the story was about but a few lines from the sound track stuck with me. At various points during the movie I heard the words “Try Everything; I’ll keep on making those new mistakes; I’ll keep on making them every day.” Disney just distilled my entire message about dreaming more and fearing less into three sentences. So to the class of 2017, I say: Try Everything; Make New Mistakes; Make Them Every Day. Thank you.

In an ideal world, you’d probably arrive to every interview five to 10 minutes early. This amount of time sends the signal that you are serious about landing this job, but also don’t wish to inconvenience the hiring manager.

But sometimes life happens and even though you did everything you could to get to the office on time, you hit traffic and that cushion time turns into a 25-minute delay. And before you know it, you’re Googling, “How to make up for running late to an interview?” while you’re sitting in gridlock.

As frustrating as this is, most hiring managers understand that sometimes, things just happen. But as empathetic as they can be, they also don’t like being left in the dark. So, the next time you’re running behind, give the template below a try.

Oh, and if you’re worried about it working, know that it’s inspired by one of the best messages I received from a candidate who was going to be late for an interview.

1.Template for People Who Have a Good Reason for Running Late

Hi [Name of Interviewer],

I’m so looking forward to our interview today, but wanted to let you know that [your reason for being late]. In spite of this, I anticipate arriving at [a time based on your best guess for how many minutes behind you’re running].

I apologize for the inconvenience and completely understand if this new time does not work with your schedule today. If that’s the case, would you be open to rescheduling? I’m available [provide two or three times and dates] if that would be more convenient for you.

Thanks so much,
[Your Name]

2.Template for People Who Just Overslept

This sounds great, right? Well, what if your reason for being late isn’t any good? What if it’s because you overslept, or you drove in the wrong direction for 20 minutes, or the Danfo driver chose that day to forget to buy fuel or just maybe LASTMA decided to put up a show?

If that’s the case, you’ll want to be careful just how much you share. And in fact, I’d err on the side of saying less so you don’t paint yourself in the wrong light.

Here’s a revised template for those times when it’s your fault:

Hi [Name of Interviewer],

I apologize for the inconvenience, but I’m running late to the interview today. I shouldn’t be longer than [how many minutes you’re actually late] behind.

While I’m still very excited to discuss the opportunity, I completely understand if this new time doesn’t work with your schedule today. If that’s the case, would you be open to rescheduling? I’m available [provide two or three times and dates] if that work better for you.

Sorry again,
[Your Name]

3.Template for People Who Didn’t Say Anything in Advance

OK, now what if you were late for no-good reason and didn’t have time (or even think) to send this note before you met. No fear—you can still make up for your tardiness in your thank you email—assuming of course, that you apologized upon arrival.

Try this out:

Hi [Name of Interviewer],

Thank you so much for taking the time to meet with me today. I wanted to apologize again for being late, it’s completely unlike me and I truly appreciate you still taking the time to meet with me.

I know this must’ve been an inconvenience to you, but I’m even more excited about what I learned about the company and the role today.

[Insert specifics about your conversation and reiterate why you’re both excited and qualified for this role.]

Thanks again!
[Your Name]

There’s no silver bullet message to send when you’re running late to an interview—but regardless of the reason, giving the hiring manager a heads up will never hurt. It not only says that you’re aware that this isn’t OK, but also that you appreciate the hiring manager adjusting their schedule to meet with you.

You need to understand that the post title you choose for your copy is just like a newspaper headline. It either grabs attention or it doesn’t, and I’m sure you want your headline to attract as many people as possible.
1. Focus on solving a problem, not selling something.
The first thing to do while creating an eye-catching headline is to focus on helping.
If you check out most of the articles ranking high in Google, you will find that their focus is mainly about helping people solve a particular problem.
Remember this:
Your headline will always perform better if it is helpful.

2. Come up with many ideas.
There is nothing more important than the your headline, they attribute to the success of your blog post.
You have to select a headline that seems more promising compelling, and attention-grabbing.
When you write a blog post, write lots of headlines before choosing a winner.
You can use a headline analyzer to help you out.
The more you do this, the better and more professional you’ll become at crafting great headlines.

3. Keep a swipe file.
A swipe file is a collection of different headlines that have already proven to work for others. This helps you get inspiration when you need to come up with a great title.
A good example of this is the Jon Morrows Headline Hacks eBook. With this book alone, I’ve been able to write consistently better headlines over time.
You can always use your swipe file as a source of inspiration to write good headlines whenever you’re lost or stuck.
According to Brian Clack, swipe files can’t even really be considered cheating. It’s just the way it’s done if you want to write effective copy, especially when starting out.
Only once a copywriter has a true understanding of what works can they take a completely original approach. Even then, it’s pretty rare to come up with a gangbuster headline that is 100% unique.
Using these templates can ultimately increase the effectiveness of your blog post titles, and hence, the ultimate read rate of your blog posts.
Start gathering good headlines from across the web.
Start to pay attention to the things you click on and WHY you’re clicking.
Figure out what works and then copy the model.

4. Use numbers (preferably odd numbers).
Several pieces of research have proved that using numbers in your headlines tend to get 73% more social shares and engagements.
What’s more is that addingspecific numbers (like data) to your headlines is a good way to make the title more exciting to your readers.
One of the major reasons why using numbers in headlines works is because numbers are like “brain candy”. This is to say that the brain is very receptive to numbers.
I also want you to know that there’s a science behind odd numbers. Odd numbers tend to perform better, and that’s why you often see blogs using odd numbers in their headlines.
Research carried out by Content Marketing Institute discovered that the brain seems to believe odd numbers more than even numbers. It was also discovered that odd numbers help people digest and recall information more easily.
When they tweaked one of their headlines to include the odd number “7”, the click through rate increased by 20%.
5. Include positive words.
Using positive superlatives in your headline will help make it more emotional. This will, in turn, make it more enticing and attention-grabbing.
Some positive superlatives that will enhance your headline writing include:

Funniest
Best
Biggest
Always
Fastest
Easiest
Most
Greatest
Largest
Hottest
Strongest

6. Use negative words to highlight fear.
Fear is a strong emotion which can make anyone take action on a given task.
A study carried out by Outbrain found that headlines featuring negative superlatives performed 30% better than those with positive superlatives.
Some of the negative superlatives you can use include:
Never
Worst
By No Means
Nothing
No One
No Way
None
Also, using words like Stop, Avoid, and Don’t in your headline is a good idea, too.
Examples:
“ Stop Making These Silly Blogging Mistakes“
“The 5 Worst Excuses For Not Living Your Dream Life”

7. Make use of brainstorming tools.
The availability of tools on the internet has made most tasks easier and less time-consuming.
There are tools out there that you can use to help come up with great headlines. If you have tried all the other methods mentioned here but still can’t get a thought-provoking headline, then try using some tools to help.

We are not starting mass mailing now. First try to trap their emails in your inbox. Treat they individually and specially. Send them solutions and remember to put ur company links (affiliate links) at the end of such advices (you will be getting your own commission as soon as they are buying it). Then when you have gathered enough emails with time (building your reputation among them). You can later sources for another product to promote. Just download their emails from your box and send a mass emails to them telling them to check this new products out (your new campaign).


And always remember you are treating them as humans not robots that you will just send links to and expect them to buy like that. And always try to use your initiatives, I can only stand you up and can't push you to run

Chai! Some people are just too anxious to make money. @ baba11, please don't be a bad student try to read biko! I said trap them from your Facebook to your mail box by offering free advice and asking them to contact you in case they need more of it. Whenewver they contact you, give them a good advice again (Google and good PLR articles can always supply you with answers to problems). And below your advice ask them to check out your company products (your affiliate link) that it will perfectly treat/cure/provide solutions to their problems and always remember to instruct them to get back to you after checking out the products.

Facebook will not allow you to market some of your affiliate links on your page and those that they allow they will always make sure it doesnt see enough exposure thereby forcing your arm to buy their paid adverts.
