The part that irritates me most is funds for research, of all the researches made in the past, how many of them have those universities themselves made use of? Abi what's the essence of researches made and ending up in the school libraries? I know of someone who had his ND from Federal College of Agrculture Akure, from there, he won scholarship to a University in Costa Rica, where he got his Bachelor's degree. His final year project was amazing that it was funded and being put to use in the field of tree crops (a citrus-harvesting device), from there, another university from US wooed him to come over for his master's degree, he's in the US now. If it's here, such project will not see the light of the day or probably end up in the school library.

Exactly! I have friends and school mates who are now professors and PhD holders in various countries in different fields. I can relate to this.
The difference? The results from their researches work were actually put to use by the institutions were the schooled. One if them even has patents to his name now and works for the biggest chip manufacturing corporation in the world (InTels).
Over here, (some) students with passion and vision, spend time and money to produce their final year projects only to get a nod during project defense and then have such projects dumped in waste bins afterwards.
Who is responsible for that? The president?

There is no special fund anywhere.

Are you absolutely sure about this?
Are you aware of the numerous agencies existing in this country whose sole responsibilities are in various sectors of agrarian research and development in conjunction with higher institutions specialized in their respective fields?
Have they ever complained of being under funded?
Let's apportion blames, but responsibly.
By the way, who is the government? Buhari and his cabinet alone? No na.
If there's one thing the past administration and the current one have done consistently, it it is increased funding for agricultural development in the country.
Here you have one president asking more from his government (agric universities are part of that government too).
Have you heard of Farro 61 (rice species) and how it was developed in A.B.U Zaria? Read up on how much it took to develop it, where the funds came from, how potent and how greatly profitable it is to the average rice farmer. Then also read up on why it's availability is limited to the cartel that developed it and why they were reluctant in making the seeds available to the general public.
Compare the funds used in producing such a revolutionary species of rice against the hundreds of billions churned out year -in, year -out to these institutions and then you might see that it isn't ONLY a council of less than 60 men seating in a room near some rock in the nation's capital that squarely have the blame.
N.B: I'm stating these in the assumption that this engagement is to highlight ways to make progress and not just a nairaland aimless back and forth.
Have a good morning.

Let the government play their role first before passing the blame to universities. Universities are underfunded and yet, you expect so much from them.

The government pays so much priority on infrastructure and building a new presidential hospital, not to mention all other sick and wicked budget in ministries but the University which should be the institution that will bring about the needed change and development the country wants in underfunded. Do you care to know the percentage alloted to education in the budget? This same education budget isn't just for the Universities alone too.

Please, do you expect so much from the seed you failed to water and position in a fertile soil and under sunlight?

Let's start telling ourselves the truth than ALWAYS going blind to the root cause of the problems we face.

Nobody is absolving the government of blame. However, if you look critically at how much individuals saddled with lesser responsibilities willfully abdicate same in virtually all fields in this country, even if you resurrect one of the saints to come and rule (lead) this country, there won't be much of an improvement.
That's what I'm pointing out because Universities of Agriculture are also government institutions. They receive special funding for Research and Development from multiple agencies and MDA's every year with little to show for it.

Amazing. This government has passed on the responsibilities of food abundance locally to Universities of Agriculture. Very soon, the blame will be shifted to them as being responsible for high cost of food in the country.

It's about time everyone started living up their responsibilities in this country abeg. How many more decades will we blame ONLY the president who's in power?

Absolute waste of resources. I still don't understand why the Nigerian armed forces should have even ONE personnel stationed in the South Eastern region where they are not needed, only to have a handful of these soldiers stationed in Southern Kaduna and other areas where they are desperately needed.
